He is knowledgeable (graduate of the Golf Academy of America ) and individualizes his teaching in a way that I can understand and remember by using analogies and props. Andrew teaches both at the driving range and putting green. His feedback is always helpful and on point. I learn something new with each lesson and have seen improvements with my golf swing. His lessons are enjoyable and he makes golf fun. Other golfers have also approached me after my lesson to request Andrew's contact information. That's how good he is!

Prior to my golfing hiatus, I had taken quite a few lessons over the span of a year. My best friend was looking at getting into the sport, so I suggested that she take lessons to build a good foundation for her game. Unfortunately, it was difficult for me to find openings for the golf coach that I previously worked with due to his popularity. I had been using the driving range at Bay View to improve my game. It was there that I casually met Andrew Ka-Ne. I explained that I was looking for a golf coach and talked story with him to get a feel for his overall golf and coaching philosophies. We exchanged contact info and he texted me about his rates and availability. Andrew has the best hourly rates in Hawaii, and provides more instruction and support than other coaches charging double his rates. Simply put, Andrew is an excellent coach and his rates do not accurately reflect the value he provides. Andrew's golf philosophy is a nice blend of old and modern swing theory, supplemented by a strong integration of cutting edge golf technology (i.e. FlightScope Mevo+, swing cameras) and swing aides (i.e. wrist angle straps, alignment tools, ball striking tools, weight transfer board, etc.). Golf as a whole has significantly changed since the time I took lessons and, unlike other coaches, Andrew's view of the game is not stuck in the 1990s, 2000s, or 2010s. After sitting through a few of his lessons with my best friend and seeing her improve significantly, I was convinced that Andrew has a lot to offer. He is knowledgeable and encouraging and he has a very keen eye for spotting problematic swing mechanics. Andrew is very good at designing various drills to accomplish the same thing. He told me that every student learns differently, and it is about teaching in a way that clicks with the student's brain. Many other coaches are rigid in their approach and force their students into swing mechanics that mimic the touring pros (i.e. wrist angle must be exactly X degrees, rotation must be exactly X amount, spine angle must match [insert name] tour pro, etc.). This is not Andrew. He understands that people are built differently and assists his students with creating the most efficient swing within their own physical capabilities and utilizing their personal strengths. One of the things that I admire the most about Andrew is his commitment and dedication to golf. He will be around for decades to come, which is one of the main things I weighed when looking for a coach. Ideally, you want your coach to be available as you continue on your golf journey. This is especially helpful if you hit a plateau or see your scores flattening out. At that point, it is crucial to have a coach that can provide a series of "refresher" lessons to get you back on track. Overall, I think that Andrew has the most comprehensive approach to improving his students' games, and he genuinely cares about the achievement of his students. Without a doubt, Andrew goes above and beyond and exceeds all expectations.

As luck would have it, the person who reached out and was available at the time was the head PGA instructor Oliver. I was a little unprepared (no clubs, no gloves), but Oliver was very much go with the flow and was able to accomodate me. He asked me what I wanted to work on, and that's exactly what we did. I improved immensely, because Oliver was able to quickly diagnose the main problems with my swing and explain in an uncomplicated way (without too many "swing thoughts"). I'm excited to go home and practice/implement the changes to my swing.

We were promised a certain price from the Mizuno Rep (Russ Chong) and he told us Oliver (Island Pacific Golf Academy) would bill us and call us when the clubs came in. To this day he hasn't given us a refund. This was a hard and expensive lesson to learn. Don't do business with Oliver Oliquiano. From other reviews I've read it seems like he has a habit of ripping people off. Shame on him! Especially in Hawaii where the golf community is so tight knit!

I ended up purchasing a set of golf clubs anyway and have been pretty happy with them but I wanted to get a professional's opinion on my shafts, gapping, and lofts. So, I scheduled a club fitting at GolfTec by Ala Moana and was assigned to Justin. Justin was super helpful and didn't make me feel like an idiot. He spoke plainly and at a level I could understand... And he genuinely seemed to love what he did as an instructor and club fitter. He had me hit a couple of 7 irons and looked at what was already in my bag. He said he thought what I had was good for where I'm at but built me an updated version of my 7 iron with a different shaft just to check it out. He must've had it ready because he came back into the room in less than five minutes. He talked me through a couple of things and then showed me some video of myself swinging next to a prerecorded pro. He gave me two tips and said he wouldn't charge me for the visit. I was super grateful. After leaving, I took his tips straight to Ala Wai Driving Range and immediately hit the ball better. Needless to say, I'll be heading back for lessons sometime in the near future. Thanks so much, GolfTec and Justin!

They were running a special for $225/player (normally $275) with a 10-day advanced booking. They need a credit card to hold the reservation and you pay upon arrival. We had a 10:50 tee time and everything ran on time and check-in was smooth. Once checked-in, you'll present your receipt to the staffer who will give you a small bucket of balls. They took our clubs at the parking lot stand and placed the clubs on our cart. We grabbed a few clubs and walked over to the grass range, which was in decent shape. The course is great for all skill levels because it's pretty wide open and very well manicured. The rough is cut down pretty low so even if you miss the fairway, you still gotta shot at it. Playing the blues, the course is pretty long but manageable. The greens were in great shape and bunkers were great looking, although luckily I didn't have to play out of any of them. While it's a well maintained course, I thought the layout was kinda boring and predictable. Lots of good views and photo ops around the course, although the course has minimal ocean views. We had some vouchers from our hotel which we could use at the pro shop but not the snack bar. We ended up with a couple of bag tags, ball markers and a logo ball (gift set) which they engrave your name in the bag tag which is pretty cool for $20 for everything. The rest of the pro shop is pretty pricey though. Overall, glad we got to play it. I think the price point is what would keep me from playing again, but it's hard to beat when it's less than 5 minutes from our hotel. We got paired with a great couple, shout out Chuck and Cindy who were also visiting. It made for a memorable and fun day out on the course.

Same great experience -- she's actually the lead flexologist at the Waikele location and has an extensive background in sports medicine and wellness. These sessions are need specific to the customer and it convinced me enough that the membership cost was worth the try. It only took me a few sessions to realize that this was something that I wish I had done earlier in my life and that even though I'm getting older, my body has never felt better. I even expanded from 25 minute sessions to 50 minute sessions immediately. My flexologist Jori has been fantastic in taking care of weekly issues I may have and also in creating a long term plan to keep my body prepared for my sessions at hockey. She's friendly and always willing to give great suggestions on even things I can do at home in between sessions. They even let you use their Normatec recovery equipment outside of your sessions at any time, which has been a wonderful perk since that equipment can be incredibly expensive to buy for home use. It's been nice to come to my appointment for a great stretch and just relax while the Normatec equipment can do its thing. I strongly suggest that if this type of personalized care is within your budget that you consider it heavily, especially if you have specific needs or wants with your body. The staff makes it easy to keep wanting to come back every time and the space is always a relaxing place to get yourself taken care of.
