We found them on a Friday night when in from out of town. We had to wait a little to be seated, even though there was only 1 table occupied in the main dining room, although there were several patrons in the bar eating at high tops. The main dining room was dirty. There were a few tables that weren't bussed and there was trash on the floor. During our time there, none of the tables would be completely bussed, nor the floor completely swept. Servers would come through and take a plate or two or a glass off of one of the unbussed tables, but they would never finish. Another server would sweep part of the dining room occasionally, but never where there was crumbs or trash. We ordered a sangria and a house margarita and iced teas. The iced teas tasted old and stale. The sangria was ok. The margarita had an off taste. The waitress later told me that they make their own sour mix. It tasted like they mixed the pith from the lime in the sour mix as the background note was bitter. As far as the food goes, it was bland. We got guacamole and chips as an appetizer. The guacamole was just mashed avocado with no salt or lime juice detected. There were no onions, tomatoes, jalapenos or cilantro in it. It was a bland and sad excuse for guacamole. At least it was green and fresh. I ordered the Baja tacos and my husband ordered the steak burrito. Again, everything tasted bland. While there, another patron came in and waited a long time without anyone coming to seat him. He even said, "Does anyone work here?" My husband replied, "Theoretically." The person left. Our server was not extremely attentive, but she was ok. If you are tempted to go here, save yourself money and go to Taco Bell. It may not be Mexican, but at least it will have flavor. read more

Stopped her on a Friday night with a party of 7 and was seated immediately. There were a-lot of tables left uncleared of dirty dishes, but that could have been the timing. Margaritas were good as was the threesome flight of queso, salsa and guacamole. I ordered the ahi tuna taco and it was good. My daughter ordered the barbacoa quesadillas and they were filled with meat and cheese, but really greasy/mushy on the outside. My husband got the Hot-mess Burrito. This is a really good brew pub that serves out of the ordinary burritos and tacos, many with twists provided by Korean, Thai and Middle Eastern food influences. Not something you'd expect in Charleston, WV! I can't compare this place to a traditional Mexican food place based on what we ordered, but just considering it on its own, the food and beer were excellent. The service was also excellent. The decor is typical sports/brew pub. We started with beer flights along with chips and salsa as an appetizer. Among the beers, we were most impressed with their Rainbow Radler, Shot Caller (similar to New Belgium's famous Fat Tire, but in my opinion, actually much better) and their Utter D milk stout. Their Coco Reaper, with Carolina Reaper peppers in it, was unusual to say the least. It was a bit much, but worth a try in a flight. For entrees, we had a selection of weird tacos. My favorite was the roasted beet tacos with feta cheese. My husband loved the schipotle orange pork taco. The portobella taco was also good as were the Korean beef bulgogi taco and the chicken za'atar taco. We love White Duck Tacos where we live in the Asheville, NC area, but this place could definitely give White Duck some real competition in terms of innovative tacos. If we're ever back in Charleston or if they open a place in Asheville, we'd definitely eat here again (and again!). read more

We eat here regularly. Almost always get 2-3 tacos (love the thai shrimp, chorizo, korean bbq, baja) and sometimes get their house salad (which is quite good) and one taco or fries. We never get the burritos because they're just too big. Of course they have a great beer selection, but if you can pry yourself away from beer, I've found all their cocktails to be excellent! They use that great nugget ice. Their house rock, the spicy pineapple, and the mexican mule are excellent and better priced than most restaurants. As much as I love this place, it's in need of a refresh inside. The other locations with the same owners are much cooler and updated compared to the Charleston Black Sheep. Unfortunately, the execution does not live up to the concept. The ahi tuna taco were fine, but not the best. Similar with the Thai shrimp. What saved our meal was the chicken wings--we ordered the Siracha-honey glaze and were blown away. First off, the wings were HUGE, with crisp, light fry on the outside and were juicy and flavorful on the inside. The wings are served with a maple-ranch which was great. LET ME TELL YAH. Black Sheep bamboozled me with some of the best gosh dang chicken wings I have had in a loooong time. The chicken is cooked to perfection with the perfect layer of honey sriracha sauce on them, sticky and scrumptious. The fries are so crispy you think you just escaped the 7th layer of hell to the sweet embrace of heaven, perfection. When we saw the menu, we were worried, since they had Thai food, Korean food, Mexican food, and usually when a restaurant is a jack of all trades, the food isn't anything to chatter about. After reading the reviews on both Yelp and Google before going, I'm highly disappointed to have a different perspective. The positives - the place if clean, the staff is ridiculously nice and happy. The small things matter in a restaurant and they nailed this. The problem, oh the problem - we ordered the 3 taco meal (mahi, tuna, steak of the options) and a steak burrito. The first two of the tacos would have been 4 stars, the margarita (meh) and service (solid) which would have kept it there to pushing it to 5 since there are no 1/2 stars here. The problem & issue...Oh Em Gee: the steak was horrendously 'over cooked'. My partner in crime is an amazingly non-confrontational guy when it comes to food, so when the manager came past to ask how everything was, he said 'fine', and the manager went on. A few minutes later he came back by looking at me and said my face read different than his, so he wanted to give me the opportunity to weigh in. Not being shy having grown up in restaurants as a young adult, I told him that I would want someone to tell me that this meat was ridiculously overcooked so chef would look at it and correct for the night, despite my companion not wanting to make waves. His response very emotionally adamant that the vendor subbed what is normally a flank or similar that they normally hand cut with 'this chopped dog meat that I hate'. Read that again. He knew it was crap...served it...and doubled down on the supplier...and had the customer pay for it (and at full price of steak not 'dog meat'). Dude, cook it less, refuse the delivery, make it into something edible, but don't give me an inedible taco and burrito and have me pay for steak while telling me it is dog food. Seriously, so many good reviews, but that food and service exchange was just ridiculous to the point that I couldn't not share. It very much came off as a check the box kinda place which is sad because it. has SOOO much potential - location, vibe, cleanliness, happiness of staff, however not a great moment. The manager will know exactly who I am if he reads this and will know he failed, just as he knew at the table placing blame elsewhere. Really friendly ambiance and fun staff. The place has an uber mountaineer hippie feel which creates a total vibe. On select nights they have live entertainment and I do have to say the band performing when we came was pretty darn good. The burritos were good; wouldn't say amazing but they were good. I came with my girlfriend and her friend that lives in the area for a quick lunch yesterday. I was happily surprised to see that they had a vegan burrito right on the menu!
