After a long period of time and expense the issue was settled to my satisfaction. The mechanics and reman process are legit. Mike Jr. is the problem at this business, avoid dealing with him. I had to pay bill via wire transfer at additional expense to me. I took my pontoon boat to blackbird motors from mountain home Arkansas which is a 15 hour drive to have my 225 Optimax power head replaced. I dropped my boat off that morning and they replaced my power head and had my boat running by 4:00 that afternoon. I took my boat out on the water and it runs just like it did when I bought it new!! Great experience here buying a new motor for my boat. I was needing to update and upgrade my outboard. Larry did a nice job explaining everything clearly with what engine to choose and why. He drew up a very professional quote. . He even took me in the shop to show me around and the facility. They even accommodated me with letting me drop off my boat outside of hours and staying later to help me. After installing the new motor Larry went over the engine and took me around the boat and showed me everything they did. I was very impressed. Larry went over maintenance. recommendations and how to best operate the new outboard. They also allowed me to leave my old outboard on the property until I found a buyer and even helped my buyer load my old engine onto his trailer. Amanda was so great in the office. PLEASE DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY. We purchase a 2018 Yamaha 25 hp motor with "4 hours" running time from them in January 2021. We originally visited their shop to see if they would rebuild our 9.9 hp & have a new steering cable installed & Mike Jr talked us into this beauty that had just been traded in. We picked it up in March & paid $5700 for the motor & cable installation. When we got it home, none of the gas lines were installed and the cables to the dashboard gauges were cut so we had to purchase the cables & gas line & install it ourselves. We put the boat in the water. Immediately the alarm was going off which indicated low oil pressure. Did they omit adding oil too? So back to the dock to find out there was oil (thankfully). We took it back to them (1 hour each way) and they had 3 mechanics look at it. None could figure out why the alarm was going off so we were told to leave it. About 1/2 hour later they called to come get it, 'it was fixed". We drove back up the next day & asked for the problem. We were told "it was a sensor". Took it back & put it in the water & the boat would not idle. It would go above 3500 rpm but stalled after 8 seconds of idle speed. We called again & they said it was something simple, bring it back up. Another 2 hours on the road & they told us to leave it. They had it for over a month without even looking at it. Now it is summer & we live on the water & want a boat. We called to asked if we could come up & get it & drive it that way until they were less busy to look at it in the fall & were told yes by the receptionist. When we arrived to pick it up, Mike Sr. said we could NOT do that. Wasted trip. He also said, "You know, September is the best time to be on the water" which indicated to us that he wasn't anticipating it being fixed until September & now it is June. We pleaded with him to please take a look at it & see if what the mechanics did to fix the alarm had something to do with the idling. He left us to talk to the mechanics & came back & said they only DISCONNECTED the alarm!! Great fix huh? He told us if we wanted to take it to a Yamaha dealer, he would pay for parts just not service or labor. We left there discouraged but checked with several Yamaha dealers in the Pittsburgh area & when each found out the motor was from Blackbird, they refused to touch it. Early July we found a new to us pontoon boat for sale in PGh & purchased it. A few days later, we got a call, "your boat is fixed, come get it". So happy that we could now sell this boat to help recoup the price of our new one we went back up to Blackbird. The boat was parked out front & we backed up to hook it onto our car. I noticed that it was NOT our 2018 Yamaha motor but a 2006 Mercury motor. Mike Sr. appeared all smiles & wondered why we looked sad. He told us he had put a loaner motor on it so we could have it to use and we would have to sign papers that if anything happened to it we would be paying for it (we had no idea the condition of this motor) . I told him we had purchased a new boat & wanted to sell this one but couldn't sell it with a motor not belonging to us. HE WAS FURIOUS. I asked him to tell me a bit about this motor & his response was, "it works, yours doesn't, and I'm done talking to you" He walked away cussing and swearing at me. I went to the office to talk to Mike Jr (who sold us the motor). He told me if we wanted to keep this motor on the boat to sell he would give us a little bit of a refund. I asked how much & he said $300! We paid $4500 for the Yamaha! I asked if we could have a 1/2 hour to discuss it & we'd let him know. He agreed. We drove down the road to discussed it & decided that since we were selling the boat, it really didn't matter about the motor as long as it was running. We called back within that 1/2 hour. The receptionist said Mike was on the phone & would call back. This was 11 AM. At 5:05 we got a call that we needed to come & pick up our boat as "it was parked along the road outside of their locked gate & they were not responsible what happened to it". I asked about the motor & she said the broken Yahama was put back on it. We drove up & brought our boat home. We checked with another Yamaha dealer & never mentioned we got it from Blackbird. They agreed to put it on their computer for $125 to see what was wrong with it. They called Yamaha & was told the warranty was void because it was not registered to us but to someone from Delaware. The computer module was bad & not only bad but had an X on it. They asked if we put the X there which we didn't. We can only assume that Blackbird knew it was bad & had put an X on it & it was that way when they sold it to us. We had them replace it for $1000 with $500 being for the part. I sent the invoice to Blackbird and Dawn has contacted me, refusing to pay for the part. Many lies, vulgarity & simply treating customers rudely once they have your money. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. Small town feel, big time Mercury Marine Service. Started my quest at the end of Sept dealing with Mike Jr. He presents you with many options - no pressure, great advice on what might work best for you, but also allows you to make your own decision. Incredible inventory options and customer service. Drove 5+ hours for them to install the motor which only took them 2.5 hrs. Thanks to my last minute decision to change gauges the entire install took 11.5 hrs. Not one complaint from Mike Sr or Larry or Josh. They worked through lunch AND dinner and no one complained or took any shortcuts. Cables were dressed like they were done at the factory. Larry (lead mechanic) is by far the best Mercury Certified Mechanic I've dealt with. No matter what question I asked he took the time to answer in great detail. Had to purchase some small ancillary parts and their prices are not like normal marine prices. They don't gouge or nickel and dime you. Going anywhere else for Mercury engine replacement or service would be crazy. Me being 5 hours away will not prevent me from having them doing any major work I may need in the future. I recently purchased a re-manufactured Johnson Ocean Pro power head to replace my 2001-175 hp Evenrude Fitch engine. After talking to Mike De Mayo Sr. about the exchange it sounded like a reasonable idea while also trying to save money. The new power head was installed on 8-3-2020 and while they were installing the power head they found a solenoid that was bad. Thought, OK, that can happen. Put the engine on ear muffs and ran it for about 5 to 10 minutes and said here you go. Took it out the next day and had a hard time getting the engine started. When it did start a lot of excess smoke was coming from the prop exhaust. Tried to clear it out only to find that the motor would only get up to 2500 rpms and the check engine light kept coming on. Called and talked to Cathy and she said she couldn't get me in till August 27th which would mean losing 3 weeks on the water. After complaining to the 9's Cathy said bring it in on the 12th of August. Within 5 minutes the mechanic found that a Heat Snyc had gone bad and was replaced. Once again Mike De Mayo said they couldn't guaranty every part is good. My question back to him was why didn't you test the engine properly? Just before getting ready to leave one of the mechanics and I started talking. He told me the issue was one of the employees that rebuilds the power heads is not paying attention to business and is causing a lot of quality dissues. Now I'm really concerned. On August 13th, 2020 I took the boat out and still had a lot of smoke from the prop exhaust PLUS the check engine light still keeps coming on. I have a marine repair facility that has a mechanic that is really good with OMC engines so I left it with him on August 17th. Dustin calls to tell me that OMC has a "red" manual choke on the engine in case you need to pull start the engine. That manual choke was broken "internally" and allowed fuel to flood the carbs. Dustin said this is a part that constantly breaks externally but not necessarily internally. Dustin replaced the manual choke and now have an engine that will run fairly well from 1000 rpm's to 3900 rpm's. That cost me another $300 that "should not have been" and Backbird Industries will not reimburse me for their mistakes. I still have the check engine light issue which is concerning. I have sent emails to Mike Jr. only to be answered by Mike Sr.. He tells me the problem is somewhere in the gas delivery which is creating the check engine problem. He says this is my problem because the carbs have little or no adjustment and anything outside of 5 degrees +/- on the timing has no effect on engine performance. My only question is, what is his responsibility with regards to the parts re-installed or engine performance or warranty. He claims he can't be responsible for every replaced part. I say why not, you gave me a one year warranty. I'm about to find out because if I don't receive the answers I'm looking for I will take this to the Attorney General of Pennsylvania and file a formal complaint requesting an investigation. Oh, by the way, don't do what I did and changing from the Fitch Engine to the carburated engine because no dealer will work on it. My bad ! I did not received a Model number or Serial number for the 2001 Ocean Pro which puts me at risk getting the correct parts. If you ask Mike De Mayo Sr. he'll tell you if the mechanic knows his business he doesn't need the model number or serial number. WRONG! I have a serious issue that will be remedied one way or the other. When you see Blackbird Motors, Inc. go the other way as fast as you can. Chances are you will not have a good experience. read more

I've purchased two motors from Blackbird motors. A 2225 Optimax and most recent a 2000 Mercury 200 EFI. Been having Optimax for about 4 years now with not one issue. I purchased a 2010 Mercury Verado from Mike Sr. I was told it would be 2 weeks to do the engine replacement. It took 6 weeks. I brought the boat back to Michigan (340 miles each way). I took the boat out for a test run. We ran it approximately 45 minutes. Brought the boat home and checked the oil. IT WAS FULL OF WATER. The motor also was throwing multiple codes. I took the boat back to them and to their credit they replaced the powerhead. Took the boat back out to test it and it was still throwing codes. We saw the voltage was only 11.4 volts at 1500 rpm. checked the alternator and it was bad. I spoke with Mike Sr. and he promised to send a replacement for it. That was 12 weeks ago(still haven't received it). Had to pay 400.00 for a new one. Started to have problems with the starter the first day(wouldn't engage) Asked Mike Sr. for a new one, again he promised to send me one (11 weeks later still don't have). Paid 460.00 for a new one (works perfectly). I paid for a 2010 Verado 300 and received a 2008 Verado. read more

I purchased a rebuilt 225 Mercury Proxs from Mike DeMayo Jr. in June of 2017. After installation, my mechanic said it seemed a little under powered. After several months with the new rebuild, I could tell their was an issue with the motor. Just couldn't get it to turn more than 4,600rpm's. I called Mike and explained the problem but told him I was going to fish the rest of the summer and early fall and then we would see about what I needed to do. After my last tournament at the end of October, I called Mike back and ask if I could return the motor for repairs, and he immediately said sure. He even paid to have my motor picked up and shipped back to Blackbird. They found a crack in cylinder 3 and replaced the entire unit. My new motor has even more power that my original Optimax. The motor now turns almost 6,000rpm's and I couldn't be happier!!! Besides that, its incredible good looking without a scratch on it. So pumped!!! I would also like to thank the girls at Blackbird. In May 2012 I sent them my Johnson 1998 250 Ocean Runner to be rebuilt and within 7 hours of running the motor it developed problems. I followed all instructions they required. I sent the motor back to them for warranty repair and they found one of the pistons had a hole burnt in the top of the pistons. This was due to the carburetor for that cylinder being adjusted too lean at high RPM. They repaired it after numerous phone calls and implied I had done something wrong. It took me 3 weeks to get the motor back. I got the motor back and installed it and within 2 hrs of running it again it started to give me problems. I called Mike, (owner or son of owner) and he gave me a lecture and implied I'm the problem and have done something wrong. I had a local marine mechanic look at it and he suspects internal failure, but needed to tear it down to confirm. I have not done anything with the motor so far. I followed their instructions..added additional oil (50:1) for the first 10 hours. This is additional oil in addition to what the VRO Oil System provides and kept the RPM below 5000. Before the sales Mike was very helpful and stated they rebuild over 1500 motors a year. However, after the sales they are very difficult to deal with. Once they get your money they act like you're a nuisance if you ask them any questions. I don't recommend them, would not recommend them to my worst enemy. Not sure I have any recourse and suspect I'm out $4000. I just checked with the Better Business Bureau in West Sanbury, PA where Blackbird Industries is located and they have 9 complaints in the last 3 years. 4 of them were were problems with product or service 5 were warranty complaints. The BBB has given them an "F" rating. Buyer beware if you plan to do business with them. read more

If you are researching this company then you are most likely thinking about buying a motor from them. I would advise strongly against it. There prices are great but you will get what you pay for. I bought a motor from them that the owner sold me on over the phone the summer of 2016. The only thing that went smoothly was them taking my hard earned money. I took possession of an e-tec 300 and had it on my boat the first week of July 2016. The first trip out I knew something was wrong it didn't have the power it should have had, and it was burning over a half gallon of oil an hour. I called the company and LeeAnn politely referred me to Mike jr cell phone, not the owner that sold me on that motor. I tried to call him numerous times and left 2 voicemails over 10 days. He never replied to me so I texted him and got a response from him only through texting. I explained what the issues I thought was going on, he simply brushed me off by saying it was in break in mode and didn't have time to explain to me how it works and the boat I put it on was a heavy boat and would not get that much performance out of the motor on that boat. I continued to run the motor and after only 9 hours of run time one of the cylinders went bad and needed to be rebuilt again. Mike jr told me to get a compression test done on it so I got my mechanic out to my boat that was towed back to my slip. My mechanic went over it and found out that it was only firing on 5 cylinders and there was another cylinder that had no compression, also came to a conclusion that the oil pump was wide open that's the reason way it was using so much oil in such a short period of time. I tried to call mike jr with the bad news on the motor and could not get ahold of him and was forced to text him AGAIN. He stated the motor needs to come back and get rebuilt I agreed. He told me to get a compression test on the motor then refused to pay for the mechanics bill when I brought it up to him, he also refused to pay to get the motor dismounted then remounted when it returns even tho I just paid for it to get professional installed a week prior. When the motor was done for he second time he actually called me and said that they rebuilt it and replaced the bad cylinder I asked about the other issues and he said he was not sure it they were fixed and sent the motor back to me. This was over 2 1/2 months and the season was over. After all that I felt so violated and disgusted on the treatment I received from them I had to sell the motor. I would never feel comfortable going out on the water with family and friends with no confidence of returning on it's power. It's someone else's problem now. I am not here to bad mouth this company just to share my experience and hope this helps avoid someone else to go through what I had to go through and avoid dealing with them. The headache I got from this is not worth it. After all said and done the owner who I tried to get ahold of multiple times would not even return any of my phone calls to try to make this right. For a supposedly professional motor company to send out a motor they said they test ran with only 5 out of 6 cylinders firing, then have another cylinder go bad on it, and dismiss the oil consumption problem has no business being in business. If you are looking for a respectable motor company look into ARG marine, speak to Tom he knows his stuff and is a true business man. I bought a rebuilt outboard from this business. They are hacks. They put warped heads on the motor and the head gaskets leaked within 2 hours. The powerhead was not bolted on correctly. They left 2 nuts off of the studs. This caused the powerhead gasket to fail. They put old used and cracked oil lines on the oil injection system. Their warranty is useless. Read it carefully. No matter what goes wrong, they put the blame off on you. It took about $3000 dollars to have a mechanic repair the mess that they sold me. I was lucky to get off that cheap. Stay away. read more

The supposed "Warranty" is useless. They sent me a Powerhead with a bad rod, when I called they told me I would be responsible for repair. Soon the Crank broke because the bad rod failed. It cost me $2000.00 in mechanics fees and a whole summer lost while the boat sits with a broken motor. They claimed my core was junk so wouldn't refund my deposit. Stay away from these people. I recently had a 90 hp evinrude power head rebuilt by this outfit. It was shipped to the transit terminal and then on to Canada. I had my marine shop there inspect it prior to installing it. Here is what they came up with: metal shavings in the block, a sparkplug hole stripped. I called Mike at Blackbird and he told me..' those smucks don't know what they are doing and just put the motor together and it will be fine. All I asked is if his work is warranted. The answer was no and that my guys stripped the plug port, and put metal shavings into the cylinder compartments. The shop I use in Canada has had my boats for over 30 yrs and NEVER have I had an issue with them. The Canadian guys called and informed me that there were crank bearings that would need to be replaced and miscellaneous other parts . In all I will have an additional $1200 in parts and labor. I will try to recover part or all. I would never recommend these guys. I used Blackbird industries one time 1.5 years ago for a rebuilt 60hp Merc. The price they gave me was installed and hooked up to my boat. They put the throttle cables on backwards so that the reverse gear was making the boat go forward-bad as the transmission( lower unit) is not set up to handle the torque going fast. I dismissed this as a random error on their part and asked for a partial refund to cover the cost for my shop to correct it. They gave it begrudgingly. I guess I was lucky that the Merc. wasn't as screwed up as the Evinrude. Don't use them. read more

Don't believe what you are told by Mike, he should be in politics, lies lies you try to take a man for his word but all I got were lies , be careful what you buy from this co. I bought a merc. xb 250 for $7,800.00 dollars. The lower unit had problems from the get-go, put it in reverse heard loud noise from lower unit I called Mike told him what the problem was he told me the installer did not know how to hook it up, the guy I used to hook it up has built boats all his life from the ground up ,custom high performance bass boats. I sent lower unit back to the co. they said nothing was wrong with it? I put it back on the motor it still had the same problem. I guess I will have to buy a new lower unit, .but the paint job was really nice . Mike tried to sell me another lower unit, I wish I would have read Blackbirds reviews first. DON'T BUY FROM THESE PEOPLE!! I guess when your company gets so many complaints you get kicked off of EBAY because I can not find them on the site anymore? read more
