The people doing the work seem to be good. However, the service is extremely poor. Example, in June of 2025, they told me that I needed a crown and did that work. Evidently, that work exhausted my insurance. They had me return on Oct 30. They told me I needed a number of X-rays and other work. But they did not inform me that all of that would not be covered by insurance. It would have been easy to tell me that I needed the preventative x-rays in early 2026 when insurance would have covered the cost. Beware of this dentist, they focus on money to the exclusion of the patient. They recommend crowns and additional procedures that are borderline required. read more

Sarah and Wendy were my hygienists. They were great. But I'm unimpressed with the service and tactics overall. They quoted me over 5k for some dental work that I didn't need. I have been to 2 offices since and neither of them have recommended what this office did. Highly disappointed. Walked out. Why? Showed up ten minutes early but was treated as though I was late because I didn't fill out paper work in advance. (?) Who does this? In my experience, absolutely nobody. I have several other doctors for medical issues and zero of them have ever treated me this way. I went back to get a cleaning on a first visit and they said they "might not" have time for that. Well, I own my own business and have another job as well. I do research, hold a PhD. I'm building a new home and involved in more than one real estate transaction. I would like to get my teeth cleaned, x-ray, etc. I showed up ten minutes early. There were multiple documents about how they would charge me for missed appointments. Would someone explain me me what makes them so special? Then I jump onto yelp and I see THREE stars. Well, that's about right. I just wonder how they feel being treated like they treat their customers. Their behavior just makes them look greedy. This place is more like a proctologist's office! Honesty and integrity, not here. Was charged for a full deep clean and received a shortened cleaning because the DA didn't know how to schedule appointments. 20 minutes for a deep clean doesn't cut it. My family was looking into a new dentist since my former dentist had moved over an hour away. I decided to try Blue Ash Dental since it was close and seemed to be a nice office. That was the worst mistake I made in 2021! They claimed everyone in my family needed much more dental work than necessary, along with over charging us, and on top of that doing shotty dental work that left us all in extreme pain. They filled cavities using temporary fillings that had to be fixed by another dentist, and the new dentist confirmed that much of the dental work they charged us for was unnecessary along with done poorly. The only nice thing I have to say about this establishment is that Sarah, the dental hygienist was extremely awesome......I hope she found a new place to work that matches her performance. Went several years ago first thing they wanted to do was replace all my fillings that were not even 10 years old. Then they were pushing invisiline. So very disappointed! I turned 49 this year and and been with this practice since I was very young and they operated out of a house. I brought my wife and then our daughter who is now 14 and been coming since she was very young. We were informed they are no longer seeing children under 16 with no exceptions. They even canceled her appointment in the fall without notifying us. We are all moving to a new practice and do so shaking our heads. They claim dental work is needed that is not, overcharge and put fees on the bill that are fraudulent ( claim they have to charge extra for "clean tools, along with fees they can't even explain) They will ask for payment in full upfront then charge more than double what is quoted, and leave your families mouth in pain. I have seen multiple dentists and hygienists in the office and everyone has been so wonderful. They do an awesome job making me feel comfortable, especially during Covid. I've had thousands of dollars in dental work done here recently and I just learned that Blue Ash Dental Group has been charging me an extra $10 a visit to cover their COVID-19 Personal Protective Equipment costs - air purifiers, employee masks, gloves, etc. Their Billing Manager, Randy insists that this is common practice industry-wide. It most certainly is not. I hope the $30 was worth it to them. They lost me, my family, and any future referrals as customers. They always reschedule the appointments, can't keep hygienist but still accept new patients when they can't accommodate to the patients they currently have. BEWARE! I was told by Dr. Sama Alkalaf after having no prior dental work that I would have to have a root canal on a tooth. I was told this was the procedure that was needed, and they set me up with their billing coordinator so I could pay in full and get scheduled. There was no discussion of a possibility of failure, no discussion of other options, but just that this was the procedure that needed to happen. I scheduled for the following week since I was told if untreated it could get worse. After a very painful 2.5 hour procedure (the numbing wore off three times), I was told I had to go see a periodontist for "crown lengthening" since they needed additional room to place the crown. This was NOT mentioned as a possibility prior to being in her chair that day. I left their office so upset after this horrible procedure, and now additional procedure I somehow magically needed to now go get. Immediately, upon sitting down with the periodontist he told me that they most likely wouldn't be able to do it from the looks of the x-rays sent over. The periodontist told me that if Blue Ash Dental group had sent the x-rays (prior to the root canal) over to an endodontist (as most do for questionable cases) that they would have informed them NOT to perform the procedure since there was not a high likelihood of a good outcome. There was clearly a lapse in judgement, and unfortunately I'm left with the outcome. Additionally, Dr. Alkalaf did not even fully perform the root canal as there were additional areas that she missed. So even if they were able to crown lengthen, this would have failed regardless due to a poorly performed (and PAINFUL) root canal. Now, due to the bad judgment of Dr. Sama Alkalaf, I am proceeding with an implant, but unfortunately, this is entirely out of pocket as Blue Ash Dental Group used up most of my annual insurance maximum benefit on a procedure that was entirely unneeded and ill advised. In effort to provide a fair review and full transparency, they did refund my out of pocket cost, but the $1,000 that my insurance paid was used up by this unnecessary procedure. If had been properly educated by this office on the risks of failure that was obviously very possible, I would have directly proceeded to the implant route and would have had a good amount covered by insurance. For months the office manager, Randy, stated that we should be able to put the insurance money towards the crown restoration (the portion needed after the implant itself), but apparently the owner of the practice (Dr. Detmer) said that refunding my out of pocket was "more than fair." I'm glad that he thinks that they have been fair with their poor decisions, but I felt the need to share this experience on this review, and others can decide that for themselves. The amount of pain, hassle, frustration, and money this office has caused from a bad decision is unreal. If they tell you to let them do a root canal, go to an endodontist who specializes in it; it will be the best decision you can make. I have been going to Blue Ash Dental for many years. Recently I had to reschedule an appointment due to a sudden death in my family and even more recently attempt to reschedule again because I needed to go out of town for my job last minute. When I called to reschedule I was told that I would have to pay a $50 cancellation fee. This did not sit well with me and after asking them to reconsider their stance on charging me and consider how long I've been a patient, I received a text message saying that they were unable to accommodate and I would be charged $50. In the world we live in today, my opinion is that this is a cheap and short sited way to run a business. While I understand that rescheduling causes an inconvenience, I find it difficult to believe that the staff doesn't have other stuff that can be done during this time. While $50 isn't the end of the world, the fact that they chose this option over the lifetime value of a customer (patient) is not something I will ever agree with. I do not recommend going here, I will be seeking out a new dental provider going forward. read more

Crooks. They charged me $200 took two X-rays. I had a severe toothache that needed removed. I had taken antibiotics a week prior to be sure they could. They wrote me antibiotics and schedule me a appointment at a hospital where there oral surgeon wanted to schedule me another appointment to get it removed. Misleading. I called for an appointment for my daughter and told them I could not tell if they took my insurance. They were very friendly and told me they would look up my insurance information and get back to me. They said I could cancel my appointment if they did not take my insurance but that I should make one anyway because they were so booked. My daughter's appointment date came and I assumed everything was good because I hadn't heard from anyone. They took my daughter back for a cleaning while I stayed up front work to out the insurance information. I was lectured by several staff members that it was my responsibility to have found out about insurance beforehand. Sure, it's my responsibility, but I wouldn't have left it up to them had they not volunteered. When they told me they couldn't determine whether or not I was covered, I asked them to not perform any work on my daughter to which they said they were already done. I ended up paying $244 out of pocket for my daughter's cleaning and was told that I should follow up with my insurance company to see if they would cover anything. read more
