We saw a show here and found it smaller than some of the other theaters in San Francisco, but it was still lovely and full of character. Unfortunately, our experience with the service was not great. My husband was still looking for parking while I went to retrieve our tickets from will call. I was already inside the building, standing near the entrance, when he came to the doorway. I simply wanted to hand him his ticket so it could be scanned and he could come inside to join me. As I tried to hand the ticket to him through the doorway, the employee checking tickets stepped in front of me and repeatedly told me that I could not leave the building and come back inside. I explained several times that I was not trying to leave I only wanted to hand my husband his ticket. However, she kept repeating the same statement without listening to what I was actually saying. After trying to explain the situation multiple times, I finally kept it simple and said, "I know. Can I just hand this ticket to him?" At that point, she seemed to understand, scanned his ticket, and allowed him to come inside. What made the interaction frustrating was not the policy itself, but the way it was handled. The employee came across as rude and dismissive, and I felt as though I was being treated like I had done something wrong when I was simply trying to give my husband his ticket. A little more patience and communication would have gone a long way. The theater itself was lovely, and we enjoyed the show, but the interaction at the entrance left a negative impression and could have been handled much more professionally.

People working here were friendly helpful and polite. You could smell the popcorn inside with well-dressed people buying wine at the concession stands, which can be brought inside while sitting on the red velvet seats. On the mezzanine level, two tall guys sat in front of me, blocking the view of center stage. At intermission, I asked the couple in front of me to switch seats so I could see a bit better. However, I noticed the girl in front then couldn't see, because there was a tall bald guy in front of her! Short people should always get the front rows, lol! In another lifetime I was a professional ballet dancer. I am not in great shape now, but I am still serious about learning. I thought my days of regularly taking class were over until I found Dance/10. I had stopped taking class because I grew tired of these scenarios at other places: A. Super competitive classes where people have a fit and elbow you if you stand in "their spot", etc. B. "Adult" classes made up of 13 year olds wondering what you are doing there. C. Classes meant more for socializing rather than dancing. D. Classes that were strictly limited to modern or ballet. I've found the adult classes at Dance/10 to be welcoming, diverse and focused on helping each student become a better dancer and performer -wherever they may be in their process. There is a perfect balance between serious work and levity. Pamm Drake (owner and instructor) is the triple threat of dance educators: professional career on Broadway, an excellent teacher who takes pedagogy seriously, and a genuinely nice person who clearly delights in her students' progress. Her tap classes are fun and progressive - she is great at reading the room and helping individuals without breaking the flow of class. The other instructors are similarly energetic and encouraging in class. At Dance/10 I witness each adult student being challenged, respected and seen.

However it was very plain inside, a lack of decor, standard theater folding seats in the auditorium, outdated and a bit dirty. In fact, the floors were kinda gross too. And the concessions stand was very basic with limited offerings. Nothing particularly appealing about the place, but it worked for the event we attended. Plus, it's a historic landmark, the oldest operating theatre in SF, and that's certainly something to appreciate.
