I love coming out here from time to time (I live in Austin). My favorite pie is the German chocolate. The food is tasty for the most part. The service has never been all that great when we have gone there (we've gone three times). It's all right, but I always get the feeling that the mostly middle-aged ladies that serve there have a real prejudice against young people (my husband and I are in our early twenties). I notice that the other tables always get bread as a free appetizer (I guess?); we've never gotten bread during any of our visits to Blue Bonnet. Also, they usually are just kind of unfriendly, and I always feel very rushed to finish. Which sucks since we spend an hour driving out to enjoy the pie. The first time we came, a woman was outside with some other people smoking as we walked in, and later we found that she was our waitress. I don't care she's having a smoke break, but it took her over ten minutes to initially greet us at the table because of it. We had come a little bit late (I believe around 8:15), and they close really early (9), so I could tell she just wanted us out. I tried to be as polite as possible and not linger over our food, but I still thought it was a bit rude how she landed the check before we were even finished. I have worked as a server and have gotten irritated by people who stay an hour over closing time, but if it's a freaking five minutes, it's no big sweat to me, especially if they're trying to hurry and not keep me waiting. The last time we came it was only in the six o'clock hour, but it was the same. The waitress landed our check when my husband was still halfway through his meal (I was finished), and she asked if we wanted pie. I said yeah maybe, but wasn't sure which yet. She said that she'd be around if we did and left the check. We waited for about ten minutes for her to return so we could order a piece of pie, and she asked irritably, "for here?" Um, yes? And she snatched the check up. Well, we really hadn't been eating long, and it was not even seven o'clock, so I'm not sure why she wanted us out so quickly. Perhaps it's because they think younger people don't tip? Which is funny; my husband is a server and always tips upwards of 20%. Well, I like the food and general ambiance, but in conclusion, my personal experiences with the service haven't been excellent. I honestly don't think it's worth the drive out anymore, but if I'm passing through the area perhaps I'll stop by...but only if I have an older relative with me. They'll probably be more friendly in that case. read more

My wife and I decided to take a road trip out to Marble Falls yesterday after church. It's a pretty drive this time of year from Austin and we ended up having lunch at Blue Bonnet Cafe. This place was BUSY but we were seated pretty quickly. Our waitress was very "direct." Not rude, but not real friendly either. Anyway, I had the chicken-fried steak with fried okra, mashed potatoes and carrots. The CFS was definitely done right: Nice breading that stuck to the meat, not too salty. They really like to slather on the cream gravy here, so beware. The okra was very good as well. The carrots and mashed potatoes were just ok. The star of the show was the pie. I had the "no sugar added" apple pie and my wife had the pecan pie. There were many other options, including fudge, german chocolate and lemon (which had a VERY tall meringue). My apple pie was nice and sweet. Amanda said that her pecan pie was the best slice of pie she had ever had. The pecans were chopped and toasted, which made a huge difference! Every year my family goes on vacation in Kingsland and the morning we leave we always make sure to stop by here for one last breakfast before we all part ways. Because of that, I've only eaten here on Sunday's... AKA church day, and every body and their dog goes out to get breakfast. So let me just tell you - the line is LONG! Outside of the building, wrapped around kind of long. Once you finally get seated it's pretty much like any little breakfast diner to be honest. The food is good but it's nothing that I crave or go out of my way to tell people about. And they only accept cash. Nothing irritates me more than a business that's get tons of customers that only accepts cash. Ughhhh. But they do have an ATM in there if you really want to pay $5 to access your own money:) Honestly if it wasn't for our family tradition of coming here I probably wouldn't stop by. Went here just for the pie. Went on Saturday afternoon. There was a line out the door, so I called and asked if I could just go in an order the pie as a take out. The lady let me know that I could just go through the exit and order my pie from the cashier which was great! I got the chocolate cream and the Coconut Meringue! Both are very good. Decent food, excellent service and great pie! My omelette was super oily and a little tasteless, wheat toast soaked in butter, but hash browns were good and the homemade rolls they give you are awesome. We split a piece of the chocolate cream pie which was a good amount between the four of us after the large entrees! Our server was so sweet and gave us a piece of pie for the road since we told her we were about to drive back to Dallas. Probably won't be out this way again any time soon but we were glad we stopped! read more

Pie Happy Hour!!!! That should be enough, but I'll go on and talk about breakfast at The Bluebonnet Cafe... By now, you know that this place has been here forever, and is one of those "must go" joints, if you're coming to Marble Falls, or driving through the Hill Country. My review will be about breakfast only.. I have eaten breakfast many times here. You may be discouraged when you see the line out the door, but don't worry, they move you in very fast. And, it's much bigger inside, with more seating room, that you might think from the outside looking in. I normally get an omelet, either sausage and cheese, or just cheese, which comes with a pretty large helping of hash browns, (or grits), a type of bread, (biscuit, home made Texas toast).. I always get a side of gravy to put on the hash browns, and I always get a single pancake, because their pancakes are mmmm good! I do like customer service, and they take care of you at The Bluebonnet.. you never have to wait for coffee refills or anything, they are always keeping an eye on customers to make sure everything is good! We've brought many visitors here, including my 91 year old father (Pie Happy Hour!), and they all have loved it! Look, this isn't a five star hotel/restaurant.. this is diner food. i see negative reviews on here, some of those people should understand that this is a diner. Wife and I decided to do a road trip out of Leander/Cedar Park and take the scenic 1431 highway drive. Great views of the hill country. Got to Marble Falls at 11:30 and there was already a huge waiting line but it did move quickly which is good cause we were hungry. I had the 6 oz sirloin which came with three sides for only $7.95. Wife had their famous chicken fried steak which was awesome. A nice surprise was the complimentary cornbread and rolls. I walked in (alone again because I don't trust no one with my Peeps) to surveil the place. It was a pretty good sized spot and I was the only potential customer in there. I had my really good mask on so I feel comfortable. When I walk in there is an older white male and two white women probably older than me sitting at this triangle counter. They all had masks, but not a f*cking one had one on their face. They never acknowledged me when I walked in, and they continued in their engaging conversation which I paid no attention to. I perused the candy wall which was more than 6 feet away from them and on the left side of the place. I didn't touch anything, and continued looking and keeping an eye on them to see if they would put their masks on or even offer any assistance. NOPE Nada!! I didn't touch shit because I felt if they were this cavalier about wearing a mask with a customer in the store, then I know they didn't wear masks when they put their merchandise out. Anyhoo, I politely turned around with my Texas boots and and my beautiful Black ass and walked out! I heard as I let the door go, "thank you for coming." I grew up at Blue Bonnet. My dad would take me before school and after he got off work (graveyard shift). I would have biscuits and gravy with chocolate milk. LOVED IT. Granted this would only be every other week, but this is one of the wonderful memories I have from Blue Bonnet. Now, when I go back to MF - I always stop in and get a chicken fried steak as big as your face!! The service is awesome. The women there work thier asses off to get your food out FAST. The people that make the food - FANTASTIC. I know some of them have been there for YEARS. I'm convinced that's why all the food is so great. So GO. Make this a day trip. I really like the place. You have to put a lot of stock in the historical value of the restaurant and not comparing it to gourmet food. It was built in 1929 and what once was the main entrance is now the exit, so yes you do come in the back door. However, thru the years Marble Falls has grown and the parking lot to accommodate all the BB Cafe food goers is in the back. The food was good country cooking and our server Vanessa was super sweet. What astonished me was the number of pies that goes out the door and are eaten there. There are some serious pie goings on in Marble Falls. In talking to one of the servers, she informed me that during Thanksgiving week they make 2000 preordered pies and serve about 1500 pies in the restaurant. Quaint but nondescript cafe in the heart of the Hill Country. The sort of stereotypical restaurant one would expect to find in a rural Texas community. The menu consists of usual diner-style comfort foods (chicken fried steak, catfish, etc), but the pies are the real reason to visit this establishment -- like so many other people note in their reviews. The food itself is decent, especially considering the price. The platters come with an entree plus three (3) sides. That's a lot of food which barely leaves any room for a slice of delicious pie. The prices range between $6-10 depending on the plate. I ate here while on a weekend getaway to the Horseshoe Bay Resort, and this restaurant was a great bargain compared to the exorbitant prices at the Marriott. Yeah, the quality of food doesn't compare to the Lantana Grill, but the Bluebonnet Cafe was a nice excursion away from the resort into Marble Falls. It gave a city-dwelling Austinite like myself the type of small-town experience I wanted to enjoy while in the country, and something different than nearby chain eateries (like Chili's, Subway, other fast food) which I wanted to avoid while exploring a new part of the state. Although my party didn't get caught in any long lines when we arrived (like other Yelpers mention), on our way out, the wait-time had definitely increased, and the queue jutted all the way through the small entryway hall to the side door. Orders come out fast, service is pleasant, and if you go for nothing else, get PIE!! We went there for a late lunch (around 1 pm) and there was a line out the door. Don't let that deter you - there is a line from open to close. It moved fast and we were seated in about 15 minutes. Breakfast is offered all day, so my sweetie chose the chicken fried steak breakfast with hash browns, 2 eggs and a ginormous piece of Texas Toast. Since it was lunch, he topped that with a strawberry shake. To say he went to a happy place would be an understatement. Seriously yummy. I chose a hamburger steak with onions and 3 sides - salad, beans, and tamale soup. Delish! We also received a side of rolls and cornbread and they were decent. Of course, if we're going all that way, pie is a must. We chose a chocolate and a lemon meringue pie and both were awesome. Had a nice meal on a Tuesday night. We arrived early and didn't have to wait for a table, which was nice since we had 2 small kids in tow. Our waitress was outstanding making good recommendations to get us fed quickly. Chicken Fried Steak was hard to beat. Gravy was perfect consistency and cutlet was breaded perfectly. Everything was clearly homemade and very reasonably priced. We had our food in less than 7 minutes and she acommodated our kids splitting a kids meal and even was nice enough to box up our to go box when she saw we were struggling with toddlers and infants. The food was homemade, good country cooking, which is hard to beat. The service was outstanding and and we will be back. Regardless of what my review is here, it doesn't matter (nor does anyone else's). Any restaurant that has been around serving a similar menu since 1929 obviously doesn't rely on social media for a revenue source. They take cash only and do it right. I was privileged to be a patron and appreciate that they provided such a great meal and were so kind to my family. Wish there were more places like this near our home. The food was greasy, cheap and not worth the line we waited in. The bacon was poorly executed and the French toast was mediocre. The waitress and the cashier made it a whole event to split the check. My girlfriend had heard rave reviews about this place, so we loaded up and drove over from Austin to check it out and poke around Marble Falls. Honestly, I was quite disappointed. The line was long, but it seemed to move quickly enough, and that was our fault really for choosing to go at lunchtime on a holiday weekend. The decor is cute and kitschy, the kind of stuff you expect from an old diner. You can watch them prepare their food and pies through the windows to the kitchen. I docked the rating one star because our server was an older woman who wasn't particularly friendly, didn't do a very good job of remembering who ordered what, and in general just acted like she had better places to be than serving us. I don't think it was us personally (although we are a lesbian couple, and we were in rural Texas, so you never know), as she spoke a few friendly sentences to my girlfriend about the food, but otherwise she was pretty taciturn. Part of the small town diner experience, maybe? I docked another star from the rating for the cash and checks only policy. The place was positively booming when we were there; you can't convince me they can't afford the credit card transaction fees. They do have an ATM on site, which I used, but it cost me an extra $1.50 in transaction fees. The last star I docked for the food. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't terrible. If it weren't for the server and the cash only policy, this would be a four star review. The food just wasn't anything to get truly excited about, and definitely wasn't worth the drive from Austin out to Marble Falls. I had the fried catfish with mashed potatoes, carrots, and fried okra. The mashed potatoes were good, though the gravy was pretty ordinary. The catfish, okra, and carrots were average. My girlfriend had the pot roast, also with mashed potatoes, okra, and corn. The pot roast was excellent. We tried three different pies - apple, lemon cream, and peanut butter. They were all good, but nothing ground shaking. I'm sure we could find somewhere in Austin that had pies of equal quality. The lemon was probably my favorite, but that was mainly because I found the apple and peanut butter to be far too rich. The prices were alright. For three of us, it ended up being just over $50, plus tip, which isn't terrible for what you get. Altogether, though, I don't expect to go back unless I just happen to find myself stranded in Marble Falls at lunchtime and feel like giving this place another whirl. read more

I can only speak about the pie but it was quite good. Tried a lemon meringue and the peach pie and both exceeded expectations. The peach was not overly cloyingly sweet and the crust is light and flaky (though they might just be canned peaches?). The meringue is high and fluffy, the way a good meringue should be with the sharp contrast at the bottom with the tart lemon custard. Would definitely like to come back and try some of the others, especially apple, which I have a soft spot for. read more

Saw high marks for this cafe so I decided to give it a try. Ordered the Chicken Fried steak with soup of the day (bean soup), side salad, mashed potatoes and yeast rolls. When delivered, the meal looked exactly like I expected it to look. Unfortunately, this was the best part of the meal. The salad was small but tasty. The bean soup had lots of minced ham in it which overpowered the taste of the beans. The mashed potatoes were bland and flavorless. The chicken fried steak looked great but the coating had a funny flavor and the steak was all gristle. The gravy on the mashed potatoes and chicken fried steak was tasteless. The yeast rolls were tasty and one of the best parts of the meal. Overall, I was disappointed and don't understand why this location has received high marks. Will not be going back. read more

Sorry for the delay in writing this review. I know they are known for their pies so we brought some home. It was good old comfort food. I think I had the 3 egg breakfast with bacon, and that melted in my mouth. The bread was great and it is homemade every day. Yes, this place really is as awesome as people tout this café to be. This place knocked my socks off. We waited about 20 minutes to get in. There were nine in our party and each chose something different to each. I had chicken fried steak. Awesome!! My son got a burger. My other kiddo got pancakes. I can't recall what everyone else got but there were no complaints. Nothing but praises sung for the food. Make sure you save room for dessert! We stopped here because it seems to be an icon in this small town. There was a line out the door when we drove by but by time we parked we were able to wait inside. The menu isn't extensive but did have daily specials, breakfast and sandwiches along with your diner type meals of fried chicken and pot roast. I got the daily special which was a 1/4 smoked white meat chicken with a side of fries, corn on the cob and a salad. The chicken was awesome. The corn was way overlooked and mushy. Yuck. The salad was mixed greens which surprised me. My only complaint on the salad was the bowl it came in. It made it difficult to eat. My husband had the chicken fried chicken, fried okra, green beans and corn on the cob. It was just okay. For the price the chicken wasn't that big of a portion. I usually complain about portions too large. Not so here. Over all, it was just okay. The waitress also forgot to bring the bread until the end of the meal. A bit annoying until I tried a bite of the white roll. It was awful! I've never met a bread I didn't like until now. How can you screw up bread? Oh and the corn muffins were no better. I'm giving this place a two out of five because it just wasn't great and I think people go here and say it's good because it is an icon and should be good. Another chink on the stars is the staff. On our recent visit to Horseshoe bay resort we ventured out into Marble Falls for what had been a highly recommended breakfast @ Bluebonnet Cafe. Not knowing what to expect, we encountered a line, a cash only policy, and a wait staff that was so incredibly busy they seem to appear unfriendly at times. Truth is a 15 minute wait in line, an ATM on site to fill the need for cash and an accurate order makes up for all of the other....oh yeah, some of the best tasting homemade food that we've had in years! We went in on at Monday around 10am we were promptly seated. Our waitress was pleasant and quick. Our breakfast was delicious!!! Loved our biscuits! Pancakes are HUGE!!!
