Go for the produce. Was able to find beautiful tomatillos, radishes, and wax peppers at reasonable prices. But tons more for any cooking need. The vendor stalls selling food are a must so go hungry. Especially loved the tamales, and soy chorizo kolache. This market offers a wide array of items so wasn't surprised to see locals leaving with full shopping carts. Don't forget cash bc closest ATM is in store a block away. Was $1 short but vendor was kind and gave me a pass. read more

Honestly, I have lived in many states and visited more and everywhere I go, I visit the Farmer's Market and this is by far the best Farmer's Market I have ever been too!! I used to live in San Diego where the veggies are amazing and delicious but this place is so much better! They have so many ears of corn, beets of every color, beans I have never heard of, flowers and honey galore...and they have food vendors too!!! I now live in Maryland and we have a lot of markets...but no market has this much produce or this many vendors! This place is amazing!! And they have music! They have a main stage and then around the each corner they have people playing guitars or horns..it's just so lively!!! Ruh-oh. How did reviewing this amazing farmers market fall through the cracks of my radar? Bloomington Community Farmers Market is worth an hour drive south from Indy to enjoy the live music, explore the vendors and chow down on some amazing prepared foods. My favorite time to visit the Bloomington Farmers Market is during zinnia season. The market is filled from top to bottom with hearty and affordable bouquets. Ah, I'm all smiles just thinking about it. From the live acoustic-style music (changes each week but it typically has a consistent vibe about it) to the rows of plants and fresh produce, I often need at least an hour to fully appreciate all of the vendors and products being showcased. The prices are also better than those you'll find in Indy farmers markets ;) The location along the BLine Trail and a block from the Bloomington downtown square doesn't hurt either. You could easily make this into a full morning/afternoon adventure with Hopscotch Coffee and Cardinal Spirits only a stone's throw away. Last, but not least, like any five star market, they have a fantastic variety of vendors - aka you won't find 10 soap and 10 honey vendors. All vendors are local producers/farmers, so you know the stuff you're buying is fresh, local, and supports the community. Great selection of produce and prepared foods (baked goods, coffee, juices, etc). The musicians are a little cacophonous but each band plays good music. I love the vibe and the bustle of this farmers market! A fabulous farmers market. Seriously. On a recent visit, I was impressed to see the volume of high quality producers & vendors setting up shop on a Saturday morning. Fun fact: the market can see 10-12K people stroll through on a peak day - and once you visit, you'll know why: 1) The market master curates a vendor list of primarily producers - meaning the people at the stand actually own the land where the produce is grown and can thus answer questions about the fruits and vegetables. They emphasize building a farmer/consumer relationship. 2) The market accepts SNAP which is awesome to increase accessibility for all to fresh, local foods. They hope to address the "food desert" epidemic with mobile farmers market trucks to cater to the needs of the community. 3) Beyond the plentiful bounty of fruits and veggies you expect, the market has a nice array of floral and gardening booths to pick up sunflowers or succulents. My favorite was the build-your-own bouquet vendor - 10 stems for $3. A steal! 4) Feeling hungry/thirsty? Head to the prepared food section for some eats. Check out Aahaa Chai for tea (I recommend strawberry peach mojito), Uel Zing for cold brew coffee, Sweet Claire's for a sweet/savory pastry and Sazan for Mexican eats. 5) I love the vibrant energy here. Kids playing in the park/fountain, buskers and live musicians, easy access off the B-Line Trail - it's clear this is a weekly community gathering place. This market is great! It was a rainy morning when I went so I didn't spend a lot of time here. They had so many local plants for sale for gardening that looked so tempting! They had a good selection of pre-made ready to eat foods and had a cheese stand too. They had a lot of fresh produce with a lot of radish options this weekend. Parking on the street was easy as it wasn't too crowded. I bet the selection here will get better as more local produce is available read more

The field trip to Bloomington was destination delicious, and the weather only made it nicer. I had never been to the farmer's market before, and I was incredibly impressed. I honestly think the market blows away those in Indianapolis. It's in a convenient centrally located area, and parking was not bad. There were plenty of options among ready to eat vendors, produce, and flowers. All was picture perfect and fresh, so it was easy to just grab things wherever I turned. Some of the items I purchased were peaches, green beans, eggplant, tomatoes, and peppers to name a few. All of it has been top quality and delicious. I also was very encouraged that the farm market not only accepts SNAP (food stamp) benefits, but they double the value exchanged. All of this along with a calendar of special events throughout the season make the Bloomington Farm Market well worth a day trip. read more

We were there for the last market of the season in early December which had the longer hours and the Tuba Santas. The weather was perfect for early December - sunny and 50F. The market was packed - it seems like the whole Bloomington community comes out for the last one of the season. There were a lot of local farmers, artists, and artisans with local and interesting foods and products. I highly recommend dropping by if you are ever in the area on a Saturday morning. read more

I CAN'T EVEN!!!!!!!! How have I not been to this before!! I work downtown Indy and got to the "Original Farmers Market" quite often on Wednesdays and let me tell you.....that does not compare to this!! I have heard how amazing Btown's farmers market is and I have tried to make it there a few times, but always seem to miss it. I finally told myself I was going no matter how early I had to get up! It did not disappoint!! I dragged my mother out of bed early on a Saturday and we drove the 1 hour down to Bloomington. As soon as we walked up, there was a young boy about 8 y.o sitting on the bench playing a guitar drawing a huge crowd. He was the cutest! Then we walked into the "main arena" and were blown away at how huge the market was! Thankfully I noticed people walking in with reusable bags and we went back to the car and grabbed one (still wasn't enough). We started at one end and worked our way around. A few times we lost our place and had to double back, because it was just so big and we didn't want to miss any of the vendors! I was amazed at how colorful everything was; vibrant veggies, colorful flowers, sun shining. It was perfect! What truly amazed me was the absolutely gorgeous fresh flowers. I have literally never seen such beautiful flowers!! I wished I lived closer so I could have a fresh bouquet of those flowers every week. The nice thing was that everyone was pretty well priced the same. So the peaches being sold at one booth were the same price as the peaches being sold at another booth, etc. My mom and I went crazy and bought sooo many vegetables. We ended up filling up our bag and even "rented" a grocery cart from the market table (just have to give them a driver's license or car keys). The cantelope we bought ended up being the BEST cantelope I've ever had! It was so sweet and juicy! All the veggies we took home and had for our cookout the next day. We were so giddy with all fresh food we purchased! We can't wait to go back again!!! read more

As usual with farmer's markets, come early for the best selection! A lot of vendors will sell out of popular items by mid-morning. I think my personal reason for loving this market is the sheer number of cinnamon rolls you can find throughout! I'm a huge fan of that. I also recently loved the artisanal pop-tarts from Love More! There was even a booth where you can create your own bouquet for a really great price! You can get breakfast, produce for cooking/using throughout the week, and beautiful home decor all in one spot! Whether it's locally-produced honey, goat cheese, goat's milk soap, or cold brew coffee, everyone will find something to love here. Don't miss the special events such as a tomato-tasting and the tuba Santas at the end of the season! They even do special farm tours once or twice during the farmer's market season. THIS IS A MUST DO if you are in B-town. I love rolling out of bed early or late on a Saturday morning for this market, it just brings JOY to my heart to be there, to enjoy the goodies, to buy from local vendors, and just feel good starting the day. If you have never been, it is worth the adventure and one of the many things that I adore about Bloomington. So you have been to other markets? Not this one, this market is huge and will blow you away. The farmers market is by far, the best I have been to in the state. Only rivaled by Madison, Wisconsin. B-town's market is in downtown Bloomington, just a couple blocks away from the downtown square and has access from the B-line trail. I love that so many people walk and ride bikes to the market. You will experience local growers selling their products and they actually KNOW what they grow and will tell you all about it. The prepared food vendors are the BOMB. They are taking all those wonderful market goodies and making them into some of the best food in town. My favorites include getting a cold brew from Uel Zing Coffee, tamales from Feast, and the Seeduction bread from Primally Inspired Eats. My husband is a sucker for the pizza, breakfast and otherwise, from the Muddy Fork Bakery. Plus, where else are you going to get artisanal poptarts? The market is very much a snapshot of Bloomington. I If you live in B-town, you will run into people you know and one of the things I love about that is, when you see them, they will be in a great mood! Surrounded by local foods, gorgeous flowers, the fountain, pets, sculptures, and the B-line on a Saturday, there are plenty of reasons to smile! Hands down, one of the best farmer's markets I've ever been to (and I grew up on a farm). The produce, the vendors, the prepared food shops, and the other organizations there blew my mind. They have it all: musicians, places to sign up to vote, lavender tent (!!!), produce, coffees, pastries, and everything you could want in season. I thought that we were spoiled with farmer's markets in Indy, but Btown's just blew it out of the water. They have special events going on throughout the year (including going to meet the farmers at their farms, etc) and they all sound like so much fun! Coming from Houston where the farmer's markets aren't large by any means, I was excited to visit the largest one in Bloomington. I set my alarm early so I could make it by 9 am, which meant I would only get 5 hours of sleep, but I would only be in town for a week and the market was big on Saturday mornings. Sacrifices had to be made. So what if I was sleep deprived for one more day? It was about a 20 minute walk from Biddle Hotel where we were staying. The mornings in Bloomington are cool, especially when compared to Houston, so it was a nice walk. When there, you could see the white tent tops and the people already there, equal parts mingling and shopping. It was only 9! We took a tour of the offerings that we encountered first (mainly fresh produce) which looked amazing but the walk to the market made me hungry, so I was looking for potential breakfast food. We finally found it towards the back (there are several "entrances" so my back could be your front or side). There were a ton of bakeries with pastries, breads, croissants, and tarts and more savory items like tamales. I was really tempted with the tamales but wasn't in the mood to explain my dietary restrictions so early in the morning, so I stuck with something safe. We ended up getting an Apricot Marzipan Tart and a Peach Tart from Pie First Bakery. There was a coffee stand where hubby got his caffeine fix and I found a stand (the tamale one) that had offered smoothies and I got the strawberry one. It was really hard to choose, but I had too many croissants over the past week so I opted out of buttery pastries (Costco had a sale on their 12 pack of croissants). If only I had a faster metabolism! The tarts were good. The crust was nice and flaky; no mushy bits at all. The Apricot Tart could have used more marzipan as I felt like there was more preserves than almond paste; I liked the Peach Tart more, since it was also less sweet. My smoothie was a bit on the sweet side and coupled with the tarts, I wanted something salty. So, on the food part, it was good, but I would give it 4 stars. The five stars overall came mainly from the fresh produce. There were a lot of items out there of the vegetable variety. Beautiful tomatoes, potatoes, squash, watermelons (not a vegetable but it suddenly popped in my head so it gets a random mention), corn.... there was honey, cheese, and various meat stands. There were even mushrooms! I love mushrooms! I WANTED THEM ALL. Unfortunately, all I could do was take pictures and stare. The vendors seemed to really love talking about their offerings and I really, really wanted to purchase some (especially the squash and heirloom tomatoes) but they would go bad and wouldn't last the week until I would get back to my beloved kitchen. A neat thing: there were a number of Amish vendors! There was even a popcorn stand made the old fashioned method via kettle! An awesome experience. I just wish it were closer to home. We stayed in the area for a little while after and it only got more crowded the closer to lunch it got. The market also had live music and is quite family friendly. Just no pets allowed in the market, though some people walked their dogs around the perimeter. read more

The Bloomington Farmers market is truly one of the most happenin' events in town every week. You can't find anywhere downtown where more locals gather at once to enjoy good food, wonderful vendors and tons of street music/art (Bloomington South even had their student be living statues there one week!) I try to make it to the farmers market every week in the Spring/Summer/Fall, they always have something fun going on (i.e. Tomato fest, Soup competition, arts fairs) and I love getting my produce there. One of my favorite vendors is the Kettle Corn booth... This corn is amazing! The best part is the women who work their literally make it all on site in a giant cauldron. Talk about my kind of sweet touting witches! The food at the Farmers market is also awesome; come early enough and you may snag a tasty plantain tamale from feast or delish chilaquiles from the taco stand. This has become the Farmer's Market that I compare other markets to. Hands down, this market has the best balance of ready-to-eat foods, produce, meats, cheeses, plants, live-music, and events that I have ever seen in a community market. You have to stop by, at least once - grab a coffee, some of the tastiest pastries you could ask for, and some groceries while you're there. Ready-To-Eat Foods: There are a variety of local restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, and the like that consistently have booths. You can usually find anything from a pulled pork sandwich to tamales, breads, pies, and more! A personal favorite of ours is Feast Bakery Cafe's tamales and other breakfast items (AMAZING muffins!). We also love stopping at Brown County Coffee for a fresh cup of coffee. There are just so many options for eating here: Mt. Pilot BBQ, Muddy Fork Farm & Bakery, Scholar's Inn Bakehouse, Pie First Bakery, Uel Zing Coffee Lab, and Sofra Cafe just to name a few! (Check out the Bloomington Community Farmer's Market website for a full list & links to tell you more about all of the booths!) Produce: Genuinely everything we have purchased has always been delicious - we've gotten everything from eggplants and squash to apples, berries, and even local honey products. Multiple booths have meats and cheeses for purchase as well! Keep in mind that the selection is constantly changing pending on the season - some people love the rotating selection, while others can get perturbed without absolute consistency. I love it - there's always something new to try. :) Parking: There is a decent amount of bicycle parking all over the downtown Bloomington area. If you come by car, there are lots of options for parking. They have free parking during the market north of City Hall in red permit spaces and in the IU 'C' permit lot - there is also a lot of metered street parking and garage parking available nearby (Morton Street Garage is very close). Stay in the Loop: The market itself has a weekly e-newsletter that you can sign up for on their website. Where I live in LA, our Farmers Market sucks so I wasn't going to let a little rain stop me from making this visit. Even though I couldn't take 99% of the offerings home, loved the amount of fresh meats that were available and the vendors willing to talk about their offerings. I ended up making a few purchases from "Hoosier Honey" and appreciated them telling me about the different offerings and where they would be best used. There are some food and drink offerings in the back if you need something to enjoy during your shopping adventures. read more

Pay the farmer now or pay the doctor later! This is an amazing farmers market. You really getting the feeling that 'community' is a central part. We were able to easily find parking behind city hall. There is close off street parking but it cost of Saturday. I couldn't really figure out if the farmers was dog friendly or not. There were signs that said no dogs but a lot of people had dogs. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of vendors. You can get seasonal vegetables, fruits, herbs, meat and more! Also there is a restaurant section dedicated to selling food and drinks. I suggest stopping by Scholars Inn Bakehouse. We tried their snickerdoodle cookie for $1.50 and it was great. read more

Went this past Saturday. Definitely the place to "see and be seen", bordering on hipster hell. Got coffee at a booth (I wish I could remember the name-the first one closet to the produce stalls) and in typical Bloomington food-service style, the guy who took our money and gave us our cups didn't say one word. I thought most of the vendors were out of their mind with their prices...$1.50 for a bunch of radishes...come on. But, people seemed to be shopping. I did buy a bunch of honey from Hoosier Honey. Bloomington has a wonderful farmers market, with local artists, growers, and businesses coming together to offer some of the best work around town. Produce abounds, as well as coffees, honey and syrups, jams and butters. Local restaurants offer food ready to eat; Feast, for example, offers up their famous tamales to fuel your shopping. There aren't a ton of things that I miss in Bloomington now that my grad school days are over and I've moved away. The farmers market is one of them. I'm sure there are greater farmers markets out there but compared to Philadelphia, a large city, this remains my gold standard for the farmers market: plenty of variety, reasonable prices and a bustling-but-laid-back community vibe. Some of the highlights for me have been the capriole cheese stand, anyone with chantrelle mushrooms, and the astounding variety of delicious heirloom tomatoes. I always had a tradition of doing my shopping first and then heading over to Le Petit Cafe, where Marina serves tasty quiches and such from the kitchen window. read more

OK, here's the deal, this is good enough for what it is -- more often than not, we have to settle in Bloomington because there isn't a better option. The great thing about this is it brings people together, it has a really nice community feel to it. However, unlike Californian markets, there isn't tasting and everyone here price fixes! Tomatoes cost the same at all vendors. My biggest gripe is the lack of variety the farmer's are bringing to the market. They should take some risks! Bring something new! Weird peaches! Nectarines! If I am in town, I absolutely never miss Saturday market, for almost 20 years. I adore the spectacle. I love following the unfolding seasons. In spring only flowers and root vegetables and green house vegetables seem to be there. Then the season unfolds until we are eating amazing tomatoes and corn. In the fall we wind down with the end of season pumpkins and squash. No two weeks are even remotely the same. The parade of people is a constant shifting delight. There is almost always one or more good musicians present. I am a long time fan and encourage all my friends to check it out. read more

I love the gathering of community, various events (like salsa contest, apple variety tastings, music, causes) and the fresh and prepared food offerings. The prices are higher than the grocery store, but try breaking open a grocery store egg and a Rhodes Family egg side by side and you'll see it's worth the price. I want to support hard-working local farmers who are going the extra mile to use farming practices that preserve healthy soil and produce great taste. On our Memorial Day mini vacation, I visited the farmer's market with my companion and his sister, her companion, and their kids. We sampled some delicious parmesan peppercorn baguettes and wandered around. They have a ton of great things to buy from local growers and artisans including candles, venison sausages, veggie plants, and grassfed organic beef, including filet mignon for only 15.99 a pound. I am a lifelong resident of Bloomington and the Bloomington Farmer's Market is one of my favorite events in Bloomington and is definitely a must see if you are a visitor. It has a great atmosphere with varied vendors sharing their fruits and veggies (and prepared foods) and local musicians also perform. The A Fair of the Arts event on the second Saturday of the month is also a special part of the Market with local artisans sharing their creations. read more
