In town for business and I know, this area is surrounded by amazing bbq joints, but I wanted to start my first time with the original. We had a late lunch, so the line was at the door. At first, the aroma once inside was great. I had the moist brisket, ribs and Mac/cheese. 1st - brisket. It's was moist, flavorful and just the right bark. 2nd - baby back ribs. Amazing flavor and pulled off the bone. 3rd - Mac/cheese great flavor with a decent crust. Overall - 4/5 A great atmosphere, palate pleasing taste. Can I possibly give it 10 stars? I wish I could but, this is a solid max 5 stars. Hands down best Beef ribs I have ever had! Smoke ring, tenderness, meat vs fat content, flavor etc all . The line was out the door so I made a telephone order to go! The candied yams and green beens were side perfections to complement the ribs. The ribs were so large and meaty I could only eat one. Hands down best BBQ I have had so far, even with places I have visited in Kansas City as a youth. Don't get Black's BBQ confused with Terry Black's BBQ. I don't get here often but when I do, Blacks' is my Lockhart BBQ stop. I think it's the best here in the barbecue capital of Texas. One reason is that they serve sauce and you don't have to eat your meal on just butcher paper. Oh yeah, the food is also very good. Recently I stopped by for dinner on a Friday night. There were maybe 15 diners inside (which is so sad during this era of Covid) so it was easy to get in and order my food. I asked for 1/2 chicken with 1/4 lb. of moist brisket with sides of beans and potato salad. I almost ordered one of those massive beef ribs instead like I have in the past. They are oh so good! I paid and then took my heavy tray to find a seat which was easy to do with the sparse crowd. I noticed that they have expanded the dining area since my last visit several years ago. The brisket was flavorful, tender and just damn good. Ditto on the chicken. They were two very good meats. The mustard based potato salad was cool, creamy and a nice palate cleanser. While the beans were ok, they are not my favorite using those ranch style beans. I need to remember that on my next visit and try another side dish. The Texas BBQ game has greatly improved over the past 14 years ago since my first visit. Back then you almost had to come to Lockhart to get the best 'cue. Now great bbq is more readily available in more cities like Houston. Even Black's has expanded with storefronts in other towns. However if you come to Lockhart, you have to come to Black's. read more

The last stop my friends and I made on the BBQ trail near Lockhart and so glad that we decided to end here. Also, definitely check out the website "Texas BBQ trail" to see just how many great BBQ joints there are to try in the area. My friends and I have taken several trips just to try all of the amazing BBQ that is out here. Blacks BBQ deserves a 5 star regardless of anything else because their Giant Beef Ribs are just out of this world good. They are ginormous and more than enough for a couple of people. The flavor is everything that you've have been dreaming of for BBQ. Blackened skin and tender meat underneath with such a beautifully salty smoky flavor. These Beef Ribs are unique in that not many BBQ joints make them, and boy do they make them right. The Brisket and sausage were good, definitely above average, but I honestly could have skipped those just to have more room for the Giant Beef Ribs. The Pecan Cobbler was a hidden gem. Gooey, with crisp crust, and not too sweet. Perfect paired alongside the BBQ. In addition, the staff were more than friendly and asked a couple of times, how we were doing and how the BBQ was. Very nice meat The Giant rib was beyond expectations. Definitely prefer the pork ribs and the giant beef rib. Chicken and the sausage was fine. Cole slaw was sweet which is the way I prefer. Potato salad was pretty good. I wish we could've tried turkey but they were sold out. We tried all the three desserts, peach cobbler, pecan cobbler, and banana pudding. The manager I worked with was super helpful and knowledgeable to make sure I had a nice mix of food at the right quantities for all of my guests to try. Visited Texas for BBQ and to compare: Franklin's VS. Black's. I have a clear winner! Both were just mouth watering BBQ, but Black's just have that extra.... Extra.... Je ne sais quio. Yup that's it. Been coming here to the Original Black's (est. 1932) since I was a kid. My Dad strongly preferred Black's, and so do I. For me, while I'll eat barbecue at other places, there's no place better than Black's - and if I'm within 50 miles of Lockhart, I'm here! Now with the 4th generation of Edgar Black's family running the place, it's still the same as when Edgar was here - and he's got to be proud. I always get the black eyed peas and banana pudding with my plate, and also ALWAYS 1/4 lb of the fatty brisket - melt in your mouth tender. I also always get something else depending on what I'm in the mood for: Black's famous jalapeño sausage, foot-long pork ribs, the smoked turkey, or even a beef rib (to SHARE - beef ribs are GINORMOUS). Since the pandemic, they have expanded the seating area and constructed 2 new mens and Women's restrooms - with 4 modern stalls. Such a delightful upgrade from the closet-sized bathroom that served customers here for years. Black's is pilgrimage-worthy Central TX barbecue, and now that they have outposts in Austin, New Braunfels, and San Marcos, you don't HAVE to come to Lockhart - but why would you not?? What a lovely city Lockhart is... the original Black's located here is the one I am told I needed to go to due to it being the 'original' and I gotta admit, it was worth the drive. The waft of aroma emanating from the side of the building was mesmerizing for me. The morning we showed up around 1045a there was no line and we were the 1st customers of the day so we got a lot of time to talk to the nice folks working here. We talked bbq and the location and it's history. We ordered brisket of course & it was delicious, not quite the best brisket of our four day bbq adventures but one of the better ones. No sauce needed here. The sides were okay, I realized that Ohio bbq joints have spoiled us with their sides. I'm just going to stick with the brisket because it's just that good in Texas. read more

Finally, a BBQ place that is on par with Bill Miller's and Dickies...he says tongue in cheek. Seriously folks, if you are giving this place 4 or 5 stars you might want to spend a bit more time in Lockhart visiting better. Visited here few days ago, and it was marginal at very best. Meat was without flavor and tough, sausage was meh, and the potato salad tasted like it was out of a Reser's Foods plastic tub. Cafeteria sides looked a bit on the tired and ick side. But the thing that disappointed me the most as I had forgotten that TERRY Blacks is just down the street (and was open), and had gone to Blacks when other places in Lockhart closed on Tuesday... SO...to the Lockhart mecca folks...Blacks is NOT on the list of all time great BBQ joints in central Texas...not even close. read more

We stopped by Black's on the way to Gonzalez for a family road trip. There was no line because of the state 50% max occupancy mandate during the Covid-19 panic. Super nice staff and great place! We sampled the moist brisket, turkey sandwich, pecan cobbler and potato salad. The brisket had flavorful bark with strong salt and pepper notes. The turkey sandwich was smoky and moist. Pecan cobble is brilliant. The potato salad was mustard based and fine. Really good and I'm the ballpark of Millers in Belton or Franklins. Definitely one of the elites and close to the top of the pack. Overall, we'd go back for fantastic family experience. read more

I grew up working in a family meat market in Louisiana decades ago. I weighed my "1/2lb" pork ribs. It was less than a 1/3 pound. We always sold bbq as a cooked weight back in the 1980's. But with 4 end pieces I basically got two good ribs, a far cry from 1/2 a pound. Total rip off. read more

Actually have not been here to this original location for several years and I must say that it has gone downhill in food quality and quantity. Just had a chopped brisket sandwich and the first thing I noticed was the bun was stale to the point of getting hard. Their bbq sauce had a new "unusual "flavor that was not good. Amount of brisket on the sandwich was maybe 3 ounces at most and was 9.99! In short, next time I'm in Lockhart I'll be sure to go to Smitty's or elsewhere. Big disappointment. Post script: This location was good enough to call me and apologize for the less than satisfactory experience that I had today. The manager made up for it by reimbursing my credit card and then he agreed that the staff needed to be made aware of a few things. I heard so much about this place, I had high expectations. Unfortunately they were not met. Prices are high and portions are low on the sides. The corn was very good, all 3 tablespoons for $3.25. It seemed like we were rushed through even though we came about 8pm and there was no line. The gent cutting the meat was good and explained things. He said to the cashier that the little ring of sausage was on the house because this was my first time there. For two of us we got a beef rib, 3 pork ribs, 1/2 lb lean brisket and original sausage. Beef rib was terrific but not worth $33, and lean brisket was ok, sausage and ribs were mediocre. Another rub was they charged for pickled jalapeños. Most other places include it in the condiments. Not worth $95. There are many bbq places in Lockhart. I would try them and skip Black's. read more

I honestly think it's hard to review restaurants right now because of this crisis, with low staff and low customers. That being said, we enjoy the food. Not sure if it lived up to it height. We decided to dine and they gentleman working in the seating area was super friendly. The rest of the staff was not. My bf literally was like, shoot I just got held at to pick my sides. I know people are stressed right now but customer service does go a long way. They are set up pretty good to keep thinking safe and clean. The brisket had great flavor, however, it was super salty. We got the fatty brisket and the outside was just a tad dry but the inside was pretty moist. The ribs were ok. The sides: black eye peas were under cooked, Mac and cheese was lacking flavor, green beans was good, baked beans was good (if you like ranch style, i like more of a sweet baked bean), and the mashed potatoes and gravy was sooo good.. that gravy was delish! Well worth the drive from Bastrop to come here. The scenery before you get there is beautiful. Baked beans, coleslaw and lots of pickles overflowed the plate before hitting the meat. So this Sunday, we decided to make a journey to Lockhart and sample bbq. The first stop was Kruetz's market - second stop Black's. Last time I was here, I was very disappointed. So with the little trepidation, I ordered a beef rib and some turkey. The beef rib was huge - 1 1/4 lbs - very tasty - I should have used my better judgment and asked the cutter To cut it in half at least, it was just way too much. I had high hopes for the turkey, but was disappointed, it was robbery and not very flavorful. Having just had some turkey that melted in my mouth, I was expecting more of the same, and came up short. My partners in crime, ordered some brisket, and I was pleasantly surprised, it was much better than my last visit, moist and flavorful. We saw all the signs all over the place and so we had to try it. We walked in Saturday night at 730pm and it was not busy at all. The lady at the cold bar explained to us how the prices work. Seemed a little pricey but I was willing to give it a try. We got Mac n cheese and potatoes salad. The Mac n cheese was tasteless, we had to add salt and pepper galore. The potato was good. I also got the creamed corn (which I thought was incredible). The brisket was very yummy and so was the pork ribs. The only problem I had was the PRICE! I've tried pretty much all the barbecue in Lockhart and I've come to the conclusion that Black's makes the best. I have sampled all of their meats and they are perfectly seasoned and smoked. Their meat deserves five stars but I was somewhat disappointed that they do not offer a two or three meat plate with the sides. Everything served is à la cart. One other positive thing to mention is the fact that they have plenty of room and tables inside to accommodate their many customers. Wow this place was awesome staff was super nice, the food was like great, there mac and cheese and turkey was a favorite for me and that giant bbq rib was like wow I kinda glad I didn't get my home in Lockhart as I would of been a regular customer. Nice place, the town has a laid back vibe as well as I walk literally in a square in their historic downtown area, Still shock as I slept on this town when I passed through u definitely won't be disappointed with their food. Average only four stars???? Y'all must be crazy! Blacks is a landmark in Lockhart TX, hence the reason we chose this as our first destination straight from the airport. The food was just as expected. Beautifully smoked brisket, jalapeño sausage to die for, creamy Mac and cheese along with some cold crisp coleslaw. This is purely what Tx bbq is meant to be and we enjoyed every second of it!! On the way back from Luling, I had to stop by the infamous Original Black's BBQ restaurant for lunch. Wanted to try the spareribs and brisket. Both were really good, without sauce! And I'm a sauce girl! Also tried the potato salad which was ok but I'm a mustard potato salad fan. Can't wait to go back! read more
