I went here for a smog inspection for my Ram 2500 diesel. I recently moved from a town not far away, was happy to find another A-1 literally 2 minutes from our new home, to do our smogs. Front office staff was professional and nice, the wait was not terrible. It went downhill from there. I was approached in the waiting room with the news that the truck had not passed smog. OK it happens. But here it comes. Truck needed a NOX sensor replacement ($2,200 for parts and labor for this repair)- or did it? I was told that "9 out of 10 of these turn out to be the turbo, which would run more like $5,000 - $6,000." Wait - what? This Cummins has 140,000 miles on it. He smiled wisely and said he just went through the same thing with his dad's truck (I am 67 years old). Yep with his dad's truck it was the turbo - and it only had 65,000 miles on it. (Even though RAM has 100,000 mile warranties on these trucks.) There were also "a few other things" they found. The good news was the cost would only be $4,600 if the turbo was good - not the much higher amount most other shops would charge. OK long story short - I said no. I took the truck to the nearby RAM dealer. I showed them the estimate from A1 and they just shook their heads. They looked and found the NOX sensor was fully covered by a recall. They did check and thank goodness the turbo is fine (they did say it was probably down to its last 300,000 miles or so). I got the truck smogged elsewhere, because A-1 said I would have to pay for a new smog cert test. So, a $4,600 estimate (possibly $9,000 or more) ended up at $0. At a dealer.Problem solved. Smog passed. Lesson? Don't go to A-1 Smog on Market Street unless you just won the Lotto or have an extra $9,000 weighing you down that you need to get rid of. Oh - they were nice. read more

The front office staff kate, and the "newer" employee who i forgot her name, also make it such a pleasant experience. My husband asked me to make this review as he doesn't do computers much. He took his 91 F-250 to A-1 for a smog check. Truck had not been driven since 2008. It passed with flying colors. The only issue was the fuel caps ( duel tanks) that had deteriorated seals. The technician looked through his stuff and found 2 seals that worked, He replaced both at no extra charge, 5 stars 10 of 10 Thank You!! read more

Left my car running and went in to check in. The mechanic came out and tried to start my already running car twice making an awful sound. Not sure how someone that works on cars all day doesn't know when a car is running. The ac was on and you can hear my car on from the outside. It's not an electric car. My boyfriend approached him and asked him why he did that and he accused my boyfriend of trying to hide something. At least that's what I got from it. Asking why the car was running. Just trying to cover himself. My car passed smog knew it wouldn't have a problem. Just a bad experience with who was working on my car. Two stars because the younger front desk lady was very nice sweet! Would give 5 stars just for her. read more

A-1 Smog makes the DMV look like a five star experience. The front desk staff was annoyed that I was there, rude when I asked a question about the test and seemed overall completely apathetic to everyone. smog test engine light on. they could not figure out what was wrong wanted to tear half the motor apart to do a compression test. asked me do i want them to put it all back together if it fails this test./ of course not ,ill have triple a come tow it to scrap it out. soon after that they figured out it mass air flow sensor was bad, i had just replaced it. 600 dollars later i finally got it to pass smog, after reading other reviews on the brake and light test, ill go elsewhere, perhaps you should too. id be careful dealing with this place. read more

Went down on a Saturday to have the mechanic diagnose my truck. He said it was a simple repair and would cost about $200. fast-forward to Monday, I take the truck down to the shop and they start working on it. The employee tells me that they need to diagnose it. I tell them that their mechanic already diagnosed it on Saturday. They proceed to tell me that they need to diagnose it again and it's gonna be $200. I told them that the mechanic had already diagnosed the truck knows what it needs and said that it would be around $200. They also cleared my check engine light which caused me to have to drive around for miles and miles to get the monitors to reset. And when asked if they cleared the check engine code they denied it, when it was clearly obvious they did. So since I'm already locked in, I have them diagnose the truck. It cost me $200 to find out what I already know. I decided it was best to go somewhere else that actually has decent reviews and is reputable. So I went to Anderson Smog shop, where they diagnosed the truck (for free) and fixed it for 50$. There's a good bit of small stuff they did too that I didn't include here because it's too much to type. Long story short, save your time and money and go elsewhere. I was worried about the negative reviews this place has before I came in....this whole experience proved me right. Myself, my friends, and my family will no longer be used this place. A1 is not good, the negative reviews speak for themselves. read more

Took my truck to get a smog on Friday, May 31. Not a real issue with the failed smog but the mechanic did steal money from my console in my truck. Unfortunately it's not what you know, it's what you can prove. Being that money was stolen, I don't recommend this place due to the dishonest mechanic who smog tested my truck. Totally disrespectful and disappointing that low life people are allowed in strangers vehicles. I recommend removing anything of value so this particular mechanic doesn't steal from you. read more

Replaced E brake pads 597.00 going rate 275.00 replaced 5 bulbs that toke 10 mins 120.00 plus 20.00 for bulbs. Left Taillight had a bb hole 65.00 two on internet 37.00 free shipping. Left headlight was a little loose made me replace hole header bracket 165.00 internet 88.00 240.00 to install taken on hour of work. Wish I could upload bill you would not believe that Brent is that greedy estimate was less till they started working on it. I can say the mechanic was a very nice guy to bad you have to work there. Can I give a no star rating? I took my 1999 chevy box van there twice. 1st time it failed I get it. That's not the reason for the review. It's the second time I brought it in. Next time I came in it was 4pm and A1 wanted me to come back another day when I was well within business hours and they told me to come back another day. I told them I couldn't and insisted they look at it today. It's just a smog. As far as I know I dealt with a man named lee who spoke to me like I was an idiot. He interrogated me about where I bought the Catalytic converter and accused the business of selling me a 48 state legal catalytic converter saying I got suckered. Lee continued to talk down to me telling me I need to do a tune up and wires and cap and rotor on another day so the truck would pass. I RECOMMEND NOT USING THIS BUSINESS. We've been here twice in the last two years for our every other year smog certificate. Our car is older, and each time there were issues, due to age, requiring repairs. We were treated fairly, and the owners went out of their way to get the repairs completed a timely basis, and a passing smog test. We will return!! WARNING. Even if your vehicle passes smog on all emissions the owner of the shop will go out of his way to do a visual then run the numbers on your cats in the computer...then fail you if they've been replaced in the past and mark in the system as tampered. All this just to make his shop look good to the state. Seriously don't screw yourself by going here like we did. The cats on our truck are over 4 grand new right now and he failed them due to not matching the stock cats after we had been going here for over 5 years with the same cats and passing with flying colors. read more

Took a '90 Chevy in for smog, almost 45 minutes later they came out to tell me my oil cap was wrong. Left and purchased a new one, then had to wait another hour for the smog to be completed. Once completed, the key fob for the truck was mysteriously broken and the glued down dash mat was unstuck - WHY? Apparently the tech had no clue how any of it happened but I saw him slamming around and throwing up his hands in frustration, for what? Completely unprofessional, WILL NOT RETURN. read more

The family was in Redding on vacation. When we visited Lassen the driver side window rolled down and would not go back up. In 105F heat we had to drive back from Lassen. The next day we tried to get it fixed so we could get home. After two dealerships could not get us in we asked them for recommendations. They recommended this place. We showed up and explained the issue. They took us in immediately. The staff was so friendly. In 30 min they examined the issue. After getting a factory part they fixed the windows with a reasonable price. All within 2 hours. This place saved our family vacation. I cannot recommend them enough! Thanks! read more

They don't tell you what can fail your smog like smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe until after they charge you the $75.00. When they can see that it won't pass before they even drive it in and hook up the machine. And then laugh at their customers. Worst smog shop in Redding California. Would never recommend them at all. I trusted this shop to get my car fixed up after it broke down. I shouldn't have. I needed to get my car towed to a local shop near redding when my car broke down hundreds of miles from home. On the phone, they promised they would be able to get it fixed up within the day, but they took the majority of the day to diagnose a simple alternator failure. I had to stay at a hotel, and was promised once again my car would be ready the next day, likely ready by 10AM. They called at 8:45AM to get started on replacing the alternator, and I called back at 9 to give them the go-ahead. I called back around noon when the car should have been ready, and they hadn't even started on the car yet. I went to the shop and waited multiple hours with the time of completion being pushed back further and further. Overall, untrustworthy and untimely as a whole. Gabe seems to be a good employee who attempts to communicate transparently when asked about car conditions, but he did not tell the truth about one thing I asked him about. Nice guy, but very overambitious with what he and his crew can get done. Do not go here for auto work if you don't absolutely need to. Update: I took the car only 90 miles before the alternator, which I waited for so long to be replaced, gave out on me. I was stranded until I could be picked up 4 hours later on the side of the highway and had to get the car towed to another shop on my own. This is the worst experience I have ever had with any business. read more

I have been here sense 12:10 today. For a 1 minute calibration for intoxilock. 1 guy here today that's certified to do my calibration decided to do all the smog customers first. Including everyone that got here after me. I even heard him when he was leaving say when told him I've been waiting "I dont care". I'll never come back here. Not only do I hate intoxilock I now have a headache and feel like I'm going to puke. Due to sitting in my car for over 3 hours. Because he "didn't care"! read more

The woman who answered the phone was very nice and personable. She informed me that an appt. wasn't necessary. Came early the next day and was greeted with a nice smile and was informed that they would give me an early bird discount. How nice. Didn't ask for it, it was just offered. Nice. It took a little longer then I expected but, then again, I asked them to install new wiper blades and wiper blades on my car are a bit tricky. All in, it took about 40 minutes. I brought my 1999 Ford Ranger truck into A1 on 8/10/22 for a smog certificate. It did not pass because my truck had sat idle in my garage for over a year, which depletes important engine running / smog information the computer saves. A1 staff told me to take the truck for a long drive, with plenty of stop lights as well as 45 mph speeds, so I drove Market Street out to the Fairgrounds and back. A1 offers one free retest if the vehical does not pass the first time. I brought my truck back in and it passed smog with no issues. I took my rig here to get it smogged so that I can re-register it. Sign on the wall says to tell them if your check engine light is on. It is, so I let Harried Female #1 know. She resets the circuit, tells me to buy a new gas cap, and come back in the morning. (There are also several signs on the walls telling you where to stick your bad attitude and so forth -- which, in retrospect, ought to have served as a warning. If you're feeling the need to hang multiple signs in your place of business telling your customers to fuck off with their negative attitudes, maybe it's you.) I return in the morning, having purchased the new gas cap. After a 1.5-hour wait, Harried Female #2 tells me that my rig has failed its smog test. After I tell her about my encounter with HF #1, HF #2 tells me that I need to drive around town for a day at speeds between 25-55 mph with my gas tank between 1/4 and 3/4 full so that the circuits that were reset can recalibrate. Come back tomorrow. That will be $45. I come back two days later. HF #2 again. After a 1.25-hour wait, she says my rig has passed. That will be $45. I'm like, "I already paid." She's like (looking at computer and work order), "No you didn't." So I go fish the previous work order from my rig, which is stamped "PAID" and has a $45 receipt attached to it. She's like, "Huh. I wonder why......so that makes it $35 for a re-test." I ask HF#2 why I have to pay again, because I wouldn't have brought it in for the first test if HF #1 had told me that I needed to drive my rig around for a day or so under the above-stated conditions. HF #2 says, "She didn't?" I'm like, "No, she didn't." HF #2 says, "Well, the good news is that the re-test is only $35." So the total is $80. And by the way, one of the many signs in the office says that the cost of a failed test is $16, so WTF, man. But I just spent 1.25 hours in the small waiting room with a 4-year-old who desperately needed double the normal dose of Ritalin, and I was DONE. Paying the $35 was like a trapped coyote chewing his foot off to escape. Worse than the extra expense, I spent about 3 hours in the joint. Enough time to observe that hardly anyone passes their smog test here. Seems there's always some little thing that needs to be addressed and then tested again. I've had vehicles smogged elsewhere, and: (1) I've never failed a test or seen anyone else fail a test anywhere else, and (2) I've never waited over a half-hour to get tested anywhere else. This place seems hella shady. Like, total-eclipse-of-the-sun shady. Like, closed-canopy-rainforest-under-a-cloudy-sky shady. Like, one-mile-below-the-surface-of-the-Earth-in-a-limestone-cave shady. Addendum #1: If you want to replace "harried female" with "bitch-faced megabitch," be my guest. Addendum #2: Read the unrecommended reviews. Believe them. read more

I had a great experience with them. I'm surprised at the bad review below, because they were so helpful and kind to me. The lady behind the counter, I don't remember her name, but she is such a sweetheart. I'd never had my car smogged before (but I've been ripped off before, so I know the earmarks) so I asked around for quite a while before picking A-1. The day that I went, they were PACKED with cars. Just packed. When I pulled in, they told me they didn't have any more room for another appointment. I was really bummed out because I needed to complete the check so I could register my car. I was ready to drive away, but they decided to just do my car anyway! How kind is that? The lady behind the desk kept me company while I waited, and was very kind. I could watch the mechanic through the glass windows, and it was just a very simple, fast job. They actually found a coupon for me and gave me like five or ten dollars off, and I left feeling very happy and very pleased with my experience. I will be going back. read more

Everyone working here was very kind and helpful with the process, there were some hiccups along the way but they did their best to make sure the job was done and done right. After trying 4 other smog stations and failing to get a certification, I brought my rv to A1 Smog. I explained what had happened at the other smog shops.
