I went here for a smog inspection for my Ram 2500 diesel. I recently moved from a town not far…read moreaway, was happy to find another A-1 literally 2 minutes from our new home, to do our smogs. Front office staff was professional and nice, the wait was not terrible. It went downhill from there. I was approached in the waiting room with the news that the truck had not passed smog. OK it happens. But here it comes. Truck needed a NOX sensor replacement ($2,200 for parts and labor for this repair)- or did it? I was told that "9 out of 10 of these turn out to be the turbo, which would run more like $5,000 - $6,000." Wait - what? This Cummins has 140,000 miles on it. He smiled wisely and said he just went through the same thing with his dad's truck (I am 67 years old). Yep with his dad's truck it was the turbo - and it only had 65,000 miles on it. (Even though RAM has 100,000 mile warranties on these trucks.) There were also "a few other things" they found. The good news was the cost would only be $4,600 if the turbo was good - not the much higher amount most other shops would charge. OK long story short - I said no. I took the truck to the nearby RAM dealer. I showed them the estimate from A1 and they just shook their heads. They looked and found the NOX sensor was fully covered by a recall. They did check and thank goodness the turbo is fine (they did say it was probably down to its last 300,000 miles or so). I got the truck smogged elsewhere, because A-1 said I would have to pay for a new smog cert test. So, a $4,600 estimate (possibly $9,000 or more) ended up at $0. At a dealer.Problem solved. Smog passed. Lesson? Don't go to A-1 Smog on Market Street unless you just won the Lotto or have an extra $9,000 weighing you down that you need to get rid of. Oh - they were nice.

I had a choice I could pay for another smog and fix it myself, which would cost me just enough to make it not worth my time or I could let them do it. Upon returning to get the smog retest, they told us we would have to pay $48.50 for the retest, despite telling my sister and mom both in person and over the phone that the retest would be free. They NEVER said we would have to get the issues fixed through them for the smog retest to be free. They told both my mom and sister that the repairs would be up to $400. My mom and sister told them that we would fix it ourselves since the part is only $50 and charging $400 for it is absurd! Even then they told my mom and sister that the retest would be free after we fixed the issues OURSELVES. They never explicitly said that they had to fix the car for the retest to be free and they continued to argue with us when we returned and they tried to charge us the $48.50. This is a clear example of a scam, you legally cannot tell a customer a service will be free to then later try to charge them. Their rude and dismissive behavior is extremely unprofessional as well. The owner did nothing when we complained. DO NOT TRUST THEM WITH YOUR CARS OR MONEY!!!

Had to bring the car back twice to get an accurate diagnosis on the problem with my car. Although I had an appointment when I brought it in to have it repaired, I was told there's a chance they might not get to it that day. (It wasn't an urgent issue...why make an appointment if your schedule is full??) When I picked up my car after hours, the lockbox where my key was stored was left unlocked, and my car was also unlocked. And finally, after having my bakes serviced, the lug nut key was missing...requiring another trip back to the shop to pick it up. Overall, a frustrating experience.

I took my truck in for a speedometer fix and and air-conditioner fix. Paid over 800.00. I hadn't driven the truck much after I got it back. Had to make another appt to reprogram my stereo that was messed up when it was at fritz a week later and the truck air conditioner was blowing hot air. Made another appt with fritz and they charged me another 160.00 for finding the leak. I ask why I was paying a second time but I was told they had to charge for diagnosis. I was always told if you do it right the first time, you wouldn't have to do it over.
