At first, I was hesitant to book a couples massage here for different reasons: the minimal amount of reviews, the negative reviews, and Groupon scares me sometimes because you don't know what to expect. Fortunately, my boyfriend and I had a mainly positive experience when we came here. The main reason why I chose Blue Lotus was because of the complimentary cider and chocolate covered strawberries. I thought that was a sweet addition to the massage. I wanted to do a couples massage to start off his birthday celebration because it would be a relaxing start to a busy day. Plus, before today, he's never had a professional massage, so I thought it'd be a nice gift. The receptionist, Laurie (I think that's how you spell it), was very sweet. Even though she gave me a reminder/follow up call for my appointment two hours prior to the actual appointment, at least she followed up (unlike my last Groupon experience). As my boyfriend and I entered, she was welcoming. In reviews, I read how the rooms were cold and the lights were not dim, so I was pretty worried. Once we entered the room, I saw a towel over the lamp and it was the perfect temperature, which was a big relief. Also, the two glasses of cider and strawberries on the table looked perfect. The massage itself was great! My massage therapist, Danielle, was pretty gentle. Every single time she applied pressure that would hurt, I welcomed it because it felt good. I wish she focused on the spots on my back I mentioned in the beginning, and massaged harder sometimes, but it was still pleasant. My boyfriend doesn't remember the name of his massage therapist, but he said it felt good. He also said a certain area hurt sometimes just because he goes to the gym a lot. He did fall asleep, which is a good sign, and I was dosing off myself. After the lovely hour of a massage, they left us in the room where we ate the strawberries and drank the cider. Then as we finished and left the room, the massage therapists were waiting for us in the lobby with two bottles of water prepared. ZERO STARS FOR THIS PLACE! I do not recommend this place for the following reasons: 1) Customer service sucks I am 5 months pregnant and received a 60 minute massage as a gift. I called this place to make an appointment and they had to check their schedules to make sure there was an available therapist to do the pregnancy massage. They never called me back. I had to call them a couple days later 2) Pregnancy massage Nobody told the therapist that I was pregnant! She had to set up a whole new room (add 10 minutes to my wait). 3) Owner demanded gratuity When my appointment was nearing, the owner called me to confirm and to ask to put a credit card on file. Huh? Why? This is a gift certificate I'm using. She says "for gratuity". Uh, ok. I will bring cash. I thought that was weird to demand such a thing. On the day of my appointment, I see that my gift certificate clearly states "gratuity included". So what's up with that? 4) Place is run down The inside of this place looks like a make-shift massage studio that was converted from somebody's garage in the heart of El Cajon. Not your quality massage experience one would expect 5) The massage itself sucked! It sucked so bad that we quit 15 minutes into it! This lady (Danielle) was pressing down near my spine over and over and over and over for 15 minutes straight. I spoke up and asked for more massaging and less pressing. She got an attitude and said "what do you want then?! there are hundreds of techniques and I need to know what you want". Whoa lady. I just want to relax, shit. She suggested that we end the massage, so we did and I am demanding a full refund to the person who gifted this to me. * Oh, and get this. After leaving this place, I called the friend who gave this to me and told them to expect a refund because the place is shit. EXPERIENCE: This was my first massage and I don't know if I was expecting too much of this massage place didn't provide enough. When I first arrived, my boyfriend and I signed a couple of papers which only took about five minutes then we got started with the massage. Upon entering the room there were dim lights, chocolate covered strawberries, and apple cider which were nice. The massage was kinda rough & inconsistent because I felt like my masseuse was going everywhere from my legs to my arms, ignored my back completely for a while, then headed towards my finger tips. It hurt a couple of times & not the good type of hurt lol. COMPLAINT: My main complaint was obviously the inconsistency & also the little girl, who I believe was the receptionist's grand daughter. I actually went here a long time ago, so my bad for waiting until now to review it. I went here when they had a deal for $40 massage. The massage was good, but it left me wanting more, in a bad way. First of all though, the place was somewhat difficult to find. My friends and I circled around like twice. Plus, they don't have their own lot. If I remember correctly, we had to use a meter. So back to the massage. The service was good, they were very nice and accommodating. However, the room was so cold. The whole time during the massage I kept thinking about how cold it was. I don't feel the massage is worth the $40... or $60 at regular price. It feels more like a $30 or even $20 massage. At least that was from the girl I got. I wouldn't go back, but it's worth a shot. I was very pleasantly surprised in receving an amazing massage and facial thanks to Living Social. My husband and I usually try new massage places if they have those daily deals, and 75% of the time the service is what you pay for; skimpy and or lacking. This time... it was just truly amazing and WELLLLL worth the deal price. Plus I noticed their regular pricing is very modest and affordable. Bonus! We came on a Friday evening, and knowing downtown La Mesa, tried as best we could to get there early and find parking. We scurried into Blue Lotus right on time, which in my opinion is late, considering the paperwork you fill out as a first timer. The receptionist greeted us by name as we walked in (LOVE that!), and got us ready to quickly complete paperwork and have a seat on the comfy couches. Lisa Alves was my therapist, I really loved her energy. She did not leave me hanging for countless minutes during the disrobing, it was like she knew exactly when I was ready for her. (That is usually my biggest peeve getting a massage!) She started by setting some breathing expectations and then just went to work. A-MAZE-ING. In a much gentler way than I had ever experienced, she dissolved all the knots in my shoulders neck and back. She had perfect flow, perfect pressure, and worked in a lot of cool techniques for stretching muscles. After my massage, I was told to robe up and walk next door for my facial. Lisa was so sweet, making sure I had a good experience and giving me a warm hug as I made my way in with Alex for my first facial ever! Yes, thats right. First facial ever. And man, was it awesome. I left my warm robe on in this room as it was a bit cooler, and I was sooo comfy and in heaven the whole time. She used perfect preassure and was pleasant all around, even smelled great (I know that sounds weird but its a must when you have someone over your face breathing the same air as you!!) She gave a great little neck and shoulder massage too, which was bonus to the massage I had already. I was like a noodle when all was said and done, and my face was glowing all weekend long. The cucumbery stuff she used really complimented my skin type. My husband was very pleased with his massage and scrub as well. And we both noticed that, although we were a few minutes behind, they did NOT skimp on our treatment time. I'm sure it was because it was a bit slower than normal hours, and I would have fully expected shortened time considering I was the late one... but they really took care of us and we appreciated that. Me and my boyfriend have never gotten massages before this experience. We purchased a couples massage through groupon. The place was cute. It was nicely decorated with lotus flowers and a nice calming blue paint on the walls. The staff was friendly and made me feel very comfortable. Our masseuses came out and introduced themselves and took us to our room. The room we were is was amazing. They had our chocolate covered strawberries and sparkling cider out for us. The lighting was perfect. It was nice and dim and the music was very relaxing. My masseuse was Adria. She was very attentive to my needs. She asked me if there were particular spots that I would like for her to work on, how the pressure was during the massage, if the room temp. was ok and the lighting. read more

I have been here twice so far and would definitely return. The first time, I got the Earth Rose Facial and the second time I got the Green Tea Facial. I don't recall the name of the lady that did my facials but I do recall she was Asian. She was very gentle and thorough. The facials were top-notch. I recommend getting on Blue Lotus's email list, as it will notify you of when they are having sales. Typically the sales are $20 off any given service. Look for Blue Lotus at the La Mesa Oktoberfest too, because they usually bring out their massage chair to the sidewalk--I think its a dollar a minute. During the festival they also sell gift certificates for massages and facials at a discounted price. Parking is metered in front of the store, so if you go during the day--bring quarters. I think on Sundays the meters are free. If you are willing to park a few blocks away, like at Henry's Marketplace then you can get free parking and walk to the store. read more

I don't have much experience getting massages, but I had a horribly tight muscle in my back that needed some serious working out. I called first thing on a Saturday morning to try to get a same-morning appointment. Lauri (sp?) was very friendly and did her best to accommodate me. She took my info and asked if she could call a couple of her massage therapists to see if they could come in that same morning. After about ten minutes she called back, but was apologetic that she didn't have any luck. I was grateful, and decided to schedule the first available appointment for the next morning instead. Sunday morning arrived and I was still in pain when I pulled into their spacious parking lot. Their lobby was quiet, clean, and comfortable, and Lauri was there to greet me with a smile. There were no other clients when I arrived, and I commented on how quiet it was, to which Lauri made some friendly comment and quickly turned on some relaxing spa music. It was clear that client satisfaction was important to her. Shane was my massage therapist. He was quiet, polite, professional, and gives one mean deep tissue massage. He did a great job focusing on the knot in my back--I felt like pudding by the end of my massage, which is the point, right? He was even waiting for me in the lobby with a bottle of water at the end of my massage. While I was very sore the day after my massage, and the tightness in my back persisted for a few more days, I'm pretty sure it would have taken a lot longer to go away had I not had this massage. Bottom line, this is not one of those high-end resort spas, but Lauri and her staff seem to work hard to give top notch service to their clients. I went in not long ago for a massage and a wax, and I would definitely recommend them. The massage therapist was very responsive, and I left feeling that my lower back and shoulder (which had both been aching) had really gotten the attention they needed. Scheduling was easy and so was parking. The environment was relaxed, respectful, and down-to-earth (not airy-fairy or elitist in any way). All in all, I had an excellent experience and I plan on going back. The only thing that keeps this from being a 5 star review is that the waxing went a little long, and I nearly had to postpone my massage to another day. The best thing about this place are the robes and the slippers. I came here on a living social deal and had an hour massage and express facial. The massage was decent except that the therapist seemed confused when I told her to just do my back, neck and shoulders vs. a full body massage. Almost like I threw her routine and she didn't know what to do for the duration of the appointment. Lackluster. The facial, however was downright BAD. I'm not sure if facials are a new service they're offering but as far as I could tell the esthetician was using a Buff Puff and some products she bought at CVS (everything was in ominious labeled blue bottles). She didn't describe what she was doing or what she was putting on my skin and didn't ask me anything about my skin (I did fill out a questionnaire prior to my appointment, though). She lacked confidence in her abilities and it came through in my service. I left greasy and with exfoliant still on my face. The staff seems curteous and pleasant enough. The space itself is clean but not totally inviting. The rooms consist of massage tables with a basic sheet on them. Just went there last night to redeem my local coupon for a 30 minute facial and hour massage. The facial was done by Yoki, she start off a little rough and it seemed like she was rushing but then she calmed her strokes and did give me a great facial. not the best i've ever had but definitely a steal for what i paid, i would see her again if i had a coupon. The massage was done by Elizabeth who was very friendly and appeared to be an experienced therapist. she really worked my back which was so knotted up i couldnt believe it! i came in with a stiff neck and left with a stiff neck which i thought was kind of wierd, but my neck feels better so...i dont know. again, i would come back in a heartbeat with a coupon but otherwise i would stick with my usual joint Eroma in RSD. One thing i didnt like in either room was how bright they were! i see all these candles on the wall and think 'ooh this is going to be nice and relaxing' but no, they kept the white light lamps on the whole time! use the candles, or at least use a softer color on the light bulbs.. i definitely had a better experience than the other yelpers i think. read more

Granted I've only had three facials before (downtown SD, Wynn Las Vegas, and Catalina Island), but this is undoubtedly the best of all three. Gentle hands, concentration on pressure points, awesome massage. Could not ask for more with the facial itself. The walls are a bit thin and I was able to hear conversations outside the room but everything was so wonderful that it makes up for it and then some. I was honestly worried I had accidently asked for a more expensive facial halfway through my treatment. People pay a lot more money in snooty massage parlors for the services here. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this business. I have tried since July to set an appointment for the couples massage I bought on Groupon, through emails and calls. I received only two call backs, one telling me they only had weekend appointments over a month later but said she'd call me if anyone cancels because it happens often. A month goes by or so and nothing, so I call again. No answer. Get a call back later that I miss and I call back only to not be called back, yet again. The woman I spoke to the first time was very sweet but I just could never get an appointment set so I had to contact Groupon for a refund, which was a hassle. I was looking on spafinder.com and I came across blue lotus. I look on their website and see what they had to offer. The couples massage sounded very pleasant so I booked it, not gonna lie the strawberries and cider sounded really nice after a massage. The day before the appointment (Friday) the receptionist called me, left a voicemail and then txt me ... for a confirmation of the appointment and told me to get there a little earlier to fill out some papers. So my boyfriend and I got there at 10:30 (appt at 10:45) we filled out our papers and as I was finishing the receptionist asked for the payment, which I thought was too early for a payment but I gave her half of the payment. The masseuses greet us in the lobby and show us to the couples room. We both tell them our problem areas and start the massage. During my massage the masseuse (forgot her name) had cold hands !! She didn't even rub the oils or lotion to warm her hands or oils, when working on my back she would put too much pressure and hurt me, ( I told her and eventually fixed) there was no towels to wipe us down after massaging the areas, instead she would pat it dry with the sheet that was covering me. When the massage was over, getting into our clothes was very sticky, disgusting and nasty!! Arriving home and immediately showering ! As for my boyfriend he had no complaints for his masseuse, he loved his first professional massage. Both masseuse we waiting in the lobby with a bottled water for each, I gave the rest of the payment + tip. Overall I think it was and ok experience definitely needs more improvement. I was disapointed I was suppose to get a 60 min. massage she left the room for me to undress and didnt come back for a good 10 min. did the same at the end she included that in the time so I really only received around 40 min. Also they dont put anything over your eyes so when you are laying on your back its very bright and distracting. It was easy to make an appointment for the following day, I was interested in getting a foot treatment, but they were short staffed. The massage started of extremely relaxing and wonderful but I became distracted by my masseuse's pants due to the buttons clinking. After my back was massaged, the masseuse proceeded down to my legs. I asked for more pressure because I was unable to feel any relief. I turned over and the front part of my legs were being gently rubbed. I was looking forward to having more deep tissue but did not get what I was hoping for. My arms and neck were more caressed than massaged, and chest was completely neglected. After, I went to pay and they were unable to calculate 15% gratuity. took my mom in for a facial and massage for mothers day she had lisa and i can't remember the other lady but they were amazing i had a facial that was also amazing she took her time was extremely nice and i felt so relaxed unfortunately i can not write two separate reviews my massage was awful i am in three to four time more pain than when i went in with. my masseuse only rubbed oil on me and applied pressure to certain spots (think someone holding a stick firmly against your skin...i told her it hurt and she said she was trying to get my muscle to release) um OK? after ten minutes of hold your hand in the same place and i still say it hurts shouldn't you try to massage it??? i am extremely upset that "massage" was not worth the money i paid nor would it be worth even 10$ make sure you schedule with lisa if you go here read more

I called to book a couples massage package with strawberries and cider for my boyfriend and I as an early surprise Fathers day gift since he is going to be a daddy soon. When booking the massage, I had a very thorough conversation with the receptionist about how I was pregnant and so she only could give me a therapist who was experienced in prenatal massage. So we had to book the massage only on the days she was working. Which the day worked out perfectly for us anyway. When we arrived, unfortunately they did not have any notes in the book that I was pregnant, only had us down for a couples massage. Apparently, a prenatal massage works differently, requiring a different massage technique that calls for more room and talking through the massage that the couples room would not accommodate for... I was pretty disappointed because on the phone during our first conversation there was not any mention about how a prenatal massage works meaning it's not really done as part of a couples massage. I wish they mentioned this to me prior to arriving because they ended up having to split us up and explaining how we could do the cider and strawberries together after, which again I really wanted to surprise the BF and I just felt like it wasn't go according to plan. So I was a little upset going into the massage and that's not how I wanted my first interaction with someone I would have to spend an hour with who is trying to relax me should be... After cooling down, I was able to relax and enjoy the massage which the therapist was friendly and it wasn't as awkward as I thought it would be. The chocolate strawberries were delicious.
