I have been dreaming to get married at the Blue Dress Barn for probably over 10 years after finding it as a teenager scrolling through Pinterest - it was everything I could have imagined and much much more. The entire property is absolutely beautiful and it is the perfect place to have both the ceremony and the reception. I live out of town and planning a wedding a couple hours away & in only a few months time was a little stressful - but the barn management was so responsive and helpful whenever I sent them emails with tons of questions. During the tour, the consultation, and then the rehearsal and wedding day, the manager Beth was there and she was so helpful with everything. I did not have a wedding planner so I had lots of family members helping out the day of while I was getting ready and she helped all of them getting things ready. She was so helpful to the entire process. One of the best parts about getting married at the Blue Dress Barn was that besides the basic: linens, flowers, and pictures, the barn does not need any decorations. It is beautiful left as is and saves tons of money in the long run not having to spend money on decorations. Lastly, I don't think my guests ever stopped talking about how beautiful the venue was, I think everyone who came had so much fun wandering the grounds and marveling and the beauty of the barn. So if you are thinking about getting married here - DO IT! It was absolutely the best day of my life and I could have not imagined it being at any other venue. This place is absolutely amazing!!! This is the epitome of rustic shabby chic. The venue has several amazing areas to hold ceremonies, parties, etc. The staff were very friendly and accommodating with anything we needed. It is off the beaten path and when driving up you may miss it if going to fast but once you turn to enter its breath taking. Not a long ride from Benton Harbor and somewhat secluded. If you're hosting an event here bug spray would be perfect in gift bags or to have set up somewhere as the bugs were plentiful but not unbearable. Parking is limited and depending on the number of guests you are expecting this could become an issue, however if you're having guest shuttled in the drive is perfect for that as it makes a u around the building so easy entrance and exit set up. The location makes for the perfect backdrop for pictures as it's absolutely beautiful. My recommendation and advice is to go into the ladies room. I won't give away what's there but it's absolutely adorable and a must see! If you're looking for a venue to host a rustic shabby chic event the blue barn is your place! read more

I had an amazing wedding at BDB. It was the most magical venue / wedding day I could have ever imagined. Amelia was an amazing person to work with and her attention to detail is out of this world. To say the least, this place is extremely unsafe. Do not let your kids or anyone walk around barefoot, I found glass scattered in the cracks of the floor all over the huge main room. Definitely have not vacuumed in weeks, if ever. Everything in here clearly does not get cleaned frequently. My wife said there was a bucket of disgusting smelling water under the sink in the bathroom. For the amount of money this place costs to rent out, I expect it Amy and Kirby to be using the money they make for necessary repairs. They left 2 very young girls with us all night until 12-1am, as the adult manager left very early in the night. I debated even mentioning that in this review, but I think it's very unsafe to leave employees alone in a remote location with no real manager, so I needed to say something. We cannot express enough how wonderful our daughter's wedding was (July 12, 2020)! What a fabulous location! The owners and manager of the Blue Dress Barn were amazing through this wonderful and crazy process. Taylor said right from the start of the Covid19 that she was not canceling her wedding, even if we could only invite 10 people, and I am so glad we did not! We were able to have our full count. With so many indoor and outdoor area's it is extremely easy to social distance if you want to. In addition, the Venue set up extra chairs outdoors (and table and chairs indoors) so people could spread out, they were happy to make any necessary accommodations. Beyond the sand dunes and shores of Lake Michigan, nestled into a wooded corner of Benton Harbor lies the Blue Dress Barn and memories that are dear to me. A wedding at this venue is a truly special experience. I planned my wedding from 800 miles away and communicating with Amelia to finalize all the event logistics was a breeze. She bent over backwards to make sure everything was ready for us when we arrived to set-up, and was even on hand the day-of when it rained and we had to move our ceremony indoors. The best part is that they opened up their doors to us 12 years later to relive those wonderful memories. It was such a gift to show our 9-year-old daughter where my husband and I said our vows. Look closely and read anything they give you in writing carefully before you spend a dime. I would even suggest having an attorney review their contract so that if something does go wrong that is out of anyone's control, the burden is shared equally and is stated so in writing. If the contract is weighted in the venues favor, DON'T BOOK. Go elsewhere. Look at all the reviews, all of them, not the ones that are within the last year. I would bet some are made up, possibly solicited by the BDB itself. How can a review be posted in May of 2020 and is about a June wedding? Oh, it was last June, ok. So almost a year later someone writes a review? Hmmm.... odd timing. Why was the BDB Facebook page taken down? Hmmm...... Despite many companies and businesses doing the right thing, both ethically and morally, the BDB is NOT one of them. We are out of a lot of money because the options they provided to reschedule the wedding were not within the contract that was initially signed. Furthermore we were told we had to sign an addendum to the contract, part of which stated we could not use social media to say anything bad about the owners.......hmmmmmm. Despite reaching out to them early in the virus, they were unresponsive. The alternatives offered were not acceptable even though they "think and feel", they were fair. Yes running any business is hard and nothing ever goes perfectly, but no one wants to hear any whining from the owners about how much money they are losing.....did they make improvements starting in March? Absolutely. Sounds like poor financial management to me. Those that chose not to be "gagged" by an addendum, those that found the alternatives were not acceptable are out their money, yep, all of it. Of course the BDB states how many happy brides there are that did accept their terms. How many simply couldn't afford to lose their investment or afford to do anything else? What about the wedding that was rescheduled for the date we chose not to use because it didn't meet the original agreement? The BDB now has that revenue AND ours. Someone please explain how getting paid for two weddings but having only one is a loss of revenue? I see they've posted a list of all the happy couples who have rescheduled with the dates they originally had but left out the new dates showing only the month. Hmmmm, sure don't want to have those that lost all their money see that their date was booked by someone else. We didn't and many don't expect a full refund due to the circumstances, however a partial refund would have been the right thing to do. Look at all the companies, businesses, etc. out there that are doing hard things at a cost to work with people fairly. The BDB people spin everything and say oh woe is me, however they do not address the points that have been made in numerous comments. Easy to ignore the facts while playing a victim. How is it "compassionate" to offer alternatives not equal to the original agreement then tell people no refunds when the alternatives aren't acceptable? So now you've lost money? Excuse me but you have lost nothing. The people who are out their entire expense are the ones losing. There's a hard and right thing to do, at least refund half. Shame on you BDB and its sister venues. You are morally and ethically corrupt. read more

I just officiated my first wedding there today in more than a year and 1/2 due to COVID , and as I pulled in, it was like putting on a warm , fuzzy comfortable hat . This was definitely a storybook venue. The grounds are beautiful the barn itself is gorgeous. It's been well taken care of for a turn-of-the-century barn complete with ivied silos. The interior is rustic but clean and all the windows makes it a little breezy (on breezy days) and lit nicely until dusk. Beautiful location! The wedding was lovely and so boho-chic, just like the bride and groom! Not thrilled that the reception area wasn't ready by a half hour before dinner was to be served, and people were asked to leave and come back later, but that's on the wedding planner. I would caution against working with the owners Amy and Kirby. Their contract is heavily weighted in their favor and leaves very little protection for their clients when a challenge arises. Make sure your contract has force majeure language in it! They also ask for full payment much further in advance than many other wedding venues. As the Covid-19 crisis was beginning to shut down the entire country, Amy and Kirby notified us they were not taking phone calls to find resolutions to our concerns, and all communication would have to be through email. They met every negotiation attempt for postponing our wedding with take it or leave it offers that heavily favored their business, and left little protections or compassion for us as their customers. With absolutely no room for negotiation, we felt that we were being backed into a corner and told we needed to either take the offers on the table that didn't work for us, or walk away forfeiting our full investment. Their behavior was defensive and dismissive from the first moment we asked what their Covid-19 plan was. After months of emails back and forth we felt exhausted and disheartened. They had taken from us every ounce of excitement we had left for celebrating our wedding at their venue. At this point they also left us questioning the trustworthiness and stability of their business. So even though we were faced with walking away from our full investment of $4,500, we felt that we could not in good faith do business with them for another year. While what they did to us was completely legal given the terms of their contract, it was morally appalling. We later learned that they have treated other clients this way in the past, long before Covid-19. Although their venues are beautiful, their business practices are awful when faced with a challenge. They seemed too prideful to consider any negotiation offer that was not their own, and focused on short term gains instead of considering long term repercussions of their actions. read more

After visiting over a dozen venues, I kept going back to BDB, due its beautiful barn, outdoor settings and its detail throughout. Blue Dress Barn picked our wedding date and it was well worth the wait! Amy was always available to answer any questions and was fast to send us updates to seating charts when we needed it. Guests are still talking about how beautiful the barn and wedding setting was! Late in the planning process, we switched to the grassland ceremony site and it was beautiful! I received numerous compliments from all our guests on how beautiful it was & how much fun they had. I'm still getting calls & texts saying they wish we can go back & do it all over again! I attended the wedding last weekend at this venue and while other reviewers have given spot on accounts of the event, there were several issues outside of the electricity being out that were really disgusting to see as a guest. As a person who plans events for a living, I have never in my life seen a manager and owner act so disrespectfully to both guests and to the bride. You're being paid for your venue and your service yet both were beyond sub-par. For example, your bartenders openly told guests this was their first night working a bar....um what? Was this also the first night this barn held a wedding? Because that was sure how the management acted. Not to mention, the lack of ventilation and fans going in there on this sweltering day was also a joke. 200+ guests and 2 fans? Yes a dangerous storm swept through the county, which the event team and owner did nothing to alert the guests was going to happen until the storm was already upon us. Thank god the storm wasn't as dangerous as it could have been, otherwise this venue would be worrying about more than bad yelp reviews. You shut this party down because it was "unsafe" yet you had no problem not telling the crowd that an actual dangerous storm was heading our way with 60mph winds while we all sat in an unstable 100 year old barn. Again, lack of good management. Yes the electricity went out due to the storm but shrugging your shoulders and saying "well it's never happened in 12 years" is not an excuse or a way to fix the problem. Not having a backup generator for a venue in an extremely rural area in July (the stormiest month this little slice of heaven has to offer, as reported by the National Weather Service) is just beyond absurd. The lack of oversight by the owners is laughable. So at this point the electricity is out and we're being told it won't be until the next day that someone can get out there to fix it. Alright fine, if you don't want to find a solution then as guests we will and proceeded to do so. You then botched this event even further by making the bride address the crowd instead of doing it yourself. You want the crowd to respect you but you're too scared to address them on a problem that is site specific and therefore your issue. At no point should the bride have to tell a crowded room that the bathrooms are not working and that if you need to use the facilities, they're now located outdoors by your car. The most shameful part of the evening for this event team came right before they shut the party down and choose to openly yell at the bride in front of her guests. When told she should have some manners, she then proceeded to yell at the guests. The whole event team acted so put out by all of this like it wasn't their job to fix a problem created by their lack of oversight. What kills this venue even further for me is that you won't find a single person who attended this event as a guest or family that will have anything good to say but you can bet the workers or "third parties" will begin to pepper yelp with their positive reviews so that it doesn't drag down their star rating. Also, let's just mention the GIANT RED FLAG for other couples considering this venue....read the responses from the venue about their negative reviews. Not once do they take responsibility for anything that happened, rather they blame the wedding party, the guests, the storm, the county, the electrical grid, the "danger", etc. Never once do they claim any shred of responsibility for ruining this couple's day. All they can muster up is excuse after excuse and how it's everyone else's fault. Personally, I can't wait until this barn chic wedding fad goes away because it's making bad event teams overconfident because of booked solid seasons. If this were my business I'd be ashamed that people only want to rent us out for our venue because of a trend and not because we run a spectacular business. And no, there actually isn't one iota of condescension in that statement, as I have a penchant for old, rustic spaces and the "other," cleaner shore of Lake Michigan, being a Traverse City girl myself. So, when I was whisked (about 10 miles from the Lake in St. Joe's) with a throng of other guests, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Upon landing on a gravel driveway off Territorial Drive...the natural beauty quickly conquered the naysayers. Yes, we're in bumblefuck. Let's party in a rehashed barn! All joking aside, this is an absolutely gorgeous venue if this is your "thing." Rustic + rehabbed. Full bar set up inside, beautiful grounds, nooks 'n crannies, full (and nice) bathrooms with multiple stalls (a thing to consider with this type of space), ample parking, a fire pit, adequately-sized dance floor, DJ set up, outside porches (2-3), white lights, lanterns and simple touches fit for a variety of events... The ceremony was held on the grounds, which was also quite beautiful. Lush, green, and it smells like...what is that? Oh, earth. Yes, it smells like fresh trees and grass and moss and all the other things that happen when humans just stay out of the way. Romantic and sweet. A unique venue accommodating approximately 175 seated, moreso for cocktails/standing reception. Definitely worth checking into if you are from the area...or even if you aren't. St. Joe's is actually quite a nice "destination" wedding spot, so we discovered. Now...where are my cowboy boots? If you are attending a wedding here, I suggest flats. I think I aerated half the grounds with my patent leather high heels. Ah, the city/country girl clash...always a battle. Barn party of the highest order, 5 stars. *ps: awful cell reception. Our experience at the BDB was fantastic. We live in Chicago and knew we wanted to do an outdoor wedding, but still stay close to the city. The St. Joseph area has always been a special place to us. I really wish I could put into words how magical our wedding was. My wife and I got married at the Blue Dress Barn this past Sunday- May 1, 2016, but this review goes much further back, as we booked our date that previous summer. From the very beginning, the communication we experienced with Amy was wonderful. She responds quickly, she answered all of our questions, and she seemed very genuinely excited for us. When you sign the contract with the Barn management, the contract is goes into a lot of detail, so you know everything you are getting into. Nothing is hidden from you, everything that is expected from you is laid out, and everything you can expect from them is laid out. We booked a rehearsal the night before, and when we arrived, Tasha was there to answer any questions we had, but stayed off in the background so we could figure things out the way we wanted as well. All of our questions were answered, and she gave us a lot of helpful suggestions. Since we were having a same-sex wedding, I planned to use the bridal suite and my wife used the new trailer (which is adorable, by the way). The sign for the trailer says "man-camp," as it is usually used by the groomsmen, but when she and her party arrived, the management had a sign over the "man" in "man-camp," so it now said "woman-camp." And it was just great haha. All of this was wonderful, but our wedding day was what was truly amazing. We hired several vendors that were recommended to us through the Barn management, and everything just ran so smoothly. When we arrived, all the tables and chairs were set up and ready to be decorated. Tasha asked us multiple times if we needed help with anything. The transition from the wedding to the cocktail hour, and then the cocktail hour to the reception just flowed so smoothly, you can tell the management really knows what they're doing. We ended the reception at 11:00, and were completely cleaned up, loaded up, and out of the building by 11:40- the management helped us clean up so quickly, it was done before I could even realize it. What it comes down to really is- this is an unbelievably beautiful venue with really great people behind it. We almost didn't have our wedding here, but decided to just go for it, and now I couldn't imagine us not getting married here. It has such natural beauty, which is what we really wanted. It was completely gorgeous, it was magical, it was worry-free, it was absolutely perfect, now we just wish we could go back and experience it all over again. read more

Don't drink and drive to here. Make sure to have a driver. It's in the middle of nowhere, so you must be safe! For a wedding venue though, it was very legit. I am surprised - outside it looks like a dump/regular barn, but when you enter, the decor is just great. The bar in the front is also well placed, and the dance floor is clutch. The acoustics of the place isn't bad since it's small. Where they could improve is the insulation. Of course it's an old barn, so there isn't good insulation, but the heating wasn't enough in certain areas. Overall, decent place to have a wedding. Impressive! read more

My first time attending a wedding at the Blue Dress Barn and wow what a magical place. My niece was the bride and everything was perfect. It is a lovely location. Very quiet, even though the barn sits near the road. The outdoor ceremony was set up exactly as planned. The reception in the barn was great. There was maybe 80 people who attended and we had plenty of room to spread out. The dance floor and stage for DJ or band had lots of space to kick up your heels. Bathrooms were large enough that you didn't have to squeeze into. Grant it, I didn't have anything to do with the planning or paying for the event, but from my many years of event planning, I could tell this is a top notch facility and they will make any brides dreams come true. 2020 has turned everyone's lives upside down, but I'll remember this wonderful wedding for the rest of my life and thanks to the Blue Dress Barn for making this possible. read more

I had my wedding at blue dress barn on aug 12th 2016. When I first saw this venue I fell in love, it's so beautiful! From the wooded area around the barn to the absolutely stunning inside of the old dairy barn! Amy has always been very responsive to any emails I send, and when we visited to go over our wedding Tasha had always been able to answer any questions we had! When it came down to the day or my wedding, I was freaking out about the weather it was 80% rain, Tasha was able to make me feel better by telling me the storm would pass ( which it did ) she wiped off All the Chairs before the ceremony since it had rained before hand which was nice so none of my guests had to. Planning a wedding during this hard time wasn't easy and stressful but I have to say this venue was amazing. I just got married at this beautiful barn last week and I had the most wonderful experience with this venue. Any questions we had were answered. We kept our date for this year and we had the most amazing time ever. The barn was so beautiful and the scenery is just so amazing. There is so much at the barn from bon fire pit, 2 different ceremony spots, cocktail bar area outside and inside bar, to a wood pyramid with horse shoes game next to guys camper. You really don't need to do much if you have your wedding there and even as far with decorations it's that beautiful. The Barn has a relaxing and calming vibe all of our guest loved the venue and our wedding turned out amazing. We were given the option to wait until next year and were given the same date but we decided to keep our date. I would recommend this venue anytime. The Manager Beth was an amazing person all around.
