Passing through Whitehouse Station and in search of coffee brought me to Black River Roasters, and it definitely was a pleasant surprise! First impressions: wow, this place is huge for a coffee shop. Black River roasts their own coffee beans in house, which is always nice and means you're getting some high quality caffeine. Seasonal flavors included pumpkin, bourbon maple, and apple cinnamon -- so you already know you're getting quality, since these aren't flavors you can get just anywhere. I loved the signage depicting staff favorite drink mixes as it adds a fun touch to the menu! Coffee was great, my only complaint is that with syrups the drink can get way too sweet (especially since I typically drink unsweetened coffee.) Make sure to ask for less syrup and you'll be good to go! Can't wait to return!

Truly impressed! They do their own roasting in house so that's a plus. The barista made my PSL perfectly! I asked for it to be less sweet and decaf and it tasted GREAT! I wish all places could make PSL this good! I got a Morning Glory muffin which I've never heard of but she told me it gave carrot cake vibes and she couldn't be more spot on! It was exactly that but with sultanas. I'm not a fan of those so I dug them out. It was still good nonetheless. There was a lot of counter seating on the first floor, the lounge on the upper floor, and cute decorations all over!

I visit BRR about once a week and it's always a pleasant experience. Upon entering, there's a chalkboard of drinks to choose from if you're like me and have anxiety trying to figure out what the heck to order at a shop. With fun names like Cookie Monster, Veruca Salt, etc. there's plenty to choose from, and they can all be customized. Their coffee base is excellent, and I've never had a drink I didn't like. There's also a lounge area on the second level with seating options if you feel like enjoying your drink at the shop. Even when it's busy, the service is usually quite speedy, so BRR is also a great pick for to-go options.

I have a lot of worries these days and have found that doing simple things like making coffee and listening to lo-fi helps me settle down in the morning. I have a great Stanley pourover set I got for my camping trips that I also like to use at home. The patience of boiling water and then doing the pour over a few times is the calmest 15-20 minutes of my day. Lately I've really enjoyed grinding my own beans so when I ran out of some I had gotten on a recent trip, I went in search of the best beans in NJ. Black River came up near my area and I was really psyched by their online selection. I ended up getting a bag from Papua New Guinea that has toffee, nut, and cherry notes. I've decided I like it best with some ground cardamom as well. Just shy of $20 for the bag. Money well spent as far as I'm concerned. I wasn't in the shop long but felt comfortable perusing the variety. Some of their made-to-order drinks looked really good. Maybe next time!

Great local coffee place with no frills with selection of crafts drinks and teas. It's right on Rt 22 with private parking lot. They have an area upstairs to sit, relax and enjoy your coffee. Coffee is a bit light for my liking but it still worth it.

On my last visit here I got a tumeric latte and very tasty biscotte. Both were delicious and the perfect mid day treat I needed after way too much coffee that morning. I also got an herbal tea after while I was just getting some work done and needed to stay warm. The place is new to the Whitehouse scene and very welcomed. They are great for grabbing on the go, but they also have a very cozy lounge that is perfect for getting work done (strong wifi) or sitting and relaxing on your own or with a friend. The baristas working were very kind and if you're sitting and enjoying there, they'll bring your order right to ya. Happy to have found this spot and excited to try more of their menu!

I have been wanting to come here for quite a bit after seeing someone I follow post about them on Instagram. The inside is really nice and they have this lounge area to sit down. I felt that the coffee was underwhelming however. I got a large latte with oat milk which tasted good however the small latte with almond milk did not taste like a latte. It was super foamy and the espresso was weak. We bought a bag of beans and that was good. Nothing to complain and recommended.

omg this coffee is crazy affordable and LEGIT. The people that work here are such good vibes. There is a lounge as well if you wanted to get work done. I need to add that the music on this particular day was sooooo perfect and what I would play in my coffee shop on a rainy day (men I trust :) beach house, cigarettes after sex) I don't have much else to say because the coffee is really good and not overpriced so that says it all. I've been here a few times now and give them high praises for the great selection of fresh roasted coffee and styled they have. I have become a fan of their pour over, it takes a little longer to prepare, worth the wait!! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I stumbled upon this place on social media so I was excited to stop here over the weekend before heading over to Round Valley. As soon as we walked in, I was drawn to all the displays of coffee, cold beverages, and pastries. They had a lot of unique products I hadn't seen or heard of before, and I wanted one of everything. I ordered a cold brew and my boyfriend was going to order a pour over, but the staff let us know that there were two pour over orders ahead of us and it would be about a 10 minute wait. Make that two cold brews, then! Because I couldn't help myself, I also ordered a gluten free almond apricot scone. Holy deliciousness! Most gluten free scones I've had were bone dry and flavorless, but this one was packed with that delicious traditional scone flavor, and the apricots added a nice sweetness. I'd love to get my hands on the recipe! Other highlights were the friendly staff, the music choice, and the awesome little dueling tip jars they had by the register. That day, it was SpongeBob or Patrick. I paid with a card and ended up giving an electronic tip, but for the record, I totally would have gone with Patrick. We didn't have a chance to hang out and check out the seating area in the back, but we'll definitely be visiting again to try that pour over and probably pick up some coffee for home brewing as well. read more

My first visit I must have been star struck and awed by the cool crowd. Had a nice smooth latte. Waited a long time for it. Second time my husband nailed the taste of it...dirt. Was lukewarm at best. His decaf was like chock full of nuts. Oh well. I'll take the dunkin donuts. It's cheaper. read more

Possibly my favorite business in town. As a coffee lover (read: snob), I've had a really hard time finding excellent coffee. Black River not only roasts their own delicious coffee, much of it organic, but creates just the best drinks. The cappuccino here is right out of some hole-in-the-wall bar on a street corner in Italy, which is the highest compliment I can give to a coffee drink. You won't find the overly-syrupy, behemoth drinks with made-up names here; just really great, traditional drinks prepared with care from very high quality coffee. You can also grab a pastry and some coffee beans to take home. If you're not into coffee, they made a hot chocolate for my son that was probably the best hot chocolate I've ever tasted. I don't usually have time to stick around, but the lounge area is bright and comfy, with free wifi so you can get your work done Every employee I've dealt with has been friendly and helpful, and seems genuinely happy to answer any questions. Plus the dueling tip jars are great entertainment. read more

Was waiting for a friend before ordering anything so I sat in their "cafe seating". Whom I assume to be a manager came over to me and declared I had to order something or I had to leave. The coffee is very good and they have a very wide variety. My stomach prefers the low acidity blend and I don't know of too many places who offer that. Their pastries and ham and cheese croissants are excellent (a brownie to die for!) The staff is always very friendly, so......nothing bad to report. read more

By far the best coffee shop in the area with very reasonable prices for the level of quality they offer. The baristas are very knowledgeable and I've never been served anything that wasn't excellent. No subpar or disappointing cappuccinos here and the beans are always very fresh. The area upstairs has a variety of seating options and gets a nice morning light but it can get a bit busy and loud at times. read more

This was a great coffee shop on our way from NY. I am a coffee snob and prefer great tasting unique coffees. Black River Roasters delivered. I tried one of their Honduras single Origin roasts and it was very unique and excellent as well. A definite regular stop when we travel through NJ, and I will buy their coffee online. read more

This is one of my favorite coffee shops around! I love that they stick to the basics with their coffee menu and don't try to get to fancy. I also regularly purchase my beans from them for my home use and haven't had a bag that I didn't like. Once you've had fresh-roasted coffee, you'll never go back to Starbucks or DD crap. They roast all their coffee on premiss! Because the coffee is fresh, you can actually taste the natural flavors and don't need syrups or sugar as with the chains that serve stale coffee. Baristas are super-nice and go out of their way to help you. Excellent atmosphere to hang back and relax. read more

Went to the open house on September 25th with my family, and was very impressed!! The cold brew I had was smooth and tasty. I had the mixed berry scone, which was delicious. I really like this place! I have actually made the routine of going here with a couple friends and look forward to it every time. The lounge area is filled with awesome music related memorabilia, and there are a bunch of cool vintage coffee cans that I could look at for hours. The coffee blows everything else out of the water. They use state of the art equipment for their espresso and have really friendly employees. What else do you need? read more

We have been loving there coffee for over 6 years now. Even on our vacations we bring it. The day doesn't seem right if I don't start the day without a cup in our hands in the early morning. Very smooth and deep flavor on all of the blends. Stopped by today with tons of questions and had them all happily answered by Danielle. Girls behind the bar where very nice too. The Colombian coffee was delicious and I enjoyed my espresso as well. Employees cursing with customers waiting for coffee is horrible. Also the fact the young ignorant millennial employees also insulting people based on what sunglasses they wear is disrespectful. Delicious coffee, and great place. You can't miss it with their big "COFFEE" sign outside the building. It has a cool vibe and great place to meet with a friend. Plenty of seating, and they roast the beans on site. Awesome just to look at the giant roasters. read more

Awesome proprietary coffee shop and nice alternative to Starbucks. I ordered an iced mocha; it was great. They have a nice sitting area on the second level where you can relax and avail yourself of their free WiFi. Local musicians sometimes play. read more
