Absolutely perfect in every way. From the appetizers to the beautiful sunset, you just can't go wrong here. We met up with some local friends and had a smorgasbord. Started with the fried okra and the special bacon stuffed clams. I could have stopped there, but glad I didn't. I ordered the wild mushroom pasta and it was gloriously heavy, creamy and delicious. Probably the best restaurant in the area. Could be pretty hard to find/locate unless someone tells you about it or you search for it on Yelp. It's in the back of a quiet neighborhood. You have to give your ID at the gate guard access to get there. On the smaller side as far as restaurants go, there is limited indoor and outdoor seating available. We had a party of 11 and recommend reservations if you're going to have a party that size. Food and service were incredible! Skip Docside and head straight to Morgan's instead! read more

They easily accommodated a group of eight for lunch on a Saturday afternoon in the beautiful screened in porch with a spectacular view of the water. It was a relaxed pace for a lazy afternoon after completing the Pledge The Pink 10 mile walk. All our food was served at the same time And arrived hot and correct. The service was good. The beers were cold and the menu selection is varied. I'd highly recommend the extra effort. Terrible meal at Morgan River Grill, again. We had agreed to go with friends with some trepidation There had been some hope since there was a new owner I ordered the shrimp and scallop combo dinner. I asked to have it grilled and It came swimming is some oily sauce. It liked more sautéed than grilled but the waitress assured me it was grilled. The French fries came in a paper lined bucket. It looked kind of cute, but... the fries were cold and had obviously been sitting a while. After eating a few off the top the rest were a soggy, greasy glob. I have had ordered similar meals a couple of times since then, and it has become even more obvious that the portions were tiny. Plus Morgan is kind of pricey, the other dinners cost a lot less. Morgan's dinner included five little nickel sized scallops, and 8 or 9 small shrimp. If it sounds like there was no redeeming value, there wasn't't. Too bad, it would be nice to have another option so close by. read more

Great lunch out on the porch, the heaters made it very comfortable. From the time we were seated till we left Diana, our waitress was wonderful. My friend had a dozen raw oysters and said they were the best she ever had. I had the seafood flatbread pizza. The shrimp was large and plentiful, lots of crab meat, mushrooms, spinach, cheese all with a balsamic drizzle. I had plenty to take home for another meal. After lunch we walked down the pier and enjoyed the view. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the experience. Morgan River Grill is in Dataw plantation outside of Beaufort. We have been to Morgan River Grill, several times now, and can say with certainty that it is excellent. The food and service are wonderful. The drink menu is also excellent! From start to finish, appetizers, main meals, and desserts are lovely. We have purchased several appetizers, but my favorites are the pimento cheese, and the coconut shrimp. But Husband loves the fried green tomatoes appetizer. The shrimp and grits are my favorite meal! The crème brûlée and Keylime pie are both great choices for dessert. When you are done, don't forget to walk down by the dock! It is a beautiful view! You really cannot go wrong dining here! The casual yet beautiful environment is lovely. read more

To reach this restaurant you have to go through a guard gate at Dataw Plantation. The guard wasn't very friendly. The restaurant was busy but still accommodated us. The shrimp burger was good. Ask for the sauce on the side otherwise it may get too spicy. The restaurant is located on the Morgan River. First visit. I was a bit leery based upon the reviews, but we didn't want to drive into Beaufort so we gave it a try. The location is so pretty. I like the simple, non fussy interior as well. The service was only okay. Nothing to write home about. Food was below average - especially for the price. The stuffed shrimp app was delicious. Small portion for the price, but really good. My husband and I both chose the sautéed shrimp and scallops from the a la carte menu. Not great. Very little flavor. The scallops were the little tiny kind and they had zero sear. The lobster cream topping tasted like watered down lobster bisque. The okra was cold and under cooked so I sent it back (I never send back food). Spinach replacement was so overwhelmingly strong I could only eat one bit. Grit cakes were actually hot and very good. My son chose a burger and he did say it was good. Fries were both over cooked and yet cold. Other diner had a flat bread pizza and it was mediocre. Again, lukewarm and the cheese had zero color. Seems like such a missed opportunity here. Very nice settling. Food was above average, but kind of routine and no "pop". For such a nice setting, a few details could push it over the top. Wait staff was friendly. I had a shrimp salad sandwich, and the filling was food and fresh. It had capers added and was well seasoned. Bread was average, and they were out of rye, and I opted for whole wheat, but was given a sourdough by mistake. Prices were lower than expected. We will return again. read more

Had dinner this Tuesday while on vacation and both my husband and I had two different cuts of steak. Both were heavily covered with excessive salt. We both ordered fried okra which was not good. I realize okra isn't in season. If that is their excuse, don't put it on the menu. The oil used tasted old and the batter didn't stick and the okra was hard..just pathetic. Obviously the chief didn't pay attention to the food being served. This restaurant creates a bad impression of Dataw. Step up your game! read more

Whoever thought this was the best ribeye they ever ate was eating somewhere else. This steak and potatoes were so salty that by the time every one else was finished eating I was sick at my stomach. Not to mention food did not come out at the same time, my daughter's food came out 8 minutes after ours. Server was sweet and offered a discount. The food was delicious but the service leads something to be desired. We were renting a place on Dataw to see how we liked the community and if it was a place we would like to consider buying a home. I understand we were required to quarantine but wanted to order takeout. We were driving buy the restaurant and stopped in. The hostess was pretty snippy about the fact that we should never have come to this place. Apparently, we were supposed to call and they would deliver it. We were not told that. She made an exception and let me order take out and wait outside. I did have to shout all of my credit card information to the person taking my order and in front of 1 other customer because they "couldn't" touch my card. This was interesting since the deli on Dataw would only take my cash which is very unsanitary. So I give this one star for good food and another for the bartender who actually was trying to be nice and help out some hungry golfers. Unfortunately, this was not the only incident where we didn't feel welcomed. read more

Even though this place is on the end of the island and you have to go through a security check point to get there,it's worth it. They have a screened in porch area and an outdoor seating area. Great view of the inlet and long pier. The service was good but slow like most places who are still short of help. I had the steak special which was great and my wife the fried chicken which good as well. The she crab soup and ice berg wedge were both restaurant quality. Prices were the same as most places and parking was plentiful. Atmosphere and food were all great so give it a five stars. Check them out if in the area. read more

We went to Morgan River Grill for my husbands birthday... unfortunately even with calling several days ahead we were told we would have to sit outside on the patio for our Saturday 6:45 reservation. Ok. So we get there and it must have been one of the most humid days we've had this summer... it was almost unbearable. Nothing was there to keep the patio cool! Nothing! What upset us the most is that there indeed was room inside for 4, where it was nice and cool. The service and food were good - that is true- but except who keeps people outside miserable when there was room for all of us inside, even the two tables besides our table, to come inside! We kept expecting a large party or several more tables to come and fill up the inside- nope. We were really disappointed in the fact that no one -such as a manager, would be cruising around and maybe notice this problem.... Everyone suffered through, but they didn't have to. Everyone's shirts were soaked. We expected a little more customer service. I also noticed that most restaurants bring the birthday person something small for desert - there was none of that either... It could have been perfect, but it missed the mark. I'm sure every single person showered again after that dinner!! read more

Haven't been here since it changed hands. Too bad the mundane decor didn't get a facelift. The view of the marina is nice, but the place needs some TLC and a good decorator. The menu however, is a huge change from the last proprietor and in a good way. Bigger menus don't always mean better food. But if they can consistently execute.............. We both liked the a la carte option, where you could pick fish, pork or chicken - choose your preparation (grilled, sautéed, or blackened) your sauce (like lobster cream or red pepper coulis) and two sides. But there were so many additional appetizers and entrees it made choosing difficult. Feeling like filling up on carbs, I gave in to the craving and ordered the handmade ricotta cavatelli, mushrooms, onions, spinach, tomatoes, artichokes, fresh herbs, cream and Parmesan. I added grilled chicken. I started with the house salad, a crunchy cool leaf blend, complete with craisins, croutons, onion, and cucumbers. The accompanying Parmesan peppercorn dressing provided a perfect creamy punch to the taste buds. My husband opted for the Caesar, and all the necessary flavor profiles made their appearances and the result was a fine salad indeed. He continued with a large glistening filet of mahi-mahi, blackened and served with shrimp and scallops in a Tasso lobster cream sauce all served over fried grit cakes. It was so refreshing to see this restaurant at least take a jab at offering a bit of creativity to the local dining scene. We were hoping the food would be as dreamy as it sounded on paper. Well lucky for us it exceeded our expectations. My pasta dish will probably end up as one of the best two that I have ever had. The ricotta cavatelli was crazy smooth and silky. The vegetables all could stand on their own as they were all seasoned properly and had great flavor. The Parmesan and mushrooms added some earth woodsy tones and the cream worked beautifully to lightly coat the ingredients. All the components just made this dish sing. Even the added grilled chicken was perfectly tender, juicy and tasty. My husbands' dish brought equal accolades. The mahi-mahi was expertly cooked, and had the required flaky glistening meat. The grit cakes were a nice twist and added some crunch to the meal. The sauce, shrimp and scallops blended perfectly with the fish. Wow. I don't remember the last time we enjoyed such a memorable meal in Beaufort. Keep up the great work!!!! Can't wait to return. read more

After checking out Penn Center we were looking for dinner and decided to check out Morgan River Grill. My hubby was a little concerned when we came up to a gate house but you just have to get a visitors pass if you don't live there. We arrived about 4:00 and got a seat on at the patio bar overlooking the dock. It's a lovely view. We shared a cup of she crab soup and it was very creamy and delicious. I opted to try the shrimp and grits which are the ultimate comfort food. The shrimp were very plump and the grits were cheesy creamy goodness. I'm glad I decided to try a low country staple. Hubby had the fried chicken and he said it was very good as was the creamed spinach with mashed potatoes. We were so full we didn't have room for dessert and we were glad we got there when we did as they were really starting to fill up as we left. We would definitely go again but maybe split something next time as it was a lot of very good food. read more
