I wish I could give 0/5 star. Welcome to Mississippi, the "hospitality state." This used to be my favorite bar in town, until tonight when I had to use the restroom and there was a line for the women's stall so I walked into the men's and Adam, the owner, grabbed both my shoulders and pulled me back out to tell me it's out of order even though I just saw someone walk in and out of it. I told him someone just used it and it's a singular stall, but he insisted that it's out of order. Trying to ignore that he just pulled me back, I suggested he put a sign, but he just stood there blocking the door and repeated that it's out of order. At the end of the night, when my friends were cashing out, he continued to disrespect them and make excuses as to why he put his hands on me. Eventually he got a beer from the bar bc be was "in the mood to hit a woman" and didn't care if we came back. I don't care if you're the owner. Don't put your hands on me and disrespect my friends just bc a restroom is "out of order." Never supporting any business that treats people the way that Adam treated us. read more

While you're there, grab a smash burger, one of the best burgers in Town, next to Neon Pig's version if it, and their Bash Burger. The best meal we have had in a long time! Stopped in Tupelo Mississippi for the evening at a Hampton Inn. Asked the front desk a good place to eat and she recommended the Blue Canoe. Excellent choice!! My husband and I decided to share the pulled pork with cheesy grits, turnip greens and cheesy cornbread with green chilies. OMG the best ever. Loved it all! Great presentation and so yummy going down. I seriously think I could have eaten it all by myself!! We topped it off and with caramel pecan bread pudding in a coffee mug. Sooo good! Since we live 435 miles away from this treasure we will have to replica this meal the best we can. There should be a way to give the Blue Canoe 10 stars!!! The staff and service was outstanding also. They got our party of 9 in quickly and we sat in the outdoor patio. Most of our group had the chicken and waffles which the chicken was good but the waffles tasted weird to us- maybe a locale thing, not sure. The place was actually very cool looking inside, had a nice patio outside, strong drinks, and a cool set up for bands to play. I give all of that a 5. That being said....the service was ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. :( I was sitting at the bar with a friend, when I felt something leak onto my dress. And then...to my horror, smelled a strong vinegar smell. I looked down and somehow a vinegar smelling substance was LEAKING from the bar all over my dress. I grabbed a napkin, stuck it under the bar where it was leaking, and brownish, nasty smelling goo went all over the napkin. I immediately showed the bartender and asked to speak with the manager. It took about 20 minutes and multiple times of asking and finally the owner came over. He was rude, unapologetic, and actually basically called me a liar. He stated that there was no vinegar on the property and it couldn't have been coming from the bar, even though I quickly put another napkin at the leak and showed him. Other bar patrons we beginning to catch on, because I was causing quite a seen at this time. I kept trying to complain, because they never even came over to CLEAN the mess up. I didn't want someone else to get their clothes ruined either... Would you know that because I "complained too much" and was trying to warn people not to sit there, I was KICKED OUT!!! By security! Yes, I have eaten at the Blue Canoe. My dining partner and I were underwhelmed. No, we do not plan to return. I typically do not take the time to write reviews of bad restaurant experiences but feel somewhat goaded into it by the bad manners and churlish comments of the owner who recently accused me of being a liar in a public forum. (BTW, Adam, Jose Garces IS an Iron Chef. Google it.) Our visit to the Blue Canoe, prompted by rave reviews on Trip Advisor and Yelp, was very disappointing. Being northerners, we were anxious to sample more southern cuisine, a version of which this restaurant boasts to serve. We love Ajax in Oxford. Amazingly delicious food over there (try it!) but a drive from Tupelo where we normally stay. The Canoe's sad, outdated menu helps to explain why Mississippi ranks first in the nation for obesity. I can see an occasional foray into the eating of highly caloric, greasy platters filled with gravy-laden fries and large plates full of starchy grits or even an occasional splurge, ordering the heavily battered chicken between two carb-filled white waffles but few other interesting and possibly more healthy choices seemed to exist . As a regular diet, however, the restaurant should post a warning on its menu."This glue-like substance which coats almost all of our entrees may cause you to have to shop at the "Today's Woman" department of your local Belk's store." My dining companion and I split their version of a mufalleta, hoping that it might resemble those we had savored in New Orleans. Unfortunately,It was perhaps its 3rd cousin once removed. I think that it had a slab of ham substituted for the traditional thinly layered mortadella, prosciutto, salami and cheeses on top of olive tapenade which make this sandwich interesting and compelling. Whatever it was we got certainly was not what we had hoped for. Perhaps they simply ran out of the other ingredients, but I hate it when restaurants substitute without mentioning it or asking whether or not the guest would like to try something else.. The other sandwich we split -- some kind of pork sandwich -- was equally unsatisfying and cold when it finally arrived. We both agreed that it was a nice try but no cigar. We will likely not be back unless they move into the 21st century and serve meals that are not all simply colored brown and gray or army green and beige, all sodden and weighed down by their famously bland "gravy." I saw some nice, bright green veggies in some of the photos on various websites but nothing fresh or crisp graced any tables within our view around us. Service, too, was slow and the server rather inattentive, the kiss of death at many restaurants. She kept refilling my tea with sweet tea which, as a diabetic, is extremely frustrating as was getting her attention after the error. As newcomers we could have used her help in ordering, too. If I lived in town, I might drop in for what sounds like a good music scene. Maybe the food would taste better after a few cold craft beers, and maybe Adam is nicer in person. read more

I am originally from the Tupelo area and though I don't live here anymore I come back several times a year to visit family. There isn't much in the way of things to do and decent beer is hard to come by, so I usually meet friends for drinks at Blue Canoe--the food is pretty good and the atmosphere is great, which is why I'm giving them two stars instead of the one that I want to give them after tonight. Anyway, tonight the bartender was so rude that I decided to close my tab and come home to drink and watch Monster Week on Animal Planet rather than stay at Blue Canoe.My sister got a Hoegaarden, my husband got a New Belgium Ranger, and I got a Goose Island 312. The bottled Hoegaarden was of course fine, as was the Ranger, but the three of us agreed that 312 tasted AWFUL. We've all had the beer before, so it's not that we just happen to not like it, but that the 312 actually tasted like buttered popcorn Jelly Belly and dirty water. They finished their beers and were ready for another, while I was unable to drink mine because it was that bad, so I took it back and told the bartender and told her it didn't taste right and asked if she would take it off my tab or give me something else. Not only was she totally unwilling, but she LAUGHED IN MY FACE. I left the 3/4 full beer on the bar because it was literally undrinkable. Even at McDonalds if something isn't right then they'll fix it. Clearly I wasn't just trying to get something for free--like I said, the beer was almost full. I like to support local businesses as much as possible, but I guess from now on I'll be drinking somewhere else in Tupelo. read more

I ate here over Spring Break 2013. I realize my review is late but a certain FB post reminded me of how disgusting this place is. I was in town from Houston, TX, and my brothers and I met here to have a couple beers because the selection was nice for Tupelo. I ordered a burger with cheese. When it arrived, there was no cheese. I alerted the waitress, who acted like it wasn't her fault. I didn't really care whose fault it was other than it certainly wasn't mine. So I said "I did order it with cheese." To which she responded, "what do you want me to do? Make you a new burger?" I have never been treated in such a way! By a waitress! They were not that busy and other tables were complaining, too. I had to order from the bartender after that. I ate nothing, then left...never to return. So, instead of dissing events on Facebook, you may want to invest that time into hiring decent staff. read more

When in a new town I rely on Yelp to help me find a good place to eat/drink. Reviews were positive so I gave it a try. I think my first mistake was sitting at the bar to eat but since I was by myself I didn't want to take up a table. The bartender was more interested in talking with two guys at the opposite side of the bar, took 10 min for her to finish up her conversation before she came down to see what I and another customer who had been waiting even longer wanted. I ordered a beer and burger. Food was decent and tap beer selection impressive. I did notice fruit flies which concerns me on how often the two lines are cleaned. To much time was wasted on trying to get the attention of the bartender for another beer so I paid and left. The customer count at the bar was 6 so not a full bar by any means. While I wouldn't rule out going back I would most likely sit at a table next time to ensure better service. read more

I've been twice so far while working in Tupelo and would've been there more if I had known about it. If you sit at the bar you'll find yourself among a mixture of locals and out of towners that I've found very easy to talk to. The draft selection is great and so is the bottle selection. The staff likes to talk to you not just take your order. The Smash burger seems to be a local favorite because this isn't the only restaurant it's served at in Tupelo. Be careful with the crack dip fries because they are addicting. You actually can't go wrong with any appetizer or entree. Our party of 3 arrive about 7:00 pm on a Saturday evening. No one greeted or welcomed us at the door and no sign indicated we should seat ourselves. Apparently, you stand around watching others eat until a party vacates a table and you then seat yourself and wait for the table to be bused. After a while a waitress appeared and sat at the table and asked what we wanted to drink...but no drink menu only some chalkboards with some available beers. After taking our order (an appetizer, fried black-eyed peas, and entrees, 2 hamburgers and one muffaletta), the waitress disappeared for about 10 minutes and upon returning said, "We can't do anything with chicken tonight." I think she meant the chef failed to order any chicken earlier in the day for prep and cooking later in the day. After about 20 minutes our waitress returned and advised that our meal would be arriving soon but the appetizer was not included with our original order (she did not write anything down, so I suppose she forgot to order) but it would be out later. After meal finally arrived, we were sorely disappointed. The hamburger meat was mushy. The french fries were apparently old since they were chewy. The muffaletta was a pile of meat with cold cheese on top...not any resemblance to a real muffaletta. About halfway through our meal, the appetizer appeared in a hot pint-sized jar (no warning the jar was hot). The fried black-eyed peas were tasteless being overpowered by bay seasoning and heavy fried flour crust. A real waste. So, poor dinning room management, bad wait staff service, poorly managed kitchen, bad recipes, but I guess the beer selection is okay if you have never been in a bar outside of Mississippi, but no one in our party cared to order a beer. read more
