Who is managing this place? Hosts standing around or bumping into each other while standing around with people waiting. Zero training -obviously. Sad for them. One host had so much hair in his eyes I'm surprised he could see. Maybe he couldn't. Turkey dinner was cold- couldn't find waitress to tell her. At least they comped that meal. Everything at Black Bear is so delicious and feels like it was just made for you! This location literally has the best servers and I love the family environment feeling you get when you come in. Some people think smiling servers don't make much of a difference but to me it really does! Nothing greater than a friendly face, especially when you're automatically an anxious wreck around strangers lol. I went at prime breakfast rush with my niece, sister, and her husband and of course they were packed. But we were able to be seated within a few minutes since we chose to sit at the bar. Even with all those customers, the waiters still made us feel welcomed and everyone was so attentive. Even those not assigned to our section were ready and willing to help with mundane tasks (such as filling water glasses back up, grabbing tobasco sauce etc) but this stuff matters! The fresh-squeezed orange juice is a must at Black Bear. I ordered the Chicken Apple Sausage 2 egg combo but anything you get is practically guaranteed yummy and fresh. After going to this location ever since they opened their doors we will NEVER return. They have consistently gone down hill over the course of our last 4 visits but their handling of a To Go Order last night slammed the door shut on ever going there again. I tried to order on line and by phone before giving up. I drove there figuring it had to be a better exerpience in person - I was TOTALLY wrong. The two young women working the front desk had apparently never been trained in how to do a To Go Order. The first one simply could't find the Open Faced Turkey Sandwich in the computer, so pulled in another person to help. Although getting the order entered took a tremendous amount of time, that wasn't the worst of the situation. I ordered the following three meals. 1. Fish & Chips - the only order that was correct. 2. Open faced turkey sandwich, with gravy on the side, along with a side salad with Ranch Dressing on the side. The gravy was NOT on the side, there was no side salad at all. 3. I ordered ribs - NOT PRIME RIB, which I was charged for. When I had to return to the restaurant (thankfully just from the car and not from home) because I had only two of the three meals ordered. The following ensued. I returned to the counter saying I was short a meal. The young woman helping called the manager over. He said "We are out of Prime Rib." I said I had't ordered prime rib. However, I was also more than a little confused by the fact that I wasn't told the order was short a meal and offered a chance to change what I wanted. The manager's explanation was "Well, as you an see we are busy." As if that was an excuse for what amounts to tryig to rip off a customer by keeping their money, not offering a substitution and seding them on their way. As I said NEVER AGAIN. I'm not saying ever to Black Bear, simply to this location, where people are obviously not trained. In addition to the above when I when back to the front desk to check on my order, I was told I had to go to the counter. Question, why wasn't I told that when I placed the order? read more

We've been to this particular location several times and the food and service are constantly on point. I especially like the sausage. They make their own and it's got a lot of flavor. The pancakes just take me away to my moms. If you're really hungry try the Bigfoot chicken fried steak. It's very good and more than enough. As chain places go I've never been disappointed with them from Cali to Oregon now Utah. I've even been to the original one in north Cali. Some of the biggest bear claws I've ever seen as well. read more

My first time at a Black Bear Diner. It was a nice meal. I had Chicken & Waffles, as it's my guilty pleasure and I always have to try it when I see it, so at this point I'm a bit of a Chicken & Waffles connoisseur. This one did well by me. The waffle was nice and crispy, syrup was good, and the chicken didn't disappoint either... it was big! One thing I didn't love was just how much breading was on it though.. of course it's fried, I know there's going to be breadcrumbs.. but something about them overpowered the dish. It had some tasty seasoning on it, and good flavor, but that flavor made me lose some of the syrup & waffle taste that's an important part of the dish. My wife loved her chicken fried steak. Side note: We witnessed a pretty crazy thing happen while we were here. When we were waiting for a table, we found a hostess that clearly didn't want to be there. She couldn't be bothered to actual try to put on a nice face and treat strangers with kindness. We never had to put up with her luckily, but we watched while we waited and throughout our meal at her get clearly fed up with customers simple requests, roll her eyes, the list goes on and on. I wanted so badly to take a video! I've never seen anything quite like it before. I don't fault Black Bear, I just don't know how she could keep her job much longer there. I know they are still newer... The girl didn't effect this review at all. I'm sure we will be back to try some more things & see if we get dinner & a show again! read more

UPDATE**** We have eaten breakfast here at least once a week since they opened. It seems like since the training staff left the warm friendliness from the staff left with them. Josh is great but we always sit at the bar and today while we there there, not one single staff member smiled at us or said hi or asked if we needed anything. It's a totally different feel than it was a couple weeks ago. The food is still fabulous so that keeps us coming back for now. The staff was great and I love the training team that is here teaching them all the way this chain runs. The food was fabulous!! We sat at the bar and had a great server named Kasey. He was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. It was really fun watching the kitchen staff and seeing the operation of the place. Did I mention the food was fabulous? If you are looking for a large helping of delicious food, Black Bear Diner is a great place to go! Eating here made me feel like I was going to walk outside to the Yellowstone wilderness or a small mining town. But alas, I was actually still in Layton. We came as a group of 6 adults and 4 kids. We had to wait about 10 minutes for them to get a table set up for us, but once we got in there was plenty of space. The whole place is very roomy and you don't have to worry about being less than an arm's length away from another table. We ordered our food; we all got breakfast foods, which felt fitting for the environment. I got the hobo omelette with the red potatoes on the side and a biscuit. It was delicious! There was a ton of food, which filled me up but didn't tip me over the edge. The omelette was delicious! The hobo omelette was filled with different meats, onions, and spinach. The potatoes were perfect! I put some of the habanero hot sauce on everything - perfection! Hot, but the perfect amount of flavor. I was disappointed with the biscuit. It was huge, but a little dry, and hard and crumbly in some places. I would probably go for the pancake next time. The waitress was friendly, but a little quiet. Service was about average; not bad, but not great either. She was present to help us with our needs. Food didn't come out right away, but we didn't have to wait an exceedingly long time either. I ordered the "Denver Omelette " with hash brown. I have never had such a BAD Omelette or Hash Browns. The hash browns had been left on the grill probably since lunch and I was ordering dinner after 4 pm. The hash browns were more like kettle chips, but only hard on one side but weren't eatable or didn't even taste good. The Omelette wasn't an Omelette, it was just egg as base with loose vegetables and ham on top or inside a folded egg with a little cheese on top. I told the waitress but she didn't have any interest. The vibe inside is very homely and makes it feel like you're on a road trip in the California redwoods eating at some stop-on-the-road diner. The chicken and waffles were cooked almost perfectly and I loved the crunchy breading on the chicken. Only thing I thought there was room for improvement on was the hashbrowns, they could stand to be cooked a little longer. Also the Cornbread Muffins are divine! The service was fast and friendly, our waitress was great and took care of all our requests with ease. One small nitpick I have about this place is their paper menus, it seems like they would have to print out new ones everyday (which is wasteful) and if they reuse them it's kinda unhygienic. Absolutely bad service. Waited 50+ minutes for our food for 2 people and the restaurant was slow. I heard multiple staff and a manager talk like they were in jr high and all there jr high drama and we're simply just goofing off. I get you wanting to have fun at work but your work comes first then you can have fun and joke around with co workers. It was ridiculous. My wife and I love the Black Bear blackened salmon dinners at the Layton, Utah location. Every item in this top quality meal has always been so perfectly prepared that our taste buds are astonished every time we have ordered it, so we choose this dinner nearly every time we visit. Even their cornbread muffins (included in this dinner) are to die for--the best we've ever tasted. Does this place just happen to have an over-the-top chef that always gets our orders? Or do all of their chefs magically excel in preparing this amazingly delightful salmon dish? Or is it that we always eat there at around 4 pm when the restaurant is not very busy? I think this restaurant is breakfast oriented. One of our party of six ordered breakfast and it looked very good. Others ordered lunch and for the most part were disappointed. The fish and chips were frozen when cooked and not very fresh. The fries were soggy and not very crisp. The grilled cheese sandwiches were comprised of minimal cheese and not appetizing. BESTPANCAKES EVER! We absolutely love Black Bear's pancakes! They are a sweet cream pancake that is fluffy and delicious! It comes with the house syrup that is the best addition to an already mouthwatering pancake! We have also tried the country fried steak, bacon, the ScramBOWL, country red potatoes and a country fried eggs Benedict (limited time special) that were all very very good. The only things as have had that weren't amazing was a burger (nothing special) and the sausage patties (didn't care for the spices in the sausage). Establishment was fairly new and clean but already getting dusty. My kids enjoyed the Black Bear themed decorations. Food was average quality with decent portion sizes. Iced tea was grossly over-sweet. Don't order salads there, I've seen fresher lettuce at McDonalds. Now the kicker: Service was atrocious! On top of failing to bring out enough utensils, bringing the wrong side dish, and with two dishes stone cold to the point they were inedible (cold biscuits and gravy anyone?), the server (young brunette, large glasses) was just air-headed and unapologetic beyond belief. All of this wouldn't have been such a big deal but she would disappear from view for 10-15 minutes at a time, leaving us to hopelessly crane our necks while trying to convince our kids to eat pancakes with a spoon. And before you ask - no, it wasn't busy, it was a Wednesday evening about 5pm. Worst $46 I've spent at a restaurant in a while! You have to try the pancakes!! So yummy! I believe they call them sweet pancakes and they definitely are! I got the breakfast with eggs and bacon along with the pancakes and it was very filling! I ate the pancakes the next day because it was just too much for one sitting! My mom got the cinnamon roll French toast and it's literally sliced cinnamon rolls and then they "French toast" them! This was our fourth time at this location and the service was so bad. The waitress had no clue about the menu. The coffee was cold (okay it was evening but still should not have been cold). I ordered chicken Parmesan. It was delicious so this is the reason for the more than one star. Hubby and son had burgers with no complaints. I do not think we should have to ask a waitress with one other table to get coffee or drink refills six times.
