We booked for 9 people (3 kids 10,7 and 9 months) during spring break. Unfortunately we could not do the fishing because the waters were way too rough. The people there were incredibly nice and explained the situation and refunded our money to us. The crew was very nice and helpful. Everyone fishes from one side of the boat for 'starboard side drift fishing' so it was very very crowded when fishing. The entire boat didn't catch many keeper fish - maybe 3 edible keeper fish for about 25 people, but that's fishing - good days and bad. The captain kept the 'bait fish'. The guys on the boat are EXTREMELY helpful and motivating and will handle all of your fishing needs. They provide reels, rods, tackle, bait, and will even reel in for you if you've got a big one -- but what's the fun in that, right? Our group of 6 caught something like 20-25 fish over the 4-hour afternoon trip -- snapper, grouper, yellowtail -- and Blue Heron will filet it for you upon return. Remember to bring a cooler with ice with you so you've got a place to store your fish for the ride home. Fishing for me used to just be a vacation activity. On a double date vacation, me and the other boyfriend would find ANYTHING to do to get away from the cackling of the girls while they tanned and jacked up the bar tab, justifying it by saying we're getting points. Now, however, it's become the most positive outlet for me. You can go blow off steam anywhere- getting sauced up, throwing away singles at the pole , work on that cancer at the beach.... but these drift boats provide the unique getaway that can't be offered anywhere else. It's a $45-60, 4.5 hour commitment. Pack a bag with a sandwich from Havana, a couple of waters or a 6 pack of your choice, and make sure you have cash. Pay attention to when Sonic or George give their speech, it's a killing boat, and step aboard. AJ is solid captain, not one for many words, but sonic and George make up for it. You're getting a guaranteed 1/2 day vacation from on the water. Drop your line, wait for strike and pull it in. If you're lucky to get it in the boat, the staff does the rest- unhook, mark, gaff, and clean it. I canny stress this enough: BRING ENOUGH CASH. $45 is your ticket $5 to the big fish pool (optional, recommended) $10-20 for tip. Yeah.. tips are optional, but not to anyone who has been in the service industry. $10 minimum you hand in when you disembark. The last $5-10 is truly the only optional part. I usually give this if I've gotten a few keepers and hand it over when They've cleaned the fish. PS: if you win the big fish pool and the raffle do the right thing, youve already won a free trip, hand over your cash winnings to boost that karma Remeber: follow your line, over, under, over, under. If you are looking for an enjoyable fishing experience this Holiday season in the Palm Beach area stay away from Blue Heron Fishing. Their main goal is to load up the boat, shoulder to shoulder so that you spend most of your time untangling your line. They have three guys helping who seem to be the only ones having fun. They are loud, in an effort to try to make things festive but after a while it's just loud and obnoxious. Although you can't totally blame them if you don't catch fish, they should be communicating with other captains to have some idea where they are biting. Clearly, our captain wasn't aware of this concept. We spent as much time moving around as we did fishing, to no avail. Also they let on people with their own equipment which would be fine but they bring on board up to 4 rods and take up plenty of space. These are obviously "special" customers. It's not fair to everyone else. If you want to have a good time, there are a number of boats that go out with a limit of 10-12 people on board. It's more expensive ($75 vs $45) but you get what you pay for. read more
