I just finished up with my 4th or 5th haircut at Jack's Barbershop and I can say that this is one of my favorite places to get a haircut in the Circle City. Why? - flexibility. Brenda and the barbers get that we all have busy schedules, so they allow you to come in right as they're closing and will whip you up a great haircut...and won't be rude or rushing about it. - come in whenever. That's right - come in during their business hours and there is almost always a barber there to get you taken care of in a few minutes. I usually stick with Brenda and she's totally a-okay with setting up an appointment in advance too. - relaxed atmosphere. There's just something about some of the barber shops around town where I just feel like I don't fit it and it makes the whole experience uncomfortable. Brenda makes sure you're having a good time, you let loose, and you get a great haircut. - free mid-month neck shaves. I'll admit - I grow body hair like no one's business. Luckily, they do free neck trims and shaves in between your cuts so you don't have to worry about doing it yourself. - nice location. For those that live and work and are in downtown a lot, the location is perfect for walking/biking as it's located inside City Market. - price. $20 + tip = a great price for a great cut that lasts longer than many. Aside from one small hiccup I had with one of the barbers, I have had nothing short of five-star experiences. Be sure to come in on a time when Miko (Brenda's Shiba Inu) is in the shop to have a cute furry friend to keep you company while you wait. I liked this place, it is hidden in the back of City Market and I only knew about it through a friend. It is one of the cheaper haircuts in the city for men, and it is great for the price. Stopped in this afternoon for my third haircut, once again, amazed. I've had it cut by different people each time and it's still the same quality and service. My favorite quality about going here is that I've never had to wait and today there was even a puppy to greet me when I came in. Sure enough, Kim sat me right away and took his time, which is something I find rare anytime I get my haircut elsewhere. How fate brought me to Jack's Barbershop is a miracle! I absolutely love visiting the girls at Jack's! Each one of them has their own special and charming personality that complements each other so well to create such a welcoming and entertaining experience! My girl, Aksana, just understands my distinct hairstyle! Together, we always attempt different hairstyles until we discover the right one that uniquely works for me! Only when we find that perfect style will we host a mini-photoshoot to showcase her astounding masterpiece! My partner absolutely adores Faith and all her precision and advice on maintaining his beard! After his recent ear surgery, Faith was extra conscious about his pain and still provided excellent service that exceeded his meticulous standards! Of course, no review for Jack's would be complete without acknowledging Brenda. She is definitely one of those rare and beautiful individuals who's genuine laughter and smile are so infectious that they that would brighten anyone's day! Jack's was excellent, I walked in without a reservation, and even though they were relatively busy they were able to fit me in. They were very friendly, it was a great atmosphere, and they had a little cute Shiba Inu in the sleeping in her bed in the corner. I got exactly what I wanted and more, it was $20, which is more than I am used to paying, but I think that's normal in Indianapolis so I won't deduct a star for it. I definitely recommend them, if I need a barber in Indianapolis again I will definitely come back. read more

I thought my hair was getting a bit unmanageable, and being new in town, I don't know of any local barber shops or hair stylists. Thankfully there is Yelp, and for a long time it has only helped me find places to stuff my face. Today though, it helped me find this little gem of a place. All the great reviews are well deserved. Jack's is a small shop on the 2nd floor of the City Market. Keep looking, because it's there, if a bit difficult to find. It's a cozy place with an old-style barber shop feel to it. Once you set foot inside you'll be cheerfully greeted by Brenda. She was a joy to interact with, filled with great stories and tips. While Brenda was busy with another customer, in walks Kelly, another piece of joy that filled the place. She was the one that took me into the chair and took her scissors to my head. Kelly asked me what I wanted, and was able to very easily grasp the look I was going for. She was attentive, and very careful, making sure to clear any big steps with me before taking them. She took her time and took note of the little things about my hair, and adjusted her strategy to suit me. It all lead to a great haircut and an experience that is second to none. Not only was it great to finally get my haircut the way I liked, but it was wonderful to make a few new friends. I don't think I've ever had a cut this enjoyable, so Jack's Barbershop is definitely a place I'll be coming back to again and again. read more

There are a few dozen reasons to love this place. Tried in vain to boil it down to the top three, but they don't do it justice. One caveat -- only Brenda has cut my hair. While George and Suela add to the charm of the place, no personal experience re: their cut quality. That aside, here it goes: Despite being quick and cheap ($15, $20 with tip!), the haircuts are still high-quality. Want to stress this point: unless you're getting a shave, you'll never spend more than 15 minutes in her chair. Expect to walk out surprised at how quickly she gets to a good result -- it's easily the best cut I've found in Indy. One note: this isn't a "hair salon" and these aren't "hair stylists." The barbers are quick to point out the distinction: heard one hapless sap refer to Brenda as such receive a quick (but friendly!) correction. If your hair takes 30 minutes each morning and is loaded with product, probably not the place for you. The atmosphere is a throwback to your grandfather's barbershop (a la Red's) and feels less polished but more authentic as a result -- a community barbershop where everyone knows everyone and people are roasting each other & swapping gossip constantly. An endearing quality, and for the more asocial types Brenda will turn it down a few notches (which admittedly is still quite a few notches above most other barbers you'll meet). Everyone here is a character and has a ton of personality, they'll remember you and you won't be able to forget them. Brenda has a seemingly-loose steel trap of a mind -- despite probably cutting (or shaving) hundreds of heads per month, she'll still remember JUST the way you like it cut and pick up a few personal details on each trip in. It's locally owned (by Brenda) and everyone is a big proponent of "shop locally", you can't leave here without a recommendation to a try new vendor in City Market or info about everything from Yelp's Bazaar to an effin' square potluck. If you haven't tried it yet, make the switch at some point. Once -- and only once -- I "cheated" (her phrase) and tried Red's when Brenda was completely booked. Paid more and walked out less satisfied -- so much so that I stopped in at Jack's the next day. read more

This is a classic barbershop experience, tucked away inside the city market. She knew my name when I walked in the door, and seemed to know what I wanted before I did.
