Thank you to Caruso's Grocery for hosting my granddaughter's 16th birthday dinner. A huge shout out to Patrick, the event coordinator from Caruso's who helped me in every aspect of planning this special event. The food was delicious. The group was given a choice of appetizers: meatballs, basil and tomato caprese salad, dinner salad, or garlic bread. Each of the appetizers were better than the next. The girls shared the meatballs, garlic bread, and caprese salad. Thank you to our server for bringing out gluten free bread for one of our guests with a gluten allergy. Our main dishes was the shrimp scampi,which was full of flavor and so tasty. There were several of us who ordered the shrimp scampi and you could hear a chorus of oohs and aah's. We loved every bite. I am pleased to share that Caruso's has gluten free pasta for guests with gluten allergies. And, the gluten free pasta was scrumptious. The birthday girl had chicken parmigiana and a side of spaghetti. She really enjoyed her meal. Another, guest had the penne pasta and she loved hers too. There portions were very generous. We also had a guest order the Caesar salad with shrimp. It came out with dressing, when the dressing was supposed to be on the side, but our waiter was quick to remedy that. The ambiance is lovely and reminds me of my grandmother's home in Little Italy. It is old world Italian with comfortable seating. I know it was a busy night, but the one fly in our ointment was our server. There was too much of a lag between courses, and main dishes came out of the kitchen at different times. Also, our gluten free guest had to sit and watch while others ate cake because her ice cream sundae was no where to be found. It finally made it to the table, but I felt badly for this young lady. I know our server was swamped with guests. Hopefully, next time a large party is on the schedule, they can lighten the load for that server. Came here recently for lunch Sunday. They have two sections inside and we sat in the bar area. You can order off both of Caruso's and Owen's food menus. Bar area is very chill. Food was very good! To start, we tried the Garlic Bread Quattro Formaggi which was so flavorful they even had fresh garlic inside the bread. We got two pasta dishes: Chicken Parmigiana and Spicy Neapolitan Ragu, both generous portions, very well flavored and overall delicious! Our cocktails were great too. The restaurant was busy on a Saturday night. It was loud, which management likes because it gives a sense of patrons having a good time. The walls were an homage of old photos with an eclectic and whimsical feel. Service was excellent. A variety of staff kept checking to see if everything was satisfactory. It was. Our salad was the tomato panzenella special. The ingredients were fresh and the vinaigrette was just right. A complimentary bread basket with olive oil and balsamic vinegar options was available. The glass oil dispenser was coated in oil making it messy to grasp. The bread was not fresh and not exciting. I had the eggplant rollatini. It had a generous flavorful red sauce and the herb ricotta filling added a nice contrast. My only complaint would be how thin the eggplant slices were. More eggplant please. My wife loved her linguini and clams. I couldn't taste it because I have a clam allergy, but she loved it. Someone also got rigatoni and enjoyed it. The generous portions left us too full for dessert. This solid Italian restaurant has good food at a good price and needs to be on your list next time you feel like Italian. read more

My wife HATES when I take her to Caruso's Grocery. Why? It's not the ambience - Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin crooning softly in the background. It's not the service - friendly wait staff who know the menu inside and out. It's not the food - this last time we got the calamari (perfectly fried, crispy and tender), I got the chicken parmesan - a nice flat chicken filet, but still tender and tasty with a nice side of spaghetti, and she got the caesar salad with sliced grilled chicken breast. The food, as usual was fantastic. But my wife hates it when the waiter brings us the canoli (we were celebrating two events, so he brought us two canolis with little candles) and I inevitably say, "Leave the gun, take the canoli!" before I dig into the perfect crispy shell and soft, creamy filling. Usually she says something like "You're lucky there's no gun here" while she's rolling her eyes. Thank you, Caruso's - since your food is so good, my wife tolerates my Godfather quotes. OMG!! This experience was amazing. The ambiance was great. It made you feel like you were in an authentic classic Italian restaurant in Italy. The lights dim, classic Italian music playing in the background with great pictures on the wall of their history. The service was impeccable. Our waitress was very knowledgeable, friendly, and very attentive. Since it was our first time at this restaurant we asked her what items she suggested on the menu and went with her suggestions which did not disappoint. The food was delicious. I ordered the trout piccata which was very flavorful with different components. I also ordered the linguini on the side which was cooked to perfection. We also orders the calamari which was the best calamari I've had in a very long time. The food was simply amazing. Overall, I had a wonderful experience. Between the ambiance, service, and food it left very little to be desired. If you are in the area, I would 100% recommend trying this restaurant if you want an authentic Italian dinner. Caruso's Grocery has officially become our weekly spot, and the reason starts with Valeria, the General Manager. We had visited a while back and didn't have the best experience. Instead of brushing it off, Valeria personally invited us back -- and wow, what a difference. That kind of accountability alone speaks volumes, but the experience that followed truly blew us away. From the moment we walked in, Valeria made everything feel warm, welcoming, and genuinely special. She was friendly, approachable, and such a pleasure to talk to. While we were enjoying our meal, we watched her doing everything -- setting tables, clearing tables, helping servers, checking on guests. Having worked in restaurants myself, I can confidently say she is the kind of manager you dream of having. Rare, hands-on, compassionate, and clearly leading by example. An absolute delight. And the food? Incredible. Truly outstanding. We had: * Seafood Diablo (extra spice) -- bold, perfectly cooked, and packed with flavor * Chicken Alfredo -- rich, comforting, and done just right * Meatballs -- unbelievably good * And a special limoncello shot that was the perfect finishing touch -- so refreshing and delicious Everything across the board was excellent and more than made up for our first visit. The place is a hidden restaurant behind Owen's. Owen's was excellent for drinking as we waited for our seats. Once inside, I realized there were a lot of free seats but probably not flexible enough to move the tables around to accommodate their customers. The server was excellent. The menu was decent. The appetizers excelled with crispy calamari and ripe tomato. The pasta however was too heavily flavored as if to cover up non-fresh ingredients. Made a reservation on Opentable for evening birthday dinner for 2. There's a parking garage next door with free parking up to 2 hours so that's great. Service was awesome, our server Rob level set expectations as soon as we sat down and let us know the chef was in house and marking all pasta dishes to order. I asked about a few of the summer specials and he was able to provide great recommendations. All our times came out within a reasonable amount of time. We ordered: Fried calamari Shrimp scampi Arugula pesto orecchiette with chicken sausage Espresso martinis with Kahluha Bottle of Aragosta Prosecco Everything was delicious, very fresh, and rich with flavor. Prices were reasonable and the portions were big enough to share. They went out of their way to recognize my partner's birthday, first with a happy birthday sign and closing with a celebratory cannoli with a candle. The chicken PARMIGIANA left me soooo satisfied! best meal I've ever tried at this restaurant by FAR. the semolina dusted calamari was also very delicious. You should really start with the calamari served with traditional marinara and bonus lemon aioli. We loved the aioli so much we had to ask for more! I have a tendency to order salmon no matter where I go, simply because I like fish. I was pleased to see trout on the menu and I did not regret my order. We had a 6:30 reservation on Saturday and arrived around 6:15. After checking in, the hostess told us to either head to the bar or come back when it was exactly 6:30. A bit odd, right? It got stranger when we saw four other parties being seated before us. I really blame the hostess for this, as when I returned to check in later and a different staff member was at the desk, he seated us immediately. I even overheard him asking her why we were just sitting there, so -1 star for that weird interaction. The food was good! We started with calamari, which I liked, and the pasta was also great. Is it something I've never tasted before? Probably not, but it was still delicious. The drinks were fantastic - I'd definitely recommend coming here for happy hour. I love the original Caruso's Grocery but the food here was not up to par and the service was bad. I visited for restaurant week and also for a special occasion. The restaurant week menu had three courses for $40, with three options for each course (plus two other entree options for upcharge). The regular menu was also available. You can also order from the Owen's Tavern beer list (extremely large). We had the garlic bread (normally $12.50), tomato panzanella (a special, listed for $15.75), chicken parm ($26.50), penne alla vodka ($24.50), cannoli (1 piece, not on regular menu, let's estimate $6), and mini strawberry sundae (normally $13.75 for the non-mini version, let's estimate $6). So was restaurant week worth it? Sort of. You basically get the dessert for free. The garlic bread and chicken parm were very similar (if not identical) to the ones at OG Caruso's -- no complaints there. I would have liked some more spice in the chicken parm. The panzanella was lame. It was more like a salad with some tomatoes and croutons than a panzanella. It had leafy greens and some cucumber. It did not seem like heirloom tomatoes -- they were all average red grape tomatoes sliced in half. It felt cheap. The penne was fine; I liked it more than my companion. Dessert was disappointing. The cannoli was fine but the filling warmer than I liked. The sundae was half melted and the least attractive dessert I have ever been served at a restaurant in DC. Take a look at the photo and judge for yourself -- that's how it was served. I would have sent it back if we hadn't waited so long for dessert and just wanted to leave. Now, the service. Things started off well enough. The host accommodated our request to sit outside. Staff was a little slow to acknowledge us, bring water, and take our orders, but the first two courses came out quickly. Things really took a nosedive with dessert. We waited awhile and finally flagged down our waiter to ask about it -- it was clear she forgot to put it in. We finally get it about 30 minutes after we finished our entrees -- unacceptable. Then, the sundae was terrible, but we just wanted to leave. Our whole meal lasted about 2 hours for two people with a basic order -- 30 min longer than it should have been. That wasn't the only misstep. Staff barely checked in with us. We had to ask for a water refill. Staff didn't acknowledge the special occasion (although the host did). At one point, a server came by with a check for a different table (before we got dessert). We politely sent him away -- a few minutes later he returns: "Are you SURE you didn't get the trout and burger? My manager sent me over here." Yikes. To top it off, one of the indoor TVs near us was playing a "mental decline" infomercial on repeat. This is just not the kind of attention to detail or service that you expect. The only reason I visited this location is because I was in the area and I love the OG Caruso's. Needless to say, I won't visit this one again. A small note on the special occasion recognition: they gave us a pre-printed "thank you" card (not signed) for a complimentary mimosa on our next brunch visit. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand: a coupon, great! On the other hand, it feels like a tacky way to get you to come back and spend more money later. When I come to your restaurant for a special occasion, I want to celebrate then, not at some random brunch in the future. Not to mention plenty of people visit who don't live close enough to visit again. read more

Absolutely amazing! My review is without pics (except dessert) because I was soooo excited to eat and forgot Guess I have to go back and eat again LOL But this place was great. I heard about this place just recently and my daughter asked to go for her last meal home before starting college this week. It was restaurant week at Pike and Rose, so I chose that menu. I got the garlic Caesar, Chicken Parmigiana and the crème brûlée. We also split the calamari and bread. Not a single complaint. Service was excellent and it felt like I was in Italy! Finally tried Caruso's and it really does live up to the hype. The interior is very elegant and I really liked that the seating options were adequately spaced so that the restaurant didn't feel cramped at all. Some restaurants like to maximize the number of tables, which can be uncomfortable for patrons on a busy night, but the set up at Caruso's really lends to an intimate date night. The service was excellent. Everyone that assisted us was attentive and polite and our server was friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. I wanted to know if they had any wines on the sweeter side and our server asked the bartenders to make me a sangria, which was not on the drink menu but turned out to be delicious! The pasta was some of the best I've ever had - perfect fresh, chewy texture. Flavorful sauces. The Alfredo is a must try - it's more like a truffle mushroom pasta than a genuine Alfredo, but it was so rich and comforting. Came to Caruso's with my boyfriend for our valentine's dinner and it was amazing! The ambiance is intimate and cozy. Our server was very nice and offered suggestions on what we should order. We started off with a caesar salad & calamari. The salad was really good and the calamari was a bit overcooked but it still tasted good. For our entrees, we had the chicken parmigiana with vodka sauce and caruso's alfredo with shrimp. They were both delicious and cooked perfectly. Now the tiramisu... My first visit to the DC location did not go so well, but I'm glad I gave the Pike and Rose location a shot during winter restaurant week. Made reservations on a random Tuesday and we were welcomed in and shown to our table upon entry. Our lovely waitress, Agu, provided excellent customer service and insured our orders were right. I was suffering through "dry January" and she suggested their delicious strawberry basil, lemonade, which was excellent. For dinner selections we had the Caprese salad, pork meatballs, roasted garlic Caesar salad, which were absolutely fantastic. The Caprese was especially delicious because of the imported tomatoes Those tomatoes are an extreme wow factor as they are wonderfully delicious. For the main entrée, we ordered chicken Parmesan and the baked gnocchi. The chicken Parmesan as you can imagine was straightforward and delicious, but the baked gnocchi? OMG.GGGG. The favorite profile was absolutely incredible. The herbs used were fresh and impactful the bits of mozzarella and ricotta cheese. Bits into the dish were absolutely incredible and the slivers of sliced garlic were absolutely delicious! Hands-down one of the best Italian dishes I've ever had. For dessert, we ordered the orange version of crème brûlée (I forget what it was called on the menu), and that was absolutely delicious. The other dessert wasnt as great (nutella cannoli). My wife didn't care for it too much and she said it was too sweet. On a positive note, she said the cannoli shells were perfectly crisp, as they should be. The lovely AGM, Derrick, came around to all of the tables, including our to check on how our food was an overall experience, and I was glad to share with him-It was excellent!! Caruso's elevated spin on Italian-American cuisine appears all over social media and local food publications. My wife and I visited the more accessible Bethesda location in the Pike and Rose development. Unlike the original DC location, we obtained reservations with relative ease less than one week out from our desired date. Also, the parking situation was a pleasant contrast to the city in that ample, complimentary 2 hour garage parking is readily available. The Bethesda location is also home to a sister concept called "Owen's Tavern." It's a bit of a weird set up with the somewhat drab Owen's space greeting you upon entering and the fancier, more fun Caruso's dining room in the back. One advantage to this slightly odd model is that guests at Caruso's can also order from the Owen's food and drink menu, which presents far more options that the DC location. Notably, the bar offers an ample selection of excellent craft beers, which I highly enjoyed with my food. My wife and I chose to enjoy the weather on the patio. Our waiter greeted us promptly and explained the menu situation. He also noted all the food was made to order and that, subsequently, substitutions were encouraged if desired. We started with an appetizer from the Owen's menu and ordered two pasta dishes. Our appetizer, the chicken parmesan sliders, arrived quickly. Three cute sandwiches composed of fluffy brioche, crispy chicken cutlet, and a restrained amount of cheese were served alongside a gravy boat full of vodka sauce. The bites were flavorful and comforting and started our meal on a positive note. Our pastas arrived shortly thereafter. I opted for the baked cavatelli and my wife the spaghetti and meatballs with a substitution of bucatini for the spaghetti and ricotta cheese for the parmesan. My pasta dish had the appropriate balance of hearty, slow cooked red sauce flavor with meaty, zesty chunks of both meatballs and Italian sausage. The cavatelli themselves possessed the ideal fluffy yet toothsome texture. My wife enjoyed her dish too, as the bucatini possessed a nice chew and easily soaked up the fresh, classic tomato sauce and creamy ricotta. We ended with an excellent tiramisu for dessert. The ladyfingers tasted well-soaked and the mascarpone had a light, perfect level of sweetness. Overall, we highly enjoyed our meal. That being said, Caruso's earns four rather than five stars for two reasons. First, we found the portions slightly skimpy for the price and given the fact that this, ultimately, is a red sauce Italian joint where generous helpings are the norm. Secondly, while our waiter encouraged substitutions, we were shocked to find that my wife's slightly customized pasta dish was 1.5x the menu price on our final bill. This increase felt excessive as we essentially swapped only the pasta shape. The manager fortunately addressed our concern and reduced the surcharge, but the disconnect between offering customizations while pricing them highly sat poorly. Nonetheless, we will likely return soon as the food tasted great and we dug the beer selections. Caruso's is a great, convenient option for fresh pasta without trekking to the city and for an excellent selection of craft brews and other bar bites. Just watch your wallet with the substitutions. read more

Took my Mom to Caruso's for lunch yesterday. The restaurant itself has 2-3 rooms all decorated in authentic old world Italian style with on theme relaxing music very dimly lit - awesome vibe! Gabi was our waitress and she was amazing. We had the Calamari appetizer and it was hot and crispy and seasoned perfectly - the best we have had anywhere by far. It comes with 2 sauces - red marinara sauce light and slightly sweet and a garlicky thick white sauce that was perfect. I had the Ceasar Salad with Grilled Chicken. The salad was small for a full lunch portion and I took off one star because the Chicken lacked flavor and tasted like it was cooked with old oil - hard to describe the taste but was definitely very off. Liked the dressing and crutons tho. My Mom got the Shrimp Scampi which had 5 large Shrimp seasoned well with light chili flakes and a lemony butter sauce - very light on the garlic was a good surprise - this sauce was more lemony vs garlickly which we loved. It was mixed with tagliatelle pasta which was cooked perfect just wish there was more of it. Menu isn't big but there are other dishes we can't wait to come back to try. We had a great experience. When we walked in, we had a reservation and was seated immediately. I wasn't happy with our seats so they happily switched us and we kept our waitress, Agu, who was amazing! She was super sweet and knowledgeable. She also gave us complimentary champagne for our anniversary and some kind of lemon shot at the end. It was delicious! I ordered the Alfredo with chicken and my fiance ordered the chicken parmesan. This place never disappoints! I have been coming here for the past two years on New Year's Eve for a late dinner. The food is delicious. The place is decorated to pretty for the holidays and as an added bonus. You can sit at Owen's tavern for a few cocktails prior to sitting down for dinner. The veal piccata is always to perfection. Their chicken parm is a must have and what's an Italian restaurant without a delicious tiramisu for the closer. Dont miss out on this gem. Reservations recommended. It was a perfect evening to be outside and enjoying this great weather. Because of this I made a reservation for outdoor seating. We had the best waiter Alex. He was very accommodating and answered any questions we had about the menu. I ordered the Seafood Fra Divolo with fettuccine. The spice was just right for me but if you're a spicy type of person you can request they turn up the heat. I got a side house salad with this that came with a Chantilly vinaigrette. Btw, there are no options for dressing. For me I love a good vinaigrette, but my husband would have preferred something else. We didn't opt for dessert, but Alex told us he couldn't let us leave without a little dessert on our anniversary. He brought out two mini cannoli's. That was such a special touch that I really appreciated. He also presented us with a card for complimentary mimosas if we came back for brunch. Another nice touch. I will say the menu was kind of limited in its offerings. My husband loves meatballs but there was some only pork and he doesn't eat pork or seafood that are scavengers such as shrimp. They only had 1 fish offering and he wasn't feeling that either. He ended up eating a house salad. All in all the food was pleasing to my palate and the vibe was chill.
