Maybe I was expecting more of a Michaels or AC Moore but unless you are doing actual painting/coloring/sketching you won't find what you want. Went there a few times (the most useful thing is the bulletin board) looking for various supplies for a variety of art and crafting type things. Almost never buying anything. I had an incident that has kept me from ever stepping foot there again. A few months ago I went there looking for art markers I believe? Something like that I can barely remember... Anyway, two women were at front talking. Normally I don't mind this because sales associates are either clueless (I worked in retail and yeah sometimes we are, I'll admit it) or type to upsell anything you look at. They greeted me and I went on my way browsing. I asked one of them a question and was also going to pick up an application since I saw they were hiring (I did art classes all through high school and my life so I have above average knowledge of a few mediums) and the staff talked to me like I was a toddler. Seriously? I'm 20 now. Not 2. I heard them talking so I can identify a fake voice. Glad they didn't hire me after that odd experience (also if you look to apply don't have experience in anything outside paint or sketch. They don't care about other mediums.) read more

What a great store! We went to buy oil painting supplies for a Christmas gift. They steered us to the sale items( did not try to sell us the most expensive). We were looking at easels and the salesclerks brought out a great easel that was so much less. We were able to get so many more supplies! This store has courtesy, helpful salespeople! read more

I am a long time Blick customer (10+ years) and I am appalled by what happened yesterday. You know how your mother taught you not to say anything unless it's something nice? Well, I'm going to do my best to say something not so nice, as nice as possible, because, well, it needs to be said. And, as someone who is coming from the retail/customer service industry, I TOTALLY understand that yelp truly is a place where people go to vent. With that said, this is not a rant. I am posting this review with the sole intention of improving this (Blick) location and the quality of its employees. To preface this review, I just want to make it clear that I DO love this (Blick) location, and most everyone in it (until yesterday). All of the employees, with the exception of yesterday's experience, have always been extremely helpful, pleasant, and always very knowledgeable (keep that last point- knowledgable- in mind). Cue, review: On September 25, 2016, around 2:30pm I walk in, and a gruff, older associate (maybe in his late 40s, early 50s) greets me and asks me if I need any help. I can't fully remember his name, but let's say it starts with a 'D', and ends with '-ave'. I politely decline his assistance (as I know what I'm looking for), and go about my way. About 10 to 15 minutes later the same associate approaches me again, and asks me if I need help. Still, not totally in need of help, I relent, and let him know that I am simply in need of a fluorescent/phosphorescent pigment (preferably in powder form) that is water-soluble. Standing in the "tie-dye" aisle with lots of fabric pigments, he explains that "we don't have any phosphorous" I further elaborate that it only needs to "glow-in-the-dark" or be fluorescent. No sooner after he said that he doesn't think they have any fluorescent pigment powders, I glance to my right and what do I see? A fluorescent green powder pigment that IS water-soluble. To confess, I had found the pigment a few minutes before, but I was on the fence about buying it as it was so pricey. I ask (pretending like I had just found it), "oh- isn't this fluorescent?" He says, "oh sure, but that's only for tie-dye" (it's NOT strictly for tie-dye). MASSIVE red flag #1; a good water based dye can be used for MANY purposes, and should be marketed as such. Instead of seeking clarification, I just ask if he knows of any other fluorescent or UV reflective pigments, and he begins to direct me to the acrylic section. Here we go to the best part - as we are walking to the acrylic section, I politely state that yes, I know they have a glow-in-the-dark acrylic medium, and that will work just fine, as it is water-soluble. He responds how? I kid you not- "acrylic paint is not water-soluble." I had to do a double take and repeat it in my head... "ACRYLIC PAINT IS ***NOT*** WATER SOLUBLE." ...??? Wtf??? Really not being able to wrap my head around this and hold my tongue any longer, I state, still politely and quietly, "no... acrylic paint and acrylic mediums ARE water-soluble.... ? .... ???" Rather than admitting that he was wrong, he retorts (and I say that because there was a bit of harshness in his voice), "... Well, yeah, to a certain point, it is water-soluble... But after that... No." Um, yes, ok. I'm so confused at this point I just thank him for his help and just tell him that was exactly what I was looking for (it wasn't) just so that I don't have to explain to a Blick employee how to paint with acrylics. So, that's it, nothing more, just a completely ignorant (and very gruff/offputting) BLICK employee that has no idea how to paint with acrylics or what they even are. Did I get what I needed? Mostly (?). Could I have gotten it on the internet (also probably for MUCH cheaper)? Absolutely yes. But I came in to (Blick) because I was hoping to interact with artists, other creative professionals, and materials/retail associates that have at least as much understanding of the media as I do. Alas, that was not the case. Poor Blick :( I fear you are dooming yourself (by hiring employees of this caliber) to taking the very slow and unfortunate path of Blockbuster and the like ... If this type of behavior becomes the norm, I will probably just end up buying everything from the Internet like most people do. It's just a bummer really- there are so many cool artists out there (just a shame Blick doesn't want to hire them...). read more

I'm absolutely appalled at the prices. As a professional I've been to many art stores all over New Jersey, New York and other states. This is by far the most expensive art store I've ever been to. Even with the bogus discount card they offer for free, they're still about 20% to 40% higher than any store, not to mention the prices anyone can find online. Even their own website! Ummmmmm... $70 for a $50 can of gesso? really? No wonder their so well stocked, nobody will shop there. I honestly don't understand. I asked one of their friendly staff who was selling me canvas what the comparison was and the difference was almost $100 for the same roll. She then apologized saying she wasn't able to price match even though right in their membership card they claim to have "unbeatable prices". It's a clean, friendly store and really the only game in town, other than hobby shops but I'll never go back unless it's an emergency and if I let it get to that, I'll consider it a punishment for not watching the level of my supplies. Was at this store for the first time in years and I was pleasantly surprised. The young girl, Devon, who helped me was the best. Showed me where to find everything on my list, explained the differences between different brands and types of products and assisted me in choosing the right items to suit my needs. I love this store! It has so much to offer for art supplies and their prices aren't bad. The employees are helpful and knowledgable on the product they are selling. Every time I have shopped here within the past year has been a great experience! I am into drawing and started shopping here for colored pencils and Prismacolor markers. But with their wide selection- I was introduced to Pan Pastels (my new obsession), i can't find anywhere else that sells them. well ... how many years have I been coming here ? decades I presume !! We are soooo lucky to have Blick Art Materials right here in Allentown, PA. ! The store is clean, bright, stocked with anything and everything you could imagine as an artist ! They have awesome sales and monthly coupons ... The manager Janet is beyond kind and lovely ... and Lisa and the other art aficionados are wonderful guides to help you find the exact thing that you need.
