Fuck this place. What a scam. I have amblyopia, which this place (used to) specialize in. And they used to be great! But it seems the owner is banging an employee or having an affair, or their drinking has caught up with them or who knows what. But the operation is a giant mess. Save yourself! I make an appointment. It takes 4 weeks to get in. I show up and am told, "Oh, we tried to contact you! There's no doctor today..." OK. So we rescheduled and I left. Came back 4 weeks later and got my eye exam. Bought glasses from them thinking, "I know I'm getting ripped off buying glasses from the eye doctor, but at least I'm supporting a small company and not Lens Crafters." I get a call 3 or 4 weeks later to come pick up my glasses. I drive up there and the frames are literally missing an entire lens! They're frames, with nothing in them! And, I shit you not...."This isn't what you ordered??" WHO THE FUCK WOULD ORDER THIS?!? Wait another 3 or 4 weeks, get another call, and come up again to get the glasses, which are fine. At this point, it's taken me 4 trips from Carson to get an eye exam and a pair of glasses. A couple months later, I'm trying to get a pair of motorcycle-specific glasses from Flying Eyes and have requested a copy of my prescription AT LEAST 10 TIMES. Black Rock refuse to send me a copy, which is a violation of federal law. All the while, since the appointment, there have been an e-mail blast going out to all customers. The first, "We're closing our doors permanently - come get your medical records." A few days later, "We've decided to stay open!" Then this afternoon, "We're closing our doors permanently..." again. If you go on Facebook, the company is claiming that they have to close because of, "employee fraud." I'm no brainiac, but I am an accountant, and there is no fraud an employee should be able to commit, other than stealing cash out of a register, which might amount to 1 or 2 percent of a medical office's revenue? Regardless, it's not enough to close a company, so I'm calling BS. Something bigger is happening, involving the owner, and they're too puss to admit it. Save yourself a giant nightmare and go elsewhere! read more

I've been a patient at Black Rock Vision Center for years, and always enjoyed the staff and Dr. Eisley who unfortunately is no longer at the practice. I had an appointment early in the morning and arrived on time, only to witness Dr. Southam yelling at his receptionist and then taking another employee aside to berate her for 20 minutes. When it was finally my turn, he gruffly accused me of having an issue with him--despite the fact that I had never met him before. Once I was in the exam room, he walked in and abruptly canceled my appointment after I had been waiting for over an hour, offering no explanation other than, "I can't do this with you today." He then handed my file to the front desk and refused to see me for my scheduled visit. Dr. Southam's behavior was incredibly rude, unprofessional, and even threatening toward both his staff and patients. After years as a patient of this practice, I will never return as long as he is there. read more

This has been my eye care center for 4 years. The staff is highly competent and provide excellent care. You go through all the tests to determine what you need and the type of corrective lenses best for you. Since I wear both glasses and contacts they offer support for those needs. With an eyeglass shop on site it's super convenient. I would highly recommend if you are looking for an eye dr. read more

I've been a client at Black Rock for many years. Unfortunately they are not what they used to be. I tried to get an appointment with the doctor I'd been seeing for years and was told he isn't scheduled to be in the Reno office at all. The preapproval request that my insurance requires was supposed to be sent to the insurance company in December. Not done. I called in January. Still not done so I called and canceled my appointment. Instead of asking me why they hung up. Didn't even say goodbye. Too bad. Used to be a good practice. read more

After the nurse did her initial tests, waited about 10 more minutes until the doctor came and grabbed me. I saw this office in Reno. I went once two or three years ago and was happy with the optometrist I saw. However, the parking was very poor, and the building was awkward for me since I am in a wheelchair. This time I saw a different optometrist who was not able to accommodate me in a wheelchair. I am puzzled about what had changed, because the first visit was easy. I did recommend this office after the first visit, but I would not recommend it now. read more

Dr.s seem fine, front office doesn't seem so great with details. Example - this year provided my new insurance card - same insurance name as last year, but a different employer. I discussed that when providing the card. My current insurance wasn't billed - 5 phone calls later w/insurance & front office to determine they didn't bill the current insurance. -before getting my glasses I was called with an additional charge, they had forgotten to add the charge when I was there. -had to go in to get the big credit due (to adjust for having charged the wrong insurance group). Could go on but you get the idea. Check sent in end of November, same day as property taxes sent in. That check cleared this one is still floating in the wind. I called - paid - moving on in 2023!! read more

I had the worst experience with their front office staff. I had been a patient for a few years, recently called to make an appointment for an annual eye check, the front office person asked for my insurance, I told her I have insurance but did not have card handy and it would not matter as I would pay cash. She refused to make me an appointment. So I went to another doctor. Then today I stopped by their office to order a pair of sunglasses I loved but new puppy found and chewed same front office person was like dealing with the guard of Fort Knox she told me I needed an appointment , I told her I just want to give you money to order a new pair of sunglasses. She then snatched the prescription I had brought-in out of my hand....OMG the worst experience ever - I will never use them again. read more

I had a cataract surgery, and my vision got a lot better. When I had a follow up checkup to Black Rock Vision Center in Winnemucca, Nv. Dr Southam told me that I need glasses. So, I went ahead and order it. I was excited to pick it up because I thought I would be able to see much, much better. But when I was about to pick it up, and when I tried it, It was blurry. I could see better without it on distance. So, I got upset and said that I want my money back since I paid it in full when I ordered it. The lady said that I have to schedule an appointment, to have an eye check up again. I called them before my appointment and said that I just want my money back. The lady said that the doctor wants to talk to me so, I can have my refund. I went to see him again and was rude, didn't want me to finish what I wanna say and just cut me off so I just walked away. After I left , the lady called me back and said that the doctor will refund me half of the cost. I asked why only half and said that because it costs them money to order to the laboratory which I think is BS. read more

I would like to say first of all that the staff at Black Rock vision are great people and very friendly. I have been coming here over 20+ years. Since DR. Mier left I am having nothing but issues every 2 years when I get new glasses. Each and Every time I have to bring them back as the right eye lens is wrong. I came back because of the staff but this was the last visit for me. Now my insurance company and I are out of pocket over a 1000.00 as I returned the glasses and walked out when I got back from vacation. Of course they would like to take care of the problem but this constant issue you would think the doctor would get involved To over see the issues. I understand this is a training facility now for new optometrists if I'm not mistaken . That being said I will be paying my credit card fees for the new glasses I returned as this office does not do refunds. I'm truly disappointed how this turned out And I will use the scratched up glasses for 2 more years till I am able to have my insurance cover new glasses in 2023. read more

After a lot of agonizing debate over what optometrist to try in Reno... I went with Black Rock. The last time I went to an optometrist was about 5 years ago in Seattle. I'm now in the Reno/Tahoe area, and since I don't have any insurance getting an eye exam and new glasses is a pretty big thing! Well, Black Rock ended up being perfect! The building is neat and tidy and professional. The staff is friendly and equally professional. The eye exam was the most thorough exam I've ever had, (and painless!) And they have lots of frames to choose from for glasses too. About a month after I got my new glasses, I noticed a scratchy/scuffy mark at the top of one of the lenses. I went back in and after studying the damage they offered a theory as to what may've caused it, and how to prevent that from happening again. And... They ordered a new lens to replace the damaged one! This is a top-notch eye clinic! They certainly have my business. read more

I started having vision problems in school about twelve years ago. I've seen a few different eye doctors but Dr. Southam is by far the most thorough eye doctor I've ever been to. Most exams are just reading a chart and then having the crazy eye contraption in front you answering questions with a one or a two. But Black Rock measures and tests absolutely everything (depth, peripheral, color blindness, etc.). You will be at your eye appointment longer than what you are used to but that's good since they are testing so much. They are also open late on Tuesdays so they can accommodate busy work or school schedules. On top of contacts that I've been using for years, I recently went in to get fitted for new glasses. Shawn was absolutely wonderful! She was extremely patient with me while I tried on two dozens frames. She was also honest with me if a pair just didn't fit my face right. And although I picked out a pair, she's going to let me go in when the frames come in and double check that I still like them before they make the lenses. If I don't like them, she'll refund my deposit or apply it to a different frame. read more

I have never had such an awful and upsetting experience at any business in my life. We have gotten many glasses frames from here before and it has always been a hassle, but I thought I'd try one more time. My son needed new frames so we stopped in and were treated with shocking disrespect. The staff were very annoyed we had not made an appointment, but even when I stated we'd be happy to make an appointment and come back, they said it was fine. They brought us frames to look it but were constantly rolling their eyes at us. I repeated that I'd be happy to make an appointment and come back, but was told, "No, we wouldn't make you come back again." However, when the lady finally came to help us she was clearly annoyed and upset at us being there and constantly glaring at us. She refused to help us or even just be kind. She then blamed us for not having an appointment and continued to treat my son and I like trash. I will never return to this place!!!! It's so disappointing, as my son has special needs and our choices are pretty limited. So thanks to Black Rock from treating their repeat customers like crap during hard times. I had my first appointment at Black Rock Vision last week. After a full exam for contact lenses, they sent me home with a new pair of lenses. The lenses didn't feel right in my eyes, so I went back--and they charged me $50 for the follow up visit, even though it was their mistake. And the first (and wrong) batch of lenses they ordered for me ended up being almost double in price than the lenses that fit my eyes properly (and that I had been using previously for years). I'm all for making a profit, but not at the expense of high quality customer service. I'll be taking my business elsewhere. read more

My entire family goes to Black Rock Vision after having to change doctors. This practice is wonderful. Both doctors work to ensure the patient is given time and a thorough exam. I recently brought my son in, and told the doctor my eyes were bugging me from my new prescription too. He looked up my chart, gave me samples to try to correct my issue, and scheduled a followup for me while taking care of my son. All at no charge. My daughter had her first appointment at Black Rock yesterday and we had one of the best experiences we've ever had. My daughter is visually impaired and suffers from high anxiety during exams because she's had to have about 1000 of them over her 20 years, but Dr. Southam and his staff were amazing and made her experience as easy as possible. He was also able to increase what vision she does have and to see my daughter be able to read something besides the big "E" at the top of the eye chart made me cry, but it was a very happy cry! The wait time was no longer than 5 minutes and the doctors were so thorough in helping me get the care that I needed. The staff was so friendly and knowledgeable! Dr. Southam was AWESOME! This was my first visit to Black Rock Vision Center and I had a great experience. The receptionist who ran my insurance was not the friendliest, however it was the end of the day and I know she must have been tired. The exam process was thorough and I felt they got a good understanding of where my vision is at. Dr. Southam made up for the lack of great service by the receptionist. He took the time to personalize my exam and he really showed a genuine interest in my vision. I will certainly be back and will recommend this office to others. read more

The glasses they prescribed actual made my vision worse than with a previous Rx. After a replacement they were still unsatisfactory according to my ophthalmologist. The company policy refused any further correction. I feel justified in complaining since this result is due to their error. read more

They got me in same day right away when I woke up with a swollen eye (which turned out to be a crazy eye infection that cleared up within a week after meds). I came back for a routine eye exam and everyone was incredibly friendly! They were more thorough with my exam than any other eye exam I've had (and I'm 30 and have them yearly). Recently went to go get my eye exam done and possibly new glasses and was sort of disappointed. I had to take time off work, which does not bother me, but when you waste my time then it does. It starts off with the receptionist who tell me my co-pay is $25 when I know its 15, but I go with because Im not an insurance expert. come to find out she didn't know how my insurance worked or how to read it? This issue got situated when one of the frames sales lady comes out and explains how my ins works to me and the receptionist. Then I get taken to the back for the test which took about 30 mins to get done. Im use to going and getting these test done in half the time at another place but because that place is an out of network provider it wasn't beneficial for me to go there now. The doctor who saw was good though, quick and to the point. I asked questions and he answered them without adding or dragging them out. Next I went to go choose my frames. This was my nightmare. I have wide head and do not like frames that squeeze my temples, so this is the first thing I tell the lady along with the fact that I do not want oaklys because that's how the majority of those work the hug your head. The first pair of frames she shows me were oaklys... then I ask her for the wider frames and she points to the wall behind me with like 40+ frames on it and then just kind of stands behind me and watches me go though the frames. No help what so ever. At this point Ive been at this place for about 2hrs. I asked how fast they could get my glasses done and hey said 5 business days and that was it, I left the place went to lens crafters and they helped me choose an awesome pair of glasses and they got them to me within an hour. I went to black rock because of the review but it wasn't as good as it was made out to be read more

Dr. Southam and the team at Blackrock are the best in Reno for eye care. Not only do they attend to the usual exam, perscrition, etc., but Dr. Southam is very focused on prevention and keeping your eyes as healthy as possible. He recommended some eye exercises that have really helped my eyes to be stronger and less tired after working at a computer all day. They have a great optical department. Lisa is super attentive and always helps me find the right solution. I wouldn't go anywhere else. This location is NOT CLOSED! 8/22/1014 Just under new Ownership and the experience is still incredible. Dr Michael Southan came is 2 hours after the facility closed to get metal out of my eye. I called at 5pm. as a new patient with NO insurance and metal in my eye 2 days from my wedding. Dr. Southan came in after hours reopened his office and went to work on my eye. Not only was he a total professional, but very calming and comforting as well. I have never felt easy around doctors, and Southan has a way of making you feel like long time friend. All my eye problems from here on out will be at the Black Rock vision center. In a world were doctors are more concerned about your insurance then your health it is nice to still have doctors like this. THANK YOU BLACK ROCK! read more
