Golden Boar is a Ukrainian restaurant in the Huntingdon Valley Marketplace shopping center. From the outside, it may look like a regular strip mall restaurant. But inside is something really special. In my experience, it isn't very easy to find Ukrainian restaurants in the U.S. (certainly several in New York), and so I was thrilled to find Golden Boar. And it lived up to all my hopes and expectations. First of all - strip mall from the front, but it's all charm and coziness inside. The decor includes lots of photographs and beautiful table coverings - but the highlight of the interior is their play on the Ukrainian Pich (stove). What looks like a beautiful, traditional Pich is an opening and passthrough to the kitchen. It adds such charm and character to the space. But onto the food. I happen to love Ukrainian food, so we were excited and hungry and knew we would order too much food and have leftovers for later. We ordered and shared: Yushka (a porcini mushroom broth served with mushroom dumplings and a huge chicken meatball) with a garlic bun on the side on the recommendation of our server; Huliash (stewed beef with potato dumplings, and prunes); herring (with egg salad, boiled beet, and onions); and potato and cheese varenyky with cracklings). I would order and eat every bite again. And I wish I'd had more room to finish our plates and order a dessert! (Looking back, we should have brought friends with us just so we could order and share more of the menu)! The staff are friendly, and the service was wonderful and fast. My wife and I stopped by today for an early dinner. We shared all the dishes. The flaki was very tasty, the herring appetizer was very well presented and the herring paired nicely with the pickled onions, egg salad and beets. Would order that again. The menu didn't explain what came with the veal brains entree but the waitress kindly explained the dish. As it is isn't a common dish, we ordered that and were pleasantly surprised. Beautiful presentation and it was served with a beet horseradish sauce and grilled veggies. The grilled pork tenderloin was tender and came with a side of bigos. I stopped in a few weeks ago really excited to try this restaurant out (after seeing great reviews) However, I left feeling a little disappointed. We ordered the yushka soup, pierogi & stuffed cabbage (golubtsy). The soup wasn't really worth the price. To me it was extremely bland. The stuffed cabbage was also ok. Pierogies weren't memorable either. The pierogis and stuffed cabbage were presented very nicely.Perhaps I ordered the wrong items off of the menu. The inside atmosphere is welcoming and the staff friendly. I just didn't order anything I would recommend like the other reviewers. Good for an adventurous date night.or a family get together. Superb food. I never had Ukrainian food and was shocked how good it is. The food is sublime (at least what I had was). The food quality is way better than what you will pay, Expect for appetizer and entree to run about $18 to $25 per person if you are sharing the appetizers. The flavor profiles pair well with beer or lighter wines like dry blushes, riojas, pinotages or a serious chardonnays. Fortunately there is a liquor store in the same parking lot for wine and a Weiss' Market that sells beer and wine as well next door. The exterior hides the quaint village atmosphere inside. Yes, you want to open that door! Yes, you have to go inside! The ambiance is soft with classic Ukrainian music playing in the background. Definitely a good spot for a light hearted date night, when you are actually interested into talking to your date. This is a mom and pop establishment so the service was done by one waitress and the hostess and they handled about 20 customers across 4 tables well. The restaurant was 1/4 full. Two of the tables were large family parties and the feel was very calm and friendly. All customers appeared happy and enjoying a place where they can talk to each other. There were three owner operators off to side keeping an eye on things, but the two servers had everything under control. The decor was much nicer than most restaurants. Very European village vibe. Can't give it more than 5 stars unfortunately. Had an appointment a couple doors down and was early enough that we had time for dinner. Figured we'd just grab pizza from the place in the same strip mall. Looked in as we were driving by and too many kids. (Feeling old) so it was gonna be sushi. As we we're heading to the sushi place we saw the signs for this place. Hey! Let's give them a try. Nice sized place with a cozy atmosphere. Not rustic but trying. There were a few other diners but not real busy. The server dropped off menus and took our drink order. Unfortunately no liquor license but it is BYOB (I know for next time and there will be a next time!) Started off with cream cheese buns and found out one roll is more than enough for two hungry people. (Doggie bag!). The rolls are scrumptious. The cheese is absolutely delicious. You could make a meal of just the roll. My daughter got the borscht and I got the golubtsy Both were incredible. Her soup was so good she was on her phone telling her friends and scheduling a lunch with them. My golubtsy was one of the best I've ever eaten. Sheer perfection. We were staying at a hotel and found the excellent Yelp reviews. Didn't make a reservation but the owner had us come back in 15 minutes which allowed us to pick up some wine next door. Upon returning we were happily greeted. The appearance and atmosphere were that of Europe. Large groups of jovial customers celebrated. The menu had many appealing options, hard to pick just 1 entree apiece. We began with garlic bun which was fluffy, hot, and outstanding(and a bargain at $2)! Chicken Kiev and a Pork Hock were wonderful choices. My husband gobbled down his pork but I was lucky enough to have leftovers in Virginia the next day. Service was outstanding. The whole meal was amazing, with generous portions delightfully prepared. To be perfectly clear, my parents came to the US from Ukraine in the late 1940's. I was born here and am a US citizen but have deep Ukrainian roots. As a result, my Mom's cooking was VERY Ukrainian in nature and I missed those early days growing up in New Brunswick, NJ. Fast forward to today and a family member found the Golden Boar and recommended we go there for dinner. Well 9 of us met there on Sunday 3/3 for dinner and had an amazing meal. The ambiance was so reminiscent for me growing up as I heard Ukrainian spoken throughout the restaurant with various celebrations going on. Young and old were there which added this as a great social setting of friendly people and strong roots showing. The menu is totally approachable for Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian alike with delicious dishes throughout. I selected Borsht, the Pansky Deruny (stuffed potato pancakes), and Golubtsi (stuffed cabbage). Every course was amazing. Totally reminiscent of my youth but with some delicious additions making it a true 5 star meal. We also shared Perogies stuffed with potato which was truly delicious. All in, a wonderful evening with family and we all had amazing dishes. I brought back a full meal four my son, who had never had Ukrainian food before and he was simply blown away. Well, I am now obsessed with Ukranian food after eating at the spectacular Golden Boar this week. It is so delectable that I don't even know where to begin. We started with several appetziers, including the "health" salad, the veggie gallette, and the cabbage pierogis. The salad was a mix of greens, toasted pumpkin seeds, beets, carrots, apples and a mustard-based dressing. The flavors all blended together perfectly and all of the ingredients were extremely fresh and crunchy. The veggie galette was a melt-in-your-mouth multi layered puff pastry topped with grilled veggies and a cheesy, creamy mild sauce that was scrumptious. The pierogis were delicate and delicious, topped with fried onions and sour cream. The skin was not too thick and not too thin, the perfect Goldilocks balance. For our main entrees I had the beef goulash and my friend went with another veggie app because she's vegetarian. She got the Adjika grilled eggplant. The beef goulash portion was enough for about four to five people. It had to be over a pound of giant chunks of super tender beef flavored with dill and tomato along with other seasonings and herbs. Little tender and chewy potato dumplings rounded out the dish. We also tried two desserts: a fruity cake and a cherry cheesecake type of dessert. Both were very good. The service was attentive, friendly, and helpful. The ambiance is gorgeous, dark and cozy. The entire experience was delicious and oh so delightful.
