Visiting Nashville for my 30th birthday and just decided on a whim to get a tattoo for the memories. I googled "best thin line tattoo parlors in Nashville" and this one came up first. As stated on their website Danelle is the artist doing walk ins so we just stopped in to see if she was available. She happened to be working on someone else but was available in an hour so we left and came back a little later. She was great! So nice and very informative. I have another tattoo so I was familiar with the process but she provided 2 difference sizes as well as some background info about what she thought would look best as it was a thin line tattoo and I wanted to see all the details. I'm super happy with my end result and would totally go back. The shop was also very very clean and the girls at the front desk were super nice as well! They seemed really happy that I mentioned I was from out of town as they usually just get locals but that also did make me feel more confirmed with my choice in knowing they seemed to have lots of reoccurring local customers. Walked in for a small tattoo while on a short trip to Nashville. My friend wanted a small cowboy boot and I decided I'd love one too. Looked up the IG page and found an artist, and was able to walk in on a Tuesday afternoon. Danielle did our tattoos and I love it! The shop is VERY clean, everyone was very personable and the work here is great! The parking is in the back of the building and you have to go through a side door to get upstairs. My best friend and I planned a girls weekend to Nashville and wanted to get a tattoo to remember the trip by. This shop was recommended by a friend and I was so impressed with the booking process, but the experience at the shop was next level. The shop is beautiful , quiet, and clean! Evan Wyatt was out artist and truly hit the nail on the head with the design. He was able to incorporate the mockingbird with my current tattoos and it truly looks like it belongs there. Evan made me feel comfortable and took the time to really understand what I wanted and what my future plans were for this arm to ensure placement. I've been here with my folks at the old location and recently got tattooed by Courtney O'Shea. I love her work and she is very speedy. Prices are on the heafty side but you get what you pay for. Recommend her, and all the artists they employ are great. Atmosphere is a little hectic and no entertainment (like a tv) but that's ok, it's a busy shop because they do good work. I am now a tattoo apprentice, and Courtney was kind enough to help me talk about things and what I can do better. Overall great experience read more

I went to Tennessee for a girls trip. I decided last minute to go ahead and get a tattoo. I emailed them 2 days beforehand and even though they didn't have appointments so last minute they gave great instructions on when and how to get a good walk in time. We started early and it was just an overall easy experience. With this being my first tattoo my artist, Luke, was kind and helpful with positioning and sizing. This helped me sit through it without any issues. I took two images off of the internet and they made it happen. I am absolutely amazed and in love with how it all turned out. I had the pleasure of working with Chris Holbert from Black 13 a little less than a week ago. I couldn't be happier with my experience. From the beginning, Kimberly has been so kind and professional, working with me over an extended period of time after I got scheduled, had to pull out of the waitlist due to pregnancy and then nursing, getting back on a waitlist and ensuring I got hooked up with the perfect artist. She is such a kind and stellar worker and I hope Black 13 knows how much of a treasure she is. When I reached the month of, Doy called me to schedule the appointment. He was super kind and personable. The tattoo community can be a bit intimidating from the outside, but Doy was lovely to speak with while we scheduled my appointment. Night before the appointment; I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. I was walking into an appointment to get a half-sleeve and I wasn't going to see a design until the moment of truth. I understand that this is pretty common nowadays regarding getting a tattoo from a high-demand artist like Chris. I had to just trust the process and remind myself that his portfolio really spoke to me. Moment of truth came, Nichole checked me in (also super warm and welcoming personality). The wait was not long and I met Chris. He showed me his design and it took my breath away. I knew I would be honored to have such a beautiful piece on my arm. I was so amazed he was able to take my emails and pictures and fragmented thoughts and create a beautiful half sleeve that was exactly the expression I have wanted for years. Chris was very friendly and prepped my arm. Everything was clean, professional and sterile. He laid the stencil perfectly on the first try (almost like he has been doing this a long time :-)). During the tattoo, he was kind enough to check in on me to see how I was doing. He offered a few breaks (which I took...because ouch!) and worked very efficiently. Also of note, there is a lot of natural light in the studio with big windows that were nice to look out of during the tattoo. After the tattoo, I was (and am) thrilled with how it looked! Chris answered all of my questions regarding aftercare and made sure I understood how to care for my tattoo. Nichole also texted me instructions in case I forgot anything. He walked me upstairs and I paid. Just as an aside: please tip your artists! Creativity is valuable. I told Doy that Black 13 has attracted some incredible artists. Easily the best in Nashville. While I was being tattooed, I overheard a woman had traveled out of state to be tattooed here (and from reviews, this seems to happen frequently). If you get work done, do it here. If you get waitlisted, be patient...it's well worth the wait. If you don't see the design during the wait, trust your artist...it is a group of amazingly talented people who are familiar with their craft, their instruments, composition, and the way a tattoo sits on the human body. I first contacted Black13 in late summer of 2019 for an appointment for myself and a friend in April of 2020. Something we'd be coming in from several states away for. Then...2020 happened. Our appointment had to be rescheduled four times. For over a year, Danelle kept in touch with me by phone and email. The entire time, her only goal was getting us the experience we wanted. I honestly have never had better customer service from ANY other business. When Danelle was busy, Kimberly swung in to take care of us. We were not returning customers. In fact, this was the first tattoo for both of us. The designs we wanted were not big jobs for the shop; not a lot of money. We wanted Nathan Fisher for his clean line work, though our design would use nowhere NEAR all of his skill. In spite of our basic request, and the year it took to get it done, they were amazing to deal with every step of the way. They treated us like long-time customers - not the newbies we were. Everyone there from Danelle and Kimberly, to Doy the owner, to our artist Nathan was caring and completely selfless - treating us as if what we wanted was their main goal. Nathan was meticulous in his preparation and a complete professional who totally put us at ease. The lines he did on a piece that is ONLY lines (where you'd be able to see any variation in thickness or any little wobble) are consistent and even better than I'd hoped for. The tiniest of thin lines that he was able to add for more detail blew my mind. I'll add a photo once it's all healed up. I can't recommend them highly enough. I'd gladly take the day-long drive again to go to Black13 to have something else done in the future. I have friends who have multiple tattoos from one shop - it's "their" shop and they always go there. I feel that way about this place after one experience. read more

My piece was too big for a walk in. So I changed my mind quick to a sternum tattoo I've wanted forever but kept putting off because I was not excited about the area. I knew it would kill and it did. I hated it. But I'm glad I finally did it!! Same kind of thing I waited in the lobby for him to draw a custom piece based of the mandalas I showed him. I requested a changed. He redrew it. I approved and went back! It was right under and between my boobs, so I requested a privacy shield and wore stickers over my nipples. I felt very comfortable and respected! The piece took about two hours and it was absolutely beautiful! Nathan Fisher did an amazing job. The lines, shading and dot work are flawless!! This is a custom shop! You will be the only person with your tattoo! They don't copy. So that's important to know. When you choose an artist. Having been tattoo'd three times on regrettable whims and then a fourth time to cover up two of those whims, I thought long and hard about getting another tattoo. A year in fact. And in that year, I thought about the style I wanted for my little dog, Kangaroo. She's my first adult dog and without going I to all the details, she and I have been through a lot together in the last 12 years. So I wanted it to be really good. I had heard about Black 13 through a couple of co-workers and started researching their artists and Kirk George's work immediately stood out to me as the style I was going for. I emailed them during the holidays and Ren was very helpful. I went there today arriving (based on the recommendations of other Yelpers) early to make sure I could get a tattoo. For reference, today was a Monday and I arrived at 11:15am and was the first one there. However, by 11:50, there were four others waiting to go in as well. Ren and Kirk worked with my idea and made a few necessary changes. It took him about 40 minutes to draw it and set up, then about an hour to complete. I am BEYOND happy with the results and the price was surprisingly reasonable. The lobby was welcoming, the work area was very clean and open with a ton of natural light coming through the windows. A close friend came into town and we decided it was time to get new tattoos. It was #8 for each of us. We called around to a few shops to see if anyone had availability during business hours on a Friday. The individual on the phone was very kind and honest about availability and wait times. We took a chance and tried it out. The shop is so clean and the aesthetic is beautiful and not intimidating at all. The front desk staff was super kind, attentive, and asked amazing questions about the designs we were interested in. They kept us updated on timing even though they ran late; they let us know and apologized sincerely. The two artists we worked with, Evan and Marty were absolutely lovely. Great attitudes, incredible artists, and really paid attention to detail and our personal aesthetic. Our tattoos ended up beautiful. I would 100% recommend calling before you go and making an appointment if possible because this shop is always busy (a testament to their artistry). I would absolutely get tattooed here again. Emailed them directly through website 5/31( I understand it was a holiday, but Yelp also said on the hours they were open) did not hear back within 24 hours. Ink is permanent. (although there may be some painful removal services out there) I always think long and hard about adding tattoos to my body... how many times have you seen some questionable ink out there folks? I'm looking at you Tweety Bird tramp stamp.... With that being said, perhaps ol' Tweety Bird may have had some type of significance to the person who decided to permanently affix the little yellow bird to their lower back? Either way, you don't want to have cruddy work on your body since you will have to look at it for the rest of your life. (and apparently there are also tattoo snobs like me who will judge you for it too) With that being said, I have had the joy of having my work done by the ridiculously talented Michigan based Jerry Frost who owned an appointment only pop-up shop here in Nashville for a couple of years. His work is superb and I'm thankful to have it on my body! I honestly thought that I was done with adding art to my body but due to a pivotal experience in my life, I decided to once again add something to commemorate it to my side torso. Who do I turn to? Black 13 of course. It's pretty clear that they are THE place to go in Nashville if you want quality work done. Plus, I'm a sucker for their branding and hilarious advertisements that feature their artists and staff in amusing Christmas, Fight Club, or hockey game themes. They also lead up and participate in fundraisers and promotions that benefit great causes and nonprofit organizations. Those who give back, get back from me. I contacted proprietor Doy directly to book the appointment and to get a quote and he was very thorough on expectations, cost, and handled everything efficiently. On my appointment day, I was very pleased with my artist Marty who was friendly, professional, and DAMN... was he quick! Mind you, I had decided on a small font only piece but I can still appreciate how efficient he was with the process. Let's be honest, the less time that you have a needle poking your flesh is best for all parties involved, am I right? (unless you're really into that sort of thing?) Marty did a fantastic job and I love my new tattoo. It's simple and to the point but you'd be surprised how even the simplest things can be botched up, folks. While, Doy did give me a pretty tight range for my quote, I always expect that it's going to end up at the high end and this was the case here. No surprise. My only gripe would be for the "check-in" process. Mind you, I did arrive 2 minutes late for my appointment (called in and left a voicemail) but it apparently wouldn't have mattered as there was a short line of 2 people ahead of me. The staff member was deep in talks with the father/son who were at the check-in desk and there was a mom/daughter (was it take our children to get ink day?) ahead of me. I didn't want to be the jerk who jumps to the front of the line but I had an appointment. Ten minutes later, the father/son are still getting some kind of consultation by the staff member so I finally asked the ladies in front of me if they minded if I cut ahead since my appointment was NOW. They were totally cool with it but made it a point to share with me that they had been waiting for quite some time before I arrived. So, I finally did it... I interrupted the conversation between the father/soon and staff member and let him know that I was there for an appointment and that it was 10 minutes ago... the staff member immediately apologized and gave me a couple of quick forms to fill out and Marty came up front to greet me a few minutes later. Not sure how to correct this situation since I'm not going to pretend that I know how to run a tattoo business but I'm sure that there is some type of process that isn't so awkward for appointments and consultations to both be assisted when they walk in the door. The staff member was a really nice guy and when I checked out, he apologized again for the issue so I ain't mad atcha. Overall my experience was good and I would definitely come back to Black 13 again if I fancied another bit of ink. I also chatted with Marty about getting my back piece recolored in a year or so. Plus, I really dug the look and feel of their studio in Cummins Station. In my opinion, this is the premiere spot in our fair city (and possibly in the country) to get work done. TIP: Black 13 does not disappoint when it comes to swag. They have some great gifty items in here that range from apparel, phone cases, and even coloring books. Even if you're not ready to permanently ink yourself, but still love the art of tattoos, you can score some great items from here to showcase that appreciation. TIP 2: Parking validation is not included so attempt to find off-street meter parking or you'll be responsible for the paid parking across the street. I paid $13 for the couple of hours that I was at Black 13 and for my late lunch at Wild Wasabi afterwards. read more

This place is the best! I wanted typewriter lettering and am very picky about font since I am a graphic designer. I wanted Kirk to do the tattoo. after having looked at various tattoo parlors in town and portfolios, his line work seemed to be consistently crisp and straight when needed. Doy was amazing in discussing the design with me and making suggestions as to placement. He took the time to listen to exactly what I wanted and to explain the process to me. This was my first tattoo, and I'm sure it gets old explaining things to newbies! The ink they use at Black13 is organic and vegan, and they won't even do designs that are so small they will eventually bleed together over time. I initially wanted to get the lettering on the back of my neck, but Doy explained it was going to be too small there to look good later. He suggested another placement- the inside of my upper arm. I am so happy with the new placement, and I absolutely love the quality of the line work Kirk did. Thanks guys!! read more
