More importantly we'd like to give a shout out to our waiter Kylee. He was polite, attentive, and respectful while talking to us and the other customers. I know that giving 4 stars to a diner is a bit of an overkill, but I happen to like this place and their California Benedict is decent (despite poached eggs being overcooked and rubbery). I'm usually not one to complain but this was just really that bad. The place was clean, there was only 4 of us in the restaurant so service should have been quick. Orders 2 eggs over medium, crispy hash browns and English muffin. Eggs were great, hash browns were greasy and hardly cooked. My English muffin was not even toasted. It was warmed up and drowned in butter. To top it off like I said before only 4 of us in the place it took over 30 min to get our food. Unfortunately the entire meal was a waste of money. It is very surprising to see what a low rating this Black Bear Diner has. I have been to this location several times this year, and each time the service has been fast and friendly, and the food has been tasty and satisfying. The vibe here is laid-back, so we have never felt rushed out the door and have really enjoyed chatting and eating without feeling high pressured at all. Service has been great and attentive, and we have always been asked if we wanted refills on our drinks and sauces without ever getting an attitude from anyone. Surprisingly there has always been little to no wait times to be seated. There are plenty of food options for every budget, so you are sure to find something for everyone in your party to enjoy regardless of their finances or dietary preferences or restrictions. In particular there is a section of the menu that offers you their classic entrées in a smaller portion that is still satisfying, but it is priced very reasonably so you can have a full meal for just around $10. Like most diners, you will find that black bear offers breakfast at any time of the day. If you or someone who has a hearty appetite, the sleeper hit is the taco salad that is well balanced, a feast for your eyes as well as for your stomach. Do not forget to check out the dessert counter as you're being seated because you will want to save some room for the pies and the special Huckleberry ice cream that you can't find anywhere else. Every single time we have been here this place has deserved a five star rating. Unfortunately, like every other restaurant in current times, they are also dealing with a spike in food cost that we see every day that we go to the supermarket. Do not be shocked that the prices are not rock bottom. It makes me sad to write this, as a Davis native I've been coming to this location for years . But I cannot in good conscience recommend this place to anyone, as the service has been consistently lackluster, the food incorrect, and the overall ambience uncomfortable. We waited 30 min for our check; the busser noticed and gave us our check. The check didn't include coffee ( which our server forgot) ; Immediately our server appeared , snatched the check out of my hand, and charged drinks . Additionally, the steak was burnt to a crisp despite being ordered medium well. The cherry on top was the manager was incredibly rude and dismissive, as when I asked for a break down of a receipt he gave me attitude. My partner and I are obsessed with black bear and definitely consider it an amazing value meal. I would say that you have to be careful what you order! I've always found their breakfast foods to be great, but their steaks, ribs, and fried fish are usually low quality. Steak is small, overcooked; ribs are overly saucy and seem cooked from frozen, fried fish is soggy. However, the Grizz always feeds me for at least two meals if not more! Fortunately, we found parking with ease too :) Back to the food... The seasonal pumpkin pancakes were good! Nice and fluffy, drizzled with pumpkin spice :) Loved the whipped butter that was easy to spread. The veggie omlette was super fresh. I took my daughter and grandkids to Black Bear Diner in Davis for lunch today, and we had the best server Kylee. We were treated so kindly, and felt like royalty. My grandkids didn't spill their drinks, however I did all over the table, floor and booth. Kylie brought us lots of towels and helped clean up my mess with a smile. My grandson who is 11 noticed, and told me make sure you give Kylee a big tip. I highly recommend this Black Bear Diner. I have never done this but I need to share what happened to my wife & I just a couple of hours ago at the Black Bear Diner Davis location today. Visiting our son @ UC Davis during the long weekend, and stopped by for a brunch with our son. Busy day so waited around 25 minutes to be seated. Waited quite a bit but no one came by to take our order, but notice 2 other tables who were seated after us, being served. Called the server over to ask why they were being served before us, and the server, Nadia, said that is not how it works and the other tables are being served by someone else. If Nadia stopped there, it would've been whatever and done. But unprovoked, she continues in her exact words - "If you don't want to wait patiently, you are welcomed to leave" in a tone like talking to a child. OMG! I was in shock so I looked at her in dismay (with a dirty look) but didn't say a word. Nadia goes away and then, she proceeds to serve the table next to us who were seated after us, laughing it up while taking their order. That is just mean and not good. So then when I complained (rightfully so), Nadia says to me that "She" has the right to refuse service to anyone...clearly noted here that I never cussed, raised my voice nor directed insults at Nadia, and she is on this some sort of power trip treating the customer in such manner??!! Was it due to my less than perfect speaking English or skin color? Sincerely hope not. I am writing this because Nadia cannot treat customers in such manners and everything be Okay. I would appreciate a response from management that the incident will be reviewed and Nadia be properly trained at the least. read more

My wife and I stopped at Black Bear Diner for breakfast on our way to the Bay Area. We had had a bad experience here several weeks earlier, but everyone should get a second chance. I ordered a Southern Scramble and my wife chose pancakes. After 30 minutes they delivered our breakfasts. Apparently, they had prepared mine first and forgot to make my wife's order. So, mine had sat there and was absolutely cold. I watched patrons at two other tables send their food back for the same reason. Davis, CA location. We were seated quickly. And our beverage order was taken quickly. I ordered coffee and waited 10 minutes for creamer, despite asking twice. After ordering our food it took a very long time to arrive. Our waitress was no where to he seen and I saw our food sitting on the counter for several minutes before she showed back up. When the food arrived it was barely warm. My son's hollandaise sauce was congealed, and grits were a solid mass. My hash browns were greasy and inedible, the scrambled eggs were ok. My daughter's cinnamon bun french toast was rubbery and also inedible. Her fruit cup had rotten strawberries. My husband's ham and cheese omelette was ok, but still barely warm. Man has this place gone down hill. Even my wife, who loves Black Bear Diner, says we will not be returning for a long time. All the positive aspects of this place are long gone. First let's talk about the condition of the restaurant: it's needs a facelift, desperately. I don't think it's been revamped since it opened a decade and a half ago. The benches are falling apart and all surfaces have that sticky old oil feel (one bench has sky blue duct tape holding it together). Walls have crayon covering them and look grimey. Second: The service is pretty mediocre to terrible now. A while back a server dropped, very loudly, a "deez nuts" joke. Not particularly appropriate in a family restaurant with kids in it. Our server this time, while nice, was missing most of the time. Finally, the food is terrible now AND the portions are small. The chicken fried steak, my wife's go to, is breaded differently than it used to, and the gravy is watery and tastes strongly of fennel. My ribs were boiled, and despite low expectations, they still disappointed. At least bake them, or kiss them on a flat top with the BBQ sauce. The poor guy at the table over was also disappointed. I haven't been to a Black Bear Diner in a while, and always pass by this location while in downtown. They definitely have topped the list of locations I've dined at! Our waitress, Emily, was attentive and sweet. Food and drinks came out quickly! I got the New York steak medium rare, and it was a little tough but had great flavor. I got onion rings and fries on the side (to take home because I knew the portions would be insane) and they were crispy and delicious, although a bit under salted. My steak also came with a house salad and a cornbread muffin. The muffin was a standout- warm, and when topped with butter, absolutely decadent. My boyfriend got the chicken fried steak with hash browns, over easy eggs, and biscuits. The biscuits are HUGE and the eggs were cooked perfectly. He also got a huckleberry milkshake, which reminded me of a baskin robbins ice cream. Not too overpowering on the berry flavor and perfect to dip fries in! Do Not come to this place, there is this weird guy, Hobi or Hoabi I believe, he was just standing there, murmur gibberish nonsense to himself, or perhaps he was talking to himself and making like a growling noise, either way, he's probably got some mental issue, but the problem is he almost got in a fight with me and my friends, because how we're looking at him, well, we're just trying to eat and he's standing there, it's hard not to look at him, then I can make out something like he said he is going to spit in our food, then he proceeded to make that spit motion to one of the food dish that was brought out, but that wasn't our food, that was some people's order, so he was just going to "attack" someone randomly? I was able to find out his name and what he does from some of the staff that work there, apparently, he's just a dishwasher, ok, so this is too much, the price is a bit high, the food really isn't all that to brag about, then why does this place hired this weirdo that was just allowed to do this kind of weird things, that is so stupid, don't they understand this just hurts their own business, I'm not going back to this place as long as weirdo like this is around, terrible experience, in fact, I'm probably just not going there ever. First off, RAW EGGS! Said I wouldn't be back, but... got a coupon for a "free" meal. The reason why free is in quotes is because it wasn't actually free. I still had to pay, so it's very misleading. Better than nothing, but still. Same problems as before. Bad communication and slow service. I understand slow service, but communication could be better - both within crew and with customers. Management needs to get it together. Everyone is confused and doesn't know what they are doing and it's clear to customers. And you do not serve raw eggs. They once again messed up my order. Didn't have it together and did not work on it. I go in after 25 minutes and they're "working on my order." I go in again after 15 more min of waiting for my "free" bears choice meal and no one knows what is going on. No one knows where my order is, what I ordered, or anything about it. There is clear confusion and no communication with me. And they're trying to blame me? By continuously asking if I did X or Y, when they cashier I ordered from is right there. The whole team is working to find my simple bears choice order. How ridiculous. Turns out my meal was done, but they mislabeled someone else's order or something. Not even sure cuz they didn't even tell me what was going on. So I guess it's been sitting there and is now cold (once again). They asked me multiple times what I ordered and I confirmed with them each time and they still didn't have a clue. Even though this meal was "free" all this wasted time and annoying is not worth it. Eggs were raw - egg whites were completely liquid (see image). Everything was cold Bc of the confusion of the staff. So I had to recook everything. (Maybe I will get food poisoning from the raw eggs idk). TL;DR; A terrible experience once again. This time, I really will not be back. It took an hour to get 2 cold pancakes, 2 raw eggs, and 1/4 cold sliced ham. Don't even waste your time here. No one knows what they are doing and they don't care. read more

Visited this black bear locatIon after my kids and I volunteered at the Turkey Trot Run so we expected it to be crowded and slow...and it was. However, all of the staff were working and working hard while maintaining their sense of humor and customer service. The host was pleasant and funny while chatting with my kids. Our waitress apologized and advised us from the start that they were understaffed and she was doing what she could. Way to set that expectation! When our food arrived my waffle was a bit soggy, but I didn't have to say anything because she was first to notice. She quickly brought an extra plate to take it back and get me another one with me not having to say one word. The cooks were quick to make another one. At the end of our meal, she brought us two free brownies and didn't charge us for drink in an effort to make up for the situation. We just came back from Davis where we ate at the Black Bear Diner for lunch. Parking is plentiful, we were greeted at the front door and seated. We asked for a booth and got one. I actually ordered breakfast, my mom ordered the street tacos and dad got a burger and fries. All very tasty. My favorite part was how friendly and funny Cody the waiter was. Before we checked out, we decided to get the desert pies to go. One suggestion for the pies is to use regular crust instead of graham cracker crust. We will return in a few weeks! Thank you. read more
