Such a unique and cozy bakery. Very clean and many yummy choices. I found the brownie tower a little dry and the peanutbutter bar too sweet. The carmel apple cheesecake bar was on point. The staff could be a little friendlier but the baked goods are yummy! read more

Holy cow! You MUST stop here when in Bristol. Delicious donuts, macarons, muffins, cinnamon rolls, sticky buns, and that's not even the best stuff. Scored several bars, including pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin pie and blueberry lemon, along with an upside down caramel dream cupcake and sat down to enjoy a chess bar and the most delicious chocolate pots de creme! A local told me to check this place out and so I decided to stop by and have a white cream donut and a house blend coffee. The consistency of the dough in the donut was one of the best I've ever had and the amount of cream was just right. The coffee was absolutely delicious and for the price of $1.51 (12 oz with free in-house refills) I was thoroughly impressed. The interior of the bakery was very pleasant, and I hope to one day be back to try the other items on their menu. read more

Stood in line for 30 minutes only to get to the counter and have two very "unhappy -to -be -there "employees rudely hurry you to pick something and very unhappy if you asked a question. And the rudeness wasn't just to us but all the customers who went before us as well. Spent 28 dollars and about 45 minutes of time in line to pick and then pay and the product was quite disappointing. The cupcake was dry . The mousse had a weird wang to it, and the doughnuts were just made and yet dry. Not a good birthday treat. We won't go back! read more

Excellent food. You have to wait for kind of a long time, but that's understandable because EVERYONE wants to go there. I guess my only other recommendation would be having more doughnuts on hand. Part 1: The Donuts Most people who know me know that if I was to willfully die by eating a food, that food would be donuts. In other words, I LOVE donuts. With that being said, I would like to uncategorically state that Blackbird Bakery has some of the best donuts I've ever tasted! On this occasion, I chose for my first visit to Blackbird the following donuts: Cake Glazed (5/5), Yeast Glazed (5/5), Orange Glazed Cake (4/5), Pumpkin Cake (4/5), Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter filled (3/5) I'm a huge Peanut Butter fan and in fact, if a menu has a peanut butter dessert, I will choose it 9 times out of 10. I say this because I was disappointed in the peanut butter filling in today's donut. It had a flavor I couldn't place in the filling that was not my favorite. I couldn't even eat more than one bite. It might be that I prefer Peanut Butter filling/icing to be simple. Part 2: The Coffee I'm a coffee snob. There I said it. My wife often complains at the number of coffee producing devices that litter our kitchen. But I don't let that deter my obsession. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the coffee served at Blackbird (Dark Hallow Micro Roasters). I ordered a simple black coffee and opted for the Dark Roast. Very good (5/5) My donut rating explained; 5 = I will order this donut every time I visit and will tell everybody about it 4 = I will order this donut if really hungry or if no 5's are left 3 = I might take a bite if someone I'm with orders it 2 = I will never again order this donut 1 = I will actively convince others to not order this donut. read more

Traveling to the Bristol, VA office for my company and wanted to bring donuts to the staff the next morning. I needed a sugar fix so I went to blackbird the night of my arrival for a personal snack. I was welcomed right away and amazed at all the selections. The slice of coconut cake was light and delicious. I wish I had purchased an entire cake. I'm still dreaming about the cake but the 6 hour drive brings me back to reality. The next day I purchased 4 dozen donuts and was pleasantly surprised at the low cost in comparison to their competitors. The donuts were fresh, light and fluffy. The bakery is in an old building which still has some of its original architecture. They are open 24 hours and have a band playing at night. The atmosphere was very welcoming along with the staff. We were driving to Tennessee and saw a sign for this bakery. A quick google search showed glowing reviews, being huge dessert fans we absolutely had to make a stop. The bakery decor is very cute. I was immediately impressed with the decor as well as the selection of desserts. A bakery that looks cute must have great food too, right? Wrong. Well, first, I am not sure if the staff is used to having brown customers but they were definitely more friendly to the caucasian couple behind us than they were to us. I had a few questions about cakes but the lady serving us didnt look like she wanted to answer anything. Her answers were quiet, short, close ended. I never once saw a smile on her face, never heard a hello, never heard a thank you or goodbye except when my husband spoke those words to the staff. Anyway, we were going to meet some friends at the smokey mountains so we ended up buying a cake, some snickerdoodle cake, chocolate mousse, and coffee. She told me she will add sweetener to the breve but she didnt and at that point it was too late to go back for some sugar. Now, about the quality of the food: To all the people praising these stale cakes, stop by the DMV some time and maybe try some real fresh cakes?!?! I have never seen a coffee cake crumble like it did in my husband's lap or a cake where the frosting is literally separated from the sponge (we bought pink almod cake). Do you guys buy coffee beans at 7/11? Where was the coffee in breve? It was weak, super weak. If this is the best bakery in Bristol then I seriously question the locals' taste in desserts. Will we ever come back? Absolutely not. My husband and I definitely did not feel welcome there. In our ten minutes at the bakery it felt like they really did not want to be bothered by us. The older caucasian couple that walked in behind us was also not familiar with the words thank you or please as my husband held the door for them or let them get ahead of us in the line while we were making our decision. Maybe thats a Bristol thing?? Whatever the case may be, my advice to people of color is to keep driving. There is nothing to miss here. Blackbird Bakery is a must-stop bakery in Bristol, VA. It is an absolutely incredible bakery with many delicious goods. The offer a diverse range of sweets ranging from donuts to brownies to cakes. The have a wide variety of different donuts as well: coconut, orange, maple, chocolate, plain, sprinkles etc. They also have a good range of different flavored cheesecakes. I got the red velvet cake, banana pudding and pink almond cake. They were all very, very good. The banana pudding was a 10/10. The pink almond cake was a 8/10. The red velvet cake was a 9/10. The service I received here was wonderful as well. I will definitely be returning to Blackbird Bakery, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. read more

I kept hearing about this bakery and being a huge dessert fan, I just had to try it. When I walked in and saw the line was huge, twisting and turning almost to the entrance, I was both anxious about having to be in line so long and feeling like this must mean the dessert is good! The line moved pretty quickly and it was totally worth the wait. They have so many dessert options. I really enjoyed the cupcake and the blueberry donut. As one of Bristol's only bakery and pastry shops, Blackbird fills a niche worth filling. I've visited several times over the years, and have always found their baked goods good-enough for the area. Mostly, the items served lack refinement: the scones are too sweet; the doughnuts too soft with too much icing; the coffee only so-so (likely due to roaster or brewing method). I do like their downtown location; the building is historic and offers plenty of seating, including on the sidewalk. Make sure to go in the morning, when the doughnuts are fresh and case is stocked. read more

I wish they would add more items to the menu, I live in the area and have eaten them so many times over the years. It would be nice to have an actual bakery item choice, too. We arrived around 11:15pm on a Saturday and the place was hoppin'. Tables were filled throughout the cafe and the line was long. After having tried 4 different desserts (we couldn't decide on just 1 each), I can see why blackbird bakery is packed probably all of the time. As out-of-towners, it will be a while before we return but only because the drive is 4.5 hours for us. Blueberry glazed donut: best blueberry donut I've had anywhere. A little sweeter than I like but the glaze looked and tasted like they use real blueberries to make them. The donut itself had a nice flavor and texture. Vanilla/lemon/coffee French macarons: the only 3 flavors left. They had a nice crunch to the cookies, which was great, but the flavors weren't the best I've tried. A little bland. Strawberry cheesecake bar: not my favorite. Super dense and almost biscuit-like. Which I guess could be a good thing to some but one bite was enough for me. Crème brûlée: holy crap. Maybe I don't have anything to compare this to because it was actually my first (WHY HAVE I WAITED SO LONG) but the custard filling was absolutely delicious and so creamy. The hard caramel top wasn't as hard as it should be, but it had also been sitting in the case probably all day. The first bite I had was a little off-putting because it was a tad too burnt but everything thereafter was heavenly. I used my finger as a utensil towards the end... New favorite dessert. We will recommend this place to anyone visiting the tri-cities. read more

I can't even begin to say how much we enjoyed this place!! There were 4 of us and we all enjoyed everything we got...key lime pie, peppermint cupcakes, cookies, banana pudding and a few different bars...it was all excellent!! We wouldn't have bought so much had it not been for the wonderful guy, Calvino, working behind the counter. He was awesome!! Very informative about each item, very friendly...we laughed and joked with him...he's truly a super star employee!! The desserts are awesome and the service was superb! We made the trip over to Blackbird to pick up some sweet treats this morning. Located in downtown Bristol, I can't say much for this particular street, as it looked mostly devoid of businesses but the bakery was a sight for sugar sore eyes. It's a cute shop with glass cases exhibiting row after row of mouthwatering sweetness. We selected the coconut filled donuts, Bavarian cream filled donuts and a dozen of the glazed holes. Once home, we dug in to the delightful bits. I found the coconut donut to be good yet overly sweet with a grainy texture; as if filled with frosting. Not for me. Next, in line was the chocolate Bavarian creme filled donut. Now, I have had a love-affair going with eclair-type desserts since childhood and have quite a bit of eating experience in this area... Their "Bavarian creme" is of the pudding-like custard variety, which is my favorite, but typically donut custard isn't considered a Bavarian creme so I did have to ask the girl for clarification. The donut was topped with a chocolate ganache. I could peel it right off. It was good but dare I say it.... ordinary. The holes were just holes. Also, unmemorable. Although I found this bakery to be cute and completely necessary, it failed to impress me with its donuts. read more
