(Lennon and McCartney) I attended a charitable organization's golf outing on Tuesday and had a very enjoyable afternoon. No, I don't play golf except for a round of mini a few times a year. The grounds are gorgeous, with flowers, landscaped scenery, and gazebos everywhere. The bartenders and servers were all courteous, professional and very helpful. Blackstone cooked a simple dinner for our 100+ guests. It was a nice "make your own sandwich" version with burger patties, hot dogs, chicken and sausages paired with platters of cheese, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, rolls and potato salad. They have a massive outdoor patio with plenty of tables and chairs for us to drink, socialize, and eventually enjoy dinner. read more

The good: pace of play for a Saturday morning was not bad. I think we played in 4:25 and the cart had a pace of play clock and gps. The price of 68 with a cart and unlimited (really worn out and tired) range balls off grass included with greens fees. I never see public courses in CT have grass ranges. They layout wasn't bad. The front 9 was a little tight. Whoever designed the course had to be creative with the landscape. The course was very hilly which I don't mind. Some memorable par 3's. The greens required very accurate approach shots. Most misses were short as approach shots that were right left or long usually required a difficult chip up a slope or ended up in the woods. The bad: Unfortunately when I played on 5/15 (normally a great time of year for growing grass) the fairways were in rough shape with bare spots lots of spots that could have been considered ground under repair. The greens were slow and in rough shape as well. Of all my putts I would be hard pressed to remember one that rolled well. Most putts were bouncing around from the start. Not a waking course at all. In fact they wouldn't let you walk even if you wanted to. I guess this helps with pace of play given some of the longer walks in between holes and the hilly landscape. Overall: Considering the conditions of the course especially the greens, pace of play and layout I would say this course was average at best. Not terrible for the price. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to play here again. If the greens were grass covered, cut and rolled and the fairways were in better condition that might be a different story. I'd never been to this part of the state before. Sutton? Uxbridge? Douglas? Say Wha? What is this, Chronicle? (heads to maps.google.com) It turns out that the course is a bit of drive for yours truly. But I was attending a Memorial scramble for a friend of mine and the drive didn't matter. The event was really first-rate. The course is very pretty and interesting to play. The food served at the function afterward was also very good (we had steak and potatoes). First time golfer here, and I couldn't be happier with my first experience thanks to Blackstone National! The staff was tremendous and despite my lack of experience they made me feel right at home. The course was in great shape, you can really tell they take care of their property. After a fun yet challenging first time out on the course, my boyfriend and I had an awesome lunch and drinks on the gorgeous patio. I noticed they had this beautiful barn on the property as well. I inquired and one of the staff members was kind enough to show me around. This amazing New England style barn is a gorgeous setting for weddings and events, definitely a place I would look into for a spectacular party. I would recommend this course to any of my golf loving friends! read more

Not a great experience in many respects: 1. GPS on my cart was not working. This was my second cart. The first didn't work either. 2. The price to play was $89.00. This is overpriced for the condition of the course at this time. Many of the fairways were flooded, tee boxes were in bad shape, a number of the greens were in bad shape and trash bins on many holes were over flowing with trash. The price should have been reduced with the current conditions at the course. 3. I spoke with the manager about the GPS not working and the condition of the course after the round. His reply was "sorry". The situation could have been handled in a business like manner. I am a Sutton resident. The course is convenient for me to play. I will not play the course again and I will let my friends and neighbors know about the course. read more

I first played Blackstone National in 2005 and thought, "I'll never be able to play this track" (since I lost so many balls). But after purchasing their incredible $199 card (then $169 every year thereafter), I fell in love with this place. 3 free rounds, 14 twofers, half price monday Tuesday's and free driving range - unbelievable deal! I've been playing here for the past 10 years and absolutely love this place. Golf pro and manager takes a lot of pride in his course as well as groundskeeper Jay (has been there since day One!). I have organized tournaments here - great place for them! Food is excellent and decent selection of drafts. Take a little drive and come enjoy this lovely, yet fair, Rees -designed course! read more

For 99 dollars you would think the greens would be cut or at least get the dew off them. We all know what water an golf balls do in water. Then when you make the turn we had to wait 45 minutes to tee off again because they book to many tee times front an back. Best public course in Massachusetts and only 45 minutes from Boston. Rees Jones designed this fabulous track and it shows in so many ways. Every hole is different and challenging in its own right. There is a free driving range (driver friendly) and an awesome resturant with a huge outdoor patio that over looks the 18th green. They serve amazing food, ice cold beer, and cocktails, which are always fun after a round with family or friends. Blackstone National has it all and is fun fun for all ages. The staff is top notch, as well, which is why it is the best public course in MA and rivals some of the nice private clubs I've played on the north and south shore. Hope to get back to Blackstone again in December or some early spring golf in 2021. read more

The course looks like the maintenance crew is on strike. Fairways have weeds growing out of them, greens are extremely slow and have bare spots. Some holes you cannot see where the fairway ends and the rough begins. Areas around tees and bunkers are growing unmaintained. I understand they lost greens last year and they are proceeding with caution, but what is the rationale for charging $40 on a weekday night (somehow the decision was made to INCREASE rates???) for 9 holes of golf when the course is not in a position to be ready for golfers; especially when you can go to other places (wachusett/kettlebrook/cyprian/blissful, highfields, shining rock, CT National, triggs, etc.) for $65 that gets you 18 holes with a cart and a well maintained golf course with cut rough/fairways/greens & tees A great new grounds crew came on last year from courses that were top in the country, so the problem doesnt seem to lie with their expertise. It calls into question the leadership of the entire operation and the decisions being made from the top down. The leadership of the golf ops have no problem ignoring messages, calls, emails etc with regularity from people that are even members - with little to no consequences, sometimes not even showing up on time on a busy weekend morning to open the shop for guests. Or giving members the "if you dont like it, go somewhere else" treatment. Every decision seems to come with little to no thought put into it how it would effect the members that keep the course going through the tough times. When purchasing a membership, it comes with a certain assumption for treatment and this place has just missed the mark. Its almost as if they think you should be thanking them for allowing you to be a member and take your money. Unreal potential for this spot; but that is all it is. Wasted potential. read more

The pace of play has been horrible . I've had to quit the round with my foursome 3 times recently. I like the course but they need to move the foursomes along to at least a 4 1/2 hour round. We had 4 groups on holes on the back nine. I suggest an aggressive ranger policy. read more

I heard so much about this track from friends and was even more jacked up after visiting their website and seeing that it's a Rees Jones designed course. Knowing the area and having played many of the surrounding courses, I had a pretty good idea of what I would face, rolling hills with plenty of hardwoods lining the fairways and that's exactly what you'll find here. I'll break-up my review into two reviews, 1-Golf Course 2-Restaurant but overall I was expecting a much nicer course. I would put this course in line with Kettlebrook in Paxton. Golf Course PROS $60 greens fee with cart fairways and greens were in great shape (greens were in perfect condition and rolled true) layout is awesome with plenty of risk-reward options (classic RJ). Short par 4's and par 5's that you can play several different ways (iron vs driver off the T) CONS it's a course you must play several times, so local knowledge is key Several T boxes were un-level with spotty grass hole signage is poor. We took several wrong turns from green to tee. Thank god for the cart/shack girls out on the course who give directions not one ranger out on the course needed to repair at least 4-5 ball marks on every green (see ranger comment above) The entrance is unassuming and access road is in terrible shape. You feel as though you're driving to the maintenance shed not a nice golf course. Restaurant PROS snack shack at the turn is perfect great deck overlooking the practice green and 18th hole CONS service was terrible at the 19th hole. We bellied-up to the bar at approximately 6ish to find only two other groups up there but for some reason the bartender was preoccupied doing other things, to the point that we had to go inside looking for service. When she did finally come outside we were disappointed to hear that the tap system was not functioning, so no draft beer. We ordered a couple of Sierra Nevada's which were quickly brought to us but had to ask her for frosted pint glasses and waters once she returned from inside again. We were going to order food but decided against it as the vibe being put-off by the bartender told us otherwise. We actually overheard her telling a coworker that she needed to get out of here soon so she could visit a friend who was in from out of town. We also had to go inside to request our bill... The food that we did see come out of the kitchen looked pretty good. needless to say, no tip was left. read more

Less than impressed. Came here yesterday with a group of 8. The price was ok, as this was my first time playing here and I had big expectations. The course was in good conditions, but for some reason it was cart path only and we did a good amount of walking, ok no big deal. The tee boxes were embarrassing. Maybe 7ft between sticks and not a flat surface on the entire box. Greens were very slick, a lot of complaints from my group, I didn't mind from a putting stand point, but it was very hard to hold any green. read more

Course was in fantastic condition; staff was very friendly, even in the clubhouse. Highly recommend and we will return !!! Plus, the course is nicely challenging and in a beautiful setting. *********************************************** (from August 2014) Don't know if we would play here again. Challenging course, but there are many other good choices around. For the price of $72, conditions of tee boxes, greens AND fairways all were not as we would expect in that price range. Though we were right on pace with the 4some in front of us (even waiting some moments at each tee box) we were still on pace as recorded on the cart's GPS. A ranger came by and told us to play faster. ???????? There's nothing worse than to feel if you have to rush your game. We finished the round in 4hr15min. Played here for the first time today, the price was $69 for 18 with a cart which is twenty dollars cheaper than regular greens fees and now I know why. I am just a weekend golfer when I have time but I was expecting more from this place. I know it's been a warm dry summer but most of the greens were unplayable, they were mostly bare of any grass at all and the fairways were pretty burnt up which is somewhat to be expected with the draught and hot weather but also there was very little clean up done since the storm that came through this area last Tuesday. I gave it two stars because I did like the layout and found it a nice challenge for my skill level. I know we are in a pandemic and it has negatively affected a lot of businesses but this course could really use some TLC . Hopefully the management can turn this place around soon because they do normally have a good reputation and we have a lot of golf left this season. read more

Wow, what a disappointment. This course has gone down hill drastically. Previously touted as a top course in MA, it is now in terrible shape. The greens are barely green, completely burned out. Some of the fairways were okay. The GPS on our car would not work nor turn on and the cart would not even lock in park. The older gentleman in the shop, who we thought to be is the starter is not friendly or professional at all, making a comment that he didn't even give a "rat's **ss". It will be a long time before we decide to go back there again. It's too bad because the course has a nice layout with some challenging holes. read more

Played here a few weeks ago. I specifically asked if they were busy in the afternoon and was told that it wasn't that busy. We were actually put in with a huge tournament and were surrounded on some tees by 3 -5 groups of 4 drinking beer and eating food. They have taken away the coolers of water they used to have, there was no water in the ball washers and there were workers on almost ever green or fairway making play almost a mini-golf experience. Green are always sandy here for some reason. When we went in to complain and ask for a rain check, the lady gave us 70% of our money back and said that she was prorating our rain check because we played 4.5 holes already. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! prorated refund for putting us out during a 100+ person tournament. What a joke. Next time you go, stop by the driving range and take a gander at what passes for golf balls these days. YOu are hitting cracked balls or balls so worn out they are smooth. And you are hitting them off dirt. The course itself is a fantastic lay out with great views and a challenge to your game no matter your handicap. If I were grading the course on just the course layout it would be a 10. judging it on layout and usual conditions I would give it a 8.5. grading the team of managers and how they address concerns, the driving range and overall experience, I drop that to a 7. This is the fairest most honest review you will find from someone who play 4-5 times a week all over New England. read more

Everything about this place was slow today. Took 10-15 minutes to check in. Course was running 15 minutes behind schedule when we went to load our carts (which were unavailable when we arrived). Saw the beverage cart twice in the first 3 holes... then never again. When we went to make the turn (~4pm) the grill had already been shut down even though there were several groups behind us. At the end of the day, it was 5+ hour round... never a ranger in sight. Pretty terrible since I got an email warning me about keeping up with pace of play a just a few days prior. not coming back at this price ($76 for an Oct afternoon) for such slow play... read more

This used to be one of my favorite courses. It is still one of the best layouts in New England. Our round started 20 minutes late and then took 5 hours. The staff was horrible from pro shop to driving range to starters to snack shack. Food and drinks cost more than Fenway, awful! The course was in mediocre condition. Fairways and rough were understandably long due to recent rain. Blue tee boxes were horrible, uncut with divots and badly sloped. Its a shame. I will go to similarly priced Cyprien Keyes, Kettlebrook or New England CC. read more

I like Blackstone alot, and I consider it one of the best courses in the area. The course is challenging, but not too difficult where you don't want to come back. They use GPS carts and valet bag drop service. They had some issues last year with the course being dry and grass getting burnt. However, they have alleviated the problem this year. This golf course and especially Matt Stephens, the course manager, has done a complete POSITIVE 180. They have acknowledged the responsibility and work they must work on to improve the service. I have no doubt this will happen and can't wait to recommend many fellow golfers to visit here once again. Matt has gone "over the top" to send a few 4somes to me in order to be donated, not to 1 group of people but to a few groups. Senior Citizen golfers and School Booster Auctions. I had not played this course since it opened in 1999. At that point I felt it was too challenging for me to enjoy. I have rediscovered this beautiful track - every hole has character, most holes have great views. Elevation changes and doglegs make play a varied and unique - for this area - experience. Greens are true and mid speed. The Reese Jones design green complexes are wonderful. There are only four houses that can be seen from the entire course. They are on the 10th/11th. There are only a couple of holes that one is aware that there is another golf hole in the area. Large practice green allows chipping and a driving range that comes with price of admission. Although the weekend list price is $75, the club offers specials and weekday prices that make this course reasonable as well as desirable. read more

We had our industry's golf tournament at Blackstone National last fall. All the players were impressed with the condition and beauty of the course, especially since it was at peak foliage. Staff was excellent and very accommodating while helping with the planning of this event. I would definitely recommend this club whether it be for a simple round of golf or large business outing. I consider Blackstone National Golf Club is considered one of the finest golf courses in Massachusetts. The Sutton gem has been lauded far and wide for its challenging yet playable routing and the overall excellence of architect Rees Jones' work. Tucked in the wooded countryside of the Blackstone Valley area of southwestern Massachusetts, not far from Worcester and Boston and only 25 minutes from Providence, R.I. , Blackstone National GC is an aesthetically pleasing track that winds easily over a hilly landscape, through mature forests, and past old stonewalls that give the course a sense of permanence and place. There are only a few forced carries at Blackstone National, and Jones incorporated large fairways into the layout, which allows mid- and even high-handicappers to enjoy the experience. The ample fairways allow a player to stay in the hole even after a less than perfect tee shot. There is bunkering guarding rather large greens, making it important to choose the proper club to find the target. The club opened up the course a bit to make it less penal off the tee and on approaches to the medium-sized greens. Some of the best holes at Blackstone National, which can stretch to almost 7,000 yards from the tips and plays to a par of 72, are its par-threes. One of the most stunning is the 173-yard 11th, which demands a tee shot over a small pond. But the par-fours are also very good, as evidenced by the mammoth 486-yard 15th, which bends to the left after a large ridge that cuts across the fairway. If you hit your tee shot to the right side of the fairway, the ball will tumble down the hill and shorten the hole by 50 to 100 yards. The drop from tee to green is almost 80 feet, creating a magnificent view from the tee box. I love the 18th at Blackstone National, it is a superb finishing hole. It's only 485 yards from the tips, but the par-five is loaded with all kinds of trouble if you wander. The tee shot must be true to find a landing area protected by wetlands and woods. Big hitters can reach the putting surface in two shots after a strong drive, but the approach is uphill and there are a number of deep bunkers guarding the putting surface. The smart play, especially if you have a good round going, is to lay up in front of the green and knock the ball onto the putting surface with a wedge. There's a little extra pressure as you finish your round on the 18th. A crowd usually gathers on the veranda hovering above the green to watch the groups come up to the clubhouse. Beautiful course, nice people,reasonable rate. Sounds great right? It would be if every round I've played so far didn't exceed 5 1/2 hours. I just can't play if I'm waiting 10 minutes between shots and longer at the turn. I left after 9 holes today because there were 3 foursomes on the 10th hole. I had already put in 2 hours 40 minutes on front 9 with 2 foursomes in front. If you don't mind a slow round and waiting to hit your ball this is truly a fine course but they need to find a way to speed up the round. Maybe some rangers? read more

Recently played Blackstone National and had a great experience. From the moment I pulled up until I left the staff made me feel like I was a member of a private club. They were all very attentive and assisted with anything I needed. The course was in great shape and was very challenging. Demanding tee shots that require placement over distance are key to scoring well. As a bonus the course has a grass range and range balls are included with your round! read more

This course was a disappointment. The course is in all around bad shape. The fairways had many dead/burnt spots as well as old divots absolutely everywhere that have not been repaired. The rough is very uneven. The cart paths are in awful shape especially on that back nine. The greens are my biggest gripe. They have one of the worst rolls in the area. They are covered in rocks and sand and have dead patches everywhere. The ball jumps around like crazy, you're lucky to hole out a well struck putt. Even the driveway is full of potholes and heaves. Also carts are required. It aggravates me because I always prefer to walk. And the cart is a separate price on top of the absolutely ridiculous 80 dollars to play this course. They don't even offer a meal special for that price. There are much better courses for less money in this area. read more

Challenging golf course that favors long drivers. Course was in great shape. Rough extremely long - one stroke penalty basically if you are in second cut of rough. First time you play this course it would help to play with someone who knows the course as there are several blind shots. This is not a little course and as others have mentioned you rarely see others holes. Too much green to tee to walk. Greens roll well but are tricky. A little pricey in the weekend ~ 80 bucks. We we able to get a Sunday AM tee time on Saturday during peak season when most area courses were booked out (due to higher price I presume ). Now that I am in email list I am getting good promos sent to me. I will be back Pretty much just a good golf course and range. Clubhouse / bar / restaurant is not the focus. i have golfed this track throughout 2020 ,super great conditions in spring /early summer as a veteran of this track the best conditions for at least a decade, and boom ! the drought hit and conditions rapidly progressed to fair conditions especially the conditions of the greens , so i decided to start expanding areas for our ( foursome ) weekly outing , targeting many different courses of central mass only to find many tracks were all following suit , kettlebrook =smoked! stowe acres! california wild fires fairways scorched greens ! juniper hills 1 decent green out of 18 holes ! But just coming back this week to see if this beloved course could redeem my love , boom ! after such a difficult year i would have to say blackstone has redeemed their spot of a top notch track during such a tough year ! read more

Having been out on a golf outing a few years ago at Blackstone National , I was pleasantly surprised on the seclusion of each fairway , hardly encountering other golfers , especially on a seemingly busy day, with each hole offering a different challenge and different landscape, the course is truly spectacular and well maintained , since then I have been hooked on Blackstone's course. This Past week we hosted a Family event in one of the private function rooms at Blackstone and again , Blown away by the venue , everything was perfect , the room was Clean and classy , Food and service were Outstanding , My guests were equally impressed , so much that I received " Thank-You" cards days later after the event with my guest's rave reviews, Thank You Blackstone National , Can't wait to book our next event! read more

The course is in good shape and a fun design. For a public course it's a very good track. That said, be prepared to be extremely frustrated on the a few things. First, the employees are all very elitist. You would assume you are playing at Augusta by how they treat you, almost that you (the customer) are below them. You will probably play the front mind in a reasonable two hours, however, once you reach the turn, enjoy the sight to be had. What's that sight you ask? That's the two groups they still have on the tee waiting to tee off on your tenth hole. From there enjoy the three hour nine. I've played here about 30 times, so I obviously come back, because the course is good. However, that's severely impacted by management. read more
