CASH ONLY! 2.5 stars. Located in a historic building within a quaint little downtown street dating back to the Civil War. Maybe I came on a slow morning but there was plenty of parking out front, no lines and only 3 pastry options to choose from. Was not really pleased to see the sandwiches being made w no gloves. Hopefully the lady collecting cash does not handle food. Sandwiches were only okay...the bread was a bit on the chewier side and heavy on the mayo. The chocolate chip cookie was massive and good but not great...only came here to grab sandwiches to picnic before heading to the Black Chasm Caves. I guess for a tiny town this is wonderful but coming from a big city as well as traveling to many other big city bakeries this one just was not worth the drive, sorry. read more

We started coming to Jackson, CA about five years ago when we started attending an annual family gathering there. The first year we went, I saw the Blue Door Bakery and wanted to give it a try because I love trying different bakeries. When I went inside, they had sold out for the day. I said, no problem, I'll come back tomorrow but unfortunately they are closed on Sundays so I wasn't able to try anything on that trip. Each year after that, I arrived when the bakery was either closed or sold out. Now, after five years, I was determined to try this bakery. We stayed overnight Friday and on Saturday morning, I got up and was at the bakery door 15 minutes prior to their opening. We were the first at the door so I was certain this was the year I was going to try this bakery. When the door opened, we were the first person at the counter. The bakery smelled like fresh baked goods and everything looked great. Since we have been trying so long to try this place, we ordered an embarrassing amount of food. We ordered two morning buns, a bran muffin, an apple tart, a loaf of sourdough, and a container of balsamic dipping sauce. While we were at the counter, the nice owner said she had to go take the chocolate chip cookies out of the oven so we added that to the order. We paid for our order (cash only) and went out to the car for our feast (there is no seating area in the bakery). After our first bite of the morning bun, we were convinced this was the best baked good we ever had. The morning bun has a crispy texture outside and the inside is perfect. We tried the bran muffin next and it was also excellent but in my opinion, the morning bun beats it out in the competition. I'm not a fan of fruit tarts so my wife ate that and she said that was also amazing. I did try a bit of the tart's pastry and that was flaky and delicious but I didn't try the fruit filling. Since the chocolate chip cookie had just come out of the oven and hadn't had a chance to set yet, I did not try that until later and it was also excellent with a nice crispness around the outside edge. We did not try the sourdough bread until we got back to our hotel room and that was also amazing. We sat in the room dipping sourdough into our balsamic dip and I think it was the best bread I'd ever had. The balsamic dip was also fantastic. After eating this ridiculous amount of baked goods, we went back into town so my wife could go through the antique stores which were closed when we went to the bakery. I was inside a store talking to a merchant when my wife came in to see if I had any cash on me. She said the bakery still had morning buns and she needed to get another one (that is how good they were). When she went into the bakery, the owner suggested she get me one of their sandwiches but we already had plans for dinner and we did not want to eat that much. I now regret that I did not get their Caprese sandwich so I guess that will have to wait until next time. We did not finish all the sourdough the first day and the next day it was just as fresh and delicious as when we bought it. This is not a typical bakery with a huge selection of items. They have a limited number of items but what they do have is perfect. I find a lot of bakeries are mediocre, at best, but the Blue Door Bakery is amazing. I can't wait for next years gathering but I'm now hoping we make another trip to Jackson before that so we can get back to the bakery. read more

This is a Serbian bakery owned by the third generation of bakers... The fourth generation is an active part of the operation... I put that in this review largely to focus on the wonderful, traditional baked goods that Blue Door Bakery offers... My wife and I live in Jackson, California about two tenths of a mile from this bakery... The goods are fresh every day and often sell out... During COVID-19 conditions, you can see samples of the day's wares in the window and place your order at the door without actually entering the bakery... The sourdough bread loaf is light, airy and absolutely tasty... We've made a habit of arriving right after 9 am opening to be sure the bread is warm... The short ride home assures still warm on arrival... The savory turnovers are super flaky (yep... put down a napkin or wear a bib) as they should be... We like the savory mushroom, cheese and herb filled variety... Also available are sweet turnovers with apple, berry or other fruit fillings... If you order a chocolate chip cookie and wind up hungry, it's your own darned fault... They are huge... We haven't tried the morning bun simply because there is a limit to the amount of "stuff" I can carry... I have no doubt that they are as great as the rest of the menu... In summary, I don't think you can go wrong with anything they have available... Blue Door Bakery does not have a website or a presence on social media... I chuckle when I read a negative review on a restaurant or bakery, and it's "because we don't have options or don't know better". l lived in New York City for 16 years and got baked goods there and in other big cities. Everyone in my family rates morning buns (cinnamon rolls) against those made by our grandma some 50 years ago. The morning buns at Blue Door Bakery are the first I've tasted where I felt I was back in my grandmas kitchen. The best bread we have had in 20 years since growing up in Europe! They make a delicious true European country loaf that is crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, and the best flavor! Absolutely amazing pastries and bread. I believe it's a mother and son, but might be wrong. They are both very nice anytime I've come. We popped in while walking around after lunch. The person helping us immediately cut a piece of their freshly baked sourdough breakfast to try with their house made vinaigrette. Yowza! So delicious. This bakery is a real gem, the sourdough is always amazing (just had a great sandwich at home from the loaf I picked up this morning). But the real treats are the baked goods. The Serbian owners are friendly and Lana is an amazing baker. Her bran muffins are the best thing I have discovered since spending more time in the area of Jackson, CA (and there are amazing things to eat in the Foothills!). The bran muffin has walnuts carmelized on top, are deliciously sweet and balanced. They stopped making them after some folks were disagreeable. I have asked and asked for more - and finally last spring Lana made me a 1/2 batch (32) which I very happily took home to freeze individually. Now when I deserve a breakfast treat I remove the plastic wrap, microwave for 60 seconds, and I am in nirvana. read more

My God you have to try this place! I frequent Jackson CA on the regular and decided to try this place out for a quick breakfast cinnamon roll. This place by far has the best cinnamon rolls I've ever tasted. According to the super friendly owners, this pastry style roll takes 3 days to prepare start to finish, the end result is heaven. I also highly recommend their homemade Serbian bread, it's similar to a sourdough loaf but better, don't forget the homemade balsamic sauce for dipping. I can not say enough about this small town bakery, it will blow you away so try it. This is one of the few places open on a Tuesday. It is a pastry shop with no seating - they had some menu items and also some items in the menu. We ordered the savory turnover which was like a crossaint type bread with melted cheese and ham. It was super delicious and flaky. They only take cash. BLOWN AWAY! Smelt the fresh goods all the way down the street today. Went in and got 2 focaccia and a loaf of sourdough. AMAZING. Right off the bat, customer service was 10/10. He talked to us, gave us samples of the balsamic, and honestly looked like he belonged in a Hallmark Christmas movie. Baked goods, friendliness, charming smile and the apron covered in flour! But then we got home tonight and OMG. I wish we would've gotten more bread and the biggest option to purchase of the balsamic. Honestly the bread and balsamic are a 12/10. An awesome little bakery in Jackson. I stopped in after having a bite to eat at another restaurant. The owner had just made a fresh batch of sourdough bread, which he offered me a sample of. It was delicious. Not overly sour, fresh and the perfect texture. After sampling the bread, I couldn't help but buy a loaf. There were also cookies, croissants, and other baked goods. I was thrilled to support a small local business by buying a loaf of bread. If I'm ever in Jackson ever again, I will happily stop in and buy more baked goods. read more

Ew! I would give zero stars if possible Had read good reviews so came up early to try to get some of their sour dough. I was in line and saw the proprietor outside with no mask. They are serving through a table at the door and the man came out again no mask, to talk to lady (who must be a regular) with a dog. She told him, "she can go first".. and instead he waved his hand and said "she can wait" and went to play with the dog. I said oh wait can you fill my order before touching the dog? We had to try this place. Due to covid, they service you at the door. Everything looked good so we tried a little of everything. However, when I asked him what they were known for, he said their bread loaf. Wasn't thinking about bread, we wanted sweets but we added a loaf to our order and so glad we did. All 4 of us ate our sweets, they were all quite a bit messy. However, he was spot on with the bread. We each were tearing into it as we were walking from shop to shop and loving it. Went here last Saturday. As I had shopped through Jackson, many of the merchants around town proclaimed Blue Door as the best bakery they have every experienced. Curious, I went back. I got a peach strudel...OH MY GOSH. Nothing I have ever had compared. It was so perfect. I also got a fresh loaf of sourdough bread to take home, along with a balsamic dip. Again, the BEST I have ever tasted. My next stop after this post is to call them to find out if they bottle the balsamic and if they ship. Just incredible. Don't miss out while you are there. Went by this morning and was offered fresh baked bread sample (still warm) and their dipping sauce as I was deciding what to order. They were kind enough to make me a Vegetarian Sandwich (their classic turkey just no meat) and it was so lovely... that garlic Aïoli was amazing. Will be back for it again very soon!
