Black Orchid is still one of my favorite places in the city. They were careful and courteous throughout COVID and I'm appreciative of the work they put in to keep clients safe and looking sharp during the pandemic. They relocated their downtown location to Mass Ave and if you haven't been to the new space yet you've got to swing by. It's open and airy, full of life and plants, and really focused on being a barbershop instead of a barbershop that happens to be tucked into the back of the salon. I came in for a cut with clay and asked for half an inch off the top at most. Asked for a mid taper/two-block, with some texture on top. He ended up taking off around 2.5-3 inches off the top and didn't even let me see the progress of the cut until it was too late. He also gave me a completely different cut than the pictures I showed him. Not coming back again. read more

I usually don't schedule haircuts, which means my hair gets long to the point where I snap into a "hairmergency" and decide I need a haircut, like, stat! Enter Black Orchid Barbers - they are open late and I've always been able to find an open slot to get my haircut within 24hrs. My lack of planning means I've taken whichever barber is available, and all 4 that have cut my hair have been great. I guess I would describe the atmosphere as hipster-metal. The place looks great, music is good, the conversations are sometimes a bit over the top, but that's all free entertainment. A couple times I've been in there were Playboy magazines on the coffee table... minus one star. I'm not sure what the intent was there. read more

I've been going to Cody at the Mass Ave. location and he is phenomenal. This location seats 3 people at a time, and all the barbers are very precise and efficient. Was able to make a same week appointment which was great for me because I forgot to schedule one before the holidays! Arrived and love the space, good vibes. Tanya greeted me about ten minutes after arrival and told me she'd be with me soon. Once in the chair I told her I needed as short of a fade as possible and that I trusted her. She spun me around and didn't ask any additional questions. I always get a little nervous when you can't see until the end, but I trust the process. She spun me around and just showed me how to style it. Never asked what I thought or anything. The sides were far bushier then I like, It looked like I was still due for a haircut. So I asked how I styled it to fix this and she said we would have to go shorter. I told her, let's do it! We only went shorter on one side and how she styled my hair my entire head looks lopsided. With taking it shorter there's a portion that's shorter than the rest (can be seen in the photos) and the other side still has a hard line. It's not really a "fade" if you can see the line still. For being one of the more experienced (meaning cost more) stylist I'm shocked with how I left and the lack to check if I liked it. I spent some time trying to restyle it in another mirror and was able to fix the unevenness with styling, but can't fix the cut. Guess I'll be wearing a hat for holiday photos read more

Do not get a straight shave from them. She left me bleeding with terrible razor burn. I don't think she knew what she was doing and that's not comforting when someone has a sharp blade near your neck. They need to train their employees better and teach them how to keep blades sharp and prep skin prior to a straight shave. Cool place with bad cuts and trims. I'm a frequent traveler who is always on the lookout for a solid barber shop. Booking can be done online and Ive never had a problem with the shop keeping them. Everybody Ive met or talked to has been really friendly. Conversations are usually a blast, and they'll probably offer you a beer or something while they're at it. I've had my hair cut a few times by Tanner and would definitely recommend him. Fades have always been great, and no problem making sure you walk out with the cut you want. read more

The environment is relaxing and very hip with records playing and a complimentary local beer for adult customers. Not knowing much about hair styles or what wxactly you want isn't a problem either. I have never gotten a better haircut. They take appointments, they're open late, and the staff is extremely friendly. The price of a beard trim and haircut is 45 bucks, which is kinda steep for me, but after I got done I understood why. The quality is absolutely incredible. Then last year at the Yelp event Drew approached me and told me a bit about Black Orchid and I was like "well why not". Went in for a haircut and never looked back. Made an appointment with a barber did a great job cutting my hair previously but got pawned off to another barber. I specifically made a appointment to avoid this and should have left. But I needed a cut so I stayed. Jason cut my hair and I was not happy at all. Sadly I will not return due to this. Cool place with some talented barbers. read more
