The bar and patio were packed for a Thursday night, we grabbed the last 2 seats available at the inside bar and were blown away by the service and menu. The bartender was amazing, so nice and full of tidbits offering suggestions and friendly chitchat. My husband and I both ordered pasta dishes, me the shrimp scampi and he ordered the sausage kale cavatelli. I know don't order pasta at a bar, but it was amazing. Fresh ingredients with local Ohio City Pasta , super fresh and flavorful. The bar offered great summer drinks, heavy pours of wine and seasonal beer and not to be outdone Bar Nova offers cardboard crack, otherwise known as instant bingo! SCORE all around. Stopped in for happy hour and it was a perfect patio day! Our server Ally was awesome! Super personable & efficient! The fresh fried mozzarella amazing as are the flatbread pizzas! The flatbreads are round like a reg pizza and a nice size with a crisp crust. We had the wild mushroom which is my absolute favorite and we also had the house made meatball/ricotta. Both were delicious! The buffalo deviled eggs taste as you'd expect. They were good, but I think I'd rather have buffalo wings over the deviled eggs. After hearing so many good things about this place, I was finally able to go. We got there about an hour after they opened and luckily it wasn't packed. Found this place on Yelp and was really looking forward to trying the Walleye tacos. I must admit they were a bit disappointing. The slaw was delicious but overload the taco in volume and flavor. There was a small fried roll-shaped piece of walleye at the bottom but I honestly couldn't tell you what the walleye itself tasted like. The mushroom flatbread with balsamic glaze was the complete opposite! It was a round flatbread, which was surprising but that could be usual for the area. It was very generously topped with so many delicious mushrooms! The restaurant area couldn't accommodate a party of two so we sat in the bar. It's an attractive space with a large stone fireplace and tables as well as bar seats. The service was friendly, quick and accommodating. There were three large screen TVs with sports on each one and a good size crowd for a Wednesday night, but we had no trouble having a normal volume conversation. They do not take reservations on the weekend so we had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. The place is small inside with tables pretty close together. There's really no where to wait for a table except to stand in the middle between the entrance, bar, seating area, door to the seating area, and the fireplace; you essentially get into everyone's way (customers, employees). There is not a good process / system in place for those who have to wait -- the hostess takes your name, number of people, and estimated wait time. You cannot reserve seating either, supposedly. I don't want to harp on this too much since it was a cold night and I'm sure things would be different during warm weather (e.g., wait outside, be able to get on the patio). Food / Drink: I got the American Burger and Fries w/ BBQ sauce. The burger was delicious and had great flavor. The fries were delicious as well; very crispy. What I was disappointed by is that the fries are not with the meal, but rather $2 extra. Who wants chips with their burger? I also was disappointed with the Dr Pepper I had -- Not sure why, but the Dr Pepper tasted different; it was not good and didn't taste like the drink really at all. I don't know if it was watered down or what. Service: The service overall were really kind and helpful and it made a difference in the experience had there, despite the loudness and congestion endured. You would think that would annoy the employees, but it doesn't seem that way -- it shows they really care about their customers, and that's a good thing. Overall, I was satisfied with this place. My husband, daughter & I ate dinner here yesterday, because we wanted to eat outside somewhere nearby, and had never been here. They have a very cute space with a nice little patio. We should've known something wasn't right though when my husband's water had something floating in it. Our server was very nice, apologetic & replaced the water. Our server came to tell me twice that she's been asking the kitchen for my salad & didn't understand why it was taking so long & apologized. So it was not her fault. My daughter & I waited 20 min for our small salads. Hers was just a basic side salad. I had their arugula salad, which I added plain grilled chicken to. It was nothing special that should've taken extra time. There were very few tables occupied so they weren't super busy. My husband ordered one of their alleged "wood-fired" pizzas; however there's no way this was wood fired. It honestly looked like they shredded some fresh basil over a Chef Boyardee pizza, super thin dough, minimal sauce. Wood fired should have some crispness; this was soft & mushy, nothing special at all. My salad was so bland, I wanted to ask for salt & pepper but the server never came back to ask how the food was and I was starving at that point, so I just ate it. I did have a good amount of dressing - it just wasn't very flavorful. (I do not recommend the lemonade. My husband liked his old fashioned.) Our bill was over $100 (with tip) for a crappy meal. I was really disappointed this evening with how my friend and I were treated by staff at Bar Nova. We were catching up after having drinks and appetizers and paying our bill when a staff member, not our server, asked us to leave because they needed the table. We hadn't even been sitting for longer than 15 minutes finishing our conversation. No question or professional approach to see if we wanted to order a dessert or more drinks if we were going to stay longer, simply a rude "Ladies we need this table so you're going to have to leave." The kicker is that when we walked out and looked over at the patio, there were open tables!!! Apparently, if you want to linger catching up with a friend you haven't seen in a long time after you pay your check, you aren't welcome. Or I advise you drink and eat slowly and take a long time to pay your check at the very end of your conversation if you want to enjoy time with your friend. The salmon with Asian noodles is one of the best flavors of salmon we have ever had. My wife does not like mushrooms or peppers. The flavors and textures blended so nicely with the dish, she ate them both. The servers were pleasant and prompt and checked on us often. I had the wild mushroom flatbread. It was also very good. Also recommend the arugula and spinach salad.Get there early; reservations for six or more. Recommend sitting inside for temperatures above 84° on sunny early evenings as the sunsets it sneaks in below the umbrellas heating everything on the table. We called in & ordered pickup. We were told 30-40 minutes. Went to pick it up and an hour and a half later walked out without any food. They were busy but multiple to go orders were picked up in the duration we waited. If you forgot to put the order in- ok- just say so! Then tell the cooks to rush it! Bad way to run a business. When we asked for a refund, they refunded the food but not the $4 tip. It's not like we need the $4 - it's that they didn't do anything to deserve it. But at that point, we let it go and left.
