I'm not able to communicate during regular office hours, what kind of business doesn't have a voicemail? I emailed the owner Lynn to tell her that when I tried calling it said that the call cannot be completed as dialed because the party was busy. she explained to me that is because she didn't have a voicemail on purpose. She called me one time while I was working and every time I tried to call her back there was no voicemail so I couldn't respond. I responded via email with a picture that she said she received. Bittersweet indeed! When we first walked in, we were not greeted because they were occupied with their gadgets. So we took the initiative to greet them first to break that awkward silence in this small spaced bakery only to get a quick "hello" from the gentleman behind the counter. Cold but whatever, we came here for the goodies which looked amazing! Mini Cannoli (2/$3.50)- I kid you not, this cannoli tasted like it came straight from the North End! So good! Raspberry Flakey Puff- Super light and airy. House Bar- Coconutty, white-chocolatey, chewy goodness. Overall Service: When we asked them what was the difference between the Magic Bar and the House Bar, the lady gave us an oddly vague answer "One have oatmeal, one have white chocolate. One have pecans, one have caramel." What?! Which one has what? If you're going to be short with people, then at least be concise by listing the ingredients properly, like "the Magic bar has ____" and "the House Bar has ____" . Oh boy folks, oh boy. They seem to be very well at the new location in Hudson/Litchfield location off RT 102. The selections are outstanding. I just wish I could of had a half of Pie of each flavor I desired. I do not like to waste nor does my waist line like it. But half of one and half of another still equals more than I should eat. I think they are the best bakery around and they will succeed from their location and great pastries. How can a confection commissure not enjoy a great bakery north of Boston? The flavors are there. My complaint/disappointment is the bakery is not open in Tyngsboro. When I spoke the person who answered my call she explained the moved to Litchfield NH last December. I pulled into their parking lot and found the door locked. There's a very faded sign in the winter explaining they are closed until renovations are complete. I asked why the sign was still up. There's a sign hanging on hooks on the roadside by the entrance with the bakery's name and logo. She just said they were left because they are moving back, eventually. From what I saw looking in the window, renovations are not in process. Their website still gives the closed address. Very confusing. A bit of a different review for me... Perhaps it was the cold weather and quaint country-like charm that led me to purchase more than just the usual cuppy at the tiny locale directly across from the Old Town Hall. I'll start with the cookies: They all looked thick and lovely, so I picked a peanut butter and an oatmeal raisin. The flavors were there, which is great. Unfortunately they were both crispy and dry. Not sure if this has to do with an open end display and air circulating or not...just a guess. I know not everyone does, but I prefer soft, chewy cookies. As for the GIANT cuppy: Perhaps it should be a "cuppin", as I believe the batter goes into a huge muffin tin! This isn't just any old dessert, it's like a MEAL! Breaking it down, $4.50 will get you a 75/25 cupcake to frosting ratio. My vanilla/vanilla actually was whipped up on the fly as the only one left in the display had chocolate frosting, which I never do on a first try. Bonus points to Lynn for making that happen. I was very excited to try my giantess much later in the evening, especially after discovering that the frosting had developed that ever so slight "crust". How else to describe when frosting sets like that...it gives a wonderful mouth feel when those crystals kinda "break down" and dissolve into creamy tasty vanilla on the tongue. A job well done. If your coming or going from the Pheasant Lane Mall you need to stop here. You walk in and can almost picture yourself back in time, you expect to see an old brass cash register where the numbers pop up in the window. It is a tiny shop but somehow has everything you could want. With the old fashioned decor and wooden floors with the smells wafting from the back, you don't really want to leave. There are savory items here like chicken salad but i have yet to try them. Gingerbread men and cookies (the crinkle ones are my favorite) sugar cookies bars cupcakes cakes pies turnovers and so much more My girls always get a sarsaparilla soda as a treat to go with their sweet. I ordered 35 gingerbread men as a favor for my sisters Baby Shower. They came out beautiful, on time and the frosting on it was heavenly. Most of the guests ate the cookie before leaving the shower. So delicious!!! Lynne is the owner of this hidden gem and she is so talented! She makes an excellent chicken noodle soup with wide noodles and a variety of seasoning. It's perfect for a rainy day. She also serves a broccoli torte made with layers of phyllo. It's so light and flavorful. The cakes she makes are the most creative colorful creations which reflect Lynne's amazing imagination. If you think of it then she will make it happen. The entrance to the bakery is so cute and inviting as well. Lynne donated a breathtaking and wonderfully delicious cake for a local charity fundraiser and it was impressive to see her dedication to the community. We went blueberry picking at Parlee Farms today, and we needed to get some lunch on the way back. We were planning on driving to downtown Lowell to get burritos, but when we took the corner, I remembered that the Bittersweet Bake Shoppe was up the hill and I had been meaning to go there! I didn't know if they had any lunch options, so we strolled up there to check out the wares. We walked into to a very well-air-conditioned tiny space. To our delight, there were some lunch options, including a couple vegetarian choices. The mister and I each got a slice of spinach pie, a side of potato salad, and an iced tea. The woman working offered to heat up the spinach pie, which was a nice surprise. We sat down at a little table to enjoy our lunch. The spinach pie was delicious - flaky and light, with a lovely spinach and cheese filling. The potato salad was freezing cold, but otherwise delicious. And the iced tea was so good, and I'm a certified snob when it comes to iced tea. It was among the best iced tea I've had. We obviously couldn't go to a place called the Bittersweet Bake Shoppe without getting something sweet to finish off our meal. We asked if they had a "signature" dessert, and they said the two that they considered "wow-ers" were the strawberry cupcake and the chocolate ganache raspberry crown. We chose the crown. And what a great decision that was. The chocolate cake was moist and awesome, and it was filled with fabulous raspberries, then topped with a bit of chocolate ganache and buttercream frosting. Yum yum and yum. I've bought this and that here, I'll have a giant cookie, a slice of that, and throw in two of those things. All good. They did my daughter's wedding cake. I asked for something fairly simple, three layers, three different cakes and fillings, (carrot cake, chocolate cake with mousse filling, and golden cake with raspberry filling) white frosting (they advised against buttercream because we had an outdoor reception in August and that tends to melt in the heat) and generally they had some good suggestions. They even offered to lend an antique cake stand! It was all quite delicious, reasonably priced (we live close by and were able to transport it ourselves) and just lovely. We recently moved to Tyngsboro, and have been trying to visit some local businesses while we get the lay of the land. A few weeks ago, we drove by the Bittersweet Bake Shoppe, and made a mental note to try it out. I will never forgive myself for the days between when we saw it and when we finally stopped in, because this place is awesome! Now, I should start off by saying that my biggest food weakness is baked goods, which is a well-known fact that my colleagues use to tease me in the office - I just can't say no to a delicious pastry or bread. So, the first thing I noticed when I walked into the shop(pe) is that it's quite small, and you're literally surrounded by baked products, and they all look really good. There seemed to be some organization with cupcakes off to the side and pastries and breads in front. There also seems to be some non-baked products, like some gourmet spreads and jellies. Also, there was a sign for lunch specials, which we didn't try, but will soon. It as a bit of a struggle to figure out what to order for a treat, but I ended up with a chocolate apple pecan pastry, and because I have a very soft spot for cannoli, I picked up one of those, too. The cannoli was good - I'm usually not a huge fan of cannoli shell, since it tends to be pretty dry - I often try to get a cannoli with an alternative shell, like a florentine cookie or something similar - but this shell was quite good. I tend to judge all cannoli against the ones that I get at Mike's Pastry in Boston. The filling was pretty smooth, lacking some of the ricotta grittiness that Mike's has. The flavor was quite good, and I plan to have more. The one I had had one part dipped in chocolate which was a nice touch. The chocolate pastry though was beyond compare. While it was called a chocolate apple pecan pastry, I'm not sure I tasted any apple, but it didn't matter. There was a great filling which was like chocolate marzipan and has to be some of the best pastry filling I've had. The pastry itself was baked well, having a nice buttery flavor and a light flaky texture. The frosting on top was sweet, but not sugary, and had a great flavor. You could tell this was baked by someone who was very proud of their craft. I also stole a bite of my wife's banana brownie, which was awesome - the banana flavor was prominent, but not overpowering. A total score, and I was skeptical of it upon looking initially, since it looked so busy, with marshmallows on top. The woman who was there - who I assume was the owner - was very friendly, and knew her product inside and out, and was eager to talk about them, which was a refreshing change from the mega-chain bakery that is Panera. My only negative comment is that their website isn't very helpful (or well designed.) Because it seems like their inventory changes frequently, it would be great if they were able to list daily or weekly specials, so if something incredible is coming up, you know to head in. If this bakery were in Boston, I'd give it four stars, but because it's so close I'm giving it an extra star for convenience. All in all, I'm glad we found this gem so close to home. It's going to be a frequent stop for us - hopefully my wife can stop me from heading back too often, for my waist and my wallet's sake. read more

How have I not known about his place? Stopped in here recently with my mom and sister on our way home from a shopping trip. We have driven past before and never thought to go in. Thankfully this time was different. The selection was great. Cupcakes, cookies, bars, cake slices, and other baked goods. We all picked 2-3 treats each & headed home. I went with the Nutella croissant, pecan square and a lemon filled cookie. My sister got a peanut butter cookie and some mini ginger snaps. My mom went with a raspberry cookie and we decided to take a peanut butter s'mores cookie home for our dad. Amazing. Everything was delicious. I can not wait to go back again and try some more. I will start by saying that in order for a bakery to be 5-star caliber for me, it has to be comparable in quality to a North End bakery. If I could give 4.5 stars, I would have but that isn't an option unfortunately... so I rounded up. North End it is not, but Bittersweet Bake Shoppe is quite good. After getting services next door at Pozitively Young Salon, I popped in to check out the goods since it's the closest REAL bakery to our house (we just moved to the area summer 2010). There were several samples out that I was able to try, and based on the samples that I tried I took home a banana split brownie and my husband chose a chocolate pecan flaky pastry thing. He also took a cannoli because like any good bakery should, Bittersweet makes their filling with ricotta. We'll start with the coffee they serve: It's quite good. I'm not sure what the roast is, but Pozitively Young next door serves their coffee to their clients and so I was able to partake in a cup and a half. For my second half-cup, there was no sugar added and I enjoyed it even without the sugar (just cream). It was a dark roast that wasn't at ALL bitter and had a good flavor. Enjoyable. We did not eat the pastries right away (we bought them at lunchtime and ate them while watching a DVR'ed program later in the evening). Hubby had stored them in the fridge and after we brought them up to room temperature again they tasted fresh. My fear was that the fridge would have dried them out, but thankfully that fear was not realized. The brownie (which I reluctantly shared a bite of) was incredible. I was skeptical of a banana split brownie, but the banana flavor wasn't overpower nor did they try to overcrowd the brownie with strawberry or other flavors found in a real banana split. The brownie itself had slight banana flavor, and it was topped with toasted mini-marshmallows. In between the brownie & the marshmallows was a ganache infused with banana flavor - and that's where you found the bulk of that flavor. Overall though, the brownie did not betray the essential good brownie qualities. It was moist, dense, and above all other flavors - fudgie. I would easily choose another brownie from their case on another visit. Overall, I was pleased with not only the high quality of the baked goods but also with the staff. I was waiting for my husband who was meeting me to choose our yummies, and the owner was working. She was super friendly and talked to me while I was waiting. It was nice to feel welcomed and not like I was taking up space in their small shop not buying anything. I'm watching what I eat so frequent visits won't be happening... but I can say that I can definitely see myself stopping by this super-local shop for a monthly treat. Or maybe more often to check out their soups for a lunch. Or maybe a coffee while I'm out and about. Either way - they're quite good and I highly recommend them. read more

Fabulous 50th Birthday Cake I asked Lynn to make a special cake for my husbands 50th. We decided to theme it based around his other love - his Harley Davidson Motorbike. I sent a picture of the bike and the cake arrived with an excellent edible bike on top of Harley Davidson logo colored icing. The cake itself - a vanilla layer and a chocolate layer joined with raspberry cream frosting was delicious. Everyone, especially my husband, loved it. Bittersweet Bake Shoppe is a treasure! It's well worth the additional 20 minute "detour" whenever we're visiting my parents in Nashua. Lynne is a kind, talented baker who takes time to visit with her patrons. She's incredibly accommodating too; I place my order the day prior and it's always waiting for me. Everything I've tried is outstanding and of the best quality. The ham and Swiss croissant is so delicate and buttery - highly recommended. Her chocolate chip cookies are perfect; crisp edges and chewy middle. While we enjoy everything we've tried, it's Lynne's pies that have us hooked! Her chicken pot pie is packed with chicken, vegetables, and rich flavor. We love her chocolate French silk pie and her key lime pie. The crust is light and flaky. The decadent fillings and vibrant flavors are always balanced with her light, homemade whipped cream. It's the winning combination! read more

My experience was more bitter than sweet maybe I was spoiled, having just moved back from New York and going to great bakeries often. I have worked retail in the past myself, I can never understand why small businesses can't keep it professional in the workplace. Nobody wants to hear gossip and inappropriate conversations while buying something that's a luxury and not a necessity. It should be a treat to go buy goodies. We've always wanted to try this place and were excited when we went to go try it out. Disappointed. Everything looked great when we went in, but both items we purchased were stale and not even tasty on the stale realm. We got the sense the women working was in a rush to close, luckily for us, because it kept our purchases to a minimum. The Butter Scone was dried out and no flavor. They Eclair was one of the worst I'd ever had, dried out with lack-luster custard with no flavor. We want to give this place and other items another try, but it may be a while. read more

I stumbled upon this bakery a few weekends ago and decided to take a peak inside. It was a saturday almost at closing time and the shelves were still well-stocked. Cupcakes looked decent sized and there were a variety of other pastries available. I decided to try a whoopie pie which was slightly smaller than the generous sized cupcakes which cost $3.50 I believe according to the sign in front of them. The whoopie pie had no price noted but I ordered it and was a little shocked that it cost $3.75. You can get a larger one in the grocery store down the street for $1.50 and I'm talking about the ones made at actual bakeries and stocked in the store, not the ones baked at the grocery store. While the whoopie pie was good, I don't believe it was worth the price and I won't be returning for more overpriced baked goods. read more
