It's probably been over a year since the last time we went to Tommy J's. We need to come more frequently. They've never disappointed us. They have paper menus but it's best to check online (QR code at the tables) because at least one of their burgers was not on the printed menu. I wanted to try the Tommy Gobbler, the 2025 entry in the Davis Burger Battle. The menu warned that substitutions were not allowed during the contest. I don't eat pork and the ingredients included bacon but they said they could make it without the bacon for me even though the contest is still going on. It was a turkey burger with brie cheese, arugula, cranberry sauce and a savory herb mayo. It was phenomenal. I want to return soon to try last year's entry that won the challenge, their Tommy's Turkey Banh Mi. My husband stuck with his favorite Swiss 'N' Shroomer Burger. The fries are different than they were a few years back, but just as good, if not better. Very crispy. One orders at the bar and they give you a number to place on your table. We chose to eat outside. It didn't take long for our food to arrive. We both asked for knives to cut our burgers. When clearing my plate the waitress asked how I liked the Tommy Gobbler. Loved it. Came here for the nostalgia! We came here on a weekday lunch time, and there were a few tables occupied already. We were greeted by the staff. Service was very friendly! There's a large menu you can reference on the wall. When you're ready to order, you can stand at the sign and pay ahead of time. Then you can find your seat and they will bring your order out to you. We ended up ordering the Aggie Jam (we had to make a choice between the Firehouse and Aggie Jam since they were winners as noted in the menu) with fries, cajun tater tots. Aggie Jam has housemade garlic blue cheese spread, housemade bacon jam, and housemade cajun mayo, with the burger patty, lettuce, onion, and tomato. Not sure what kind of bread they use, but it seems maybe housemade or specially made! The burger was generously sized, and probably could be split if you have a smaller appetite. This was a delicious, flavorful burger. I don't typically go for food with blue cheese, but I wouldn't have been able to tell. The burger was medium done, which was perfect. It was very messy to eat though! I would recommend this burger. The fries that came with the burger were the battered kinds, which made it perfectly crispy. They were salted well. The cajun tots included bacon, green onion, cajun spice and sauce. It was also generously sized, and I think it could be shared among 3 people, especially if you get a burger. I liked that they didn't smother the tots in sauce to the point of the tater tots getting soggy. The tater tots were already perfectly crispy, so that was helpful for texture and so delicious! As for the restaurant, it is an older establishment/inside isn't super modern. There are two restrooms, more cramped feeling, but clean. Parking is on the street (free) and is limited to 2 hours. On our way to Lincoln, to the Bob Dylan concert, we stopped in Davis to go to Tommy J's. The place was jammed so we knew we were in the right place for a delicious lunch. Normally, when I write a review, I make sure to take pictures of the ambience and the food. This was a different day. I was starving, and really wanted a burger. I had heard that these burgers were award-winning burgers. I was in a "feed me now" state of mind and didn't think much of what I was ordering. I remember waiting over 30 minutes for food. It seemed there was a large party ahead of us, and I don't really mind waiting for food when I know there are lots of people and a small amount of staff. When I finally got my food, it was warm and cooked to how I like it. Everything seemed in order, except for my tater tots. By the time I realized that my tots were overcooked I had already torn into my burger about a third of the way through, and thought it improper to ask someone for a different side of tater tots. They were hard, oversaturated with oil, and had no potato on the inside. My friend's plate seemed fine, but my sister had the same situation with her tater tots. Neither of us were interested in asking for a resupply because we knew how busy it was, but it was a bit of a downer at a place we thought was going to be award-winning and very satisfying. I think the firehouse burger had a lot of components but the blue cheese took over the flavor bacon and avocado. How have I not tried this place before now?! It took watching them highlighted on a Food Network show for me to try them out. I've been living in Davis for over eight years, and in the Sacramento area for 10 years before that, frequently visiting Davis... but have never eaten here before now. I think previously, I thought it was just a college bar. I love the ambience, cozy diner/small town bar feel. I chatted up the bartender a little bit, told him I came because of the Food Network show. Tommy, the chef & owner, came out a little later while we were enjoying his food, to chat a little bit also. Super nice guys and locals. If you are interested, you can watch "Best Bite in Town" produced by Guy Fieri, the very first episode of the first season is Davis! My husband had the Agee jam, the burger that was highlighted on the show, and I had their Philly cheesesteak. The Aggie jam is heavy, but you know what you're signing up for since it says a healthy serving of goat cheese. The Philly cheesesteak with au jus (could have used a little more salt) really hit the spot for lunch. I did not feel overly stuffed after. I can't wait to try more items on the menu, looks like they have several award-winning burgers. They also have a kids menu, and happy hour every weekday until 7 PM with half off appetizers. Tommy told us he just competed in another Food Network showdown that will air soon. Supposedly a burger show down. I think it's great for a small local business to highlight its food and the town. Eggs Benedict is excellent flavor, corned beef hash is more hash then corned beef but has great flavor. Need more hollandaise sauce however worth trying if you are here for brunch. Burger is not worth getting however fries are great. Can taste other foods in the fry oil but kind of expect it at a bar kitchen. The burger was cooked exactly as ordered however has no flavor. Where friends and family visit, they insist we go here for at least one of our meals. The burgers are hefty at 1/2 a pound. What a love about this place is that they always cook your burger exactly how you want it. I like my burgers medium rare and whenever I go to other burger joints around Davis, they always overcook it. My favorite is the Southern Cali because it has bacon and avocado. The burger is a 1/2 pound patty. Upon unhinging my jaw so I could bite into the monster burger I was treated to so much awesome juice which came out and ran down my hand. The burger was so flavorful. Tommy J's (or Froggy's) has the best burgers I've had in all of California. If you enjoy burgers and are in the Davis/Sacramento area, you're doing yourself a disservice by not stopping by. I've tried many of the beef burgers at Tommy J's and they are all delicious and enormous. The buns are (maybe a little too) fluffy, the toppings fresh, and the patty as juicy as a beef patty can possibly be. I'd recommend a patty done at medium, but the staff will always ask you for your desired doneness. The accompanying fries (or tots) are also audibly crispy and very addicting. My favorite burger topping at Tommy J's is their avocado - I like how they mash up the avocado and spread it across the entire bun so that you get an equal amount in every bite. Nobody likes watching chunks of avocado fall out of their burger or sandwich! Aside from the delicious food, the staff is always friendly and attentive, and sometimes the owner is there to take your order himself! Pre pandemic when I still ate meat it was a favorite for me because they cooked to temp consistently and had the option to serve it as a garden salad - delicious! An excellent burger joint that I always make sure to stop by when I'm in the area. Why? Because service is good, burgers are good, beer is cheap, and overall, it's just the best damn place for a burger in Davis. Their burger menu is pretty extensive, but each and every burger is extremely well done. The buns are buttered perfectly, the meat is cooked to your order (usually comes out a nice still sorta-pink medium if you don't specify) and the ingredients are always fresh and delicious. I've been here a bunch of times, and they've always been delicious (except burgers with bleu cheese, still can't get used to those). I'd recommend anything with their guacamole spreads (like the Southern Cali Burger), as they're extremely well done and tasty, as well as anything with bacon - you get 2-3 perfectly cooked, thick slices of bacon that are extremely satisfying (like the Southern -- I mean, Firehouse burger haha). Fries are also good, if not great depending on how hungry you are. Ultimately, Tommy J's is just a experience in a burger made well done right. Don't know how I only found out about this restaurant after graduating. Their burgers are awesome!!! Quite honestly, they have some of my favorite burgers in Davis. Their burgers are so unique, flavorful, and satisfying!!! My favorite burger is the Firehouse Burger. It has everything I love, including guacamole, blue cheese, and delicious sauce!! Even if one wasn't a fan of these things, there's definitely a burger flavor for you. Their sides are also amazing!! Their fries and tater tots are perfectly crisp, and their salads come with delicious sauces! I believe I had their honey mustard sauce with the salad. That might sound weird, but it was super light and delectable with the vegetables! That sauce was also pretty good with the fries or tater tots too! Personally, the fries. Specifically, the Cajun fries. Anytime...all the time...every time. Other than that, burgers are good. Service is great. Staff are awesome. COVID restrictions are observed. Outside dining in front. Moderately priced, generous portions. Not much more to ask for. A note, the final star would be the buns. These are often too greasy for my liking. I'm not sure if they are toasted in oil, or butter, but I do remember doing the paper napkin test and it was properly coated.
