What in the hell happened, Yelp!? I rely on your reviews and this is what you give me!? Where to begin? Good or Bad?...Let's start with the bad and finish with the good. Cons: - Price - what in the hell did we just pay for? For sure not the location! For sure not the portion sizes! Where was the flavor? What were were served?... - Portion Sizes: 3 tiny carrots? Maybe 1/4 cup of risotto. And my Prime Rib - Where was the meat?! Not to mention... - Flavor: The flavor of the prime rib was not really great. Everything was bone! I couldn't even take photos of the meals because it was so disappointing. The salmon...strong fishy flavor. Not fresh. Which might not be fair because I am spoiled by seafood after living in Maine for 3 years...But again with the 3 tiny carrots and less than 1/4 cup of risotto... The items are WAAAAAAAAAAY overpriced for the portion sizes, taste, texture, and location. I cannot justify the amount we paid for the meal we had. I honestly would not care about the portions if the food tasted like it was sent from the heavens. But it wasn't. I really am getting tired of reading 5 star reviews about alcoholic beverages. I AM HERE TO EAT! 5 stars shouldn't be given to drinks only unless this place is a bar/cafe/lounge. This is a restaurant! I.am.here.for.the.food. Pros: - Service was friendly as it should be. Just treat me nice, be respectful...and that's pretty much it. I don't need someone constantly coming to my table. I don't think I ask for a lot. I just want my food. Was the service above and beyond? No. It was good service just like you get anywhere else. - The only meal that we had that was good was the Ahi Tuna Appetizer. That was it. I wasn't even a fan of them frying the poor avocado. Poor thing. Mistreated. Yet, everything on that specific dish tasted very good. The fish, the sauce, the avocado (despite being fried). So I guess if I come back I'm gonna skip on the food and just order alcoholic beverages? The happy hour deals seem okay and I guess that's what most people do here anyway? Great dinner spot! I traveled to chambersburg for business and always look for non chain restaurants to eat. This place was fabulous. The french onion soup with beef tenderloin was sooo good and savory, came out piping hot. My husband got the risotto and i got the duck fat seared scallops. The portions were very generous and each dish was seasoned perfectly (not too bland or overly salted). I definitely will try new items if im here for business again. The only reason i took off a star was because the ceiling fan made the light flicker and made it very uncomfortable to read the menu. I felt like i was at a rave. read more

This place is absolutely amazing, hands down the best martinis in the Tri-state area. Definitely recommend the cheese board as an appetizer! We were there for lunch today; we are locals....not out-of-towners! Overall, OK! The wine pour was about 4 oz. for $10.00. The Fish & Chips were dry and over cooked. The Fries were end of lunch time....many small pieces and bits. Now the good news.... The Shrimp appetizer was FABULOUS - huge shrimp with crispy coating with a wonderful chile sauce. The Pork Belly Reuben was a TREAT as well as The Crab Cake Melt - YUMMY! The was our second visit since moving back to Pennsylvania.....will come back again for another try! read more

This was our first time dining at Bistro 71. It was easy to get a table on a Saturday night. Which I was very impressed with. The atmosphere was great super cute inside with exposed brick walls absolutely loved it. Wine menu was nice they have half-price wine bottles on Wednesday we will definitely be checking that out. Our server was fantastic she was very friendly and attentive. Although she was a great server the service and wait for our food was very slow. We had the shrimp as an appetizer which were delicious very similar to bang bang shrimp from bonefish Grill. I had the dinner special which was a stuffed prawn. It was a decent entrée but if it was on the regular menu I wouldn't be ordering it again. My boyfriend had for ahi which was tasty. Larz and Barbara who own/run the place are so nice. So welcoming and friendly and they've done a such a superb job of this place. Ok... here we go... Food. The BEST. BEST! And I'm a Brit who gets to go to Gordon Ramsey and Jamie Oliver restaurants back in London... 1. Crab cakes - phenomenal. Like no other. Meaty, next to no breadcrumbs. Taste incredible. I get them every time. 2. Lamb lollipops - equally great. Tender, fall off the bone and presented in a zesty, tangy glaze. I could eat them all day!! 3. Rack of lamb. Bistro 71 is outstanding! Great atmosphere, great service and outstanding food. The lamb lollipops are cooked perfectly and are a must have. We also got the French onion soup- it was incredibly flavorful! I ordered the pork chop with root beer gastric, the pork chop was cooked perfectly and the gastric was excellent. My fiancé had the lamb shank, it was flavorful and so tender it fell off the bone. The other family members with us got the New York strip, scallops and the bistro salad. All the food was delicious and cooked perfectly. I would recommend a reservation, while this was ice fest weekend, they always seem to have a great crowd. Also the food is well worth the price, each meal is anywhere from $20-30, and appetizers range from $8-15. read more

My husband and I visited this restaurant recently. It will be the last time. The restaurant is pretentious and the wait staff aloof. I ordered lobster risotto. It came in a large bowl with very little content and a few small chunks of lobster. The price was $42. Friends had joined us and one of them also ordered the lobster risotto. It was also very spicy and that was not mentioned in the description. My husband had duck wrapped in bacon. The duck was extremely tough. That is most likely why it was wrapped in bacon. He also ordered the ahi tuna which was served without wasabi. Our other friend ordered the $38 dollar crab cakes. They were two very small crab cakes and several spears of asparagus with a very small serving of risotto in the middle of the plate. Our bill for 4 people and 3 drink was $205.00. I don't mind paying for great service and really good food. This restaurant offered neither. Very disappointing. read more

You cannot come to Bistro 71 and not try their lamb lollipops (in their list of appetizers). They are SO delicious & tender and the flavor is really top notch with the addition of he raspberry glaze. I accompanied my order with a grilled chicken caesar salad, which was just okay, but the lamb really pulled the slack for this instead. Service is great- the waitstaff makes great wine recommendations based on your order as well. Nice addition to the Chambersburg area, will definitely try additional items from their menu. read more

Happy Hour appetIzers 20% off - 3-5 daily. Great deal. We tried the house shrimp and the cheese board. Both were delicious and had us wanting to lick the plates clean , but we refrained. The sauce on the shrimp - I want a gallon of it - rich and tangy - perfect. And the bacon jam with the warm Brie? Heaven. You know what? It was my fault that I didn't love Bistro 71. (I think.) The lady and I stumbled in after a lovely dinner elsewhere. We were already tispy and giggly. We just wanted dessert (and more drinks) before we walked back to Wilson's campus. So we plopped down at the bar, ordered sweet things, and made quiet conversation. We ignored the other patrons, and they ignored us. We ignored the bar staff, and they ignored us. All is right with the world. Then the owner-lady sidled up. I made a really stupid mistake and admitted that I went to Wilson, which started her on a major sales pitch: "Oh, we want to be a town-and-gown dining stop! You should bring friends, pass out these flyers, get us publicity, tell your professors...!" On and on and on! Drinks come. She keeps pitching. Dessert comes. She keeps pitching. This crazy woman has inserted herself between me and my sweetie in the middle of an otherwise very nice date and will not SHUT UP! I get it. I should bring business to your restaurant because you have no clue how to get the Wilson crowd through your doors. But really, should that be my problem, as a customer? No, I don't think so. Months later, I don't remember what I ate or drank because I was too busy trying to end a sales pitch for a restaurant I was already eating in. Maybe the owner-lady is less pushy now. I was lucky enough to come across this gem of a place on my way home from visiting my Mom. Met some other family there. I called to make a reservation while they were closed and left a message. The manager called me back as soon as he come in to confirm. Our table was ready and even though we all arrived a few minutes apart they sat us as we arrived. I was excited to try their innovative menu as I myself am a chef. The available menu was quite different then what was shown on their website but was full of great choices. I was disappointed that the bacon wrapped duck appetizer had been 86d but tried the sweet chili shrimp which was delish. The Caesar salad was fresh and not drowning in dressing. The colossal crab cake was just that. About the size of my hand and full of lump crab. 3 of us at the table enjoyed the crab. Two others had the filet mignon which was cooked perfectly and quite tasty. The final meal was the duck breast that my Godson had and judging by the fact that he all but licked the plate, I would say it was delicious as well. Our server was attentive and efficient. Overall I can say my only disappointment is that I live in Boston and will not be able to revisit this great place. Do yourself a favor and give them a try help support the great independent restaurants they are struggling as covid has affected their livelihood! read more

I went back last week with my daughter, and the "tapas style" ordering was no longer on the menu, nor were the bacon wrapped figs. Their menu is seasonal, and like all things, it must change. The food, however, was as equally delicious. The hamburger may very well have been the best I've ever had, and my daughter's salmon was prepared expertly. I can't say enough good things about this place, and I'll definitely be back, even without having business in the area. I'll do the 90 minute drive; it's that enjoyable. read more

Came here because they had roast rack of lamb on the menu. Unfortunately, they've since changed the menu... They did have lamb lollipops (which I ordered); also had the duck (which was a special that night). Both were good: the lamb was in a chipotle glaze, sweet and just spicy enough. The duck was good as well, though the lamb was a hard act to follow... Price-wise...that's a tough judgment. My dinner came to $38, plus tax and tip. That included the appetizer, entree, salad, starch, and vegetable (which, at most places of this caliber, you'd pay for each item separately). So on that basis alone, it was a good deal. Add to this the fact that serving sizes are generous (the appetizer was four lamb chops for $10...throw in a salad and it would be a meal), and this place is definitely worth stopping by. read more

I don't take reviews lightly, nor do I give five stars often. However, Bistro 71 was a home run. The food was INCREDIBLE and the service was just as good. Our server was attentive and made great recommendations. I had the chef's special for the day, miso glazed short ribs and my wife had the chicken provolone. Both entrees were incredible. Bistro is an easy 5... Not only an awesome answer to Chambersburg's excessive amount of chains, but the food is absolutely amazing. Larry and Barb are the owners and wonderful hosts. They walk the walk when it comes to doing their party to revitalizing Chambersburg's downtown and have one gem of a dining spot. The menu is small but everything on it is great and the chef does a good job mixing it up with specials. I found this place while on business visiting Chambersburg. I travel alone, therefore finding friendly bartenders is key to keeping my mood up during the week. These guys welcomed me like an old friend, and the laughing started immediately. It is such a warm relief to be treated like you belong. The wine was great; food was really good. I'm coming from Baltimore City - always good to find foodie food while 'out in the country.' This will be my go-to for wine dinners while in C-burg. read more

Thank goodness for Yelp or we may never have stumbled onto this place! Had a great experience with their pri fixe menu for Valentine's Day and all of the courses were great! I had the shrimp appetizer, the spinach salad, the sea bass entree and the strawberry cups and honestly I loved it all! The ambience is pretty and although the seating arrangements are somewhat tight, our new friends who sat next to us could not have been more delightful. The owner is very attentive and truly glad you have visited his restaurant :) The ONLY recommendation I would make is to have a wine list to choose from so I could have reviewed my choices. In a town with LOTS of chain restaurants, and independent restaurants who serve overcooked, undercooked, cold, or just plain BAD food, where most of the servers are too busy to bring you just a glass of water, or pay attention to your needs, this is a must!
