Could not be more disappointed with a place unwilling to leave off mayo from all sandwiches and angry with the arrogant cashier who laughed at me when I said they should have indicated that on the menu because it would have been a disaster if I had a paid $16 for a sandwich u couldn't eat. I've been twice and each time I'm amazed at the creativity and precision with which these meals are executed with just a two-person team. It's hard to describe the flavors. Some you may question if they even go together but when you taste it you understand. From the variation in proteins and vegetables and sauces and cooking techniques, you go on a true culinary journey the entire time. The restaurant is small but cozy and inviting and meals are served promptly, one course after the other. Easily the best meals I've had in Beaufort ever. Period. And for $60/person, you can not beat this quality...anywhere near here! If you appreciate amazing food this is the place for you. I've been to some high end restaurants and this beat them out. The chef knows what he's doing with flavors, and I loved when he brought them out himself, described the plates and told us the best way to eat them. They were also beautifully plated. Reservations are only once a month but if you check their instagram stories they'll post cancellations. That's how I was able to get one and I'm so glad! I don't know what else to say other than this was the best meal I've had in a REALLY long time. Fixed price (currently $60 per person) with drinks, dessert and coffee etc extra. It seemed like a bargain with the amount of food that was served. Four courses with two choices per person, it was an easy decision to simply get both choices and share so we could try everything. Reservations are extremely difficult to come by, but check their Instagram account for booking dates for the following month and info on any cancellations. The bar is always open as well but with limited seating and doesn't always serve items from the full menu. Absolutely fantastic experience. I'm an adventurous eater, and always look forward to a different experience. While looking at the menu, I thought, "no way, these flavors are going to taste good together?" Can't comment on the food because I can't get a reservation. For past 4 months i've faithfully logged onto their one day reservation system at precisely 8:00 am, picked a date and time, entered my data, hit "Submit" and up pops "reservation already filled ". By 8:03 EVERY DATE is filled! Clearly some folks have figured how to game the system. At a minimum, once you have gained a date and time, that should be held until you have entered required info. I'm not a quick typist and that shouldn't be held against me. Maybe have the computer accept only 10-20 reservations per hour. read more

Wow, just wow. After sampling some of the dishes, I told Matt, the owner and chef, that I was so happy I wanted to cry. He said "don't start, or I will too." I cannot stress how much this area needed a place like Blacksheep - small, focused, friendly, unpretentious with an incredibly diverse menu all prepared by Matt using only the freshest most seasonal ingredients. Dining out in Beaufort has become a mundane and boring undertaking. No matter whether it's fine dining or casual, the offerings are dull, similar in scope and ingredients and often executed with no consistency. Not here. The attention to detail is superb. The preparations are so creative and adventurous that dining here truly becomes a culinary dive into a luscious pool of artistry, unique flavors, ingredients, and combinations. We loved that there were only eight savory menu options and two desserts. Matt mentioned that the menu will change weekly. WHAT? A revolutionary idea in the Beaufort cooking scene, and a reason to come back time and time again. The pricing is reasonable, $40 price fix for three choices off the menu. Often times, the portions tend to be quite small in venues following this system, but not at The Blacksheep. We followed the advice on their website and decided to order six different items so we could sample as much of the menu as possible. My partner started with a curried crab, toasted coconut, sweet corn soup with lime and popcorn. I ventured for the monkfish, raw, with citrus, sweet peppers, green cilantro oil and radish. Matt delivered our dishes and explained each one. A great touch. With each bite, our eyes became like saucers, as the incredible flavor profile of each plate was a surprising and welcome blend of ingredients. The pool of citrus sauce consisted of orange, lemon and lime. Somehow my palate could distinguish each of the fruits and delivered the perfect balance of tart and sweet. Combined with the other ingredients, the fresh delicate monkfish shined. The soup base was like silk, but when mixed with the other add ons became an interesting juxtaposition of creamy and crunch. Our next selections included a mushroom Parmesan fondue with sourdough toast and thyme, creamed corn, squash, zucchini, basil vinaigrette and smoked almonds, two meaty pork ribs with baked beans, pickled peaches, and pickled peach mustard, ranch spiced yogurt chicken thigh with celery salad and chili oil and finally, a chocolate pot de creme with coffee beans and cream. I could write an essay about the interesting and unique flavor combinations and the incredible attention to detail that was given to every component of a dish, but my review would go on and on. Suffice to say, that this is one of the best meals we have enjoyed in a very long time, and this place is a jewel in an otherwise tarnished crown of local dining choices. Here are the reasons for 1 star: Not very clean, bathroom was gross, clothes piled up on windowsill, rude chef and server was fake - they don't care about you. Server brought Entree out knowing I was in the restroom. Because they describe each course, she couldn't wait for me. The chairs are uncomfortable and the whole place is outdated. They hate kids. This place serves a mix of dishes - kinda like tapas but not really. Each person gets to choose 3 out of 7 on offer. My mom and I went and couldn't decide so we got all 7. It was very filling and 6 would have been ample. The wine list is short but good (we did not go for the reserve wine list because I am a cheapie) and had selections that would pair well with a variety of foods. They had some local brews on offer too. The seven dishes were a mix of flavors. They were all amazing. The cauliflower soup was my favorite. Like all tasting menu places, this restaurant caters to at least slightly adventurous foodies but there was nothing wildly out there and the chef has an amazing palate and the talent to match so most diners will be very happy. Maybe don't bring that guy who pours a bottle of ketchup on everything. There were two desserts that sounded promising but we were stuffed. It's a small place. Ambience is rustic hipster chic with Edison bulbs and wood tables. Fancy enough for a special occasion but you'd feel fine in jeans. Service was amazing. They are very responsive to emails so that is probably how I would book a reservation. This place is small so you want to reserve a table early and often.
