About a 2-2.5: I've always been curious about Blain's Farm & Fleet, as I loved seeing their commercials! This is somewhat of a 'megastore' that has clothing, footwear, lawn & garden items, sports & outdoors equipment and tools, pet supplies, auto parts, items for the farm and livestock, home basics, and even food & beverages. They have limited brands, so I just wished they had a large selection and more of a variety. Staff are on site, but they are spread apart; looking for assistance was slightly difficult. As for the good, I have always been satisfied with the Farm & Fleet that I shop at in Bradley, IL. Unfortunately the Bradley location was out of portable generators due to severe weather in the area on Monday. We lost our power and we learned it may be out for several days. On Tuesday morning I called the Ottawa store to see if they had the generator that I wanted. A very helpful employee named David advised me that they have several different sized generators in stock. When I arrived at the store I was told the generator that I wanted was out of stock. I asked if I could purchase the one they had on display. The store manager refused to sell me the display. I had to spend an additional $600 to purchase an alternative model that I could physically handle. I don't see why the store manager needed to have the display generator on the shelf if none were in stock anyway. This experience will make me rethink shopping at Farm & Fleet in the future. read more

The website is awful, I've attempted to place 3 different orders and each time the order was canceled and the charge wasn't refunded for 3-5 days. Weekend customer service....don't waste your time. They say they price match but I went to purchase an inverter and was told they wouldn't price match Walmart's price. The UPC matched identically. I strongly dislike shopping at Walmart so I guess I'll drive out to Rural King to do my farm shopping. I was an avid shopper here, even got my $25 dollar reward for spending $2,500 this year. My Grandmother worked here, My parents worked, and meet here, my sister as well as myself all worked here as well, it's a pretty big family institution! I left here in 2001 on bad terms, and I did not return for almost 5 years as a customer, time went on I started to stop in from time to time, and still to this day I see people I worked with, and I even see people my grandmother worked with! The day shift staff is very knowledgeable, and most have worked here for years, night shift is mostly high school part timers who have only been employed for a few months. All that aside it is a unique shopping experience this store has something for everybody, from Candy, to gifts, to tires, to tractor parts, and animal feed. read more

The building is bright and clean and most aisles are wide enough if you have mobility issues. They have many products for pets, people, city or rural life. Sometimes they have good sales; however, their everyday prices are a bit expensive. I most often purchase goods from their sale ad or items I need for wildlife. If you have wildlife visiting your house, this is a good place to buy items for them. We have bought corn, bird feed, salt-licks, and lard cakes for various animals for several years. If you need any of these items, I strongly suggest you stop at F & F. Occasionally they have sales on dog items, shoes or housewares that are reasonable. I really like the older staff as many of the younger staff just are not trained in customer service. It seems those 40 and over have a very different work ethic at this store. I really like it when my questions are answered properly instead of giving me a blank stare and the quote: " I don't know." I attempted to cancel an order on a Tuesday. I was told the funds will be back in my account in 1-2 business days. On Saturday, I received a notification that my order is ready. I called back in to cancel, again and I gave my order # to a younger sounding woman at the service desk and she put me on hold for 10 minutes. After I hung up and called back in and asked for a manager, the manager was not letting me talk and was rude. She obviously did not take the Customer Service 101 class. While I was on the phone with the manager, I received my cancellation email and was told the funds will be available in 7-10 business days from today. The manager sarcastically apologized and I said there is no need to apologize, just fix the problem with your employees and she started defending her incompetent employees. She is not manager ready to lead a team to do their jobs correctly if she only wants to make excuses for her team. read more

I go here mostly for some hunting gear and work boots. I had a pretty bad experience buying a teske' trailer here that resulted in the wrong title being issued and an almost 2 hr wait from beginning to end.The trailer is awesome for hauling firewood and camping supplies but the buying experience was aweful and way too long than with the title mix-up which took a few weeks to solve I cannot recommend buying a trailer here. I twice purchased 40 bags of mulch on sale through the internet and had Tony, a young man working in the warehouse part of the Ottawa store, who processed my order and then went out and loaded the van in a pouring rain! He did so cheerfully and courteously. I offered to give him a ride to the area outside where the mulch pallets were located because of the downpours but he refused stating company policy. After the second round of loading the van I offered him a tip for all of his help and going above and beyond, in my opinion. He graciously refused stating again it was against company policy and it was his pleasure helping me as part of the Farm and Fleet team. I discovered the Ottawa store about 20 years ago, but became a full-time fan when I moved here 3 years ago. This store has great clothing (from Carharrt work wear to Lee's denim), good deals on shoes, appliances, tools, and even stuff for farmers, ranchers and horse people! It's fun. What do I always buy? Their private line of nut meats is always good... and cheaper than any other store around. read more

For Mother's Day, Farm & Fleet featured a Weber grill for $399 in their ad. I called numerous stores to find that they had limited quantities in stock, but for an additional $120, they would ship one to my house. I encountered a manager, Paul, at the Ottawa store in Illinois who took my name and number and said he would try to get me that grill at the sale price. After 10 days or so, I received a call from Paul stating he had got that grill for the sale price and he was holding it for me. I want to thank him for his dedication to his customers and for going the extra mile. People like him are rare in this day and age and Farm & Fleet is lucky to have him . This is one of the larger Farm and Fleets but one of the lesser run ones. I find it worth my while to travel further to receive better service. I drove in to see about purchasing a riding mower and after two trips to the service desk to request assistance (they did promptly page for me) a female manager showed up and was quite rude. I had a few questions on the two models and she said she didn't know and when I asked who did, she said it obviously wasn't me. When I'm spending over a thousand dollars I woudl think I'd get amazing service. When I asked to speak to her superior, she said "Carl will stick by me. But feel free to wait around for a few hours for him to get back" So my money and my business have left this store for good. Shame, good products, bad employees. read more

I saw a product on line that I wanted from a store near me, by near I mean 30 miles away. Online it stated they had 2 of these, the exact amount I wanted, I didnt want to waste the time and money to go to the store if they didnt have them, so I called the store to conform they that where in the store. The store employee said they did have them, so I paid for them with a credit card so I could do a in store pick up, after driving to the store,they stated that they had made a mistake and only had one of the two items I had prepaid for. They also said that they had tried to call me, but they left no message on my answering machine. I e-mailed the corporate head quarters about this and said that I feel like I should get 10% off these items when they do have them, I have never received ANY response back from them, not even a sorry. read more

Made a 35 mile trip to the store on Wednesday February 7 to purchase some items we saw on sale on line. Upon arriving we realized we were a day too early for the sale. With the impending winter weather on the way we did not know if we would be able to return in time for the sale dates, NO PROBLEM here Mike the store manager overheard our reservations and authorized our purchase there immediately that day. I would like to say that is not just a one time occurrence of above and beyond customer service at this store. This customer driven attitude is and has always been in effect here. All departments in this store are just the best I have personally experienced. A great 5 star business right here in LaSalle county. read more

My mother has a Chevy SUV. She had it serviced at a local shop and they checked the brakes wear. It came back with a sheet of paper saying her brakes had somewhere between 30%-50% life left in them. She had me look into it and I just thought if I'm going to go to all the trouble of pulling brake off to inspect, then I'm just going to replace them with lifetime pads. Pain in the ass considering they had another 60,000 miles left on pad! She did need a new muffler though and I had always had good luck at Farm and Fleet with exhaust prices (things have changed). The called me up and said the price to replace her muffler was going to be $568.... after I picked my jaw up off the floor I told the lady that was not going to happen and my wife would pick the car up later and we'd find someone more reasonable. She then said she was going to send me a link showing other repairs that were suggested needing to be done. She sent it and you can imagine my surprise when I discovered they recommended that the struts be replaced. I had just been under that car two day before and there was not a thing wrong with the struts. I called her up and asked why she thought the struts needed to be replaced? Her reply was "they are original equipment, and they will go bad". Now stop and think about what she said.... I asked her to repeat what she said and she said the same thing. That was her whole reasoning for replacing the struts (good thing they don't sell whole engines). She then accused me of trying to start a fight....I simply told her she was trying to sell parts and scare elderly citizens and women that know nothing about cars. She had pointed out that the paperwork said 'recommend strut replacement' not 'strut replacement needed'...pretty small difference in my book. I called back and talked to the manager of the store. He shrugged it off as suggestive selling, like asking a customer if they wanted fries with the cheeseburger. Be very wary of dealing with shops and dealerships that profit a whole lot from selling parts. read more

Went to F&F yesterday, needed to have a stud replaced on the rear wheel of my car. Terrible customer service from the lady at the customer service desk. Before anything, she informed me that it would cost $75 per hour to repair the stud. I asked for a closer estimate than that. She said she could get that. I told her I would appreciate that amount of customer service. I recorded the entire exchange. She then got on the phone to find out about getting the parts and told me there were over 30 different studs for my car. What kind of dopes do you hire here???? I decided to take my business elsewhere. Had some business to attend to in Morris, stopped by Tire Tracks. They quoted me $20 to replace the broken stud so I made the appointment. They asked if I might possibly pick up the parts while I waited. Went to Auto Zone in Morris, only one stud for my car, not 30 as I was told by frumpy at the Farm & Fleet customer service desk. Parts cost me less than $5. Tire Tracks had the job done in half an hour. $20 as quoted. The will get my business from now on. Very professional and they don't act like the customer is a bother. Figure it out F&F. Customers don't NEED you!!!! read more

What was once a good store to do business with has slipped way down in the ratings. I'm a twenty five year shopper at this store and have to finally say enough. Product quality is mixed. But what is worse is customer service. My two recent instances include a trip to the paint department where "Ann" after much moaning and groaning mixed 3 cans of paint for me. No thank you or anything. Wrote that off to having a bad day. After waiting ten minutes for an employee to help me, I had to return once again to the service desk where they paged an employee. Another 5-10 minutes and they paged a Manager. The female manager was not only uninformed on their products, but very rude. When I reexplained that I was interested in purchasing a riding mower as well, she told me that I should come back when I knew what I wanted. Well, that several thousand dollar purchase (and any future) have gone elsewhere. Shame on you Blain's! Time for some new management from top to bottom I'd say. read more

Took 2 vehicles there for repair. Had new struts installed in last vehicle only to drive across parking lot and noticed front end noise. Some 5 1/2 hours later, after vehicle spent 2 days in their shop, was told 3rd set of struts were "defective." Following day, picked up vehicle and was told that they were unable to fix the front end noise. Took vehicle to my local GMC dealer who determined that the struts were incorrectly installed along with various other issues. Close to $1000 later, the problem was fixed. Farm and Fleet approved only partial payment despite the fact that the issue was caused by them. Told them that the issue needed to be turned into their insurance company - it was - and we were reimbursed but out all of the hours and driving time it took to finally repair my vehicle. As for the our first vehicle that was repaired, who knows? We'll have to send it in for a second opinion. This is our last experience with Farm and Fleet's shop - too time consuming, costly, and frustrating to ensure with our vehicle repairs. read more

My family started shopping at Farm and Fleet in the 1970s. In those days you needed proof of being a farmer or having a commercial drivers license to shop there. At that time items such as shoes, clothing and tools were made in America. They even sold, heaven forbid guns because farmers usually have a use for them. That gradually changed and over the intervening years the quality of the merchandise and customer service has declined dramatically. The VAST majority of items including, tools, shoes, clothing and sporting goods are cheaply made in China. The customer service has gotten to the point where bait and switch, false advertising and other practices are the accepted norm. These things used to be illegal and have always been unethical. I have lived in several other states and as someone who has owned livestock and used farm supply stores regularly in North Dakota, Utah and Nebraska I can say with certainty that Farm and Fleet has become the WORST Farm supply store I have EVER been in! It seems like they are trying to become a "country Walmart" but the quality isn't even up to Walmart's shoddy standards! read more
