Not far from the highway so it was a easy choice for us to avoid fast food chains "Roadside cabin" is a weird way to describe this, it's a sports bar in a strip mall. Lunch time on a Saturday, one server and one bartender but a steady flow of tables. It made it difficult to watch and wait for one person to take care of the entire dining room. She did everything she could, she was friendly and efficient. But it caused a long wait for each table The mgmt really should have two people. Well, we had high hopes since our last visit was so positive. We were camping near by and went out of our way to have lunch here. First off, we were virtually ignored after getting our menus. Our waitress acted as if she was swamped although there were only two other tables. After a while, I caught her attention and said 'we're ready!' And she said 'I'll get to you in a minute' then brought the table next to us their bill and proclaimed to them, 'Thanks for being patient with me' while glaring at me. Becky and I ordered sandwiches. Becky asked what the sides were and if we could get a cup of soup for a side. Waitress said yes, so we both ordered the ham and bean soup. Charlie ordered the country fried steak and asked if he, too, could get soup as one of his sides. She said there was an upcharge, so he got the green beans. G was is in the bathroom so I ordered her country fried steak and sides. When the meal came, G had a chicken fried chicken. She went to the waitress who was behind the bar and said she ordered a country fried steak. The waitress told her I'd ordered the chicken. The three of us at the table know FOR SURE I said country fried STEAK. My buttermilk chicken sandwich was over cooked. It was black and dried out. So I ate G's chicken that wasn't burnt. It took a long time for the right order to come out. The rest of G's food was cold by the time the country fried STEAK arrived. When it did, G asked if rolls came with the plates. The answer from the waitress was 'Nope' and we all just looked at her incredulously because the menu said rolls come with plates. I even checked before we left. Finally she turned to go but whispered to my husband, 'I'll get you some rolls'. The rolls were delicious as was the white bean and ham soup. Everything else was mediocre. When we FINALLY got our check (we had to ask for it) Becky and I were charged 3.50 for our cup of soup in addition to the $15 sandwich. She did not tell us there would be a charge so I balked. She tried to shrug it off but I would not give in. Eventually she removed the extra cost. I didn't want to leave a tip, but I left 10% reluctantly. We rented a cabin in the mountains near Hillsville,Va. I want to highly recommend "The Mason Jar"restaurant. Tried it for lunch, went back two days later for dinner and cannot decide which was better. Sandwiches were freshly made, the waitress was cute as a button and very efficient and pleasant. Ice cold Beers were kept coming. Dinner and drinks were equal to a high class restaurant. Salads fresh assorted lettuce, tomatoes,cucumbers, onions and toppings . Ribeye steak tender and flavorful, very good cut of meat ! Fried shrimp fresh and perfectly fried. Only hitch was the baked potatoes, could have been fresher. But we will go again anytime we are in the area. Clean, well planned bar on one side, restaurant in separate room. Wait staff on bar side also top notch. After a long day of travel, the hotel recommended the Mason Jar, but after our visit, my bride & I will not be back here. The live entertainment was good, all else, employee attitudes towards each other just seemed off. Overcooked food, cold food, slow service and not a very clean place. Tables left un-bussed, and the way the employees interacted with each other, all I can say is seemingly unhappy people work here for sure. I had the broiled cod while my bride had the country cobb salad. My fish was over cooked and the chicken in my bride's salad was lukewarm at best by the time it came out. read more

After cycling through New River Trail, we found this spot in the way back in Hillsville. Our server, Larry, was very attentive and filled our drinks several times. We ordered fries and onion rings for appetizers, which were tasty, and salads for the entree. My apple salad was huge, with a large chicken breast on top, a lot of blue cheese, craisins, pecans and plenty of dressing. On a road trip and this popped up on my Yelp screen. Very unassuming--a plain Jane restaurant in a half empty strip mall. The server, Kelly, was outstanding and super friendly. Great suggestions! I ordered the blackened chicken wrap--with regular chicken, as I don't care for blackening spices, and subbed the sautéed squash and zucchini for the fries. Outstanding flavor. My partner ordered a selection of sides; baked potato, green beans, and a lovely side salad that was more than one usually expects from a restaurant at lunch time. We stopped here while traveling through and would not go back again. There was not a lot of room inside the restaurant and we were lucky to find an open table. The service was very slow and the food was not very good. My grilled chicken crunched...I could jot finish it because of the odd taste. Also fries were very natural potato tasting...hard to describe the flavor, all I can tell you is I did not eat them all and that almost never happens. Lol There is also a bar area that is connected to the restaurant, that seemed much more lively that may have been a better atmosphere and better service. Pork fritters were good, but the consistency on the inside isn't what I would expect from a fritter. Devils backbone local beer was good according to my hubby. I had the fried chicken sandwich and it was over fried and bordering burnt. My hubby got the tex mex burger which he enjoyed - I tried it because he said it wasn't that hot - my mouth was on fire after I took one bite. Our youngest had the Philly cheesesteak and he said it was good. He finished it all which isn't like him to finish an adult sized meal. Our oldest got the bourbon burger which he enjoyed. The fries had good flavor and the sweet potato fries were sweet (in a good way). Overall the fries, sweet potato fries, and onion rings were limp. Not sure if this is how they mean for them to be cooked, but possibly the oil isn't hot enough when they fry them or they need to change the oil to get them crisper like you would normally expect. The mason jar will like you to think I'm lying on my reviews that is wrong! My second oldest son did get sick off their over garlic burgers in December 2023 and I went in there to listen to karaoke twice I don't drink alcohol much at all so I left my house which is 2 minutes away sober I never drink before I leave the house. The bartenders there are lying about me drinking before going in. It's not clean and myself and some others have seen their "buddies " drinking in their trucks, cars on more than one occasion. The reason the bartender didn't like me was because I didn't have any tip money on me and I told her I would bring it back but after being lied on I decided she didn't need a tip. read more

I had the Marylander crab cake sandwich, and it was one of the best crab cakes I had outside of Baltimore (and better than some of the places there, too)...super thick and tasty with lots of crab meat. My wife had a bourbon-glazed burger, (can't remember the full name off of the menu) and it was spot on: just the right amount of salt and pepper for seasoning when it was grilled, and it was cooked to the right level of temperature and firmness while still being juicy. And don't overlook the hush puppies: very well seasoned and tasty (not boring and bland at all!)...wanted to get more, but decided that too much of a good thing would spoil it. And the service was great: at the time we came in around noon, you could seat yourself, and the server took our orders quickly, and was attentive at the right level (not too much or too little follow up checks). Have to admit I was a little worried when I found this in a shopping center. But once I walked in the door I was amazed. Just like walking into a little log cabin. Wood walls, wood fixture, wood booths, the works. Darts, boxing and pool to entertain you while you wait for your food or have drinks. We chose Mason Jar to try their Maryland crab cakes, as I'm kind of a crab cake fanatic. Wow. Such a pleasure to have the right blend of lumpy, flavorful and crispy outside of the east coast.
