Lunch time. I got a cheddar bacon burger with fries. I got 3 full size bacons and everything was great. My fires were nice and hot and cooked perfectly. My husband got the tri tip dip and he liked that a lot. My son got a grilled cheese and he ate it all gone. My waitress Sharon was a great waitress bot to just us we could see her working the room and getting the job done. I would have given 5 but those menus are just a damn no no. They give you this cute newspaper like menu, the problem is that they are reusing them. There is no way to disinfect them. I'm sorry that's just nasty I had us all go wash our hands after that. Usually I don't get too excited about chain restaurants but the experience and food we had here today was fantastic. The diner has a hometown diner feel with it's friendly staff and newspaper menus, which are huge by way. Our server was Lizzie, and she was phenomenal! She was attentive, cheerful and friendly. She had great recommendations for us and it was obvious that she was familiar with the menu. Everything that we ordered was delicious! The pancakes were super fluffy and light (some of the best I've ever had), the steak was perfectly grilled and tender, and the tri-tip dip was flavorful. The only thing that was surprising was the meatloaf because it had more vegetables in it than one would expect, and having those larger chunks of veggies inside it was a little disconcerting. HOWEVER the flavor was still very good. Anyone looking for great diner food should definitely give the Black Bear Diner a try! read more

A good spot for families to eat. There is a variety of food to choose from, and the prices have been reasonably set. They have supported AYSO soccer along the way. I have been happy to support them. Well, I gave this place a second chance. I regret it now. Bad experience on both occasions. I ordered the grizz again, sunny side up eggs and extra crispy hashbrowns. Hashbrowns came crispy on the top and white on the bottom, I asked my server Kacie if they could please make them crispy on the bottom also, she scoffed and said "that's as crispy as they get. " I replied back, "so you can't cook both sides of hashbrowns? I don't get it..". She angrily took away my plate and put it under the heat lamp. I waited for 10 minutes and she brought me the same plate except now my egg yolks are now not cooked how I ordered them due to the heat lamp cooking the yolk. She brought hashbrowns on a separate plate except now instead of it being one even flat piece of hashbrowns like the last time, they're in a pile. I asked why they didn't just put the same hashbrowns crispy side up and crisp the white bottom? I lifted the bottom of the hashbrowns and showed her they were still white. Asked why they didn't just leave the hashbrowns how they were and throw the white side onto the grill? She smirked at me and said "I told you that was as crispy as they could get them the first time". I politely asked her to remove them from my order and that I didn't want them anymore. She glared at me angrily and walked away. I ate the food and got up to pay. While paying for the food I told her that what she did was extremely rude and unprofessional. She purposely made me wait extra to spite me, and simply dumped the same hashbrowns into a pile on a plate and mixed them to make them look like they actually re-cooked them when they didn't. She laughed then gave a huge grin and abruptly looked down and couldn't make eye contact because she knew she had been caught in her spiteful deception. Will be contacting the Redding corporate office Monday and notifying them of this locations lack of standards. Two separate incidents with two different servers both acting rude and unprofessional, same low kitchen food quality, and never a manager present that walked over and asked if everything was okay. I've never had ANY problems with the food or service in any other black bear diners in the years I've been going to their other locations. 0/5 stars, never coming to this location again. read more

Pleasantly surprised! I've heard nothing but good things about Black Bear Diner... but it's a chain so I wasn't rushing to try it. I'm glad I finally stopped in. Service was great. The wait was reasonable (15 minutes for two on a Sunday around 1PM). Portions are HUGE. Price is fair. I got the Southern Scramble and I highly recommend it! It's so good. they gave me so many potatoes that I took about half of them home. Their house made sausage was very flavorful. Honestly, I can't wait to go back. Even if it's a chain, they do it right. I loved this place for breakfast. They had fun decor with black bears everywhere. The menus read like newspapers. The bar stools were carved with fun proverbs, each one different. The wood columns throughout the building had black bear carvings on them. They have huge bear claws that I had to take home and made 3 meals out of. I ordered the California omelet which had mushrooms and avocado. I got a side of fruit with it. It tasted very good and I had a hard time finishing my meal due to the size. My husband ordered the regular breakfast with the chicken apple sausage meat choice. The sausage had good flavor. I was worried that a "chain" diner would not be any good, but I enjoyed my meal and will be back again soon. read more

OMG! French Toast Bear Claws!?!?! Did I have one? Did I survive it? Ah, no on both counts. But the spousal unit did. I had something more along the lines of a traditional breakfast where I drown the eggs in hot sauce. But maybe next time I'll give the ginormous offering of too much pastry the next time. The menu is huge. It's hard to believe that everything is cooked fresh to order, but it all tasted really fresh. The biscuits are much bigger than you would think. They currently have cheese sandwiches for a limited time so I tried the breakfast sandwich minus the meat. The breakfast cheese sandwich was very good and next time I will try the all cheese sandwich. I like to visit during the week because it's never crowded like it is on the weekends but after trying the pancakes in the past, I needed to try something else because the pancakes are just too heavy. Typically I frequent at the location in Riverton. We've never had a bad experience there. The hostess didn't tell us who our waitress was, waitress did not introduce herself and she lacked any sort of care for our table because there was a larger group in. We got two coffees, after adding creamer to the coffees, there was some white chunks (actual chunks from the creamer) floating around in our coffee. I made a joke to my boyfriend that I should've started a timer from when I noticed the chunks til when the waitress circled back to the table. She forgot a straw for one of our waters and said she would be "right back" with the second straw for us so we assumed it shouldn't take long. We ended up waiting close to 15 minutes before I turned and saw the waitress and two others chit-chatting behind the hostess counter, waited another few minutes and decided to go up and let them know; got greeted with a "did you need something?". Got a new cup of coffee, and new creamers, she walks away - must have been the same batch of creamers. Same deal, chunks floating in one of our coffees. After waiting another 5+ minutes the waitress went to the table right next to us and ignored us when I said "excuse me ma'am". She eventually came back over after probably about 7 minutes. Got us a new coffee. In the meantime I grabbed the creamer from the empty table next to us. There was no sort of compensation for waiting 20+ mins after being sat to be able to drink our coffee and we waited close to 45mins total to get our food. Pancakes and some eggs. She said she was going to talk to the manager about the bad creamers, but never heard back. The first waitress either dropped our table or went home because we got a new waitress right after we got our food and she was super attentive; checking in 4 times, less than 10mins apart each time. Didn't catch the attentive waitresses name though. You would think most people wouldn't write a whole life story into a review about coffee and leave a two star review, but the service from everyone (except for the last lady) was so trash and I mean that from the bottom of my heart having worked food management/service since I was 17 read more

Just had Daddy & Daughter Breakfast here. We got the "Grizz" plate to share. Food wise, it was delicious as always and plenty of it too in portions. I don't eat a big breakfast anymore so sharing it with my baby girl was perfect; more leftovers for the older teens later! The waitress were superb here. Refilling my coffee and making sure my little girl was doing well too. She just had the orange juice. I do say, the ambient noise here at the Layton restaurant is so much better than the noise at the Long Beach Restaurant. At 7am in the morning, there was no wait time. Usually I'm a fan of this place... but after the experience I just had with their staff, I don't think I'll ever be coming back. Raul the manager was completely disrespectful and had no care for his customers. They have a giant sign on the front of the restaurant that reads "Steak and Eggs $10.99 All Day" and that's it. No indication of what steak size or anything specific. So we order "steak and eggs" when we go to pay the steak and eggs came out to $21.99, so we ask about it... he looked at us and said "well you should have known. Came to Black Bear Diner on Mother's Day, partially because our other options were super busy and partially because most places in the greater Salt Lake area are closed on Sunday. Overall an underwhelming experience, sort of a Western take on a Denny's situation, but like...not as good. The service was a little lackluster, the girl who served our table was nice enough but when we first walked in one of the waitresses spilled water (or pop, who's to say what it was) on my cousin's leg as she was clearing a table and didn't say sorry or anything. Not a big deal, but at least apologize. The portion sizes here are ridiculously large, apparently they're meant to be large enough to have a full meal as leftovers. Fine if you live around the area, but not too handy if you're traveling, just makes you feel like you're wasting food. Even the smaller portion dishes like my supposedly "small" size club sandwich with sweet potato fries were pretty big. None of the food was downright bad, but none of it was very exciting. My sandwich was fine and the sweet potato fries were decent, if not a little soggy. My parents were underwhelmed by their breakfast dishes, although I did really like the biscuit (which was also unnecessarily large). The hash browns were very undercooked. Overall: meh. If you're going for a cheap, quick diner just get Denny's, or if you're looking for a better diner find a different local place instead of this California-based chain. read more

Not only is the pancake on top not nearly the product we normally receive but cheese was topped all over the eggs and pancakes. This is not the level of product we are used to getting from this restaurant that we love and will definitely reconsider where we order our breakfast from. We've been coming to this Black Bear Diner for a while now, great place friendly workers up until today. Me and my family walk in and there was a hostess/waiter standing there looking at us walk in, she asks us how many people and I let her know. Then what it seemed like a friend of hers walks up to her and they start chatting for quit awhile. Me and my family were standing there still waiting to be seated and the girl continues to talk to her friend so we ended up taking a seat in the waiting area of the restaurant. Then after she was done chatting it up she looks at us and says "oh I didn't see you there" when she cleared obviously did. I came here with my parents and they enjoyed their fajita burgers very much but I had some issues with my order. Sidnee, our server, was sweet and helpful so I don't lay this on her, but I asked for ketchup & mustard in place of mayo on my cheddar & bacon burger (mayo on a cheeseburger is disgusting,) but it came with mayo anyway. She was very apologetic and had them make me a new one. The new one came out 20 minutes later without the mayo but with fry sauce, or thousand island dressing instead. Oh well, you can't win 'em all. The bacon was thick cut but cooked to a cinder. The patty was just ok. It was thick but on the smaller side & probably a little overdone, but flavorful. Also, now...I don't know if there's any science to back me up on this but it seemed the burger was built upside down? The lettuce & tomato were on the bottom and kept spilling out due to the geometry of the patty. I had a devil of a time trying to keep it all together & the bun got soggy from whatever dressing was on it. Overall, pretty disappointing. I ordered onion rings because they were out of fries (how does a restaurant that shares a parking lot with a Winco run out of french fries???) Anyway, the onion rings were thick cut (again promising) but they were hard as hockey pucks and only half as flavorful. I gave them to my dad and he was pretty stoked about them, but he's in his 70s so wearing socks with sandals and a cheap buffet gets him pretty stoked as well. The second plate Sidnee brought out with burger attempt #2 had several broken pieces of onion ring and about 3 complete rings. It was a sad display. I then kinda watched as other people's food was brought out and began connecting the dots. Generally speaking this seems like a place that focuses on quantity over quality, i.e. generous amounts of lower quality ingredients. Or maybe it's just the fact that it seemed entirely staffed by high schoolers? If you're into atmosphere, it was kinda dirty and noisy, lots of tables not cleared & kids crying. I have no desire to come back for this. But on a good night when they've got their crap together, this is probably a 3 star place. read more
