Fantastic experience kayaking through cypress trees with these guys. Our guide Matt was amazing. Got everyone set up and out on the river quickly and efficiently, shared his knowledge of the river and wildlife just enough without interfering with the trip, and kept an eagle eye on the weather. Great experience!

Had a wonderful marsh kayak trip. The guide was both knowledgeable and passionate. Almost immediately we saw an eagle. Throughout the excursion we saw osprey, herons (white, blue, and green) sparrows, egrets, and many more. He picked the perfect tide giving my the option to paddle as hard or as easy as I chose. I look forward to booking again soon!

Had an OK experience here in early October 2019. There is potential, but I found that the tour guides didn't keep the tour moving appropriately for the weather. It was super sunny and very hot and there were points where we were sitting stagnant in our kayaks for far too long listening to the guide talk about the area when we were all uncomfortably roasting. By the end, my husband and I just kayaked back to the beach instead of staying with the group when the beach was finally back in sight just to get out of the hot, hot sun. I have a feeling if they kept us moving or prioritized finding shade for the long winded parts of the tour when we stood still, we would have really enjoyed the tour. I'm not saying they can predict the weather but I am saying they should manage their movement better when appropriate. Before the uncomfortableness or the heat set in I did enjoy my time here. The tour guides seemed knowledgeable and friendly. Lots of back and forth Q&A. Bring your sunscreen - if you catch a day like we did and are fair skinned you'll need to reapply a ton over the few hours you're out there - more than I generally need to apply to keep from burning.

    Paddling on the mighty Waccamaw

We love using Black River Outfitters. This is our second kayak trip with them, and we will be booking our third very soon. BRO communicates very well, directions are clear and concise. All of they equipment clean and great to use. They best thing about BRO's are their guides. We had Mike this trip. Mike is a local and is one of the most knowledgeable people I have spoken with in the 3 years we have lived here. He knows everything about everything. Nature, ecology, live on and off the river. We enjoyed having Mike as our guide.

    Salt water marsh tour

Richard and Frankie gave a great tour of the salt marsh. We learned a lot of new things. They were professional and I'd go again on another tour next time we visit.

Brown water snake that was caught and used for education for the festival that weekend. Paul later released her back into the marsh.

We have done both but honestly it's just easier to rent from them. They have several styles of boats depending on what you need (tandem, sit on top, sit inside, "big boy" boats). There's a nice shelter at the river house to rest under when you get back, bathroom, and even a camping area for groups that want to stay overnight. Coming prepared is important. Besides a bathing suit, it would be wise to have a long-sleeve shirt…read moreand hat (or a huge tub of sunscreen), some sort of water shoes, and some way of protecting your devices. I got a watertight bag for my phone. They say they'll store your keys, but they didn't remind me and in my haste to hit the water I somehow floated the entire distance with my super expensive electronic car key in my pocket, which neither fell out nor was any the worse for wear, miraculously. You have to pay to get into the state park where this endeavor begins, which in total brings the cost to around $40 a head or so. Which for me was not bad given the experience. I received help getting the tube down to the water and they had some watercraft at the end to gently bump me to shore. They say floating down the river takes two hours; it doesn't seem that long a distance but it is a slow-moving river and my trip took around two and a half hours in the water. Obviously, you can slow yourself down or speed yourself up. The shores of the river were verdant, with frequent houses and docks and a lot of signs saying to stay off of various people's private property (fair enough), but I still managed to find a bit of beach for a brief respite, and the trip ends at a sandbar. Various powered watercraft whizzed by, but they mostly just caused some pleasant waves. Conditions will vary, but I found the water immensely pleasant on a summer day, and on the water I didn't have a huge mosquito problem (I did apply repellent). The depth was such that during much of the trip I was actually floating and could not touch the bottom, but there were certainly places where you could. The inquiring mind wonders whether alligators, snakes, bull sharks, or some other river monster is hiding beneath the murky water, but I observed no such creatures (as a one-time Australian, there's no way I'd get into an Australian river where I couldn't see what was around me). The bottom was mostly sandy, but did occasionally have branches and things, and water shoes do help. I underestimated how much time my legs would spend out of the water and did not apply sunscreen to them; I wish I'd either done that or just carried sunscreen in some container. The end area had brightly colored trip employees to shepherd you in using watercraft, as well as a volleyball net and picnic area for those so inclined. A bus brings you in short order back to where you started. A trip through the surrounding countryside suggests a pastoral, relatively natural environment, and driving through it I always wished there were more tourist opportunities to experience this unique landscape and dodge the heat. Turns out, this is the place.

I did my research ahead of time and knew they were what I was looking for. I wanted a sunrise kayak by experienced people who will not sell me gimmick and promises, just straight up the service I want and preferably a private tour. This last bit, of course, seemed impossible so I would have been willing to settle for non-private until I found their services! Yes, private. As small as 2 people in a tour. For us, it was only my husband and I. Shawn and Toni Rae are fantastic people. I booked ahead of time but was told since I wanted an open ocean kayak, the day could change based on tide conditions which is totally understandable for everyone's safety. Fortunately for us, the whole week was open since we were intending to catch the sunrise and there's nothing to do at 5am anyway. The day of, we drove over to their address, signed waivers, left our things for safe keeping at their house and headed to the beach. After getting our kayaks situated and safety instructions were given, including how to enter and exit the ocean safely, we were off. While we've done kayaking plenty of times on lakes, we've only ever done open ocean kayaking once before this time. Yes, it is more difficult and you do need to follow the instructions so you don't hurt yourself or flip your kayak. Shawn and Toni Rae were very helpful and clear with their instructions. He was also close by to make sure my husband and I got on and passed the waves and paddled safely away from the beach. We waited about 15 minutes before sunrise and he took a bunch of beautiful photos and sent them to us. No additional fees for the photos! After the photos, we headed back to shore and successfully made it back safely. The biggest take away from the experience though was that, it was truly exhilarating. We've both been kayaking on the Pacific ocean before by ourselves but I don't think we would have been brave enough to do it in the dark, before daylight. This experience was truly one of a kind and we had the best time!
