The Robert Mealy's Funeral Home situated in Goochland County I once knew very well many years ago took great care & pride in their business, the deceased, grieving families, and their repetition This establishment made their local community undoubtedly not only WANT but highly recommend their services as a funeral home provider. Your sincere love and dedication to your choice of career "back then" so beautifully & elegantly spoke up for itself. The "Mrs" Of the establishment was so comforting, respectful & humble and The "Mister" was well respected and carried himself with such prestige. When I say ALL of the above characteristics, experience, qualities, and respect have been lost, it's a very, very disheartening situation. As a mortician, you will witness families in their most vulnerable, raw, and uncut emotional state, and sometimes it isn't pretty. It isn't your job or duty to belittle make fun or gossip about your clients. That is where you must have understanding and compassion, not hate and envy. I would much rather you refuse a body than accept it, be negligent, disrespectful, unhelpful, and completely unprofessional with the surviving family and their deceased love ones remains. I honestly do not know who any of you are anymore, and it's sad to see the once successful Robert Mealy's Funeral Home transition into this diminished, self-serving, rude, careless establishment. This experience happened in November but I was so upset that I wanted to wait to calm down before…read morereviewing. My grandmother passed and Bliley's handled the viewing and transfer to Amelia Veterans Cemetery for the service. I ordered a large standing heart to be displayed at her viewing on their site. When I arrived to the viewing it was not there and I spoke with a young man who seemed unconcerned who suggested I call the florist. I explained that I did not know who the florist was as I had ordered through them. He went to an office and wrote down the phone number of a local florist and said I should call them in the morning. I explained to him that the funeral service was in the morning. All of this concerned me that he seemed to be unaware of as he was standing in front of the room for her viewing where all of this was posted. I was very upset that one side of her casket was bare as the other standing arrangement my cousin ordered was there but my matching one was missing for the viewing but the young man assured me that the florist could get it to the service in the morning. Somehow I knew this was impossible if I was calling them when they opened barely an hour before her funeral. But I still called in the morning and surprise, the florist did not have the order and could not help me. I called Bliley's and spoke with someone and explained what had happened again- they were unaware of the issue from the night before so it was like starting from scratch. They then directed me to an outside company that manages their Tribute Wall and said they would call me back. I contacted the other company who acknowledged that they had taken the payment the week prior but that at this point it was too late to send the arrangement to the funeral. You don't say! They said "I guess we will issue you a refund". I said I guess you'd better. I would like to point out that I was calm and courteous during each of these interactions and only during the viewing when I noticed the missing arrangement was I slightly teary eyed because it was the viewing after all. But not ONCE did anyone from Bliley's or their payment processor apologize or say anything resembling an I'm sorry for ruining your memory of your grandmother's service. Not only did they not apologize, Bliley's staff never called me back or even attempted to make the situation right and have the flowers at the service. For something as important as a memorial service or viewing I won't ever recommend a business that ignores issues and doesn't even try to rectify them. Oh I almost forgot! Because they processed my refund they removed the post that I made when I ordered the arraignment on their Tribute Wall from my kids to their great grandmother.

My uncle even spoke with management about payment and they said it was ok for us to send a payment IN FULL of 1500. Way to go, taking advantage of a veteran's family like that. You handled the arrangements for my aunt months ago. Or shall I say Mishandled. During a time where families are riveting and grieving from the loss of a loved one you decided to make a mockery of my Aunts funeral service. That day I took an unusual stance and sat in the back of the church. The church where my entire family, including my mother is buried. As I sat in the back instead of with my family during the ceremony, I was seated behind a man. Unbeknownst to me who HE was. As I sat behind him, throughout the service I had to witness him playing games on his cell phone, laughing and texting. If that wasn't bad enough. He continued to sigh, look at his watch and make exaggerated facial expressions. He seemed bored, bothered, uninterested. DISRESPECTFUL in the house of the Lord. I sat behind him for an entire hour enraged. Watching him toggle between apps on his phone. Whispering to the person beside him and laughing within their very loud and inappropriate conversation about going fishing etc. I could've created a scene but that wouldn't have been very helpful. They were Eulogizing my aunt and there he was completely disconnected. To my surprise. Imagine how I felt once I found out that man was Larry Owens. The funeral director and REVERN. How embarrassing. Disappointed. Disreputable and Disgusting. After the ceremony I disclosed the events to a relative and she confronted him while they were attempting to carry the casket to the burial site behind the church. I too then approached him outside. After telling him how utterly disrespectful he was to the church, God and my aunt, He simply said, well I was a little bored. I'm sorry sometimes I get in my phone to pass the time. I was surprised but I wasn't shocked. He looks like a shady character from a poorly written Tyler Perry parody anyway so if the Bigen fits, wear it right. He had the audacity to ask for forgiveness in the most condescending and insulting tone. I told him NO! I don't forgive you. And there were a few other choice words I wanted to leave with him. But I refrained. I walked away. Despite your irreverence Larry Owens, your boredom during a funeral service and your complete disregard or lack of social awareness and funeral etiquette, I suppose you're well regarded in this realm of funeral service. However, in the future should you cross paths with someone who handles anger differently during mourning the situation might turn out different. You must do better! You owe this community better!
