I was excited to try this place. We went in on a Saturday morning. There was no one inside, and we walked right up to the cash register. As we waited the employees were moving around, appearing to make orders for the drive thru (one standing looking at their phone). After 20 minutes we were questioning what was going on. Then the people who ordered after us went up to ask about their drinks. They got their drinks and we were left still waiting. We went to ask about ours and were quickly met with rude side eye glances from the workers behind the register. Once we asked for a refund our items magically appeared. No thank you, I'll take my refund and we will not be coming back. If you want to be a drive thru only place then close your inside and focus on drive thru. read more

I truly don't want you to think that I'm a Scrooge on a Christmas Eve. But my experience was outrageous that I have never been in my lifetime of yelping. My friend wanted to meet up for coffee but he didn't want to drive all the way to Chinatown. Okay, let's meet halfway. So, I found Black Rock Coffee Bar, among others like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts. Location was tucked away from Westheimer when I'm coming from south of Beltway. Parking was easy. I walked in and saw the menu board with tiny itty bitty writing on the monitors. There were no handouts or paper menus. Ok no problem. I took a picture with my phone and tried to enlarge it to read. I ordered a medium Blackout Coffee with Oat Milk. It came out pretty fast. Except, it wrong size. Eh? How did the barista heard small? I was contemplating with large but changed to medium. She apologized and I patiently waited. 20 minutes passed, my friend almost finished his large coffee. I got anxious. I went to the counter asking about my order. "Where is it?" Everyone behind the counter was searching. Heck. It would be cold by now. Why does it take 5 people to do one person's job? Just go make me another cup. My order finally came out. That's 33 minutes of wait time. I didn't turn ugly on them by asking for a refund. Because my friends were in my presence. Another problem, cashier asked me if I wanted something to eat at the time of ordering. "Sure, give me some donut holes." She replied, "sorry. We are out of this." Eh? "Then, give me a scone." (Inaudible with her mouthpiece) "sorry we ran out". I was looking at the empty pastry case with tags only... do they even have anything at all? That's insanely crazy. Oh one more problem. They were not in any kind of uniform. One tall guy wore a Black Rock branded graphic shirt. Everyone else was whatever. Fine. Just be whatever then. I'm not coming back. read more

Wow! I finally decided to give this place a try and I am so glad I did. I ordered via DoorDash because there is no location near me. The cold brew was out of this world. It is seriously the best cold brew I have ever had. I love the alternative milk options and the syrup options. I love the sizes of all the coffee as well. I ordered a medium and I could've sworn it was a large. This may be my new favorite place to get coffee from. I hope they open the location near me soon. read more

I felt like I was inside a coffee shop in a former Eastern Bloc country. Not much to choose from and what they offered was very bland. Caution, when going through their drive through, it is very hazardous. The curb is small on the inside. And there's a steep drop on the outside. I curbed my car over it now. I'm stuck till I get help and the only answer they had was. This has happened at least 12 other times to people. Otherwise they don't seem to care. The coffee is pretty good and prices are comparable to other coffee shops, maybe a bit pricier. ($6 for a small). The inside is clean and staff was friendly. One thing to note is that there are only outlets on the wall so only 4 tables have access to the outlet and all of these spots are under the AC. It blows really strong and will give you a headache over time so make sure you have a jacket or a hat if you want to be near an outlet! read more

I needed to find a place open early on a Saturday. After a quick look on the Yelp app, I found this place. Not crazy about the location (it faces the feeder road to the Beltway) but the interior of the store quickly made me forget the chaos outside. Pretty cool mural on the wall, clean & very friendly staff. After ordering our java & scones we decided to sit on the couch along the back wall. Our drinks were up & I must say, what a tasty cup of joe! I settled for a latte & it was perfect from tempuature to flavor. The lemon blueberry scone was perfect, slightly sweet w a bit of tartness. We love a good coffee and spend time on weekends going out on coffee dates in the morning. This place is easy to pass up as it is near a gas station. Look carefully to your right hand side. Luce Ave has been a long time favorite, but this one has been a surprise. We came in excited for our new spot. We ordered our usual vanilla latte hot and cold. It was my first time ever coming into this coffee shop today. I came in at around 2:15pm after work and I felt so welcomed. The young man that took my order although I can't remember his name was very kind and seemed genuinely interested in what I was saying. What stands out to me about Black Rock Coffee Bar is that in addition to coffee, they offer energy drinks that are made in-house. This isn't something that I've seen at any other coffee joint. And you have two options there. You can either buy one of their pre-packaged energy drinks, or you can make a slushie out of it where you can mix an energy drink with various fruit flavors. I stopped by around 9 AM and unfortunately didn't have the best experience. The staff seemed rushed and less than welcoming. It felt like I was being hurried through my order. Before I even finished paying for the order, my drink was already handed to me, which raised some concern, especially since I had a fairly specific order (espresso, caramel, oat milk, and matcha). The drink didn't look or taste like what i ordered but likely their regular matcha latte, so I went back to ask if the espresso had been added. The barista replied, "Espresso isn't typically added to matcha latte," to which I pointed out that I had specifically requested it. She then abruptly grabbed my cup, poured espresso over the top, and handed it back just as hastily as before. Now I'm dealing with stomach discomfort--likely because I was given whole milk instead of oat milk. I understand mornings can be hectic, but a bit more care and attention to detail would go a long way. The drink is a blend of cocoa powder, vanilla, cinnamon, and almond mixed with espresso and 2% milk. I love anything Mexican vanilla flavored so this was perfect for me. I'd like to start out by saying that this is getting 4 stars instead of 5 only and only to clarify that this is not a true coffee focused shop. As in, don't come here expecting an oat milk latte made with freshly roasted espresso beans from Ethiopia. What this is, is a vibin' fun spot to hang out or study at. Great indoor and outdoor seating and if you're lucky and the day is nice, they'll open up the doors and it'll be all open air, which especially in the pandemic is a nice option. This place rocks! Excusing the bad pun, but I seriously dig this place. Not only are the drinks amazing, the staff are some of the friendliest around, even super early in the morning before most of us have even had our coffee to make us pleasant humans. Whatever beans they use here have no burnt taste; they are smooth like butter and rich with flavor and aroma. I love that they have specialty flavors using your base latte - true standouts are the Caramel Blondie (caramel and white mocha) and the Caramel Truffle (caramel mocha). They also offer a variety of delicious pastries and selection of Tacodeli breakfast tacos. The interior has a good vibe; seems like the kind of place I would want to come study or work in. The parking lot is sorta small, but should be able to accommodate whatever crowd shows up. One of the best perks here is their drive-thru with very fast service. If you live/work in the area, this place should definitely become your go-to in the mornings. Came in today to get a nitro and the person that made it (the manager) did not make it well at all! The drink tasted like water and it wasn't even mixed all the way. When i order shaken espressos here sometimes they give me burnt shots. I used to come to this location a lot but now ive been going to the Westheimer Dairy Ashford location and they always make my drinks right and they are super friendly. Nice little coffee shop with a very indie feel. Good ambiance, with some music playing but not so loud that you couldn't talk.
