Dr. Blende and his superior dentists, techs and front desk rescued me a couple of years ago when I needed many crowns due to old fillings, but with a lower jaw unable to get numb with lidocaine. Add to that I've developed severe dental phobia and fear over the years. Dr. Blende examined me the first visit and it was the first time in the dental chair I felt comfortable and relaxed. They specialize in working with patients with special needs, dental phobia and home-bound adults. Dr. Blende is the only dentist who offers IV Sedation (not "conscious sedation which is half-awake/half asleep)--the only option for me as I cannot have any work done on my bottom teeth without being fully sedated. As a patient of Dr. Blende, and at the age of 69, I have finally experienced calm and trust at the dentist. Dr. Goodman, Lily and the other staff are consistently gentle, understanding, compassionate and keenly trained to work with dental and needle phobes like me. I had a minor/periodic toothache over 2-3 days. It was likely due to a tooth that had a slight crack, which Dr. Blende had caught years ago & had referred me to a great orthodontist. That orthodontist recommended to keep an eye on it. I always love medical professionals who would only suggest surgery as a last resort. Fast forward a few years, and voila. I called Dr. Blende & Reagan answered the phone. She was patient, knowledgeable, and went through my file (very thick since I've been a patient of The Blende Dental Group for 3 decades). She then said she'd consult Dr. Blende. He would look at my x-ray & get back to me. Within an hour, I heard back. I was asked to bite down & see if the side of my toothache had met the upper teeth faster than the other side. It was! This happens, they explained, as our teeth move all the time. My mother is almost 80 years old. After a plan was made for her dental problems Dr. Blende wanted her to pay him a deposit of $ 25,000 which was for future work . She all ready had seen Dr. Blende several times and paid after each visit. Dr. Blende received a deposit of $25,000 from my mother . After a couple months she was not satisfied with Dr. Blende's work so she went to a different Dentist . She called Dr. Blende to let him know her decision and asked him to refund her unused deposit. Dr. Blende said he would send her a check. Several months passed and she still had not received her deposit. She sent several certified letters and called over the next year and still no refund. She ended up having to hire a Lawyer and in the end Dr. Blende only refunded my elderly mother $ 10,000 , which the Lawyer costs were deducted from. The office staff did not help my mother in anyway, they would not even return any calls. Dont waste your time with this Dentist. My Mother ended up getting much better Dental work done for less money and didnt have to pay any more $ 25,000 deposits . Use at your own risk. read more

I have been a patient for almost 40 years. When you are in the seat with Dr. Blende or one of his remarkable (and HOT! I might add), dentists and staff, you are cared for at the highest level. Each person I have met over time, is kind, informative, SO highly trained and very professional. I have had just about every dental event that a mid-60's person might have, including a very involved surgical event. The Blende Dental group were with me before during and after them all. The crowns in my mouth are always complemented when I see another dental professional, as I now live out of the country. My 14 year old daughter had extensive dental work last month and she needed to go under general anesthesia. The procedure costs 16, 000 dollars which I had to pay and take out a loan for before the procedure was done. On the day of the procedure, I was told she needed a crown and it was going to cost another $2,200. When I raised a raucous about that, then Blende tells me, he now sees it in the treatment plan. It became very apparent to me that Blende is more interested in money than anything else. Today, my daughter got a permanent crown placed. She was in pain and Blende told her " Dont't cry wolf" She had tears streaming down her face. She wasn't shouting or screaming. Each of us have different pain thresholds. To discard my daughter's feelings is wrong. After we walked out of the appointment, she told me what he said. I was upset and shocked that a healthcare professional would talk to a patient like this. I called the office and left a message with the answering service as we were the last appt of the day. An hour later I get a call from Blende. He left a message on my voicemail apologizing and asking me not to leave a negative yelp review. His "apology" was done only because he was worried about getting a negative yelp review. He didn't care about my daughter or her feelings. He should be more compassionate and kind to patients especially to kids. His office staff is very kind but Blende needs a lesson on how to understand that each person reacts to pain differently and not downplay, beret or belittle those patients who are expressing pain. Really recommend another dentist in SF and avoid Dr. Blende especially if you have kids that need to go under general anesthesia. Also I know dentists are not cheap, but his rates and prices are exorbitant. My daughter needed extensive dental work due to teeth overcrowding and decay and several cavities as a result but he demanded payment up front which was $16,000. Referred here in 2018 due to an extreme gag reflex and a lot of dental work needing to be done. Was given a quote of $30K which my parents and I came up with and paid day of surgery. Because the surgery ended up lasting 6.5 hours rather than the 4 estimated, the first thing I woke to ( with my arm spasming, I doubt they supported it for the hours I was under) was the Office Manager, Nikki, asking my father "I have her purse, can I look for the credit card to pay the $8K balance now due?" My father took the purse and refused her. No call from their office the next day to ask how I was doing but Nikki did call to ask about their $8K due. When I asked about the comment she made about taking a card from my purse she laughed and said I must have still been out of it. Well except my father heard the same thing as he was back with me as I woke. We paid the amount due at the time of my surgery. It shouldn't be on anyone but the practice that they estimated and planned poorly to the tune of $8K extra. My requests for what exactly the extra $8K covered were not answered. I received a bill for the $8K in 2020, which I am paying $100/month so it doesn't affect my credit but I still feel it was a bait and switch job to further line their pockets. The work done was good but the bedside manner and aftercare was truly awful. And they made sure I knew 2 days post surgery (when my throat was still too swollen to take pain pills or antibiotics or drink water) their concern was getting more money out of me, not my well being. This entire office is phenomenal! I have been here twice for cleanings and have had my wisdom teeth extracted including work by Dr. Goodman and Dr. Blende himself. I have also brought both of my kids here for cleanings. Honestly, I am not impressed often from medical practices because they typically are run inefficiently- not this group. I was taken back on time, I interacted with several friendly receptionists, and I had a very thorough but efficient cleaning from Tanvi. I was never rushed and Dr. Blende and Tanvi spent extra time explaining the x rays and dental work particulars. This is not a pediatric practice but they were great with both my girls. Between the dentists and the hygienist, I cannot recommendation this practice enough. My only draw back which is minor is the WiFi reception was not spectacular, but they did have an IT person there at the time of my last appointment fixing their network. When loved ones have medical or dental issues, it almost always is not a good thing. After a five-star experience for another loved one, due to my relative's health condition, I was hard pressed to find someone to provide in-home dental services. Through a referral, I learned about Blende and called them in getting an appointment early this year. Because my relative hadn't been examined for the better part of two years, it was a mystery as to the extent of work that would be needed. After completing a variety of forms, answering a questionnaire about the patient, and arranging the patient's history to be provided, I was able to schedule an appointment about two weeks later on a weekday morning. Dr. Goodman and her technician (forgive me for forgetting your name) arrived promptly at the appointment time. After moving their equipment, devices, and tools to the lower portion of the house, they patiently and thoroughly examined the patient in evaluating what needed to be done. Nutshell, they needed to extract a tooth as there was some deterioration that spread onto his gums. Working under unusual circumstances, they were able to correct all of the issues and gave us thorough advice how to treat his mouth during the healing process. Kudos to Dr. Goodman and her assistant in saving the day and, in my relative's case, teeth and gums. Recently got an email from them that they are available during shelter in place. However, they require that the patient(s) pass a Covid test before they will begin work on you. read more

Four years ago, I saw David Blende for an extraction. I'm a disabled woman on a limited income. He told me I needed a bridge. He dry drilled both "healthy" "virgin" (according the the California Dental Board) to fit the bridge, resulting in the death of both teeth within months. I spent money I didn't have trying to save them. Because of the extensive damage and number of lost teeth from his negligence, I now need partial dentures at FIFTY TWO YEARS OF AGE. He was SANCTIONED by the Attorney General of CA. Check into it. I don't even have money to afford the partial dentures. I had healthy teeth when I went in. Now look. He bullied me with his attorneys so he wouldn't lose his license and never compensated me. This man is a monster. He was sanctioned, check with the Attorney General of CA and the CA Dental Board. These lost teeth are deeply embarrassing as well as the fact that I can't eat. And he put me back four years in bone health treatment. I hope there is a special place in hell for him. I was told by a previous dentist that I had a minor crack in one of my back teeth. They said it wasn't anything severe and it should be monitored closely. A period of time went by and after delivering my first child I decided to be proactive and get it taken care of before my maternity leave ended and most importantly before I started experiencing any discomfort. I was referred to Blende Dental Group because I am highly sensitive to any dental work outside of a teeth cleaning and to be honest I was quite nervous and scared. Dr. Blende had a comforting manner about him, although he was a bit pompous. I was eager to get the work done and was pleased that they offered gas. Many dentists that I called did not and in the past I have not responded to novocaine alone. When he said he could start the process on the spot I said yes. Unfortunately the work that I had done has been the worst I have ever experienced. A ligajet was used to numb the tooth that needed a crown. I was quite happy that I didn't feel a thing, GREAT! I was told I would be sore for a few days, okay, no problem. The truth is I was in EXTREME pain for almost two weeks. The pain was so excruciating I was taking Tylenol every 4 hours around the clock. This went on for days. When I called the office they did invite me back, rinsed the tooth and sent me on my way. I called again and told the office I was desperate and something was not right with the temporary tooth. I even said I would pay a rush fee for the crown. No luck. At this point I was concerned for the health of my liver and all the Tylenol I was taking. The pain was so severe, worse than a C -Section! Once the crown was ready they ended up filing down one of my top teeth to adjust the bite, so now I have what feels like half a tooth on the top. I also ended up having to go somewhere else because I was having sensitivity biting down and sensitivity to hot and cold on the tooth with the crown. The dentist I found helped temporarily but here I am year later with discomfort. I haven't eaten on the right side of my mouth for practically a year. I now need a ROOT CANAL. I don't know what went wrong but I had no pain or issue with my tooth prior to coming here. I am absolutely devastated because I wanted to take care of this before it became an issue and now I have an even bigger issue. read more

This review is for just my phone conversation and inquiry with Blende Dental Group. I reached out to Blende Dental, because I was looking for someone who could help me and provide complete dental care for my son with disabilities. Many places just do the bare minimum and don't provide endodontics, or restorative work for clients with disabilities. The person I spoke with was so helpful and so confident that they could provide the care my son needed. She was very informative and did not try to rush through the discussion and was very understanding about our situation. This is a pay for service office, which means that you pay for the entire service up front at the time of service and then you would need to request any reimbursement from your insurance carrier. They were very transparent about this. Just before his appointment I got sick, so could not take him. Our pediatrician then found another option for us to explore that would utilize our insurance up front. We have since decided to go that route, but if at some point the current dentist is not able to provide/or find a resource for a treatment that our son needs, I would not hesitate to reach out to Blende Dental for a consultation. read more

He knows how to save teeth that other dentists would not. My son has Angelman Syndrome, which is on the autism spectrum, and they effectively navigated his refusals and non-verbal behavioral difficulties. Although they don't take insurance directly, they are able and willing to obtain pre-approval for Medi-Cal to cover the entire hospital fee and anesthesia, which probably saves us $10,000 to $20,000. I heard about Blende through one of their dentists, Dr. Goultas, that I personally know. The hygienists and dental assistants there are so pleasant! I definitely think being friendly in this field makes the experience more pleasant for patients (especially those who maybe dread the dentist haha). Dr. Goultas himself is very thorough, clear, and personable as well. I did meet Dr. Blende for a hot sec, and he seems like a sweet guy :) My review is short of 5 stars as there've been some hick-ups with the front desk staff. I will call-out that they were flexible with taking my payment for services a week later than planned which I very much appreciate! On that note, the day of payment I was expending ~$2,200 to be the posted payment amount. However, ~$3,000 was posted as the payment. This was news to me, and I wasn't proactive informed by their office around this new amount. The next business day, I called in myself to inquire about the ~$3,000 payment and was told it was an accident and they would refund me for the ~$800. No apology was included in these comms, which is unprofessional and lacks empathy imo. Fortunately I had the funds to cover the larger than expected transaction, but the lack of apology or empathy didn't strike me well initially. The following day, I called back to request a receipt for the payment to be emailed to me. During this call, I was informed my refund would be ~$500 (versus the initially comminuted ~$800) as they forgot to include another cleaning fee in the payment. Again, no apology or empathy was expressed with their oversight. While they've been flexible with spacing out my payment given that I know Dr. Goultas, I don't think it's acceptable to 1) not proactively communicate billing errors to the patient and 2) apologize for their oversight. With having incurred 2 billing oversights with the front desk, I will for sure keep a close eye on my billing and insurance claims with them. I hope this feedback serves as a learning opportunity for the team. Lastly, to be clear, the front desk has always been pleasant and kind in comms. I hope moving forward they can be more sensitive to conversations including large amounts of money. I struggled with whether to include 4 or 3 starts in my review, because the care there is wonderful, but the financial aspect is still important (to me, at least), and don't think it should be understated. read more

WOW. WHAT A BAIT AND SWITCH PRACTICE. So back in February 2017, i went and got my xrays and teeth cleaning done by my dentist and she referred me to Dr. Blende for some simple dental procedures (I had cavities that needed to be filled) since I have anxiety with drills etc. In March 2017, I make an appointment for a consult and talk to Monica who scheduled my appointment to have Dr. Blende look over my teeth. On the phone during the time I made my appointment, I also told her I just saw my dentist and had xrays done and forwarded those to her. The day of the appointment, everything seemed great, they looked at my xrays and said they needed more pictures so they took pictures and additional xrays, told me to relax, made me feel like everything was all good. Monica walks me through the cost of the procedures after the consult and I leave with a packet and the understanding that I needed to see other dentists before making a decision because I wanted to see what my options were. Fast forward to April 2017, I actually decided to go with another dentist and I emailed Monica to let her know and she never responds. Instead, I get a $300 bill in the mail and under "description," it's just blank. Okay, so...I made an appointment for a consult and you didn't disclose there was a charge..you told me I needed MORE x-rays and pictures and didn't disclose there was a charge. We go over the actual cost of procedures and paperwork and NO MENTION OR DISCLOSURE OF THIS CHARGE and out of no where, when I decide to go with a better option for me..I get a bill!? I don't mind paying for services but I left the office with nothing done and no additional materials passed over to me. I also wasn't told upfront about any charges which, is crazy because when I went to my other options, it was either free OR they DISCLOSED UPFRONT that I'd be charged $50 WHICH I PAID because WE AGREED PRIOR. This almost feels like repercussion for not going to the Blende Dental Group and I find the fact that they're not forthcoming about costs to be incredibly shady and I'm thankful I didn't end up going with them for the services because this bills proves they would have found extra ways to charge me. I am still waiting for their office to get back to be on what these charges were for since the description literally is blank. When I called to ask why I was being charged, the representative said it could be for x-rays..I already gave you x-rays from TWO MONTHS AGO from my dentist. What an AWFUL EXPERIENCE! My son is 6 years old, non-verbal with ASD. Going to the dentist has always been a challenge. We kept up with all his checkups and cleanings. But when when we were recommend he need some major work done, and be put under, due to compliance, I wasn't satisfied just going anywhere. We were going to a pediatric dentist but wasn't happy with the process and wasn't feeling 100% I went to the Blende Dental though a recommendation of my cousin. They were professional from the start. They have everything in house and explained the need, why, options, the procedure and billing. I felt assured and at ease. It wasn't cheap, but the billing is very knowledgeable and help you navigate through the insurance. They did the procedure at Kaiser in SF where we are already clients. The dentist and staff were stellar. They put our worries at ease. It was the best case senario. Nothing major. He was a little sleepy but thanks to the gentle hands of the dentist he didn't even need a Tylenol after. On July 4 I cracked a molar tooth while eating dinner. My wife made an appointment with the Blende Group. I was seen on July 6 by Dr Goodman who informed me I needed a crown (but no root canal). I came in July 7 for the dental work and was seen by Dr Chau. The group has an in house dental lab. I came back on July 26 for the crown. I am very happy with my crown. Dr. Blende was EXTREMELY HELPFUL this evening. My mother experienced a dental emergency 12 hours prior to having to catch a flight in the early morning. Friday night, 7:00 pm... no back teeth because her bridge fell out of her mouth. After calling around, we came across the Blende Dental Group AFTER HOURS NUMBER 877-HOUSE-07 (1-877-468-7307)), and with guidance from Dr. Blende himself, we were able to fix the problem at home. He was so kind and informative, and presented us with multiple options. One option involved meeting at the office around 10 pm to perform emergency dental work and two at home solutions. Given that we are located several hours away and were working on a limited time frame, we chose one of the at home solutions with detailed instruction from Dr. Blende. He even checked in on us after we completed the steps. My mother is currently feeling much better and ready to leave for her vacation with a HUGE SMILE thanks to Dr. Blende. read more

Do not go to Blende Dental if you have a severe fear of the dentist. They will convince you to spend more money then necessary through making you feel guilty and afraid. They will turn your own fear against you. They suggested an expensive plan as a temporary fix knowing it would, in the very near future, cause me to undergo more treatments. That heaped on the money for them and anxiety for me. Additionally, they expect me to have a coherent conversation about this while in terrible fear and loaded on anti-anxiety/sedative pills. I'm not afraid to admit I cry hysterically and would say anything to stop the torture i feel at the dentist. I get physically sick and hyperventilate walking into the office. They have me waiting for phone calls over and over which makes me relive my visits with a nauseas anticipation. I would almost call it sadistic. ----------------------- There was one woman with short red-hair who was very kind to me when re-glueing something. The reception people are okay, but mostly because they know the point at which I might need another anti-anxiety pill or some water and probably feel bad for me when I look so pathetically scared. But for the most part, these people do not demonstrate an understanding of my condition. Especially not Dr. Blende. I am convinced it is the salaries that fool most of these people into thinking that they are qualified to handle people with serious "Dental Phobia." read more

My father suffers from late stage Alzheimer's and woke up one day suffering from a serious tooth abscess. After visiting the hospital and my typical dentist we were finally referred to Dr. Blende's office. The were able to make an appointment with fairly short notice and upon arrival it became apparent they very familiar with dealing with patients who's mental capacity is impaired. They were extremely caring and concerned. The email and phone call correspondence was consistent and prompt with Elisabeth, and even had access to an after hours Dr. for some questions when we were concerned late one night to his condition. After the initial exam they scheduled a full sedation procedure and dental surgery in collaboration with Kaiser. Dr. Blende and his team were able to extract 3 teeth and have 18 fillings done; essentially reconstructing my father's mouth in less than 3 hours while he was under sedation. Due to the stress of the entire experience they expressed the idea that this would be his last dental procedure to hopefully last the rest of his lifetime. Additionally they followed up with arranging in home services for routine cleanings and oral hygiene into the future. The service is amazing and makes dealing with a tough situation as easy as possible, especially when the patient can not express themselves personally. 5 star all the way! Woke up at 4am while on vacation with a toothache. Called the 24/7 emergency hotline. Got a call back at 6:15am and a same day appointment at 11am. Got me right in, diagnosed the problem, gave me several options and explained it all. Made my treatment decision and was finished in 1 hour. Great doctors, great staff and fast service. And I still made my dinner reservations for that evening! read more

Another great experience here :) my crown fell out yesterday and they were able to squeeze me in the next day to fix that and also do a cleaning.
