While I haven't yet done the self guided or guided tour, I plan to go back to partake in it. My husband and I stopped in here for a special event on a Saturday where they had an old Higgins Boat on display that they had persevered after finding it at the bottom of Lake Shasta. It was a family friendly environment, complete with history, and Eric was even there mingling with the crowd, sharing his inspirational knowledge and stories, and having a laugh or three. Just looking at the imites part of the property we had access to that day it was so refreshing and exciting. Loving history and understanding the skills it takes to make all this magic happen is fascinating. I would highly recommend coming through and hanging out for a while on a tour if you can. I plan on going back though tours are only Monday through Friday so I'll have to take an extended lunch break or two. :) Happy to have this gem as part of the living history in our town.

The Blue Ox is a fascinating place where you can learn about the woodworking techniques used on Victorian buildings like those you can see in Eureka and Ferndale. They have lots of old woodworking machinery, some of which they demonstrate on the tour, and lots more which are used for real work, including a huge 14' wood lathe. There are lots of other crafts covered, including wood finishing, weaving, sign making, blacksmithing, casting, lapidary, glass making and pottery, all housed in the collection of somewhat ramshackle buildings around the site. It's fun to wander around and stumble across neat stuff like an old steam donkey, and the precursors to today's chainsaw. There are also some horses and two cute cats on site! An earlier review slammed the place for being filthy and unsafe. Sure, stuff is covered in wood dust and the floors are uneven, but this is a working museum, aiming to keep crafts alive and educate future generations. As a kid I would have loved to go to this place!

With craftsmanship being so much a dying art, seeing what is being created here by Eric Hollenbeck is truly amazing.

Killed some time wandering the shops and getting snacks, then met at the Old Town Gazebo to meet, Eric, the tour guide. There was no one else signed up for the tour that day, but he only charged us the regular tour price ($20 each) instead of the private tour price. I'm not that into ghost stuff, but my road trip companion totally is, and I just like learning about the history of a place with a fun twist. It was the first day of summer and the longest day of the year, so the ghost tour was basically entirely during daylight hours, but that was OK with me. Keep in mind this is not specifically a ghost hunt, but rather a historical tour of Old Town sharing stories of local business owners who have reported sightings or strange happenings in their old buildings. You also learn very quickly that Old Eureka used to be a lot more happenin' than nowadays -- nearly any upstairs housed a brothel, and there was likely a saloon downstairs. Now you're lucky to find anything open past 10 p.m. 'round these parts. The tour was mostly outside (and even on the first day of summer, Eureka was still rather chilly!), but we went into a couple businesses, namely the Eagle House Victorian Inn. Just touring that place alone was impressive. Eric tells some good stories and ties it all together. We even had a restaurant manager see us outside, and he popped out to share a recent sighting reported by a customer. Be sure to reserve in advance by phone (and I would recommend calling to confirm on the day of your tour). The tour was a solid 90 minutes, and we never felt like it was rush through even though it was just the two of us.

Fort Humboldt State Historic Park

Fort Humboldt State Historic Park

Historic Military Fort [Eureka CA]…read more There's a lot to take in historically from Fort Humboldt. Although this site seems peaceful now, at one time it was the hub of a conflict between settlers and Native Americans. We walked through the grassy park area stopping to read interpretive signs along the way educating ourselves. The history of Fort Humboldt State Historic Park dates back to 1853. First, one of the most famous military personalities to serve here was Captain Ulysses S. Grant, the future U.S. President and commander of all Union forces during the Civil War. He was stationed here as Captain of Company F, 4th Infantry, in 1853-1854. His story is shared in historic signage and markers. No wait... FIRST! Fort Humboldt State Historic Park is haunted! The GhostTube app captured some anomalies when we used it. I posted a couple of videos. During its glory, the fort had 14 buildings: Officer's Quarters, barracks, a hospital, a blacksmith shop, a horse stable, and even a bakery. Wooden markers can be seen at the park indicating where they once stood. The reconstructed Surgeon's Quarters and original Fort Hospital remain standing till today and I wonder if they open the doors to visitors during park hours. One part of the park are collection of exhibits not related to the military history: railroad equipment and machinery used in the early days of 150 years of local logging history including a Donkey engine.
