After Plan A and Plan B fell through, we found ourselves at this really cool spot, Black's Bar and Kitchen. This was actually a better fit for everyone because we had ample amount of space and several food and drink options to choose from...and if you know this group, good food and drinks are a must! Mainly seafood options are offered, they have everything from oysters, to mussels. I did see steak and pork-chops on the menu. Dimly lit, Black's has a very sexy and sophisticated vibe. So much so, instead of paper towels in the ladies room, they have actual towels to wipe your hands. Fancy! While at the table, my attention kept being drawn toward the wall with a mural of life like trees. Pretty cool decor. The service was really good, considering it was about 12 of us at the table. Usually with a crowd like this paying would be an issue, but our server handled it with ease and got all of our requests correct. On to the food! Everyone's food looked delicious! Not a complaint at the table and that's pretty difficult when you're with a bunch of seasoned Yelpers. I ordered the Pan Seared Day-Boat Scallops, accompanied with crawfish, sautéed Swiss chard and whipped potatoes. I was also curious about the truffle mac n' cheese, so I ordered that too. My scallops were succulent and cooked to perfection. The Swiss chard was seasoned perfectly and had such an amazing flavor. Of course my whipped potatoes were good, but that mac n' cheese was pretty bland. I'm glutton for punishment because this is my second time ordering mac n' cheese out and I've been highly disappointed. Won't be ordering that again. The drinks were flowing, the table was covered with food and we all had a fabulous time. Who knew Plan C would be better than Plan A. Use to come here quite a bit for its happy hour some 8 years ago. Anyone remember when their bar looked liked a Joe's Crab Shack way back when it first opened? Anyways, came here for birthday celebration and glad to see good, service, and upscale main dining room atmosphere hasn't missed a beat after all of these years. Addie's mussels were good (miss Addie's on the Pike), fried oysters great as was antipasti app. I had their simple grilled branzino fish (striped bass) and was good. Wish they had deboned the fish, like Fiola does. The server was nice for one of our dining companion to order from bar menu (burger with fries). Thanks for that! During my 2016 birthday tour, my dear friend took me to Black's to celebrate. I've heard many sing their praises so I couldn't wait to check it out for myself. We went after work and found the bar area and outside dining space pretty full. There was a smattering of folks in the traditional dining room which we opted for in order to get more elbow room. The wine selection was impressive, but I wanted a mojito. By the time I finished my first one, the dining room was full as well. Side note: That mojito was the best I've ever had although I can't put my finger on exactly why it was so tasty! Sure it had a perfect balance of mint, lime juice, and white rum... Perhaps it was the sugar stick garnish, but I digress. Our server Helena was fantastic as well. She discussed components of the dishes that I was considering and made recommendations with a smile. Black's offers classic dishes with an innovative twist. I wanted everything, but finally settled on the cornmeal fried oysters and seared scallops with Swiss chard for my entrée. That seafood was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. My friend ordered the filet (medium) and declared it was one of the best he ever had! He said it would have been insulting to add a sauce... Prosciutto-wrapped brie appetizer was barely enough food to share between two people. Ambivalent about the truffled mac & cheese. Stout braised cubano is tasty but wildly overpriced for the portion. Trout could've been cooked a little less, but fortunately it was saved by a fantastic sweet potato mash. Very sad that the Thai mussels came with so.little.broth. BROTH IS HALF THE FUN AND MUCH OF THE FLAVOR. Fortunately both the crawfish chowder and seared yellowfin loin were flavorful and delicious. Pecan-crusted fried chicken is rustic and moist. Happy hour menu is a little limited, and I feel like their cocktails trend too sweet (which leaves me stranded with the limited beer menu), but I've been satisfied with the food more often than not. Brunch buffet has an awesome selection of fresh shucked oysters, clams, shrimp, tuna, salmon, roe, mussels, etc! There's an omelet station, prime rib, waffles, sausage, bacon, etc. The yummiest things were the perfectly crispy bacon and the waffles! I tried to resist the waffles because I didn't want to fill up on it but it was so delicious I had three -_- Desserts were whatever. Nothing hit my sweet tooth but I did enjoy the fresh fruit and chocolate chip cookie. The seafood was definitely so fresh and made the buffet worth it but it was a tad pricey, over $40 per person. Went for the Sunday Brunch and was disappointed after seeing all of the beautiful photos on the website and especially for $36 per person I felt I did not get my money's worth. Raw Bar consisted of very small portions of different types of salad, crab salad, shrimp salad, seaweed salad. Smoked salmon with different toppings was nice. They had spiced cocktail shrimp and freshly shucked clams and oysters with a spicy cocktail sauce. The plates are very small so I had to make several trips just to fit the clams and oysters on my plate. I guess they are trying to minimize waste by giving uber small plates. But honestly the oysters were really small and didn't have great flavor and I absolutely love oysters! And I thought they would offer more selection but there just wasn't, I found myself going, wow this is it? The hot stations had food that had been sitting out for hours and definitely not fresh. Everything looked soggy, dry and oily. I attempted to try some of it but it was pretty gross. Some of the items were even cold and chewy. Also tried the prime rib on the carving station which was pretty good and the made to order omelettes had a lot of toppings to choose from. The dessert station was a joke, it was just a bunch of miniature cookies, blondies, brownies and hot chocolate. There was also fruit salad (pineapple and cantaloupe -- that's all) blah and a decrepit cheese tray that had probably been sitting there since they opened and it was never replaced with some fresh cheese. Our server was so-so and not too friendly and she seemed overwhelmed by the number of tables she had, about 6. I love the Black's restaurant group!! They are all excellent and food is consistently good between locations. We stopped in for happy hour this past week. I started with a watermelon martini which was the perfect combination of tart with a touch of sweet. We started with a dozen fresh oysters served perfectly shucked and chilled. They were medium and not too briny and very fresh. I love their Mignonette. The Oysters Rockefeller was three oysters baked with a nice blend of spinach and Parmesan and a touch of bacon. We also tried the Thai mussels and Addies Mussels. The Addie's mussels are a staple with the lightly creamy tomato sauce. I really enjoyed the Thai Mussels but be warned there is a fair number of jalapeños and peanuts as well which isn't in the description. However the Thai broth was also a touch creamy with a lovely Thai blend of spices. read more

It was way too sweet and could not taste the vodka, plus the glass was not as full as it should have been. When I brought it to waitresses attention she had a "I can fix that" attitude and brought back some more vodka to add to the drinks. She impressed me with her fix and it set a positive tone. Then we ordered regular martinis and they were fine. Flatbread tasty and crispy as well as the calamari. Would order both again. Had Addies mussels which are the best. When I used to come here it was for their happy hours. They have great deals on food and beer. Reminded of the good ole days of Gulf Coast Kitchen. Anyways, this is the second time eating in the main dining room. The first time was last year and it wasn't a good experience. This time around, my wife and I really enjoyed our dinner and the service was great. We had the oyster stew and Addie's mussels to start. They don't offer many appetizers on the dinner menu. I should of asked if we could of ordered from the bar menu for their crispy squid and fried oysters. But we enjoyed these appetizers. For a change, it wasn't salty. For dinner, we had the duck breast and the fish of the day -branzino. For sides we got the cauliflower and brussel sprouts. The duck breast was a small portion but was cooked a perfect medium rare. Never tasted duck list this before. It was awesome. The fish was served whole and was grilled with olive oil and salt. Again, this dish was good. It did have a lot of bones, but what can you expect. The food, wine, bread, and the mini dessert sample are all A+ Blacks has the BEST seared scallops. This is the only restaurant that I can think of that serves seared scallops. They are soft not chewy. The filet here is delicious. For some reason the meat in MD taste better, than the meat in California. Every bite has much more flavor than the meat in CA. What a gem!! Everything from the food, to the wine, to the service was excellent. I had the steak frites that came with a chimichurri sauce on a bed of asparagus. I'm not even being dramatic when I say this is the best steak I've ever had. It was so tender and perfectly cooked to my liking. Other members of my party ordered the pork chop and salmon and they said their dishes were also amazing. If you're going to splurge on a nice dinner, I definitely recommend this place over, say, Mon ami gabi. Similar price point but the food is of better quality here in my opinion. read more

This is really a 4.5 Stopped by the other night for some dinner after a movie. There was a wait, so I decided to put my name down and try my luck at the first come, first seated bar area. After about 15-20 mins, I swooped on a table. Yes! I'll echo what many people have said here before - get the mussels! I got the malted ones which included bacon. The portion was huge for an appetizer, the mussels were cooked perfectly, and the broth was slurpable. Ha. No, I didn't do it. I did, however, use my spoon to eat it like soup. For $17, it was a bargain. The accompanying frites were ok, but a little limp. Gotta hate that ;) The oysters were also standouts here. I tried one each of the 3 premium ones at $2.95 each - and they were well worth the price. The antipasti was decent - cheeses were great, the meats were good, but I could've done without the anchovies. I'm ok with anchovies but these were particularly fishy to me. Great Lunch, quick and comfortable Limited menu, so Blacks isn't often a consensus restaurant choice. Nice comfortable space with room for comfort. Clean restaurant with a nice space, pretty silverware and quality finishes to the food and place. Little ketchup bowls brought out for each order of fries. The food was better than expected. Great food, great service! My husband and I joined my parents here last night for dinner and really enjoyed our meals. We started with charcuterie and oysters, both of which were fantastic. My dad got the pork chop, Mom the special salad and scallops appetizer, and my husband and I shared the tuna and the pork chop. The kitchen split up our order for us, which I thought was a really nice touch and prevents the awkward passing of pieces of food across the table. The pork chop was a resounding hit, and I loved the tuna. I also highly recommend the ruby slipper cocktail - the grapefruit juice is fresh squeezed and super fresh. I do wish the inside was a little less dark/stuffy. Had I not just walked in from a beautiful day, it could have been middle of winter from all I could tell. Update: I've tried a few new things! For some reason I have been into virgin mojitos, theirs is the BEST! It also comes with a cute sugar rock candy stick. I also tried their prawns which were grilled with herbs and my choice of sauce. SO good. They also had a special flat bread with bacon jam, blue cheese and some type of beef tips. I am not a huge fan of blue cheese or beef but this, opened my eyes to new things. Their side of mushrooms were pretty good too! Blacks is the place to expand your pallet. Love this place. The ambiance inside is classy and welcoming, there are plenty of tables (they have two large dining rooms), the service is attentive and excellent, and their food is both innovative and delicious! Between the two of us, we ordered the following: -Seafood Gumbo -Duck Nachos -Rib Eye Flatbread Yum! I can personally attest that the seafood gumbo was wonderful. It was both filling and full of delicious flavors. It was slightly spicy, which I loved. They were generous with their portions of shrimp, mussels, and andouille sausage! I tried a bit of the duck nachos and rib eye flatbread as well, and both were delicious. Great prices, great flavors, great portion, and great experience all around! I met a friend here for dinner and drinks back in October. I sat at the bar while I waited for her. It was clean and not overcrowded. I had a $ 15 glass of sparkling Rosé. For dinner we split a cheeseburger and the fish of the day. It was well prepared and a truly good quality burger. Parking was free in the nearby garage, and steps from the restaurant. We were seated at a rather less than ideal spot by the door and in the bar area, but my friend had requested an outdoor table and so we waited for one to open up. The courtyard was nice and the weather perfect to enjoy a long dinner catching up. Total for my dinner including tip was $ 109.07 (we also had drinks). I would go back again for sure. read more

As always, it was a great looking place, went down on Tuesday, so wasn't particularly busy took someone on the first date and was excited to show her the menu and go down the list from oysters to appetizers to entrées to desserts, while sharing some creative conversation that pairs with everything. This is one of my favorite Bethesda lunch spots. The food is well-prepared and the menu is unique. The Menu Salmon with Orzo and Veggies My favorite lunch entree is the salmon with orzo and some veggies. The salmon is always fresh and perfectly executed. It's not a huge dish, which is perfect for lunch. Just the right portion for lunch so you don't fall asleep at your desk afterwards. Soups I love their soups - the beef stew, gazpacho and the clam chowder were my favorites so far. I love seeing what their specials are each week. Salads If you like tuna, I swapped out seared tuna in their salmon salad and loved it! The fish was well-prepared and the salad was big. Sandwiches When my friend and I split some food, we tried the chicken sandwich. I think of all the items on their menu, it was the most boring. It was fine, but next time I'll try out something more exciting. Risotto They have a different daily risotto, and it's always fun to try out something new. We had one with shrimp, mushrooms, asparagus and other veggies. It was delicious! It made me realize I want to try out their seasonal risottos more. Lunch Menu If you're in the mood for a lot of food, I love their lunch menu. You can get a soup/salad with a main entree and then a dessert. It's WAY too much food for me, but it was a good deal when I wanted to mix and match a soup with an entree. Ambiance The restaurant has a relaxed vibe. People go for work lunches or with friends - it caters to all. One side of the restaurant has lots of light and hightop booths. That's my favorite side because it's bright and inviting. There's also a side that's more dark and formal, but I prefer to sit in the light. They also have outdoor seating, but with the Marriott construction across the street, it's too loud out there. However, there's no noise inside, so don't be afraid to venture in, despite the dust and noise from outside. Final Verdict This is one of my favorite spots for lunch. I love going back to see what new specials they have. The food is always well-prepared and I love that they have seasonal veggies and other plates. If you like seafood, this is a great spot! When the wait was too long at woodmont grill, We decided to give this place a try. We were seated quickly ( receptionist came after a min) since the place wasn't busy. Seating is pretty spread out, ambience was ok. We could see the kitchen from our table. I chose different wine since they were out of the one I selected (should have let me know before). Food came out (ordered roasted chicken) no sides. Portion was good. Food was surprisingly good. My friend ordered grilled organic salmon, even she liked her food. Food portion was small compared to mine. We had tiramisu and it was so good. We enjoyed the whole time when we were there, had good laughs even got louder(not extremely) after 2 glasses of wine. I've only ever been here for the Sunday brunch and it's an impressive affair with lots of good food, but I'm not 100% sure it's worth the price tag. For a special occasion it's fun though. I seem to end up here when my dad is celebrating something and the trick is just to forget about the price tag and enjoy it. The brunch consists of three parts. There a somewhat normal--if extravagant breakfast buffet with eggs, quiche, prime rib, salads and all the normal things you'd expect. They're all yummy and the trick is to make a first pass to find what's good and not eat too much, then go back for what you like. The section part is the raw bar in the front of the place, which has all kinds of delicious raw seafood. I think you have to pay extra for it and it just depends what you're feeling like and what you like whether it's worth it. One time I think most of my food came from there. A second time I think I passed it up because I wasn't in the mood. The last part is the desserts, which aren't quite as good as the first two parts in my opinion, but more dessert-focused people may feel differently. Again, nice, yummy, fancy place. A very we run restaurant, we shared spinach salad with candied pecans and fresh oranges, very fresh and very good, followed by oysters rockefeller which were good, and then one of us had scallops which were excellent,great presentation and one of us had Char which was excellent and done to perfection. Special salad of the day couldn't best Giant, added scallops for $19 for 3, they were awful/tasteless. 3 really? Maybe bring your own scallops,, byos, from whole foods! Servers, service, ambiance, food, is plebian at patrician prices. They're in a deep, dark rut. Whatever the wait is at Woodmont Grill endure it - 3x better. Attractive dining room; nasty, smelly bathroom. Nicely presented food; overly formal, officious wait staff. There's nothing I don't love about Black's, and it's shamelessly become my favorite restaurant group for an upscale yet approachable dining experience. Service is always great, and my recent visit here was also an example of how courteous and engaging the staff is. The bartender made sure we had the utensils, condiments, and drinks we needed. The host (young man) was extremely nice and passionate about the raw bar. Most importantly, the oyster shucker on our visit yesterday was fast and skilled - making sure there were no shards or broken bellies on the oysters and clams we ordered from the raw bar. 5 stars!! The quality and taste in the food is why they will always have my loyalty. There is no other place I can always guarantee will deliver on freshness and execution on seafood. The raw bar selections, this time we had oysters from Bay, Washington, Maine, and top neck clams were so fresh and they had such a delightfully large variety, we really enjoyed trying out everything and comparing how they tasted. As always, addie's mussels are a must here. Never had a bad batch. They are always fresh and plump. They've tweaked the recipe for their sauce and it's become better and better. Their calamari is also a delightful app - we got it grilled and it has a great herb and evoo drizzle, smoky wood-fires taste, with a side of olive dip that was fantastic plastered onto a slice of bread. YUM!! As always for entree, seasonal fish is my recommendation - broiled, fried, or seared, always fresh and delicious, especially the rockfish is a favorite. Met some friends for dinner to celebrate a birthday. Ordered the calamari and duck nachos to share for appetizers and both were really good. The calamari was actually crispy, something most places can't pull off. The nachos were kind of constructed for you to grab a chip and the toppings will come with it; unlike your standard bar food where they just throw everything on top of the chips and you can't get a little taste of everything without creating a mess. For my entree I order the bacon cheeseburger and it was excellent. Cooked to order and very flavorful; I loved the char on the burger while also juicy and med rare. The fries were meh; fresh cut, shoestring type, but soggy and limp. Probably should upgrade to another side next time. Service was good and quick. Came to Black's for a celebratory dinner with my partner on 7/28/21. We got a dozen oysters, pan seared salmon, and pan seared scallops. For drinks, I had a rose and my partner had a cosmo. The oysters were fresh and delicious, we really enjoyed them as a starter. For my meal, I had the pan seared scallops and they were truly phenomenal. The scallops were cooked perfectly and they were accompanied by garlic mashed potatoes, rainbow chard, and crawfish blanc. I loved everything about my dish and I didn't leave a single thing on my plate! I enjoyed the sauce a lot, it paired well with the mashed potatoes and scallops. My partner's dish was also very good. The salmon was delicious and the skin was very crispy. It came with polenta and spinach, which complemented the fish well. My partner's dish was a little bit too salty but other than that, it was really good. Aside from the food, the ambiance inside the restaurant is very chic and the staff is very nice. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here and will be back again! read more

Dinner here was not good on several levels. In my opinion prices are far to high for the fare offered. Most entries are ala carte which I did not appreciate. For example the $45 filet mignon came with no sides at all. Service was mediocre at best. My companion's meal, $35 prawns (with heads attached) was cold when served. Our drinks were not recognizable. I drink top shelf but was served something entirely different. My companion's wine did not resemble anything familiar either. All in all, not a good experience. I expected better. We left hungry & dissatisfied after spending $165. What a waste of money. read more
