The Blackhawk Museum is easily one of my favorite museum experiences!! I love how organized and clean the museum is - each portion of the museums' themes were so well thought out and was beautifully displayed. It was in a gorgeous plaza, parking is easy, and we spent about 2 hours here and it was for sure worth it for the price that we paid. Very nice museum. My husband and I enjoyed it. I especially liked the World of Nature section. It has been a very long time since I have been to this museum and it was nice to see how it has changed and been expanded to include more exhibits. After we purchased our tickets, the fellow at the front ticket counter told us to put away our bottle of water since they have a rule of no food and drinks. I understood this policy, but I noticed when entering the car display, one of the docents was drinking a cup of coffee with no lid. If they are going to implement a rule, they should do it across the board. Also, there is no bathroom on the top floor (the Old West exhibit) which I found odd. I had to go all the way to the first floor where the car display is to go to the bathroom. read more

I arrived a little while after they opened on a Sunday. Parking was easy and there were only a few other visitors. A sign at the front indicated the elevator was out of service on this day. I took the stairs to briefly look at the Old West exhibit upstairs but we were able to use the elevator with a stroller to see the World of Nature exhibit downstairs. The Art of Africa, Into China, and automobile gallery are on the main floor. I was surprised how much there was to see, particularly the Into China exhibit. Looking forward to coming back for a longer visit and spending more time reading about the exhibits. read more

WOW! They did a great job adding exhibits since I was here as a kid! The nature exhibit was awesome, the China exhibit was GREAT, the Old West was also SUPERB. The fresh and salt water animal exhibit was also good. The Africa exhibit was a little on the small side, but it had a lot of artifacts. All the exhibits were very informative and very well done. I would def recommend this place and it takes 3 to 4 hours to see everything. read more

I had never heard of this museum until recently, when we went for the firs time. Wow, this place is impressive; it is filled with stunning displays, so you may be occupied for an hour or two. My husband said it is known for their cars, and they have a fine selection of historic vehicles, but there is so much more. There are no live animals, but the natural history area is comprehensive, as are the other areas. They are located in an outdoor mall with a manmade pond occupied by geese. This place is beautiful. First off it is huge and you can easily spend 2+ hours here if you're actually taking in the exhibits and reading on them. Wear comfortable shoes because you will be walking. There are elevators for those unable to take the stairs inside. The cars are perfectly polished and even if cars are not your thing, you find yourself absolutely loving at the cars on display. I will say I was disappointed that the Into Africa display was the very smallest of all although the carvings were, masks, paintings were amazing. You will be utterly amazed at the detail put into each of the displays and not just the animals that at some points appear to be looking right at you but the China display and the Native American display. Well Done. The museum is absolutely beautiful and the staff were great. We were greeted by Gabby who was super friendly and even joked with us a while before we entered. What a cool museum. I consider myself a museum buff and loved my visit here. I have lived in this area for years and always thought Blackhawk Museum was a car museum only. It is WAY MORE than that! There was such a large variety of exhibits that there was something of interest for everyone in my group, which ranged from a preteen to over 50! My favorite exhibit was the animals on the lower level. It was a delight to my visual and auditory senses! This is a museum I would take kids of any age, including adult "kids"! :) Tips: - You can buy tickets online or at the front door. There is no price savings to purchase online. - Check online for hours because some days they don't open. - The museum looks small from the outside, but it's actually quite large. I would plan 2-3 hours to walk through the rooms, or longer if you like reading the signs. read more

We came on a day where they were setting up a wedding reception in the antique car exhibit so that was cool! I didn't know you can rent out the museum. The museum was quiet and not crowded on a Saturday afternoon. There's about 5 different exhibits to walk through and it's a nice place to spend time. What a great place is! We decided to go here because even growing up in the Bay Area, I had never been. When we got there, we found out that it wasn't just cars anymore. What a great surprise! They had about 35 classic cars, but they also have new exhibits: into China, Africa, the Wild West, and a nature one. You can easily spend multiple hours here. It's quite a large area that they have - I wasn't expecting it when we entered. All the docents were wonderfully helpful and informative. I even came back with another group of people to show them what is in our backyard. I hope the word gets around because it's a great activity to do so close to home! read more

We recently visited and brought our family from the South Bay to the museum and we were all blown away by how unique and beautifully each exhibit is--and how genuinely warm and attentive the staff are. The vintage car gallery was a Wow and the other exhibits were also amazing. Our favorite after the car gallery has to be the to Into China because it transports you somewhere different, with artifacts, replicas, dioramas, and artwork that feel thoughtful, rich in detail, and inspiring. What makes the experience even more special is the people working there: every staff member I encountered was friendly, ready to explain something more, and clearly cares deeply about what's on display and how visitors engage. If you're looking for a museum that combines wow-factor exhibits and human kindness, this is one you absolutely have to see. read more

Came on a hot day because I read a review of someone saying there was a children's play part. They used to have it, they don't anymore. They replaced it with a nature animal exhibit. It is a bunch of big fake animals in like big nature scenes. We decided to try it out since we already drove there. 20$ for adults, 15 for seniors and kods under 6 are free. My 3.5 year old was scared of the nature exhibit, one of th3 rhinos moves and it terrified him. He did lime the car exhibit but that only killed maybe 15 minutes. I gave 3 stars because while the facilities were nice and there was nothing exactly wrong with it, but it's not for us, especially this time in our lives when we have a 3 year old. So we won't be back. I wish there was a children's museum that was interactive and good like the ones in marin or sf. And the lindsey one is pretty boring to me. read more

The best museum I've been to. The variety is amazing, from an intricate Chinese exhibit to incredible classic cars to westward expansion and detailed exhibits on animals of different ecosystems. My mind was blown away- the only tricky part is finding this place as Google maps isn't the most accurate and the shopping promenade signage isn't too accurate. Believe me, it's 1,000% worth it though if you prevail in going up the hill to park beside the museum and make your way inside. The fee is so fair for the incredible experience you get. I wish I had known about this museum earlier so I could've gotten a membership! If you do become a member, they have special guest speaker sessions, too. I attended an awards dinner and ceremony in this beautiful auto museum. Very elegant inside and there are so many classic cars to explore. Ample walking room around the cars and offset dining area accommodated the well attended large event. I highly recommend visiting the auto museum! read more

I honestly wasn't expecting much but they proved me wrong! They had 5 exhibits that were both interesting and educational. (Vintage Cars, Chinese History, African History, Western History, and Animal Exhibit) For the price point, it is definitely one of the best museums I have ever been too. I thoroughly enjoyed the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, California. The museum was spotless, clean, and attractive. There are five separate displays within Blackhawk. For my view, the most impressive was the massive number of classic automobiles. There was one from the US 1880s! Two very old cars included two Stanley Steamers which run via heated water and steam. There also was an old Model-T Ford. The most beautiful car was a green Duesenberg, which I loved the most. The Wild West display was also very interesting. It displayed history and artifacts from both the native American Indian and the White settlers who conquered and displaced them. The display of artifacts and art from Africa was well done and I enjoyed it. The display of art and artifacts from China was also interesting, especially the Buddhas and sone of the very intricate artwork. I was unimpressed with the wildlife display, which consisted of non-living displays. Groups may be able to get a docent for one or more of the displays. There is plenty of free parking in front of the Blackhawk Museum. Also in front is an attractive mall with restaurants, but when I was there, I saw only a few people in that mall. read more

Truly a hidden gem! I had never heard of this museum before this weekend, I'm shocked it's not more talked about. I took my car enthusiast boyfriend to the Blackhawk Museum in Danville on a surprise date yesterday, and he loved it! It's important to note--this place is FAR MORE than just an auto museum. They have five exhibits total, but the star is clearly the Don Williams Automobile Exhibit - truly just incredible lineup of cars ranging from 1800s historical replicas or models to modern day 2010s super cars. The "Into China" and "World of Nature" exhibits were fantastic as well. Expect about 2 hours to get through the whole museum, or 90 minutes if you're not stopping to read all the plaques. Tickets were very affordable. $15 for students and $20 for adults. I think children under a certain age get in for free. The staff were all friendly and nice when we walked in, there's plenty of parking. The museum is placed inside an outdoor shopping mall so you have the whole lot to park at, and there's tons of food options to go after. Overall, great day trip for anyone in the Bay Area looking to spend their afternoon at a quality museum for an affordable price! read more

The Blackhawk Museum was started by the late Ken Behring 1988, who recently past away. It anchors one end of Blackhawk Plaza near the border of San Ramon and Danville. The museum was famous for it's collection of Automobiles but last week opened a new wing dedicated to China called "Into China". It highlights the history of China and contains many interesting artifacts of ancient China of which includes the Throne of China's Emperor. The Blackhawk Museum is actually quite big and is divided into four major areas: The China exhibit, the Africa exhibit, the Americana Western exhibit and the Automobile exhibit. At $15 adult admission it's a great value and interesting way to spend an afternoon. The venue is beautiful and modern which is why they host corporate and private events. It's great to have the Blackhawk Museum just down the street where the Tri-Valley can learn about other cultures. Photos are allowed. There is plenty of parking along with a couple expensive restaurants located next door. Blackhawk Plaza is a nice stroll with fountains and streams meandering through the center of the plaza. The Blackhawk Museum is definitely is a destination stop in visiting the Tri-Valley. read more

Wow! What a hidden gem. For $20 we spent hours here exploring the various collections. There are 5 different exhibits: Vintage Cars, Wild West, Art of Africa, China history and Natural History. We went for the vintage cars and were pleasantly surprised by the amazing condition and quality of cars on display They have over 50 cars, each having a placard with its history - my boyfriend didn't want to leave the room. And, there is also a Wild West museum with an enormous collection of historical guns, rifles and numerous other authentic historical pieces. Great for kids, too, especially the natural history exhibit with tons of animals on display. Located in the Blackhawk shopping mall, there are several small places to eat lunch and a duck pond and seating areas outside if you pack a lunch. Can't wait to visit again! read more

This was our third visit to this museum in about five years. The first time was to look at cars. The second was to attend a David Benoit Christmas Concert. This past Saturday was to see the Inside China Exhibitions. It was crowded! Parking was challenging. Some people were friendly, others appeared to be oblivious to other guests. There was a line to get into the building. We were told just inside the door that the exhibit was to our left. As we walked that direction, another volunteer told us that the exhibition was to our left but we had to follow the line that snaked to the right first. It appeared that the volunteers and staff were overwhelmed by the crowd. A few well-placed signs and some of the same stanchions and ropes used to keep guests back from that cars would have kept things much smoother. We skipped the China Exhibition and looked at cars for about a hour and then tried again. The line was much more manageable and we got into the exhibit. It was interesting but some people feel that they need to stand their ground and converse instead of moving through the exhibit. We left. We'll go back and check it out on a weekday in a month or so when it should be much less crowded. read more

I highly recommend checking this place out. Lots of variety for history lovers from a sweet car collection to prehistoric times to African and Chinese culture. Everything is well kept and staff is super friendly. They do temperature checks. You can also purchase your tickets ahead of time online. The visit was so quiet and peaceful. It's not crowded at all. It's located right inside Blackhawk plaza which also offers great food and drink options. I unfortunately got there about an hour before closing but it's doable to skim through each space. I'd come back just to take more time reading through the descriptions and absorb the history a bit more. This is a fun place to take children above 5 that have good self-control. Terry was very informative and took the time to explain a little about the museum, eventhough I was not able to attend on this given day. He even let me walk in to the front area to view the lower area to take a "sneak peek". It's been awhile since I went to a museum and this was a real treat! I am a huge fan of classic cars! Oh yes! It's at a the Blackhawk Plaza mall which is truly delightful. I loved the bronze elephant out front and the giraffe sculptures in the courtyard. I walked in and the staff was friendly and helpful. I went to see the cars first which was great! I am always inspired by the design of some classic cars. These were wonderful examples. Next I went to the third floor for the Native American exhibit including an amazing diorama. The teepee was exceptional including night sounds from the area. It was informative and very well done. The Hollywood Memorabilia collection was great too. Like other people have stated in the comments this place is a hidden gem. We came to the museum for a birthday present for a family member. We were going for the classic car portion of the museum. I was blown away that the museum had soooo much more to offer. The Galleries on China, Native Americans, African art, and wildlife were all so beautiful and fascinating. We ran out of time because there was just way too much to see. I am looking forward to going back to spend more time. On a funny note the front door guys who sold us our tickets totally undersold it. In a way I liked it thought because it just made the surprise all the more pronounced when i started taking in how much there was to see. The exhibits that recreated wildlife scenes of lions, buffalo, gazelle, alligators etc were so well done. read more

Wow, where to start with this grand museum. There is so much history here that I had trouble with really soaking it all in! I had entry level knowledge of some of the exhibits, but I was floored with the variety and impact of the displays and knowledge stored here. I think it warrants future visits! While on shelter in place, you have to purchase your ticket online, so that's something to remember before heading over. Staff were really helpful and super engaging! They do have seating in the main lobby if you need to rest your feet like I needed to! We spent a good 3.5 hours really soaking it all in. All five of the exhibits are stunning and you will 100% learn something when you visit. I am torn which was my favorite, as many elements from all the exhibits surprised and captivated me. I do like history, and I enjoyed being able to step into the world of nature, straight into China, and explore Africa. The Old West exhibit really tore me up as I am very privy to the bloody history of California in particular. The museum does a great job of portraying a lot of the true history of the West and the subjugation (to say the least) of Native Americans and their various cultures. Overall, I think the museum is kid friendly, but a lot of the history tended to somewhat go over the heads of any children I saw in the museum, especially the Old West exhibit. There are not very many exhibits that have interactive potential, especially with covid. However, their newest exhibit (Nature Exhibit) has more kid friendly elements and flair! All in all, I recommend bringing the whole family for this gem of a museum that seems so close yet so far away! It took us three years to make in here though we live five minutes away.
