We ate here today on a Sunday! They only serve Brunch on Sunday. We thought they served Lunch . But we made the best of it! I ordered French Toast with Smoked Bacon and Fried potatoes. It was disappointing . The bacon could have been cooked more and the French toast looked and tasted like it was packaged and the fried potatoes were tasteless . My husband ordered a burger and it looked good but he said it didn't have a good burger taste the fries were interesting large gut curled potatoes but I wouldn't call them fries . The others had chicken strips that had been cooked so long the chicken just about disappeared inside and you couldn't even chew them . A club sandwich was just ok. Service was ok but it took quite awhile for the food to come and it was not busy only a few tables. I can see why ! We won't be back ! Everything sounded good just wasn't . The place was very nice inside would be a nice place to have a cold beer and sit outside in the summer ! I believe there was a golf course there and they do have weddings and events there. If I could rate the overall experience any lower, I wouldn't hesitate. From someone who is like-minded and understands the struggle of a short staffed industry - Dayna, an announced manager later mentioned "fill in" could not have been any more disrespectful in responding to a large party. A large party who waited, kindly, 2+ hours in between beverages, was shoo-ed away (by her) at the bar in the hour of follow up being told we simply won't be served - not to mention the party that had to serve their own food as the drinks were being waited on. Grabbing nearby towels to accommodate the 30 person party of (already paid for) catered food in hot pans. The rudeness supersedes the under-staffed, over-charged celebration. Please think twice about trusting this establishment with your low-bar expectations. read more

It appears that I'm not the only one who was treated rudely by Dayna. I went up to the bar for some help when a server failed to visit my table after 30+ minutes. She was incredibly disrespectful to me and rudely raised her voice to me saying, "We are on a wait!!!"...which had nothing to do with the lack of a server for the table at which I was seated. I never saw the person who seated me after she left the table. Dayna was so rude in her tone, words, and body language, that the couple seated at the bar next to me looked at me in disbelief. Dayna did not offer to help, did not offer to send someone over...nothing. There was no host or hostess. I could not locate a manager. I saw two servers walking around in a daze and others seated around me looking for someone to visit their table. It was a beautiful afternoon/evening. I was really looking forward to a few drinks and dinner here after the rest of my party had finished golfing. I dine out several times a week and I don't think anyone has ever come close to treating me so rudely. I will NEVER return. Someone like Dayna should not be in the service industry. Her attitude/general demeanor is unacceptable, at best. This is a nice place to golf; it's not cheap. Why would such a nice place employ someone like this? read more

The service was very lacking. Minimal, if that. We got the Brussel sprouts, as an app. They were burnt. I usually actually prefer them burnt, but these just tasted like scorched oil. Not really a food kind of flavor. I ordered my salad as a meal. I said for it to come with the rest of the entrees, because well. That's all I got as my entree. It was still brought early. The amount you pay for the 3 small shrimp on said salad was disappointing and angering. My husband got a burger with mushrooms. The burger was so dry. Overall, it was cold. The mushrooms had an extra slimy consistency. The bun was hard and oily. My sister got the fish and chips. She did like her dish, but it seemed a bit cheap for the cost. We had to get another server to refill our drinks, because we seem to have lost our waitress. This was. Big letdown. read more

Carry out from here can be hit and miss. We got some great food from here but more recently our pizza was burnt and they sent the wrong order when we picked it up. Definitely check your food before getting home. Management did not remedy the burnt pizza. read more

I normally love this place - many of the dishes are easy to devotion as a FAV; the Steak & Frites are amazing and that House ranch is off the chain! Wonderful lobster bisque with ample amounts of lobster. This place is also way overlooked as a wonderful brunch choice (Try ANYTHING with the Chorizo Gravy). My biggest issues are that it seems understaffed and poorly managed. You can oversee many confused sidebars of hostesses, servers and staff trying to brainstorm an issue. Last visit we sat forever before being offered to order drinks then again before ordering our meal. Then once the meal arrived, which wasn't a long wait at all - the order was the wrong item. We each ordered the Brunch Burrito (Because "Chorizo" Gravy), well we both got the garden veritable burrito instead. When you expect a hearty, meaty & cheesy breakfast burrito with spicy chorizo, it's a let down to get a no meat substitution without the Gravy you were craving. The only restitution was simply "sorry". I would imagine a take charge dining room leader would really fix many of the customer service and experience issues this place has. read more

Decided to stop by for a beer and cocktail and was delighted to see that there was live music. That's about where the positive experience ended. Husbands drink wasn't made correctly and while Dana offered to make another, which my husband declined, she came across very rude stating he ordered it wrong. Even if that were true, which it wasn't, who says that to a customer? We ordered the Brussel Sprouts remembering how good they were from a prior experience and when they finally came out 45 minutes later, although cooked perfectly crisp tender, had little to no taste. We did overhear that the system was not putting in orders correctly but again the bartender was very short. While we were waiting, there were two other couples that we saw expressing their displeasure at the bartender and both ended up leaving. We should have done the same. We enjoy stopping here as it is close to home, but the lack of good customer service, and attitude will definitely make us think twice. It could be the bartender was having an off day. But if not, she's just super unpleasant and condescending. read more

OMG!!! We were visiting from Pittsburgh and found this place from Yelp! Let me just say the food was FANTASTIC!!! The food was great and the service was AMAZING! Melissa was so helpful with local eats and ideas for leisure, we couldn't have had more of an acceptable experience!!! She was SO friendly and inviting! So disappointing!!! Arrived for a birthday dinner for our father. My sister and her husband had been to Black River previously, and said it would be a nice evening. Our mother had made a reservation, and upon arriving the hostess informed us that there was no reservation. When my mother assured her that she had made one, the hostess spun her laptop around in a snippy condescending way. The group before us also said they had made a reservation and were treated in a similar fashion! We were reluctantly seated and waited 1/2 hour before we were able to flag down the same hostess for water. She, again, seemed very put out. Our group made the decision to leave. Disappointing as the tavern seemed nice and the food looked good. "Attitude is Everything", especially in food service! I will say the young woman that seated us was polite, and the man that brought out our water couldn't have been nicer. read more

My wife and I have been coming here for years and to be honest it's always a little hit or miss with food and service. Lately, it's seemed to miss more which has inspired this review. As a local I'm always rooting for the hometown restaurants, but I can't justify spending top dollar for a meal when I can go right down the street to the Foundry and get a better meal for less. This review isn't actually based on the food, because we never got it. Our reservation was for 6:30, we sat down promptly and waited 15 mins until someone showed up and took our drink order. At the 30 minute mark we were still waiting. The waitress was nice, no issue with her, was as frustrated as we were. Finally, at the 45 minute mark we just left. I have eaten here before and the food was good, not sure if I'll go back. It definitely won't be on a Weekend night if I do. read more

I just received my order from door Dash and I am very disappointed. My perch was horrible. I ordered two perch dinners and they are both burnt. I ordered cookies they are also burnt. I didn't receive any tartar sauce and I didn't receive any coleslaw. Will never order from here again. read more

Dined there for a late dinner with my partner. I hadn't heard of this place before so I was curious to check it out. The atmosphere was nice. The tables are made out of real wood which was super neat to see. Our server was friendly and attentive. We really enjoyed all of our food! I loved the ranch dressing! The ONLY downside I would comment on is the fact that the music playing from the kitchen was loud enough to be able to hear it very clearly from our table and it was just as loud as the music playing overhead so that was kind of annoying and distracting. We didn't mind either type of music (one was rap and the other was more radio/popular hits) but we just didn't enjoy listening to them both playing at the same time over each other. However, we did have a later dinner as I said (arrived around 7:40 and they close at 9) so I understand to an extent that as things wind down, the kitchen might just turn up their music as they're winding down for the night. If we visited again, I think we'd make sure to come earlier so we don't run into that again. Overall, we were happy with our food and service. We will most likely visit again in the future and I would recommend to a friend! read more

Am sitting with a party of six at Black River Tavern in Elyria. Three of us ordered chicken parm. We were served CHICKEN TENDERS (!) with no marinara and no cheese! DON'T ORDER THE CHICKEN PARM!!!! We were on our way home from Newport RI and stayed at a local hotel that recommended a Texas Roadhouse as a good place to eat nearby. When we went to check into that restaurant we waited over a 1/2 hour in line only to be told the wait to be seated was 1-1/2 to 2 hours. We've eaten in TR before and none are worth that wait. Instead we found The Black River Tavern which is in a local Golf Club. We had a great meal there, no wait. We have the Fish and Chips and Chicken Parmesan along with two Black Walnut Manhattans. Consistency seems to be an issue here. The hostess has been less than friendly on our last two visits; she's rather curt. The maple brussel sprouts were drenched in syrup this time. Last time they were crispy and great. The new description of the pork chop in the menu is rather unappetizing. Last time it was grilled to perfection and delicious, this time a LOT of excess fat and presentation not good. Plenty of extra tables but most have dirty dishes covering them. The restaurant itself has a great setting and high end decor. The wood tables, fireplace and bar are beautiful! I understand that wait staff is hard to find these days, but please" train the ones you have"!!! We were seated on Saturday night at 6:00 pm. After our friends arrived at 6:15 pm. We were given our menus and the waited for 20 minutes for a server. Then another 30 minutes to get served our drinks. We gave her our order at that time and never saw her again until our food came almost an hour later. Our friend ordered another round of drinks and they came back wrong. How hard is it to get a second round of the same drinks? The bartender apparently was not concerned, since she went on break before fixing our order!!! I ordered the Chicken Mac & Cheese which looked nothing like the pictures. It was overly sticky and cheesy on penne pasta and the chicken "tenders" were so dark and hard they were like balls of coal. Our first friend order the Chicken Parm. They just sat two pieces of the same overdone chicken on top of the pasta I had also ordered a half salad. Everyone received theirs, but mine was not brought to the table until after my meal arrived. That is when I finally had the opportunity to let her know I hadn't received it. When I mentioned that the bread was so hard none of us could bite into it... she said "Oh, that's how it's suppose to be". NO, Olivia, that is not how it is suppose to be. The third person in our group had the shrimp and pasta," tasteless would be the best description of this dish". (Not my words, his). The fourth had a hamburger and fries, which was the only decent meal. "Not memorable, but ok." (Also not my words, hers). Worse than the food was the fact that no plates or glassware were removed from our table. We lifted our salad bowls to make room for our diner plates and the waitress started to walk away. I had to say "excuse me, can you please take these plates?" After our meal every plate and glass was still on the table 30 minutes later as we waited for someone...anyone to return. When she finally returned, there was no request to see if we wanted coffee or desert, she just brought our check. We didn't get out of the restaurant until 9:10 pm. 3 hours after our reservation and that's with no desert or coffee. Of all the reviews I've ever written over the years, there have been maybe 2 this bad. Once in a while you get a mediocre meal or an inexperienced waitress, that's to be expected, but it was difficult to find anything good about this experience. We were not rude and although in my opinion it was undeserved and not our usual 20-25 %, we left a tip. None of us will ever go back. I'm not sure how anyone who has ever eaten really good pub or tavern food or has had a wait staff that actually cares, could possibly give this a 4 or 5 star review. read more

The food here is really well thought out and executed! That's the bottom line, but the rest of the story is just as good. This tavern in the basement of the old Spring Valley country club (and current home of the Valley of the Eagles golf course) has a competent chef that has designed a delightful menu and trained his kitchen to make quality courses. My wife had the classic burger, prepared medium, and the truffle fries. I had the cheesesteak and truffle fries. Burger cooked exactly as ordered and the truffle fries were unbelievable. I didn't need sauce, but ranch and ketchup were supplied with them. The sauce on the cheesesteak was incredibly creamy and the sandwich was perfect. Kayla was our server. She did a great job, giving us a history of the building, the sustainability of the straws (made from corn and biodegradable), and the credentials of the chef. For dessert we shared the triple chocolate cake, with layers of cake, peanut and fudge. We didn't even try to finish it, but it was great. I almost forgot to comment on the decor, which is equally appealing. The old brick arches served as stable entryways when the building was first constructed. The tables are clean strutted from old pine trees felled from the golf course, and wood accents all aspects of the establishment. It's a joy and I hope you'll give it a try.
