Got a check engine light on my truck last night. It was indicating a misfire. 2022 F150 PowerBoost. Called Underhood Automotive this morning at 8:30, Chris told me he could get it in this morning. Arrived at the shop, and before Chris was done with the paperwork, it was already diagnosed as a misfire on cylinder five. Spark plug coil needed replaced. Since I was at 85,000 miles I had them replace the spark plugs also. He told me it would take about two hours and I had nothing to better do so I waited. An hour later I was in my truck headed home. 10% discount also. Great business, great service, great guys. Highly recommend this business. my wife was so impressed with the service. They overcharge for their labor, they pad their work orders, and use a text service to "check up on customers" that either does not send Underhood the replies or they simply do not care to answer. How do I know? Because this is the story of how a 31 year old woman with cancer now has her only car out of commission in her garage since as soon as the 1 year mark on their warranty ended, they couldn't do anything to help. We brought our Cadillac (also, do not recommend the brand because I've had nothing but problems with these vehicles; I miss my Audi) in to this location based off a family recommendation who is a mechanic himself. Must be good then, right? Not so much. One of my own friends heard how much I paid for what they did and he cackled at how I got ripped off, and he is a service manager for John Deere in Colorado, so I would hope he knows. And he was right. When we started having problems with the car back during the winter, my partner (who is a former service writer and has been in and out of the car industry) was furious when he saw how they had padded the RO. He was busy with work, so asked me to reach out. My only issue was that I was working full time, was dealing with some major health issues, and we have a 4 year old. So, when they happened to text me around that time, I thought it was perfect timing! I texted "Jamie" back to tell him that we seemed to be having some issues and needed to know if we could have it brought in to be looked at since everything should still be under warranty. But again, I was busy and should have made sure to look back, sure. Fast forward through multiple hospital visits and stays on my part, my partner having to figure out how to be a single parent without me there to pick up the other half, and a lot of behavioral issues because Mommy isn't there to help, and my partner hasn't realized we haven't heard from Underhood. Mind you, this man has now lost 2 jobs because he was more concerned about his family's wellbeing than showing up and clocking in, so he's got his hands filled with finally landing a job that cares about YOU, not just what you can do for them at a low wage, and watching over his family. He against asks me what is going on with it, and I told him I've texted them but haven't had the time to call. He says he will try, but I say I will handle it. I call in and I'm not sure who answers the phone, but he sounded older than myself. He talked down to me, and when I turned the narrative around on him to not be treated like an idiot (I was an Area Sales Manager of the Greater Sacramento Area at one point), and asked whether or not they were going to look at my car since they had never answered their text messages and I have been too busy being in and out of the hospital with cancer, or if I was screwed because of a stupid warranty. He sputtered, trying to figure out what to say. So I asked again "can you help me or not since the warranty is invalid?" And he said "well, no, I guess not." Now, mind you, when I lived in Sacramento, I had an auto shop across the street from me that had a different car of mine for 3 MONTHS, but they only charged me for the initial visit, because they wanted to know why what they were fixing was not actually fixing the car. They ended up moving to a bigger shop because of that kind of mindset. Situational kindness and owning their own mistakes. This place? Yeah, they rely on their location to bring in the idiots that don't know up from down, and lack any common sense to turn a profit. Or the ones that don't want to make a fuss, so they just sit down and take this capitalism crap. I pray for all y'all's grandparents bringing their cars in here. Small town support isn't the issue. I took my Nissan hardbody for a roadtrip from Oakland to Portland- and overheated in Redding. Bummer scenario... broken down in a town I'm not familiar, and a sitting duck for a mechanic to take advantage of a traveler needing to get somewhere. It was obvious I had cracked the radiator and needed a replacement. First, called my personal mechanic at A.J. Nissan to see what he would charge me for the replacement. Then called Jamie at Underhood for a quote. Not only was the quote the same and fair, but Jamie gave me the guidance to McGuyver things up on the truck for a couple miles to make it to him so I wouldn't need a tow and get there afterhours. By the time I arrived it was 4:50pm, right before they closed. Jamie ordered the part then and there, had it first thing in the AM- and the radiator was replaced and we were on the road no problem by 10:30am. Fantastic. Truck is holding up no problems. I wish he were local where I live in Oakland! The icing on the cake: since we had to make new accommodations to stay the nite in Redding...Jamie drove us to AND picked us up from the hotel we stayed at. Thanks so much Jamie! Even after repairs were performed I had issues with some fraud on my bank account and they were very understanding and worked with while I went through a program to help me get my truck paid out and picked up. They actually seem to care about the customer genuinely even checking in with you on the worked performed after vehicle has been picked up. Cant express how good that feels. This place has a few things going for it. They're fast (same day fast), and friendly (Jamie is a nice gentlemen to work with) for the most part. I've been going there for years now. While I do realize that virtually every mechanic marks up prices on their parts, I've always felt that the markup of their prices is especially high considering the original cost, and Underhood refuses to use parts they don't purchase themselves. Why would they when they can mark them up hundreds of dollars? They claim it's because the parts can't be warrantied by them, and if that's the case fine, but why not give the customer the option? A month before the belt work I had had a fuel pump installed to the tune of $600 dollars. A fuel pump I was charged $427.59 costs that same price at O'Reily's for $249.99. I $177.00 markup seems a little outrageous. That being said, I recently went in for some repairs and was charged about 450 dollars for the work, mainly replacing belts and some of the parts needed to make them run efficiently such as a pulley and harmonic balancer. Not more than a couple weeks later, one of the belts comes off the engine while I'm driving. The problem was, it was the weekend--they were closed. I had to take my car to a place that was open and ended up spending another hundred to get the belt fixed again. When I called Underhood to ask for some sort of restitution for the work they had done--that came apart no more than a month later--, they said they couldn't. They did offer to let me bring my car in to check it out, but the problem had already been fixed by that point by the other mechanic and my confidence in Underhood had dropped considerably (another time after they had done work on the engine I noticed they didn't screw down some of the bolts). The other shop told me the wrong size belt had been used and that's what caused the issue. At any rate, you would think they would have given me some sort of refund but nope. I'm sorry to say that I can't recommend this place anymore unless you have no other choice. Pros: Same day service and the owner is a friendly guy Cons: Parts markup is way too high and obviously they won't do any type of refund if their repairs aren't solid. read more

Jaime was very friendly and thorough when explaining what needed to be replaced and why, and even gave me great tips to prevent future problems. While driving from Olympia WA to San Francisco CA, my air conditioner went out...it was about 106 degrees in Redding. (Insert obscenity here) I was 13 miles from Redding so I thought I would stop for lunch, and then check the coolant..and buy some if need by at an auto supply store. Initially annoyed because we had recently changed the oil...please don't tell me Firestone forgot to top of my fluids AGAIN! Well after I stopped for lunch...the car was making a really loud noise. Unfamiliar with the area I drove to the first garage I saw. Underhood Automotive. I usually dig private business over chain shops so, I was pleased to find them first. Jamie helped me. He looked at it and said the compressor went out, and its about a 6hr job that he could start Monday. -This was after 3pm on a Friday. (insert obscenities here!!!) Not his fault...it just sucked. Then I asked for the price. $1,200 parts and labor (insert more obscenities here!) Well not like I had 1,200 dollars laying around and I was stranded. I got a rental car to drive to SF. and asked him if he could keep the car over the weekend or even a few weeks until I could come back to pick it up after the repairs....while I find a way to pay for it. He was very nice and said he would not charge a storage fee. He said that he estimated high so there wouldn't be any surprises. He suspected it may be 100 dollars less. We came up with the full 1,200 on Monday and he started the work...then called my husband to say he made a mistake and it would be 1,300.00. for an additional part that needs replacement Oh geeze that sucks, but okay. So my husband found another hundred to move into our account....then Jamie called again saying, "oops I meant to say 1,366." So my husband said um...no. (Somewhere in between he had called me and quoted 1366. So maybe he forgot he told one of us but not the other?) So he agreed to do the job for 1,300. My husband thinks he tried to get more money because our car was stranded. I think he just made a mistake. Lets take a poll! All who think I am right message me. All who think husband is right message me. I'll display results as they come in. *you know you are on my side ;)* By Tuesday the car was finished and I drove from SF to Redding to get the car, then back to SF. Yeah. that sucked. C'est la vie. Thursday morning I called to get my pickup in to get the timing set. All else was good. They wanted to wait until after the 4th , Tuesday. I told them I couldn't wait , it is imperative that it be done that day so I could get to work Friday. They agreed to do it, I had the pickup towed in .I called to check on the arrival, it was in and they wanted to do a 30 -minute diagnostic, I agreed. They close at 5 and I hadn't heard from the at 4:45, so I called. They said they couldn't get it done and wanted to hold it until Tuesday. I told them no I need it for work on Friday. I will pick it up. I arrived to settle up . He said they had pushed the pick up out (nose toward the fence). After much hem -hawing staring at the computer,Jamie said he wouldn't charge me (for doing nothing.) I made it very clear from the beginning ,that all I wanted was timed. , nothing else. I went out to start the pickup, which by the way was running when it left my house on the tow,truck. The battery was dead. So I went home got my power pack and went back started it and took it to another mechanic He had it running in a couple of hours. I tried to call this morning (Tuesday)to see why the battery was dead and to let them know that I got it taken care of ok. They put me on hold waiting for Jamie to take my call. Nope, he didn't come to the phone. After about 10 minutes. I did hang up. Guess they knew I figured out their game of draining a new battery in order to make me wait until Tuesday All they had to do was tell me from the beginning that Tuesday was the only time they could do it. Jaime and his crew really took care of us, again. This trip we brought in our Suzuki XL7 because it was idling very very high and wouldn't go into gear correctly. Jaime did not try to upsell us on anything and, in fact, was able to simply clean the part (sensor) causing the issue rather than selling us a new $200 one. He's always looking to do what's best for the customer and not just line his wallet. We've taken a couple of our other cars into him in the past, as well, and gotten the same great treatment. We had an appointment for a smog check. We were in & out in approx. 15 minutes. Wow! What great service. While we were there, another customer came in, their brakes went out on their van, on their trip back to Washington. The owner offered to take them & pick them up from their hotel here in Redding, when their van was ready. They were going to do everything they could to get the van repaired as soon as possible. That's what I call, going the extra mile. I would recommend "Underhood Automotive" to everyone one who still believes in getting good service. took my truck in for a clicking sound when starting and told them to tighten belts. I was there at 800 am. I was told problem fix come get it at 1pm I was chargerd $101 and the clicking was still there. So they charged me for tightening exhaust bracket and tightening belts but the clicking was still there (problem not fixed) 3 of their techs couldn't figure it out. Our company truck is there too but that will change very soon and never to return. Ps If your trying to right a review on their page It wont let you write Bad reviews (so probably fake reviews ALLWAYS check yelp first . I had the similar problem with aamco transmissions. the good news i won a law suit against ammco. these guys are just lucky it was 100 they took me for. just not enough to go to court over. I went in to get a bad wheel bearing replaced. I decided to buy my own part to save and just have them do the labor. The mechanic was friendly and fast, in fact he finished the job in less than an hour (although this shop charges by the inflated book price so I paid for 1.9 hours). The problem is that the machine shop decided my hub was bad too. The guy who runs the front said he could get parts together since the machine shop was next to NAPA so I decided to go with the parts they ordered. When the old hub came back to the shop I thought it looked fine. He tried to tell me that it was bad, that he had to go by what the machine shop said, and that he had not marked up the price of the part anyway. Turns out the hub was fine. 2 shops told me so and the machine shop admitted that it was just slightly worn. It is sad because I paid for something I feel I shouldn't have. I went back to Underhood to see what the front (so called christian) counter guy could do since I bought the parts from him. Apparently, coming in to ask is a huge insult to him. I was berated and "how dare I try to bring in my own parts", besides the point since I ended up buying the parts from him anyway. He was verbally abusive, shouting and refused to talk to me about the actual issue. He kept asking me irrelevant and inappropriate questions and ended up calling me a "cheap stupid @#&!*". I was never actually given a written work order estimate which is against the law. I was also charged to dispose of the parts I took with me. Beware. This front counter guy will rip you off if you let him. He belongs somewhere away from the public or in anger management. My front end seems to be good though. Too bad about the unnecessary hub expense and waste not to mention the horrible way I was treated. He will chase all the repeat customers away. read more

Tried to get smog here after doing it here 2 other times. They would not do it because they seen wires that had nothing to do with the performance, and were Cal compliant. After recommending many customers to them, I will not ever go back. They said they just wernt sure or comfortable about the wires. My "service engine soon" light came on so I phoned Underhood Automotive for a quote on a diagnostic test. Best quote in town! However, my light then went off I called to cancel the appointment and the man said to bring it on up anyway and they'd take a look anyway and if there was a problem then we'd talk price to fix. I had no problem so the diagnostic test was comped. I will definitely take my Ford Escort back to them if I have any further warning lights come on. I went underhood automotive to have a water pump replaced and all the water hoses replaced.before any work was done I told the sevice guy that the compressor was bad on the air conditioner and that it not hooked up so dont hook it up guess what they did they hooked up while at home I recieved several phone calls from underhood trying to sell me an air conditioner job for 1800 dollars.I told underhood I knew the compresor was bad and it wasnt hooked up to serpentine belt when I brought my car in so dont hook it up I stated this to underhood several times.also undrerhood broke my ignition I had to take it to talor motors to get it fixed it cost me 479 dollars to fix undehoods mistake and its gonna cost me another 300 dollars to fix my serpentine belt.I took my car back to underhood to take the belt off the compressor and the called me a liar the belt was always on the compressor.underhood does not stand behind their work and also will prey on your fears try to sell work thats not needed .a 500 dollar job will cost you in the long run if you go to underhood auto inc.
