For anybody driving through or visiting. This is a very nice place to stay with very large and well amended rooms. All the staff I ran into a very polite and efficient. They do have the ability to take dogs for those that travel with pets. They have a breakfast buffet that is extremely nice and always different. For people that love their coffee, they have a nice blend of coffee always hot pot sitting there. It is less than a mile away from downtown Northampton and if you haven't been to the town, it is a very lovely little place. So highly recommended and if your neighborhood don't hesitate. read more

This is a motel. The rooms open into the parking lot, and as a result can clearly hear people talking/walking by (the photos on the website are a bit deceptive). The room was clean, but musty smelling (as was the main lobby). Staff was friendly. I will say, re-reading some of these 5 star reviews after we stayed here seem suspicious or people who have never stayed in a hotel before. Very overpriced for what it is. However, if you value proximity to the campus and downtown above all else, this would be a reasonable motel to stay at for a night with the above caveats in mind. read more

Between three and four stars here, but I bumped to four because it was overall a positive experience. If you're looking for a place for an overnight in the Northampton area that is pet friendly, this fits the bill! First, the honest feedback. I was initially fooled by the photos of the front of the building, which is a charming colonial matching the aesthetic of the surrounding old homes and Smith College buildings, but is definitely more of a motel setup with two floors of units in the back. I was also nearly scared away by some less-than-savory reviews, but options were pretty limited based on us travelling with our pup, so we decided to give it a chance. Glad we did! The staff at the front desk was friendly, helpful and conveniently gave us a room on the first floor, which we were able to drive right up in front of. For pup walks, they have a spacious backyard area that is very clean and well kept. Our room was small and clean, aside from a couple of dead bugs and a bit of mustiness. The bed was comfy, the shower just right after a long day of driving, and the Beekman products were a nice touch. We don't have cable tv at home, so we loved having a TV marathon and eating complimentary homemade cookies (available in their reception space), in ice cold air conditioning, after a long hot day of hiking and driving. When we left the next day, check out was a cinch, and while we didn't partake, we noticed a nice continental breakfast set up (yogurt, bagels, eggo waffles, coffee, etc.). For the TL,DR crowd, if you aren't expecting super fancy ammenities and are looking for a clean, peaceful place to rest your head with your pup in tow, this is a solid option. read more

The Ellery is fabulous ! The outside does look like a 1950 s motel & it was indeed a motel w a pool . But the interiors are hotel like . For sure . They have a separate building w two cottages , that we have liked . It is quiet . Great for walking & just a gorgeous little town . Slightly odd & very much , New England vibes . The beds are high quality. The TVs are Roku & I think that's awesome . I do love the morning offerings & the fact that tea and other refreshers are always available. Staff are great ! Downtown , has Ghost bakery , omg , go early & u won't regret it , Thorns , is the sweetest mini mall & it is easy to not notice it . Several artisan shops , and candy and books . Use the lavatory here , all 1920 s original . Beautiful! Shopping downtown is really fun & lots of variety , high quality shoes , really cool novelty stores , Eileen Fisher and really nice jewelry and art stores . Lastly , I prefer staying upstairs , but we have stayed in the motel looking part & it was still very nice . read more

We planned a last minute trip to tour Smith College and we were so delighted to find a room at The Ellery. Would stay again if we ever come back to Northampton. read more

Totally agree with the other review . Spacious, comfortable, elegant & well appointed . It's a short drive to town , but also , only a 6/7 block walk , easy and really pretty . Smith college a stones throw away , and also makes for wonderful strolling . Can take in The Botanic Garden @ Smith as well . I guess the start of the garden construction was around 1894 . The Inn is very quiet . And the coffee and pastries , were perfect . Huge fireplace , looked inviting for the fall / winter . Staff , all very friendly , and helpful . Also , has Roku TV for your streaming pleasure . Great place to stay , when in Northampton. Check it out . read more

Our room at the Ellery in Northampton was extremely spacious. We slept soundly in a comfortable new king size bed with mountains of pillows. There was no street or guest noise at all. The room was very clean with a ton of natural night, ample bathroom with fluffy towels and the room with understated furnishings. I would highly recommend The Ellery. Continental breakfast with fabulous coffee, pretty dishes with toast, pastry, yogurt with fresh fruit and cereal. Just a short drive to shops, dining, Pine Theater at Look Park (which is what brought us to town for an overnight), and a mile from a Local Burger which is open for food till 3am. Completely comfortable and charming. read more

Well all previous reviews must have been pre covid or another manager! Work has had us traveling all the way up the east coast. During our drive we have stayed at many hotels with covid restrictions but this is the WORST by far! They contacted us the day of check in to give us a code to get out of a box. No lobby open at all. When we got to our room, I had to get to the bathroom (girls and little bladders) and there is almost no toilet paper and no extra rolls anywhere. No bottled water. No instructions for anything just a key wrapped in a card. When we went to get in bed, whatever soaps they used to clean the sheets was so stiff and strong I broke out into a rash and itched all night! No sleep. One towel each. Bad lighting. Not one piece of paper or pen to write down notes that came through for our employer. I mean COME ON! $300 bucks for two nights?????? In the past 3 months we have stayed in Best Western, Marriott franchises and mom and pop motels and they all had little coffee makers and packed a breakfast for us with water bottles and had toilet paper and sheets not itchy!!!! When Knocked on the lobby door a guy peeped his head out with a mask and said "no ice, you can't come in". I'm said "well how about I have not toilet paper!" He said I'll get some to you. I said "I hope you understand you will be getting the worst review I've ever written". His response.... "I know". Why even be open!?!?!? I would have had better care at a hotel 6 truckstop. First, we were emailed with one room number and then given a key to a different room upon self-checkin arrival, so communication was not great. The photos of this place were significantly nicer online than the reality of what we encountered. The room was zero frills, the bed was uncomfortable, the shower curtain was full of mildew, and the tub would not drain. For $245 for the night, I would not recommend this place or stay again. read more

This was the perfect place to stay while visiting family in Western Massachusetts. The rooms are clean, modern, and the staff was top notch! Not to mention the beds were very comfortable. We were a little hesitant to stay in a hotel during COVID 19, but their policies made us feel safe. I think we found our new hotel when we stay in Western Mass. read more

The Ellery has a boutique feel with updated amenities - I had a wonderful stay at the Ellery for the long weekend! Reading older reviews, it's very clear the hotel is under new management and was COMPLETELY renovated. From the moment I came through the door, Krystina (front desk) was phenomenally helpful and friendly. It was a busy weekend, but she buzzed from task to task with a friendly smile; she made us feel welcome and taken care of. The style is like a cozy boutique inn; I could have spent hours in the common room with a massive fireplace and hearth! The continental breakfast was simple but good (local coffee/pastries, fruit & greek yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, oatmeal). The rooms were clean and renovated, and our bed was amazingly comfortable. Mini fridge in the room but no coffee machine... but they keep fresh coffee downstairs 24/7! Could hear some little noises down the hallway, but nothing that could disturb our stay. I would absolutely recommend the Ellery to anyone who was taking a weekend away in Northampton or the Pioneer Valley! Cannot wait to go back! read more

While staying at the Ellery Sunday night, July 3rd, I attached my watch to the bedpost so that I could see the time when I woke up in the morning (as there is no bedside table on that one side).  When I realized later that morning that I had left the room and hotel without it I immediately called the front desk and told her what happened and said we were on our way back to retrieve it.  When I arrived 10min later she came around the corner saying, "Did you get the messages I sent?"  In fact, no messages were sent.  I know I would have received them, as I had received others from her regarding our check-in/check-out procedures. I fully expected she didn't understand where I'd left the watch when I explained it on my call earlier.  So, I proceeded up the stairs to the room; she, following me.  She unlocked the door and we entered.  I immediately went to the bedpost where I had placed and left it.  It was gone.  There is NO way that watch could have gotten off that bedpost without someone removing it intentionally.  She fumbled with the newly-made bed saying maybe it fell under the mattress.  Again, there is no way the watch, fully clasped, out of reach of any contact, could have magically fallen under the mattress or off the bedpost.  I asked her who made up the room to which she replied the head housekeeper.  She made absolutely no motion for us to question the housekeeper.  My husband and I drove around the building to where the cart to clean the rooms was, and where an open door to supplies was.  I called "hello" hoping to speak, myself, with this housekeeper, but no one answered, no one was there. We left, to say the least, so disappointed and angry by this turn of events.  There is no question in my mind that my watch was taken by staff at the Ellery.  My husband and I had such good memories of staying at the hotel when it was the Autumn Inn (our daughters live in the area) and were looking forward to extending our memories to the Ellery. We certainly will not be staying there again and we advise all others to stay clear of the Ellery! read more

The Ellery cancelled my reservation last minute on a busy summer weekend because they failed to reopen as planned. Even worse, they cancelled by email, rather than by phone, and with no real apology. Then, they sent me a marketing email to stay at the hotel on my next trip to Northampton with no acknowledgement of the cancellation, apology, or discount for my next trip. I thought it was all extremely unprofessional, and I will not plan to stay on a future trip. read more

We stayed in the Autumn Inn a few years ago and agree it needed an update. The Ellery has done this - and more. While the room is still quite small (not a complaint, but just may be an issue for some), the remodel has transformed the property into a meticulously clean, elegant space. Customer service was exemplary; we had to modify our plans twice before traveling and this was handled well and easily. Management is responsive and kind. We will definitely be back! read more

We stayed here overnight on our way down from Northern Vermont to CT, and we had a really nice experience! The hotel is very simply but tastefully decorated, everyone working there was very friendly and helpful, and the beds are the very best in comfort! We really appreciated the mini-fridge in the room, since we had a cooler full of groceries in tow from the lake house we came from. The living/dining area was also very comfy and cozy, and there is really good local coffee in the morning (being allergic to milk, I was impressed that the hotel includes oat milk in the coffee bar), and also bagels and a few basic cereal choices. We were not able to access the Wi-Fi in our room, and apparently management is working to solve that with Comcast (Comcast--ugh! We have them at home, too, so we know how unreliable they can be). But I didn't mind moving to the living area downstairs for Wi-Fi, since it's so nice and homey down there. For people who have to work from the hotel or need privacy on a Zoom call, that could be an issue, and you might want to make sure it's been resolved, but for us passing through on vacation it wasn't a real inconvenience at all. I wasn't able to find a hairdryer in the room, and that would be a nice thing to have included. The location is terrific--a nice safe neighborhood where we didn't have to worry about our bicycles, which we left locked up on the back of our car, and we really enjoyed walking into downtown Northampton for dinner and again for breakfast (we opted to eat out in the morning, but as I mentioned, you don't have to, since there are bagels and coffee at the hotel, which is a nice convenience). It's about a 15-20 minute walk into town, past Smith College and some very pretty houses, and downtown is so fun to explore! We hope to come back soon, and when we do, we will definitely stay atThe Ellery again! read more

We had stayed at this establishment in the past when it was the Autumn Inn, a very nice place. The Ellery has transformed the previous establishment into a cozy, modern, elegant place to stay. This is a hidden gem in the Northampton area, just over a half mile walk to downtown. The renovated rooms are beautiful, cozy, simple and modern. The fireplace is great for the morning breakfast they serve, as well as enjoying a glass of wine in the evening. Staff is very friendly. Highly recommended! read more

If I could give this place a 0 rating I would. My partner and I had a block of rooms reserved here for our wedding in September, of which our closest family and friends booked, along with us for our wedding night. First off, I had to reach out numerous times to even get a response about questions I had regarding our block. When I called in May, I spoke with a woman (won't disclose her name here) who told me there was a "10% chance they would not reopen for their original June 15th 2021 reopening date". This was because Smith College had a contract with The Ellery that was expiring on that date. Smith College had bought out The Ellery for the past winter as overflow for their students during the pandemic. The woman I spoke with admitted the hotel remained completely vacant/unused by Smith College that entire time, hence why she didn't think they'd renew their contract. Sure enough, I had to call The Ellery on June 15th to find out they were not reopening in 2021. YES, I HAD TO CALL THEM. This put me and half of my wedding guests in an absolute scramble to find other accomodations in the area for our wedding weekend. I can only imagine how much panic/stress this caused for couples getting married in the summer who had blocks there!!! The icing on the cake was when our wedding guests who had booked there didn't even receive the automated email cancellation until AUGUST 7th 2021. Of course I had already informed them myself and had to make other hotel arrangements (of which were extremely scarce), but SERIOUSLY?! Almost two months to inform your guests about this?! I have never dealt with such an unprofessional, inconsiderate, and careless business in my life. Please take your valued business elsewhere, folks. You've been warned! read more
