Great local spot for BBQ just off the interstate! Pulled off I-81 at the Wythville exit in a trip to northern Virginia and decided to try this local bbq restaurant. The brisket had a good mixture of lean and fatty meat, and a perfect smoke that really didn't need any sauce, but the bourbon sauce added a savory heat that was excellent. The real surprise was the bourbon beans! This blend of black and pinto beans with peppers, onions and bacon is sitting in a brilliant sauce with an amazing sweet heat and is thin enough to imbue the flavor without being a thick brown-sugar soup... a definite must have! The staff were very friendly as well. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was price and setting. Based on the interior which appears to still be under some construction, I'm assuming they have only recently moved into the space... which is fine, however, for table service I would expect something more that styrofoam to-go containers and plastic utensils. And, although the quality of the food is quite good and portions are nice, $21 for one bbq meat and two sides is a bit on the high side. So, if you are moving through the area and are looking for good bbq, (and don't mind paying a bit more and being served in styrofoam) it's definitely worth stopping by. read more

Stopped on the way through town. Noticed a few others were out of towners as well. This place isn't easy to find but look for the picnic table outside with 3 watery trash cans. Gross. Walked inside and had a nice vibe. The building is shared with a medical office. Very friendly staff greeted us. They do not list prices! We should've asked. Ordered a bbq plate, 2 tacos and 1 of the gourmet hot dogs. Paid - and then realized it was $53. Totally my fault. I asked to try a small amount of pulled pork and brisket. While the receipt tape was broken, I think I was charged for 2 meats. My wife tried 2 tacos of different flavors. Wondering if this also was an uncharged for the 2 taco combo not being 2 of the same. Alright so all of that is just our fault. Here's where it gets interesting. I asked how long they'd been open and in the location while my wife uses the restroom with our 9 year old son. She returns with a look on her face. Bathroom is "to the right and down the hall". You go down the hall to realize you pass through a disgusting storage area to the left. Boxes and garbage thrown on the ground. Spare ingredients sealed by strewn about. To the right? 3 old refrigerators held closed with blue painters tape, a stack of pallets and other miscellaneous crap in total disarray. So maybe they're busy and haven't cleaned up since yesterday. Go into the men's room. There are no less than 100 fruit flies flying around a plastic take out style 8-12oz cup with sugar water in it. Some flies are in the water and dead, others love and dying, others and I am not exaggerating - 100 - minimum flying around the sink, the urinal, garbage can. Also noticed roach crawl under the garbage can. Barf. Go back outside and I looked at my wife and said, "the little flies?" And she of course agreed that was her look. We get our food. BBQ sauce is a homemade bourbon which I didn't care for and outside of a vinegar sauce, they had Sweet Baby Ray's. I like SBR's and have it in my fridge, but I go to a homemade BBQ place to enjoy not just the meats but also some homemade sauce. This disappointed us on a few levels. The food was not great. Meat was fatty and beans were bizarre with a bunch of watery veggies mixed in with pinto beans or a light bean variety. More than all, the place should be inspected by the health department for the disarray of food products and supplies (I've seen frat houses with better kitchen organization / this looked like a bear walked around the kitchen and pulled stuff off the shelves). More than anything the flies were an abomination. If they're in the bathroom, you know they are in the kitchen. CALL a professional pest control company to get that under control yesterday! This was clearly a homemade hob job with the sugar water. So do that at your own house - NOT in a commercial kitchen. I didn't call to report this but probably should have. I hope no one gets sick. Looking for a place along I-77 and decided to try this BBQ place and so glad we drove the extra mile or so. We had the chicken plate and brisket tacos and there were both excellent. The sides were all great and they had 4 sauces to choose from plus hot sauces. It's a hole in the wall but don't sleep on it - the food is great and you won't regret it. read more

A literal hole in the wall! Take out food with sit down dinning prices. My brisket was dry and lukewarm at best. The coleslaw was awful . You can sit down inside but everything is served in to go boxes and plastic disposable everything. Not worth the price for what we got! read more

Over-priced for what it is and generally average bbq. Still, it's a locally-owned independent place where they smoke their own meats on site. Look for the row of Big Green Eggs! I just wish they had better selection of bbq sauces. The hickory bourbon is waaay too bourbon-y, tje white sauce? Just nope. And Sweet Baby Ray. My opinion only - nothing more - but I think if you're going to take pride in smoking your meats on site, you should also have homemade bbq sauces. read more

Saturday about 1:30 was in this town and thought I would try this place. Very small inside definitely not somewhere you're going to go for an experience or ambience. It was backed out the door and no seating so I guess you would just have to eat in your car. I was by myself and ordered two tacos. Waited on them for 30 minutes. I think that's a little long for two tacos. I'm not sure what the deal was because takeout orders behind me got served. By the time I got my food the place had cleared out, but I decided to leave anyway. The man who I assumed owned the place was really nice and did apologize for the wait. The food was tasty, but the tacos were simple, literally just sweet Thai chicken on a tortilla nothing else... I guess I expected some sort of slaw or something to jazz it up. The corn salad which is called Elote was very good. If I lived here, I'd probably try it again. Definitely not going to drive an hour to eat it again. read more

Decided to drift off I-81 in Wythevillle to grab a late lunch and found the menu for Blackwood Co BBQ online and decided to try it. Super glad we found it. Don't let the humble surroundings fool you. Just inside the bbq grill and the Green Eggs sitting outside you will find a solid menu with lots of traditional and creative offerings. We ordered the brisket enchiladas, pulled pork sandwich and a brisket taco. All were outstanding. The only complaint is that we live four hours north of Wytheville and won't get to eat there until the next time we head south. Oh, and don't miss the mac and cheese. read more
