The food is good, but the service is hit or miss. The last waitress got upset with me because I told the other server that she might have forgotten to bring us an item and if he could do it. She made sure to yell across the rim she didn't forget, and she had to help some other people first in a rude manner. read more

After reading a ton of reviews we decided to try the Black Sheep Cafe & Catering for breakfast this morning on McGilcrist. Its not to far from where we live and we like trying new places. My BF got the Biscuits and Gravy. Scratch made biscuits with sausage gravy. He said it was filling and had good flavor. The gravy had an over abundance of sausage which is good to see. I decided to get their daily special which was the Eggs Benedict. The grilled ham was nice and thick. It was a bit fatty on one side but I just cut it off. The hollandaise sauce was thinner than im use to but it was still good. We liked the country potatoes. We both got them without the bell peppers and onions. We chose to meetup at Black Sheep based on the extremely high reviews and were slightly disappointed. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't great. A+ for salad green freshness and meat preparation. Breakfast is served at all times which is nice. There was nothing on the menu that can't be found at other similar restaurants. Espresso drinks were frankly awful. Ambiance was a challenge. Not in a walkable or pleasant area. Inside is 1980's cafe-esque. The constant screeching of chairs dragging across the floor was shockingly loud. Despite my 4 star rating, this is my favorite breakfast in Salem. I deducted a star after trying a Reuben for lunch. I love their made in house corned beef and their thick marble rye bread for breakfast so presumably the Reuben must be worthy of equal praise. It fell short, only because of quantity and assembly, quality was definitely there. The very small portion of meat wasn't a good ratio to the thick bread and it was a very small portion of fries. Hands down best cafe I've been to in awhile! The restaurant itself is so very cute and inviting. They have a great amount of brunch type foods and specials on certain days which is nice! I would like to try their chicken fried steak day soon! I ordered their Ruben and bf got the fish sandwhich. The bread is very sweet and it was a pretty big sandwhich! I picked the potato salad as the side and it was my favorite and prob best potato salad I've ever had tbh! My bf sandwiche was bomb dot com! He let me have a bite and the fish was so juicy and flavorful! The filet was on the smaller side, but it was yum! He picked the chips and Salasa for his side and it wasn't really a salsa? Excellent food and usually not much (or any) wait time. Located off the beaten path in a strip mall, but they do a great job! Their gyro is my favorite (1/2-lamb, 1/2-steak) along with sweet potato fries. Get extra tzatziki sauce for the gyro, and the mango-habanero sauce for the sweet potato fries! Enjoy! read more

We were heading to Eugene from Portland and decided to find a place in Salem to eat. I looked and saw black sheep cafe had great reviews. It was off the highway about 8 minutes. It was definitely worth it!! The service was awesome to start. Then the food!! It was amazing!! I had the catfish Poboy with homemade fries! My husband had the teriyaki chicken bowl. Small cheddar bay look alike biscuits but without the cheese and even with their small size they don't give enough gravy. The gravy wasn't bad but was bland. My wife and I just had breakfast here. I had to the corn beef hash and she had the lamb gyro scramble. The food was exceptionally fresh. The atmosphere is nice. There are some personal items hung up on the wall, illustrating the owners passion for the restaurant business. You'll probably pass over the place due to the location, but you should give it a chance. They used to focus on catering and provided really great food in partnership with Santiam Brewing. The space is attractiveand inviting. The service was excellent. Friendly, helpful, and prompt. My wife and I shared a Reuben and the corned beef hash. The Reuben is probably the second best I've had in Salem, with Word of Mouth's beimg first. They seem to make the corned beef in house. The sauerkraut was tart and enough. The rye was nice. They use thousand island. The corned beef hash was different. I would describe it as healthy. Lean corned beef, not a lot of potatoes, crunchy cabbage, and a smidge of sauteed onions and peppers. It wasn't hashed, more like layers. The eggs were perfect. They don't have Tabasco sauce, which was a disappointment. I think if you love Tabasco on your eggs and potatoes, you won't like the hash. If you want a healthy, fresh hash alternative, you'll like it. read more

The waitress was the only one in at the time we were there and was super busy and rushed BUT she was very friendly and didn't just act overwhelmed but happily went about serving everyone. My boyfriend loved his breakfast burrito and raved about the mushrooms, freshness and how filling it was for the price. The corned beef hash was super tasty for a savory breakfast item and was a huge portion, great for a second meal! We couldn't say no to a cinnamon roll when we went in, it was delicious as well. My parents live in Salem and they have been raving about the food and service. We came in today for brunch and couldn't be happier with the experience! Fantastic food and amazing service! We walked in and ordered take out. They immediately got our order. The chili with brisket was amazing.
