This is a great little deli. It's in a bit of a strange area, but it's certainly worth taking a trip to. Today, I ordered the "Robster" sandwich: chicken, ham, spinach, cheese, tomatoes, and honey dijon mustard. It came out pretty quickly and one of the women working there brought it right to our table, served on real plates. The sandwich was really superb--I loved all the different flavors going on. It came with macaroni salad, which a lot of people seem to love. I wasn't a fan, but that doesn't mean it's not good--I've just never liked macaroni or potato salad. The sandwich was only $6! Everyone working there was super nice, and it had a great, comfortable atmosphere. This is very close to a 5-star review, but I want to go back first before upgrading it. Best deli in town! Authentic food plus American options as well. They have amazing chicken noodle soup as well as other homemade soups! The owner is very friendly as is all the staff. We wanted to have something light, non greasy to avoid throwing up on the roller coasters later and picked this place for a quick food stop. The chicken salad hoagie was delicious, and fresh. The Black Forest Deli was such a delicious treat. I am Ukrainian so walking into the restaurant felt like a big welcome home. The rossolnik (pickle) soup and the chicken soup tasted like my grandmother made it, sprinkled with dill and a spoon of sour cream just how I love it! My partner ordered the snitzel with mushroom sauce while I ordered the vareniki platter with potato and cabbage served with special authentic fried onion, sour cream and dill. Both dishes were really good and left our bellies smiling. The compot and ginger tea drinks were also very refreshing. Just as other Yelpers attested to, this is a gem of a place! The mother/daughter team are so nice! They have authentic Russian food but also wonderful choices for traditional-type sandwiches too. DH and I ordered panini sandwiches, which were FANTASTIC! I had not eaten breakfast in the morning, so I ordered a side bowl of Borscht soup ($3 more when you order a sandwich). Sandwiches were about $7.50. I couldn't have eaten another bite, but every bit was a delight. This is located on a corner of a fairly residential area. It's a little tricky, but you'll find it if you're looking. Parking is not abundant, but it's worth a short stroll from where you do find a place to park. Highly recommend this place. read more

This is a good place to get true, homemade creations. My friend and I each got a panini. They were quite good. But, the other food we got wasn't impressive, unfortunately. We got the Russian beef and cabbage roll, and the owner gave us some macaroni salad on the side. The roll is a little bit of an acquired taste, and needed more seasoning. First off, let me say that Black Forest Deli (BFD) isn't really a 'deli' in the way you may be accustomed to. If you're from NY or NJ, it won't feel like home. I think it'd be more accurate to think of it as a cafe or bistro. But that's good, because it is great for what it is; a small cozy place that is ALL about the food! I'll keep this simple. Order the Halupkis (Golumki if you're Polish) or the Pirogies. Fantastic. The Borscht is also wonderful but not really my thing. You can't go wrong with any hoagie or sandwich (the Italian is fantastic, and my wife really likes the Roast Beef). Make sure you get some macaroni salad also. Having stopped into the Black Forest Deli for lunch on Monday, I was surprised by the wide array of items featured on the menu. They have a selection of Eastern European classics, traditional deli fare, and offer catering services. For lunch, my girlfriend and I selected a small BLT hoagie, fresh fruit inspired salad, and homemade pierogi's. Everything was quickly prepared and tasted great. The pierogi had sauerkraut on top which was amazing and lent a great flavor to the item. Overall, I was impressed and would def. go back in the future. This is a very nice restaurant/deli. Informal, homemade food, ability to chat about what dishes are and what they contain. Some Thursday evenings are dinner nights so there are times when it is open in the evenings. I enjoyed all the variances in the flavor of the foods. If I was around this area more, I would be going there for lunch a lot more. I had takeout from this place but I would love to come and sit and have lunch here. WOW. What a place. Where to start... I walked in and was greeted with a SINCERE smile. I looked over the menu for 5 minutes because there were SO many options. Hot plates? Hot Subs? Cold Subs? Borscht? Because I was eating on the go I ordered a Arzunian Panini. Turkey, avocado, tomato, spinach and cheese. ALL of the ingredients were very fresh, the cheese was perfectly melted and the bread was crunchy on the outside, yet soft on the inside. Great portion, yet I was SO sad when I was finished. This is a great local sandwich shop in West Bethlehem. I finally made it here after passing by almost daily. It's a little deli that changed hands over the years but it's always been the same business for the most part. It has a decent sized menu consisting of various soups and sandwiches. Their menu is bigger than it looks - you just gotta ask. Their hoagies are packed with plenty of fresh deli meat. I ordered the corned beef hoagie and it was the perfect size for this glutton. One walks into the Black Forest Deli for the first time, expecting the usual diner/deli fare, but one look at the "Kiev" section of the menu tells you that there are more than sandwiches, wraps, and soft drinks. My wife and I arrived during the lunch hours and were warmly greeted by Vica, the daughter half of a mother/daughter team (Milana or Mama is the chef and equally charming host) who suggested that a first-timer might be interested in a sort of sampler of Russian dishes, and I was so impressed by that amazing lunch that my wife and I immediately made reservations for one of the 5-course Russian dinners, a BYOB affair that is unlike anything I've experienced in the Lehigh Valley outside a family dinner. Each day different Russian/Ukrainian dishes are featured, and I highly recommend that you take whatever is available; "it's all good," an overused expression, but in this case it's the best description of the culinary treat that awaits. And I can't remember so many customers looking as if they were visiting family for Sunday dinner--there is indeed a family atmosphere to go with the lovingly prepared food. Walking into Black Forest Deli is like walking into the warm embrace of your mother on Christmas Eve, or any other holiday where you haven't seen your mother in awhile. This also assumes that your mother can make food as good as they do at BFD, which probably isn't the case, so, basically stepping into BFD is something unlike you've ever done before because if you haven't done it then you wouldn't know! I recommend eating any of their hoagies. I have had the three foot long hoagie once and it was delicious. I couldn't eat all of it, but it was still worth it. Also, I tend to go on the unimaginative side and stick with the "boring" hoagies, but from what I understand there are a ton of great Russian specialties here. I just wish they would serve more ice cream. They also have a lot of soda. Also, they have a fun menu. They are also really nice. Also they tweet a lot. Also, go eat here. OH and go in the morning so you can get a breakfast sandwich, they put butter INSIDE THE SANDWICH. WHO DOES THAT?!?!?!? They will give you a hug in there if you're nice to them and compliment their cooking. They should get a couch though. I always want to nap there after I eat. I love it there.
