This restaurant is a walk back in time. This house has dark hardwood floors that embrace the age of the house, while the interior windows set the stage where one could be in a living room with friends looking out to the ocean as much as dining in a restaurant. A woodburning furnace crowns the middle of the room, and one could imagine watching the fire pop and dance inside the blackened heater. The team had guzzied up the interior for Christmas, with green garlands, red balls, and a fully decorated tree. The food was incredible: Pimento cheese oozing on top of crackers, a steak smothered in a Diane sauce- mushrooms reduced in a brandy. There were smiles all around as the cream cheese crap dip made the rounds- the bowl was scraped dry by the end. And in the spirit of christmas, the bartender created a margarita with a cinnamon twist- Cranberry on ice with an aged-blanco tequila and a rim dusted with sugar & spice. Service was where the restaurant has room to improve. The server lacked the attentiveness that might be expected in a fine-dining restaurant. And while there is certainly finer dining available around Beaufort and Port Royal, elevated service at this price point would make this restaurant a star. read more

We sat out on the porch on a very pleasant balmy evening. If you have someone with you that doesn't like loud places or is hard of hearing (we had both), the porch is perfect. We could have a very enjoyable conversation. I first ordered their special mojito but it was not what I was expecting. So I sent it back and ordered a gimlet. That was better, although the drink was a bit tart... not sure if brand or quantity of lime juice was the issue. I ordered the salmon, at 120-125 degree temp... well it was still cooked medium instead of medium rare. Tasted good. No sauce, which I asked for. But too salty... unnecessarily salty. I will try again but order RARE and see if they can cook to temp. The roasted potatoes were delicious, but for someone who watches oil intake... way too much oil was used. But I loved the way they smashed them a bit. The vericot verts were cooked to perfection and not salty. Yummy. My husband ordered the grilled tuna. He said his was great. Crab dip came with potato chips and the crab dip wasn't hot. It was barely lukewarm. My husband's burger tasted good but was only warm. My shrimp "burger " was a deep fried rubber puck. The French fries we got on the side tasted like they had been sitting and weren't hot either. I ended up ordering a side salad to eat and the waitress removed the shrimp burger from the bill. (I didn't ask her to.) The best thing about this place was the service. We have been here previously a few years ago and had a better experience. read more

Such a charming restaurant with true Southern hospitality! The building is warm and homey and the service with a friendly smile was inviting. A great variety of Southern favorites such as shrimp and grits, pimento cheese, and fried green tomatoes. Seafood favorites like calamari, oysters, and fish . Wife ordered same and agreed (from NOLA she know what a poor boy should taste like) how bad the poor boy tasted. Spoke to host who sent back food and suggested burger. Was not crowded as it was 4 pm. only 3 couples in restaurant so kitchen was not overwhelmed When bill came i saw i was charged extra $2 for unmelted cheese on burger. making burger & fries $19!!! Somehow the bill ended up at $47.00 for a burger & fries and an oyster poor boy. One of our worst meals. The calamari was soggy which they must have rushed, the shrimp basket was inedible because of the salt but our server was nowhere to be seen so we only got an offer to recook it at the end of the meal, we couldn't change out sides (which is new because we've always been able to in the past), the mashed potatoes lumpy which was gross. The "medium" steak was undercooked. The beignets were also woefully undercooked, doughy and doused in far too much powdered sugar, the crème brûlée was scrambled at the edges and, again, way too much sugar. It was pitiful. The best thing we all had were drinks. Definitely not worth the $400 price tag. read more

Great spot in Port Royal! We came in at lunch time and had a great experience. The parking lot was full so we parked nearby. Once you enter there is a small bar area on the left and restrooms to the right. Several smaller areas to dine in with a couple of enclosed ones for a more private dining experience. Upon entering we were immediately seated. Our server brought us waters and we quickly ordered. Burger for my husband and shrimp and grits for me. Maddison's is amazing!!!! It's truly where the locals eat and after you eat there you'll keep coming back. Everything is made fresh. They have something for everyone on their menu. Our waiter was awesome! He checked on us and kept our glasses filled. I love the way they are decorated. It was a little hot on the porch but it is great in cooler weather. Definitely should be pre-busing tables, bar staff needs to train on basic bar drinks, and dinner overall should be managed. We were so pleasantly surprised with Madison's! We called around 6:30 on a Friday hoping to get in ASAP, and they were able to accommodate us at 7:00! Amazing! This hidden gem has become a wonderful annual date night place for us when passing through. The staff is extremely kind, knowledgeable and helpful. We started off with some cocktail's, which were refreshing and well hand crafted. We had the fried green tomatoes which had pimento cheese, elite, raw spinach, salad, and a salsa which balanced really well together. Our appetizer was followed with the fried seafood platter and the crab cake entree (replaced the cooked spinach with Brussels sprouts), both were delectable! We were too stuffed for dessert. We had such high hopes for this place but were very disappointed. Husband ordered pasta primavera and house salad. I ordered the she-crab soup and salmon blt sandwich. Things seemed okay at first - waiter took our order and was pleasant. But then we waited and waited and waited. We waited 20 minutes and then I got up to look for a restroom and happened to see our food sitting at the kitchen counter so I sat back down, thinking someone would get it to us soon. 5 very slow minutes pass. A different waiter comes out with my entree and proceeds to give it to the other table across from ours. I'm looking at the dish as the other customer is about to start eating it. He realizes it isn't his and calls the waiter back to retrieve it. The plate goes back to the kitchen counter and less than 30 seconds later that same plate is given to me along with all the other things we ordered. We have yet to see our original waiter again or be introduced to a new waiter. It was a very unsettling experience and rather upsetting that I was given a plate of food that had been touched by another customer. We were starving so proceeded to eat. My entree was cold by the time I finished my she-crab soup. The pasta primavera was just okay and the house salad was fine. When we told the new waiter who introduced himself what happened to our food and that we should have received our soup before our entree and we shouldn't have received a plate of food that had been given incorrectly to the wrong customer, he did nothing to correct the issue. He didn't get a manager or offer a drink or discount or anything to help fix the situation. The ambience was nice and the soup was good, so I'm giving it two stars. But the service was absolutely dreadful. read more

Steak was really good, fish not so much. Steak was cooked well and seasoned perfectly. Dining room was clean and we were seated fast. Service was very slow however the server was nice. I was totally surprised because the food is usually good but this time the crab soup was watery and thin with very little crab pieces, the half sandwich was small and difficult to eat because the "innards" were falling out in my hands. This is a delightful and pretty low-key place. It was quiet, but I also had about 45 minutes before they closed. Food came out quickly and everything was cooked absolutely perfectly. Had salmon with shrimp and scallops. It has been a while since I've had scallops cooked properly. There was some spinach on the side and if I had one constructive thing to recommend is they should chop it. That's all preference though. Definitely will go back. We had a really nice lunch at Madison's today. It's a lovely building, and we were on the porch. There was no wait for a table when we arrived. I went on a Wednesday at 7 PM and sat at the bar. The bartender was polite and attentive and well groomed. I had 3 courses and dessert; calamari, she crab soup and diver scallops, then key lime pie, with 2 drinks. If I had to nitpick, the calamari could have been a little crispier and seasoned, but it was still tender and tasty. I enjoyed that meal so much, I hope I can come back soon.
